The Swamp

by Jill Zuckman

Manchester, N.H. – Anxious to stop Sen. John McCain's rise in the polls here, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney went on the attack today in a stinging new television commercial that echoes the criticism he has leveled against the Arizona Republican during campaign stops over the past few days.

The 30-second ad calls McCain "an honorable man" and then says he opposed eliminating inheritance taxes, voted against President Bush's tax cuts twice and proposed allowing every illegal immigrant to stay in this country permanently and collect Social Security.

"And Mitt Romney? Mitt Romney cut taxes and spending as governor," the announcer says. "He opposes amnesty for illegals."

Ironically, Romney himself once supported McCain's legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. And he has endured embarrassing news stories this year about the landscaping company that takes care of his lawn, which apparently used illegal immigrants to do the work.

McCain's immigration proposal failed to become law, and McCain has since said he would focus first on securing the borders. The legislation did not allow illegal immigrants to collect Social Security.

During an interview on Fox and Friends from Iowa this morning, McCain said the attack from Romney proves he's doing well. And McCain launched his own ad on Boston and New Hampshire television that touted the 20 newspapers in New Hampshire that have endorsed him.

"I'm familiar with tailspins,'' he said of Romney in the Fox and Friends interview. "I think he's in one."

McCain also responded to Romney's charge that he voted against Bush's tax cuts, which is true.

"I've never voted for a tax increase. Governor Romney increased taxes," he said. "I don't know how to respond to a lot of his charges, because tomorrow he may have a different position."

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said the former governor has a proven record of fighting for lower taxes and cutting wasteful government spending. "It is an absolute fact that Senator McCain joined Democrats to vote against President Bush's tax relief not just once, but twice. The tax cuts McCain voted against helped grow the economy," he said.

Romney has been under attack from two of the state's leading newspapers, The New Hampshire Union Leader and The Concord Monitor. Both have questioned his authenticity and expressed skepticism about his positions on the issues.

While campaigning here Wednesday, Romney said it is fair to compare and contrast his record with other candidate's records on the issues.

"As long as you describe the other person's positions and record accurately, I think that's an entirely legitimate and appropriate part of a political campaign," Romney said.

On Wednesday, Romney made two new television commercials, which he described as positive and containing his closing argument to voters. He said he had not yet decided whether to air any "contrast" or negative ads.

Is anyone other than me tired of Romney negative attacks. Thats all he does. Im not interested. Tell me about yourself in your ad not that you are the best of the whole incompetent lot you keep bashing. "They are all so incapable so you better vote for me" thats all I get from Mitt "the truth doesn't matter when the presidency is at stake" Romney. Most of his negative bashing is his own spin or misreprentation of the facts. Don't get me wrong Im still mad at McCain over the Amnesty Bill, but any one of the Republican candidates would be better than Mitt "maybe Ill buy the media through my equity firm, so I will be the media darling" Romney.

This is a legitimate compare and contrast ad by Romney. McCain is a true politician. If he can't respond with facts or policy, he resorts to overblown stereotypes and personal attacks.

I won't vote for McCain. My vote is with Romney.

Mitt Romney, God Bless him, can take a punch, but he needs real time on the speed and more so on the heavy bag if he wants to try and get near enough to land one on John McCain.

John McCain is the real deal and yesterday's murder of former PM Bhutto by Islamist Terroists underscores the need for American voters to quit looking for nickles on the sidewalk.

John McCain is the only candidate on any party with skills, experience and integrity necessary to lead America in this war on Islamist Terror.

It would be inappropriate for presidential canidates to not debate, compare, contrast opinions. The important thing is that when they contrast each other, they know the facts and only contrast proven facts.

the economy is what people are more concerned about these days, more than anything. Mitt is the man for the job he is known for cutting taxes not mccain or huckabee. I think he is America's greatest hope for a stong economy. Mitt is simply comparing fact with his ads, I do not see a problem.

give the guy a chance.

Ron Paul is the only Trustworthy and honest Rep out there, I am a Dem but switched parties 2 weeks ago just so I could vote for RON PAUL. I have had enough of the Hillary / Obama bullsh*T and the same from the other Gop candidates.

mccain is a great man, but these ads are not personal attacks, they are respectful of mccain and simply point out policy differences. I would support mccain but he is wrong on immigration and taxes.

It's not an attack ad if it contrasts the records. If people agree with McCain's positions then this won't be considered an attack. McCain would only whine about this being an attack if he's embarassed about his record.

Only Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson and Ron Paul have the right credentials, to stop the disasterous period of red ink. Alas, we cannot trust any Democrats to stop the illegal alien invasion?

Taxpayers must stand with any official, who is willing to go that extra mile; no matter the political consequences. Very few politicians have the backbone to consumate the majority will of THE PEOPLE. They have become panderers to corporate and globalist open-border, unfair free-traders favors. America can no longer afford the $2 trillion dollar a year, to support the pariah contractors and businesses that hire illegal immigrants. They themselves receive all the profit, and the taxpayers gets the bill for hospitals, education and the massive prison appropriations. With between 12 to 20 million illegal aliens already here, with another estimated 17 million turning up on our shores by 2010, we are forced by federal law to subsidise these low income families. Taxpayers fall for this trick all the time, because the government doesn't tell us about food stamps, subsidised housing and a whole cornicopia of other free goodies. Its so easy for the citizen-taxpayer to carry the burden of cost's while the employer walks away. Free trade entities are behind the Bush administration unfettered movement of illegal cheap, foreign labor which is undermining our citizen workers wages. Most U.S. citizens have no concept of tomorrow, with outsourcing of jobs and business to foreign lands, along with the import of millions of people who can't speak our language and most have no wish to assimulate into our society. All but a few of our presidential contenders are not multi-millionaires, that show little interest in proposing laws protect our country from a globalist agenda? Both political parties are to blame, along with the american people for allowing this International globalist plan to continue. Our Industrial base is withering, unless you prefer a service nation? Big business must be held accountable for the destruction of our living standards. Hopefully, THE PEOPLE will show their intentions, starting with the Iowa Caucases and the upcoming New Hampshire Primaries! Are we going to have more of the same, with a depletion of our wealth and an erosion of our society. Or are we going to have fair free-trade and our national borders sealed for security and our prosperity?

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Mitt is a serial violater of the 11th Commandment. If he is so Reaganish one would think he would adopt one of Reagan's chief political rules" thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican"

Mitt has been on both sides of any given issue, he has no room to attack John McCain on immigration. This is disinformation.

I have not made up my mind yet. I live in Deerfield New Hampshire. I have 2 Republican Candidates I have narrowed my vote down to. I am either going to vote for Mitt Romney or John McCain.

Which ever of these men I believe is the least weak on Border Security and getting tough on Companies that hire Illegal Aliens, will be the man I will vote for here in New Hampshire.

I'm amazed that they didn't even mention campaign finance reform.... McCain is an honorable man, but he sure has supported some horrible policies.... Romney-Watts in 2008!

Wake up! Ron Paul does not get involved in this BS. He is honest, and defends the U.S. Constitution.

The way I read this is that McCain is a compassionate conservative and Romney is a fat hypocrite. How can you claim to be a Christian when intolerance and hostility toward other people and cultures is part of your political platform?

Hey Jeff, "thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican," spoken by Reagan, referred to general elections, not primaries. Many talking heads still get that wrong, but now you know.

Older folks here will remember that Reagan flamed Bush during the 1980 primaries, leading up to Reagan's nomination and election.

McCain is corrupt (see S & L scandal), arrogant, hot-headed, disloyal to the party, a supporter and author of the Kennedy-McCain amnesty bill for illegals, and a democrat on tax isssues. Romney is a brilliant man with the skills, energy and character we need to fix what's wrong with the federal government. McCain has been part of the problem in DC for too long. His tired old "war hero" facade won't get him elected against Hilliary, and wouldn't get the job done in the White House.

Attention New Hampshire & Iowa voters.

Do not allow John McCain and his cronies in the MSM media fool you with the spin of his rise in the polls. This so called "maverick" cannot be trusted. Remember McCain Feingold, 2 votes against the Bush tax cuts, the gang of fourteen and the McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill. Do we want to take the chance on McCain compromising on judges again? Should we trust him to buck the Dems when they propose tax increases? Sure McCain is an honorable man and served his country well, but any prospective president who would discuss openly methods he would or would not use to save the life of Americans for political gains does not deserve consideration. Like Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama, John McCain has not run anything. Senators debate, governors make decisions. Republicans needs a change in the guards. Mitt Romney represents that change. We do not need a maverick; we need someone who can keep the Republican base united, while at the same time garnering support from independents and conservative mind Democrats. Mitt Romney has achieved success with this coalition. McCain has hurt the republican base once too many.

Willard Mitt is not only a flip-flopper, he's also a serial liar.

Romneys Latest Tall Tale:

Mitt Romney has defended his position on civil rights, in multiple high-profile settings, by insisting that his father marched with Martin Luther King during his tenure as governor of Michigan in the 1960s. Pressed for specifics, the Romney campaign pointed to an event that occurred in Grosse Point, Mich.

The claim appears to be false — Romney’s father did not march with King. Unfortunately, the campaign has come up with an unpersuasive defense.

From the internet(s):

Other people Willard Mitt "saw" his father with:

10. The first Super Bowl... I still have the picture in my head, Dad standing there, arm-and-arm, with Max McGee

9. Margaret Mead... I was very young, and it was on a dig in some foreign country ... I can still see, both of them, in their dirty kakis

8. U Thant... I believe that I saw Dad be the first person to greet him at the United Nations

7. Charlton Heston... In the early 60's, I think it was on the set of "The Greatest Story Ever Told" that I saw them ... If Dad were still alive, I can see him, at the NRA convention - who has endorsed me, by the way - handing Mr. Heston the "cold dead hands" rifle

6. John Glenn... It's so crystal clear, that I could have swear Dad was on the first orbit with him

5. Miles Davis... It was just before 'Bitches Brew' came out ... Not many people saw it, but Dad was an old hipster ...

4. Ian Smith, the Rhodesian Prime Minister... In fact, as I remember seeing, Dad had, kind of, a Mormon Prophecy, and told Smith that the country would, some day, have a name like "Zimbaby", or something like that ...

3. Hank Aaron ... Dad was there the big night, No. 715... Almost can see Dad himself, hitting that homerun

2. Abba Eban ... I can still see them, like they were standing here today ... Dad told Eban, he could wrap things in in five, or six-days

1. I can see it clearly... August 15, 1965 ... Shea Stadium... Dad up there with The Beatles ...

I'm amazed that John McCain gets such high marks for foreign policy leadership.

The guy would rather lose an American city to a terrorist's nuke then waterboard a terrorist.

He may have once been a hero but the experience marked him and left him unfit for the Presidency and its most important responsibility which is protecting the American people.

jackbenimble,

You should hang your head in shame. You would never have the package to say to McCain's face what you posted here.

I would say it to his face. He is a walking contradiction. He fought in the Vietnam war which was a war against SOVIET expansion. But he won't defend the borders of his very own state against drug cartels human trafficking and potential terrorist attack.

to the first post...dude, turn up your hearing aid...Romney does talk about himself in this ad...No record of raising taxes or being pro-illegal immigrants...watch it again, and then we'll talk

Romney can fool some of the people some of the time, but he can not fool all of the people all of the time.

As for "honesty," during his campaign for Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney promised judicial reform for Massachusetts. The reality is he left the system more broken than it was before his term in office. Judge Tuttman is not an isolated incident. Governor Romney also nominated and pushed for the confirmation of Judge Mitchel J. Sikora to the Massachusetts Court of Appeals. When Romney did this, he was made personally aware by me that Judge Sikora had a track record of "outrageous" leniency toward violent criminals. By way of example only, prior to the judicial confirmation hearing, members of the public made Governor Romney personally aware that Judge Sikora had:

 Acquitted the man who killed Jacqueline O' Donald finding that, giving her the date-rape drug GBL was not "reckless or wanton" enough to sustain the charge of manslaughter because Dolan "did not know the drug was dangerous to the point of grave bodily harm." (See Boston Globe article dated December 31, 2003, "Plymouth Man, 34 Cleared in Death")

 Released a rapist from the Treatment Center for the Sexually Dangerous in Bridgewater, over the strenuous objections of the Department of Corrections. Governor Cellucci called Sikora's decision "outrageous." Shortly after Judge Sikora released him, the rapist/pedophile was arrested for stalking girls with a rope, rock, and knife in his car, - his weapons of choice. (See Boston Herald article dated March 12, 1999, "Freed Mass. Rapist Arrested in UConn Stalking Incidents")

 Conducted Monty-Python type trials complete with jurors dressed in Halloween costumes. (See Boston Herald article dated October 31, 2004, "Judges Trick No Treat for Litigants")

The above are merely a few examples of the abhorrent behavior of Judge Mitchel Sikora. The public record documents that Judge Sikora was untruthful during his confirmation hearing. In spite of his personal knowledge of that kind of record (and I have the documents that prove it), Governor Romney elevated Judge Sikora to a higher court. If Romney becomes president of America, we will see a callous disregard for the quality of the federal judicial appointments and the protection of the public.

What Romney has done is assure that Huck and McCain voters will stick together once the other is eliminated. He is a negative fool along with the National Review and Rush and Hannity and Drudge and all of the other conservative media elites who likely bet big money on Intrade and are trying to fix the election by pushing this giant phony on us. I'd vote for Paris Hilton before I'd vote for this negative attack dog.

Mitt comes across too robotic and cold to me. He is much to calculated. He wants to win at any cost. I want someone that wants to serve from the heart as a servant. Senator McCain and Governor Huckabee have a heart for the people of this country. Thanks.

I think it is funny that Republicans are wrestling so hard to “make sure” they get the right guy.

The bottom line is Mitt Romney is the only candidate who stands a chance of winning against a Hillary Obama (pres/vp) ticket. Don’t waste your primary vote on someone who has no chance of winning.

Evangelicals:
what good will Huck do your faith when he is deciding what streets to re pave in Little Rock in 2009?

War heroes:
What good will McCain do for your legacy when he is making global warming documentaries in 2009?

People who watched 9/11 from a couch in Tulsa:
What good will Guiliani do for your rural security when he is teaching at NYU in 2009?

***IMPORTANT: A primary vote for Huckabee, Guiliani, or McCain is a November vote for Hillary and Obama. Period.

Republicans need to vote ROMNEY or suck it up until 2016.

For those that call Mitt a phony, I have this to say to you. I would Romney a savy political man. I am "Very Pleased" that Mitt Romney, was able to fool the stupid voters of Massachusetts into voting for him so he could enact "Conservative Policies" in this state.

Some say Mitt is for universal health care. I agree. This is what should not fool us fellow Conservatives though. Mitt's state health plan was created though Capitalism NOT Socialism. There is a Huge difference.

Both plans are universal care. The difference, Mitts policies were created though Capitalism.
Unlike Hillary Clinton's plan which gives universal health care though government controls and this is Socialism.

This is the reason we are spooked by the words Universal Health Care or U.H.C. Don't let it fool you. If issurance is agreed and not forced down our throats, then its called choice. If it is a choice then we can chose for or against it. This is a good thing for at least now we have an option and feel like we are in control of our lives. It's called insurance, and we all would like to have more of it, if its not too expensive that is. I do at least.

Secondly, Mitt again, was smart enough to Fool the Stupid Liberals of Massachusetts into thinking he was a one of them. HAHAH, god Mitt, Republicans need you to help us win some Elections with your smart savy ways. With Mitts brains we can make the idiot Democrats vote for us hahaha. Case in point, do Liberals VETO bills that Expand Abortion rights???? Of course not.

Mitt Romney Vetoed several such bills. at the bottom of this comment I have provided the proof. I have concluded, that Mitt talked like a liberal but lead like a Conservative.

Ask yourself this question Romney doubters. If Mitt is so liberal then why does N.A.R.A.L. and Planned DeathHood have so much comtempt in their baby killing hearts?

Just read what N.A.R.A.L. thinks of Mitt at the links below. They hate him. This is a GOOD SIGN. But what do I know im ProLife so im biased.

The facts below prove my points. Just take the time to read.

Now after read this new information. Im certain you will realize actions speak louder than Romney's previous words. The Veto Pen is quite convincing.

romney has my vote. you people have short memories. his ads in the beginning were sooooo positive and then everyone started piling the garbage on him as he climbed to the top of the list, and so he had to start defending himself. this is not negative action it is defensive action.

Jenner, you are right on. Huckabee has no chance in a general election. Why do you think the liberal media is pushing him so hard and giving him a free pass on the issues? McCain is to old and not a conservative... period. He has supported some the most off the wall stuff ever proposed! Rudy has to much luggage, and if he gets the nommination, we will all be able to sit and hear about it in detail from the Democrates, and Thompson can't deliver a speech without a script. If we don't get over this bigotry and rally behind Romney, you are right...our party, the Republicans, won't be able to get back in the race till at least 2016. Wake up folks before it is to late!! The liberal media is trying to pick our candadate so they can win the 2008 election.

I'm simply disgusted to see this kind of attacks on a national hero like Sen. McCain.

Not exactly the ad (politic is not for babys), but the comments i've read here.
