The Swamp

by John McCormick

Despite occasional family jokes that he might be president someday, Maya Soetoro-Ng said Monday evening in Chicago that her big brother, Sen. Barack Obama, was not serious about it until very recently.

"There's a big difference between a childhood story…and real plans," she said. "I can assure you that he had no intention of running for quite some time."

The comment came a day after Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign suggested Obama was being disingenuous about when he first started thinking about running for president.

That charge from the campaign of the New York senator came after Obama said he had "not been planning to run for president for however number of years some of the other candidates have been planning for."

Soetoro-Ng, meanwhile, was in Chicago to kick-off a phone banking effort on the part of Obama volunteers from Illinois working out of the 10th floor of a Loop high-rise.

She told the roughly 75 volunteers gathered that her older brother of nine years is someone who can "translate idealism into action."

Asked what her favorite memory of her brother was, she pointed to his help in raising her.

"Our parents died young, too young," she said, as four television cameras recorded her appearance. "He really took over the parenting and he did a really good job."

Soetoro-Ng said her brother had taught her how to cook "the three dishes he knows how to cook" and that he made chili for a family gathering in Hawaii last Christmas when a dinner reservation fell through.

She said she is cautiously happy about recent news that Obama received 28 percent of support in a widely respected poll of likely caucus participants in Iowa, compared to 25 percent for Clinton.

"I just want to make sure we don't stop working," she said.

After speaking to volunteers, Soetoro-Ng tried her hand at making phone calls to possible voters in Iowa. She kept getting phone machines (caller ID is popular in Iowa these busy political days) and eventually gave up to instead answer a few questions from reporters.

Soetoro-Ng said she plans to campaign for Obama in Iowa and elsewhere between now and Jan. 2 – the day before the Iowa caucuses -- when she must return to her teaching job in Hawaii.

This can't be. Hillary said he wrote an essay wanting to be president while in kindergarten in Indonesia. And Hillary never, never, never lies, right? Tomorrow, she will reveal that when Obama was born, his toes formed the letters W and H.

Does anyone really care whether Obama decided to run a year ago, two years ago, when he was in 3rd grade, kindergarten or when he was still poopin in his own pants and sucking his thumb? He's running now, end of story. Big deal!

Kindgergate:
The Hillary campaign is using the fact that Obama wanted to run for president since he was a child against him. And they are citing a essay he wrote at five.

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=4470
Quotes from the Hillary campaign about Kindergate:

“In kindergarten, Senator Obama wrote an essay titled 'I Want to Become President.' "Iis Darmawan, 63, Senator Obama's kindergarten teacher, remembers him as an exceptionally tall and curly haired child who quickly picked up the local language and had sharp math skills. He wrote an essay titled, 'I Want To Become President,' the teacher said." [AP, 1/25/07 ]

If you're thinking what I am thinking your thinking her campaign is either insane or desparate.

Obama never lies, its Hillary who flip-flops all the time, she is damn scared after the exit polls, she accussed Edwards of throwing mud but she is very muddy

Liked the comment. VV H?
vvhat does that mean, sorry for being dense.

I keep asking myself, "Is Hillary really that Stupid? Is she REALLY going to try to attack Obama's character?"

He's shiny as a penny!

She is really desperate and now she's embarrassing herself. Kids say they want to be all kinds of things. None of it means much of anything. Heck most of us are probably couldn't have predicted 5 or 10 years ago what we'd be doing with our lives now. And for her to call someone else ambitous... wow. that takes the cake.

Wow! He should be president. How many children can write an essay at 5 and a purposeful one at that.

Just wanted to thank Maya for sharing how her brother Barack Obama took care of her when she was young, it made me think of the challenges so many uf us still face in this country, it made me think of what the Hollidays are really about. Pulling together! and it reminded me of the tough challenges my sister and I had as kids taking care of our baby brothers. sticking together and not loosing them to foster care, even though it meant a much rougher path. I know what it is like and I can't help but think what a great role model Barack Obama will be for so many young kids with their own challenges.

As soon as I read about this, I thought back to the famous quote:

"people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"

How stupid and desperate can she be?

Clinton is not real. Every talented child has aspirations. The dream to be someone. Instead if Obama reallyhad a dream of being President at grade 5 and he is now pursuing his dreams, America should believe in him. That however does not mean that he has been preparing to run for ages. We all know when Clinton started preparing for WH, when Lewinsky sneaked into the headline news!

I think W H stands for "WhiteHouse". I also liked that comment about toes forming the letter "W H"

Who cares about oprahs dog and pony show! Frankly I’m sick of oprah already. I think her show is great. But in politics??? Now she out of her league. Having oprah try to buy the nomination shows obama has nothing to offer but a celebrity hoping she can bring a black vote because he alone cannot win on merit or experience. He only appears to speak well when alone, EVERYTIME he is in a debate or next to ANY other candidate republican or democrat it’s easy to see why he is NOT the choice. Anyone considering obama because Oprah said so should heave their heads examined…

HEY OPRAH! DID OBAMA TELL YOU, THAT YOU CAN'T BE FIRST LADY?? SO PUT YOUR PURSE AWAY

And how long did Hillary Clinton think about running for President???? I am sure for quite sometime. Give it up Hillary.

Kindergate.
Maybe this is the big secret Novak was talking about?

I don't think Sen. Clinton nor does her husband have the experience for the challenges that we face today. My opinion is that the Clinton era was a reaped benefit from Pres. R. Reagan. We need someone who makes decisions accurately and not caught in between scandals. Decision making like no child left behind, funding a war when it's convenient, don't ask don't tell, outsourcing jobs to India when Americans like myself are qualified, opening the gap between the Republicans and Democrats is going to take this country in the direction that is needed. This is not a popularity contest or a time for dynasty, but a time for positive change in the White House. I was always told to get home taken care of first before anything else. My question is why Bill will repeat seeking attention from other women verses his main squeeze Hillary. It seemed to America that this was one of her strengths to fight and suffer a marriage, but have that problem really been resolved. She has been positioned as first lady to help change things in America “already”. Is it not good enough to work on her marriage in her later years, spend time with Bill in the Bahamas, rather than to continue to pursue the ultimate goal as becoming the first female President? I wonder what Bill really thinks the reason why she chose to stay with him during his most indecent hour. Maybe she wanted a little more than to preserve her marriage, maybe to preserve her candidacy? Maybe I'm wrong about Hillary? Maybe America is too? Yeah right!

If you are donating to the HRC camp, she using $ to dig up mud rather than putting it to effect her campaign.

Truth stands with the test of time. Go Obama.

If you look at all the shows on TV about any type of competition, those that are losing ground, feel jealous and scared and the first thing they do is attack the other character.

They are threatned and will attack, rather than focus on their platform and build themselves up, they for some reason feel that by bringing someone down is help them.

Goes to show the character of Clinton's. More power to you Obama, she is running scared.

Hillary grew up wanting to the World's Biggest Ice Queen. She sure as heck accomplished that, huh?

Does Hillary know what to do with a man that knows how to tell the truth? I know she's used to Bill disputing the meaning of words and all but Obama has something that none of the Clintons ever will...integrity.

Go Obama!

Is'nt it about time Hilliary spoke up, Obama and Edwards have attacked her enough. Go girl, take nothing from anyone.

The worst dirt that the Clinton campaign can dig up on Barack is that he wanted to be president in kindergarten. To me, that's just further evidence of the man's integrity. We certainly don't need to go back to age five to find evidence of deception from Hillary.

I'm a die-hard Dem who has voted in every election for the past fourteen years, but if Hillary wins the nomination, I'm writing in Stephen Colbert for president. The silliness of this attack is just sad.

It's great that Hillary is speaking up, but just cause she's a woman doesnt mean we should vote for her. Look at their records and decide for yourself.

Maybe this was purely intentional on the Clinton camp's part, and Obama's people have taken the bait. As a direct political tactic, it's desperately shrill, but as subterfuge, it could be a masterstroke: Get everyone talking about Obama as a cherubic kindergartner who wants to be president. It may turn out to be the perfect Obama-containment strategy Clinton's been looking for all along.

The unspoken question: Since when did essay writing become part of the kindergarten curriculum? the one who is disingenuous is the teacher. Repeating such a claim is simply ludicrous. Whoever put it in writing should be fired for lack of common sense, if not incompetence.

I saw Barack speak a few days after the "Kindergarten essay" claim came out. He basically laughed at it. He said, "I wasn't writing essays in kindergarten. I could write a few words back then, like 'Mom,' but I couldn't write an essay."

As I stood in line at the Star Market in Honolulu, on Christmas Eve last year, I noticed the good-looking man in line ahead of me. He was buying ground beef, beans, onions, peppers, spices and hot sauce. He turned to me and wished me a Merry Christmas. He looked familiar - but I couldn't place his face. He stretched out his hand and said "Hello, I'm Barak." Then I remembered I had heard of him. It is hard to describe the energy or aura about him - his smile - his grace. He told me he was starting a new family tradition - on Christmas Day he was going to make chili for his family. He was completely alone - no one bothering him - anonymous and comfortable. What impressed me that I would like to share is what he said to a checker who recognized him and said to him " Sen. Obama, if you run for president, I will vote for you!" And he replied, " Whether I run or not, register to vote and VOTE, your vote is important." I will never forget what this genuine, honest, graceful man said. He shook my hand and smiled, and by his lonesome (no secret service,no reporters,no crowds) he left the store to get home to start his chili for his families' Christmas dinner. He is authentic - He is the REAL DEAL! I think of that night every time I see him on TV - and when I read that Maya said he cooked chili - I just felt compelled to write this testimony. As he said - "VOTE" -I say - VOTE FOR BARAK!!!
