CONCORD, N.H.—In the final stretch of the campaign before most voters tune out for the Christmas holidays, Barack Obama is ratcheting up a populist message that echoes a signature theme of rival Democrat John Edwards.

Obama began a two-day swing through New Hampshire today with a roundtable on “Reclaiming the American Dream” for the middle class, casting the economic hardships of working people as aggravated by well-heeled interests that have captured the government

“It’s time we had a president who sees the government not as a tool to enrich well-connected friends and high-powered lobbyists but as the defender of fairness and opportunity for every single American,” Obama said in his opening remarks. “That’s what this country has always been about, and that’s the kind of president I’m going to be.”

Likewise, when 65-year-old Sandra Burt of Concord complained of the high out-of-pocket prescription drug costs she and her husband must pay under Medicare’s drug coverage, Obama used the opportunity not merely to tout his health plan but excoriate the influence of pharmaceutical industry lobbyists in Washington.

“There’s a direct correlation between the lobbyists in Washington and your situation,” Obama said, arguing that industry-backed provisions in the prescription drug program block the government from negotiating price discounts for pharmaceuticals that he said could reduce the cost to Medicare beneficiaries.

Such roundtables, which feature a conversation between the candidate and a handful of pre-selected voters centered on a selected theme, are a way of shaping local news coverage toward the campaign’s message of the day.

The theme of tamping down the influence of entrenched interests is hardly new to the Obama campaign—Obama has eschewed federal lobbyist contributions since the start and early on offered a plan to reduce lobbyist influence—but he appears to be amplifying the theme at the moment. He spoke quite a bit about fighting lobbyists during a six-day bus tour of Iowa that he just completed.

With many voters still uncertain of their choices—a CNN/WMUR poll of New Hampshire voters released today found two-thirds of Democrats in the state have not made a final decision on their votes—Obama has lately has been keeping an eye on Edwards’s potential to draw voters. Obama and Edwards both draw from voters more interested in “change” and fresh ideas while those favoring “experience” gravitate toward Hillary Clinton.

The populist theme offers an appeal to voters wavering between Obama and Edwards that is the reverse side of political dynamic displaying in the gentle sparring between the two candidates over the past several days.

Last Friday, Edwards said Obama was too conciliatory for saying he would bring drug and insurance interests "to the table" in negotiations for expanded health coverage.

Obama responded a day later with a rare mention of Edwards by name and criticized his call to keep health-care interests out of negotiations on expanding medical coverage as "just not realistic."

On Monday, Obama mentioned Edwards by name again, calling him a "good guy," but also claiming that Edwards had not done much to challenge lobbyists while in the Senate. Edwards responded by noting he has never accepted political donations from lobbyists or political action committees, while Obama did not begin such a ban until his presidential bid.

Obama is a great guy, but possibly unelectable due to his race, unfortunately.

I like the idea of a Edwards/Obama ticket. That would combine the best of both, and allow Obama to get exprience, and America get used to the idea of a black Vice President before seeing if they will accept a black president.

Edwards is actually the better of the two when it comes to looking out for the common man. Obama is trying to appear too mainstream, and perhaps he feels he has to because of his race.

And of course, while Edwards sadly flails at Obama's more progressive voting record, better record on foreign affairs, and actual years of service to poor communities in the Rust Belt, we're reminded Edwards didn't start caring about "the poor" until his presidential runs, as a matter of fact his anti-poverty foundation paid his campaign expenses before he declared his candidacy. I can't help doubting his sincerity. His one senate term boasts the most conservative voting record of any of the Democratic candidates, hands-down, and his co-sponsoring of the Iraq War and support for occupation for 14 months (until it was time to run again), and total lack of diplomatic skill needed for international affairs, are glaring deficits. Glad you cited Obama's long record of populist speeches, but don't forget his actual populist work! Years of it, when he could have earned more than Edwards $55 million as a water-carrying opportunist instead of a community activist at $22,000 per year! Both the Obamas have a real working class, community activist, upward mobility character. Nice change for the White House!

The following are issues of concern to all americans not just New hamshire voters !

Edwards, Krugman think that's naïve. They want the evil drug and insurance industries excluded from any of these conversations.

Edwards surely knows better than this.

The answer to price-gouging is to force these companies to negotiate drug prices with the government, a reform any Democratic president would quickly enact in the public spectrum / TV.

Ideally, health insurance companies should be eliminated altogether. But a single payer plan isn't viable politically, as Edwards readily admits. The only option is to curb their power and expand coverage through more regulation.

"""When I asked Edwards how any agreement could be reached without at least talking to these players in the system, he said he would offer a seat at the table to members of Congress who represent their interests. In other words, it's OK to have the congressional stooges there, but not the interests that pull their strings? """

Media coverage for Obama has been overwhelmingly positive much manufactured by reporters, but fails to inspire, suggested divisiveness in Washington stems from struggle of 1960s. that’s naïve. national crisis when Americans come together, politics has always been a divisive affair. Obama Has Not Won a Tough Contest, his ability to win in a difficult contest is reason for concern. Republicans will eat him alive ask John Kerry, Al Gore, or Michael Dukakis. Obama can't hope for change; you must fight for it. His first opponent, Jim Ryan, pulled out of the contest following the release of details from divorce. Obama has only faced ONE difficult battle for Congress against Rep. Bobby Rush. receiving only 30% and lost. Obama's inexperience hurt him.

His speech opposing Iraq war "I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars. War protesters have not been able to count on him, during his ballyhooed speech at the 04 Dem convention; he failed to decry the war, followed form and strongly supported John Kerry. When asked how he would have voted on Iraq resolution, don’t know said Obama. Since arriving in the Senate, Obama and Clinton have had identical votes on Iraq. His health plan, lacks a universal mandate, echoing his conservative peers, insists Social Security is crisis that needs immediate attention, not true, Social Security Trust Fund would run out 2046.

Obama Takes Black Voters for Granted, when a controversy erupted over the Jena Six. Obama chose not to take up the mantle of past civil rights leaders by not joining the Jena Six protest, Jesse Jackson (Obama supporter) said he's acting like he's white. Was a unique moment for Obama to show support for the black community, but didnt. Now he must explain to Democratic voters why he doesn't want to continue the fights of the 1960s -- included battles over civil rights, the antiwar movement, expansion of Social Security and expanding health care (Medicare). This is not the time for obama

I'm glad someone in the media is reporting that the closer we get to Jan 3 the more you see Obama copying Edwards. But he's not alone, Senator Clinton is doing it too. For example, today she added one of Edwards main talking points about poverty to her stump speech.

I also noticed another thing. Throughout the campaign Edwards would always come out first with a position on an issue. Clinton and Obama would then wait awhile and then introduce their own position. It's almost like they were waiting to see how Edwards position would be received before they would put out their own.

I think by following Edwards lead so much that both Obama & Clinton are inadvertently telling voters that Edwards is the true leader in the race and that they are mere followers. In my opinion that's not a very good message to send when you want to convince voters you should be the leader of our country.

Mike:

When you say Obama's message echoes a signature theme of rival Democrat John Edwards, then you've been listening to a lot of John Edwards and little of Barack Obama.

That's why you couldn't exactly recognize Barack. Better luck next time. Nice piece, though.

American's are past the point of caring about anything but there own family's safety, when it comes to choosing a leader. If they would have a "black" doctor, or lawyer then they will vote for Mr. Obama. To think otherwise is naive. They have had to change and grow rapidly in the past 10 years, and have gotten a real wake up call concerning world affairs. They will have to choose the person who can adapt and is truly concerned about the welfare of the American family. That will be the only political gaining point this election season.

Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHIEST from Wichita, Kansas. his parents divorced, father returned to Kenya, mother married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia. Obama attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta. He takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is quick to point out that, "He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school." Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that he is no longer Muslim. Obama attended a Wahabi school in Jakarta . Wahabism is the RADICAL teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background.

Recently free ride for Obama from political press and it feels besieged it has to bat away incessant questions with Obama's significant shifts/ flip flopping on issues such as Patriot Act, Defense of Marriage Act, Fast Track trade authority and benefits for same-sex couples. Given how little experience, campaign doesnt want any focus on his record, clearly raise questions about his electability and serves reminder about how little the public knows about his positions. Illinois chapter of the National Organization for Women, Obama said he would vote to repeal the Patriot Act. In 06 Obama voted for the redrafted version of the Patriot Act that made only minor changes. On Defense of Marriage Act Obama answered No, to the question: "Do you support repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. On Fast Track authority, which requires Congress to vote yes or no and without amendments on pending trade deals, Obama opposes Fast Track authority. Benefits for same-sex couples, Obama said he would need to evaluate the fiscal impact before extending Social Security benefits to same-sex couples. Obama is involved in a suspicious real estate deal with an indicted political fundraiser, Antoin Tony Rezko. Obama also linked to an alleged influence peddling scandal and was nabbed conducting campaign business in his Senate office, a violation of federal law. In addition three political aides on Sen. Barack Obama’s payroll are registered lobbyists for dozens of corporations, including Wal-Mart, British Petroleum and Lockheed Martin, while they received payments from his campaign, according to public documents. The Oprah Winfrey endorsement might have generated a lot of press for Barack Obama, but not a lot of impress, particularly among younger women, a poll released Wednesday shows.

A Lifetime/Zogby poll of women shows that of those 18 to 29, almost a third said they were less likely to support the Illinois senator because of the Oprah support. Older women, over 65, also showed they were ruffled by Ms. Winfrey stepping "out of her pew," as the daytime diva herself described it. About 17 percent of older women said the endorsement made them less likely to support Mr. Obama. Barack Obama was faced with a difficult vote in the Illinois legislature — to support a bill that would let some juveniles

Obama words are truly for the political gain for the people in america. To point out about his race is past thinking. think about the personal contribution to the society and not his race or otherwise. Obama is a great man.

Barack Obama for President.

It's time for America to Rise and Shine again.
