DES MOINES – Ron Paul has done it again.
Supporters of Congressman Paul presidential campaign raised $6.1 million yesterday through online donations, according to the campaign, making it the biggest fundraising day in the Web's history and the best for any Republican candidate, anywhere, this year.
"This demonstrates a lot of grassroots growth," said.Jesse Benton, Paul's chief spokesman, who noted that more than half of the nearly 60,000 donors were first-time contributors.
As pleased as the campaign was with Sunday's massive haul – picked to coincide with the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party – the [[drive]] was not orchestrated by the campaign itself, but by an online army of volunteers, many who have never been involved in politics before.
Trevor Lyman, who set up the Web page for the project, told the Tribune last Monday that he was inspired by Paul's beliefs in the Constitution, his libertarian opinions and his plan to withdrawal troops from Iraq immediately.
Benton said the campaign will use the money for creating more television and radio commercials and buying more media time to run those spots. (It's also being used for travel; Paul is scheduled to appear at several stops in Des Moines today.)
"We've also pulled the trigger and just hired 99 county coordinates in Iowa," he said. "Plus we're promoting the 'Christmas Vacation' program, which will pay the room, board and expenses of college students who want to go to Iowa or New Hampshire during their winter breaks."
The previous record for single-day fundraising by a Republican candidate in this election cycle was $4.2 million, set Nov. 5. The candidate that time?
Ron Paul.

I expect to see at least 1 or 2 hundred posts from Pauls busy supporters. Good for them. He would be the only one from the right that I would even consider. The rest are nothing more than Bush clones (clowns).

This is how it will be reported on Chris Matthews tonight....
"Ron Paul sets the one day fundraising record for any candidate ever. Now on to more important news, will Hillary's hairstyle hurt her campaign. Let's talk to a 5 member panel to talk about her for a half hour."

Thanks for covering this historic achievement. The cable news networks have barely mentioned it. MSNBC.com does not, as of 8:50am EST have a single word about it. MSNBC's Willie Geist reported the story as "News You Can't Use" and, even though the story was 8 hours old, underreported the amount raised by $900,000.

Who do these people think they are? Do you folks really believe you can overthrow the American Empire?
Face it, "if you are not with us , you are against us." The American Empire thrives on killing and murder, it has been the modus operandi for almost 100 years now. Just try to find a 12-month period where we have not been killing people abroad in the last 50 years.
Half of the USA believes what they are told- Iraq was involved in 9-11, they have WMD and soon enough Iran will start to feel the end of the sword.
Instead of sending your money to a 'peace-nik' wannabe candidate, you should be saving all you can so you can pay the war taxes to be levied by Huckabee, Clinton, Romney, or whomever the Diebold voting machines elect.
"It does not matter who get the most votes, it matters who counts the votes" -Joseph Stalin
Nice job though- You got my attention, and I will be reading up on Paul.

I still find it funny that people still are not realizing how powerful we are as a people. No matter how the media tries to downplay us we will only turn that into working HARDER.
Great article and hope to see it talked about on tv as well.

If you don't count pledges that may or may not have been fulfilled, Hillary's big day was about 3 million short of the record. See the FEC report.

While it's impressive that Paul is getting a lot of "working people" donations and no Corporate help, these same donors will still back the Big Corporate Republican who has no interest in helping "working people".

Ron Paul will be the next president. He is an honest man, not a dirty politician who says what his changing audience wants to hear. He brings Hope to the people and he is the only one who can save us from the neocon barbarians who threaten to start more wars including a nuclear war. They are a threat to the survival of this planet.
Posted by: Rolando Bini | December 17, 2007 9:31 AM
Readers should also note Paul's performance in straw polls.
He wins most of them outright, like the FreedomWorks straw poll, and the Virginia Republican straw poll.
Understand how persecuted this man is - in "liberal" San Fransisco, the Republican Alliance canceled their straw poll when hundreds of Paul supporters made it obvious that he would win easily.
Did you hear about that? No? Hm. Maybe libertarians are correct when they claim that there is media and mainstream political bias against them, their ideas, and leaders.
What do people try to shut down? The truth. Demand the truth about Ron Paul and his positions from the mainstream media. Republicans should demand that their party stop stonewalling him.
America doesn't need another tax and spend republicrats. We need a constitutional, economic expert who puts the freedom of the individual first.
Ron Paul, please. Right now.

That has to be a first!

Ron Paul is so refreshing... Showcase his voting records, his belief in small government to the point where he never has taken a paid junket, and does not accept or participate in the lucrative government pension program.
Who else can claim this integrity? He's princapaled, at every level...
Posted by: David | December 17, 2007 9:34 AM
Paul is a true statesmen and offers a badly needed change back to the values that made America strong in the first place. Plus, the value of the "peace dividend" should not be underestimated.

Here in the United Kingdom there are meet up groups for Ron Paul. People are beginning to realise US foreign policy needs to change. It has a negative global impact on countries directly and indirectly. Ron Paul's ideals rooted in the constitution can only galvanise and bring together a disinherited generation and improve stability economically and prevent future pre-emptive attacks against sovereign nations.

Why do you add qualifiers? Its not the greatest by a Republican candidate, or the greatest WEB effort.
Its the greatest amount in a 24-hour period, ever. Period.
There is no need to pigeon-hole the truth.

Ron Paul is the republicrites John Dean. Remember when the Weakly Standard put Dean's face on the cover and the headline said "Please nominate this man!"? Same-o here this year. I like RP, but he's too close to real conservatism for republicrites to vote for him (for example, his call for complete and immediate with drawl from the quagmire in Iraq). He wouldn't bomb Iran, he wouldn't torture prisoners, nor ship them overseas to be tortured. He'd not take as much money as he could from vested corporate interests and run up the deficit so helliburton could get rich. Nope, RP would do the exact opposite of everything that's been done by the current residents, and he'd be better at that. And that would prove that the last 7 years have been an aberrant nightmare of bad leaders making bad decisions and hiding the truth from the world.
And that would upset all the delusional global-warming-denying intolerant fearmongering xenophobes that troll this blog like the selfish cousin-marrying revisionist bu$heviks they are.

Some may not agree with limited Federal government, but most people seem to. Remember we give the government power - not the other way around. Change is possible. Go Ron!
Posted by: TJF | December 17, 2007 11:15 AM
For all the democrats who read this please understand that Paul supporters are being pulled from the entire spectrum of politics.
There are conservative republicans that want small government and low taxes.
There are independents against 2 party politics who want a return to the constitution.
There are liberals who want someone to fight for a restoration of habeas corpus , free speech and no wars.
It is not the man, it is the message that is pulling us all together. Google him, do some reading, Don't spend all your time on Fox, Cnn, and MSNBC. Start thinking for yourself and asking questions.
Posted by: adrian | December 17, 2007 11:22 AM
Thank you for the positive article. One editorial comment however, both the title and first paragraph of your piece downplay the significance of the grassroots supporters fundraising achievements. Whether intended or not, referring to the money as "web money" and "online donations" leaves the implication that the movement is supported by a niche group of zealous computer users and that somehow "web" money is different from "non-web" money. This was $6.1 million REAL dollars actually collected (not just pledged to) by the campaign in a single day... the largest amount EVER, with or without the internet.

The Republi-crats (we really only have one party in this country) are almost certain to find a way to keep Ron Paul from getting his party's nomination, so those of us who love American and the U.S. Constituion should probably be looking down the road to what is next? I think its DISGUSTING that the censored media is under control of a few people...If any other Candidate had raised over 6Million in 24 hours it would have made the front page of every newspaper out there! It would have been the top topic of every network...
My prayer is that the average person will see this lack of mention in the news and ask why would the media ignore a Candidate that speaks on the issues of Americans soul, heart and given rights...
http://www.ronpaullibrary.org/index.php
Fellow Americans do your research on the issues we face and the Candidates actions...Don't fall victim to the placation of many Candidates as well as the media...Show them the people control this country not the corporations!

Great article Jason, but think about the real impact of a 6-million-dollar day and an 18-million-dollar quarter. Think about the impact of having 85,000+ volunteers in over 1000 cities nationwide.
The Republican race is still wide open, with 6 viable candidates (if you include McCain and Thompson.) If no one delivers a knockout blow in January, only Paul, Romney, and maybe Giuliani will have the resources to contest this thing all the way to the convention.

During his 20 years in Congress, Ron Paul:
Has never taken a government-paid junket, has never voted himself a pay raise, and does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program. He has never voted for an unbalanced budget or to raise taxes. (Now, there is a Statesman with integrity, who walks the talk).
Paul has received more donations from the troops then any other candidate. He served his country as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force for 5 years. He voted against the war in Iraq, instead urged Congress to hunt down the terrorists responsible fo 9/11. Ron Paul will bring out troops home immediately to protect our national security and our borders here at home.
Ron Paul is a Christian with true Christian values. He is not like other Christians who are warmongers, who support illegal pre-emptive wars, torture, and the killing of hundrends of thousand of innocent humans. We owe nearly 10 trillion dollars, and continue to borrow money from China and others for this illegal war. We are virtually bankrupt. There is no such thing as a "War or terror, no more than "War on Thugs". Terror is not a country, it is a tactic that can never be stopped, thus, this allows for this war to continue for ever. Wake up!

so does Ron Paul's support for and from white supremacists have anything to do with his campaign success? what about the income tax? it strikes me as odd that a candidate can make the news when he raises money but not for his politics. isn't the fact that Ron Paul's disinguishing feature is his inexplicable success in the kind of big-money politics that drives Washington-as-usual kind of contradictory, given his maverick reputation? anyone?

As Ron Paul's myspace moderator I would like to say Thank YOU to all all the supporters who spread the message of true freedom and liberty yesterday and contributed what they could to support Ron Paul. The significance of yesterdays money raising was that it beat not only ALL online records in political fundraising history, it beat all OFFLINE one day records as well, beating John Kerry's fundraising record of nearly $6 Million in the last election cycle. A difference, however, between Ron Paul and all of the other candidates, including the old Kerry record, is that Ron Paul has more supporters willing to pull $50 to $100 out of their pockers. The rest of the major candidates have big corporate and narrow special interests to thank for their money. Ron Paul is for the people.

Ron Paul may be the one to bring staunch Democrats over to vote Republican because he seems to be the only one who has been listening to the American people about withdrawing from Iraq and about the flagrant violations of our Constitution. While Obama and Clinton are romancing big celebrities and corporate sponsor, Ron's supporters are everyday Americans. If Ron makes it on the ticket, he will be a breath of fresh air for the democratic process. So far, none of the major leaders of either party has peeked my fancy.

Ron Paul has awoken thousands to the control of the Debt-Money owners who de facto rule the earth.
He is the final shimmer of a beautifully radiant diamond amidst a black wasteland of tyranny, corruption, and oligarchy.
He is a truly radiant soul: creative, moral, loving, and no doubt exudes the beauty of our universal creator above.
What is astounding is Christians, Jews, Muslims, Bhuddists, Hindus, all love him. He represents the good in all of us. I finally have a role model. I am inspired to be a better human being.
No emire, and no tyranny is more powerful than the beautiful creative energy which we all have within us.
God willing, the world will change.
God bless you Ron Paul.

What is happening here is that ordinary Americans are beginning to wake up to what their government has been doing to them their whole lives. Some are newly involved in politics and will vote for their first time. Others are stanch supporters of one party or another. Now, they are realizing the parties are irrelevant. The government does not serve at the behest of its people anymore. It's all too obvious now. This is a breaking point, a tide is turning and ordinary Americans of all ages, political affiliations, social and economic backgrounds are coming together in support of some basic ideals -- life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We're realizing our money is controlled by outside interests, literally printed with NO sound backing, just our "trust" in the Federal Reserve Bank, which is neither federal nor a bank, and their are no reserves. As a country, we are in debt up to our children's eyeballs. No longer can we ignore this. No longer can we support endless wars and world domination at the expense of our entire nation's future. We are doomed to repeat what has happened to every Empire in history. So be it. Let it all crumble away as Dr. Ron Paul steps up and leads our country to a new hope. We can return to sound money, fiscal responsibility, smaller government, return the powers back to the people and their States, get the government out of our back pockets and wallets. Let our families produce what we need again, instead of relying on foreign sources of everything. Big Government incentives keep of jobs flowing to other countries and Big Corporations and their lobbiests having Big Government grant them advantages over the innovators, imagineers, and inspired individuals. We are so far from a "free market" it is ridiculous. We are a "controlled, managed, regulated" trade economy right now. Our Federal government helps the global corporations eliminate competition. This has got to stop already.
Our Constitution is the glue that holds our country together, not our out of control government. If you don't believe that it is out of control, or that somehow it is following the Constitution (which it is not), then just look at our $1,000,000.00 (ONE MILLION DOLLARS) per MINUTE debt that our "leaders" are racking up in our names which our grandchildren will be indebted slaves to. Look at our domestic policies (Federal government ties our hands and holds carrots in front of us) versus our Foreign policies. We take better care of WAR PROFITEERS and their cronies than our own citizens. This is bull and we're not taking it lying down any more.
Dr. Ron Paul's message is simple: return to the Constitution to which our leaders and military have ALREADY sworn to uphold, protect and serve (which they ignore). That's why he votes against anything that is against the Constitution.
Just about every word Dr. Paul has written, every speech he has spoken, ever bill he has proposed, can be found at http://www.ronpaullibrary.org and if you'd like to listen online to a Ron Paul radio station, check out http://www.rprradio.com
I am voting for Dr. Paul, my first Republican. This country is still a Republic, is it not? The rest of the candidates seem to have forgotten that.

If the fool and his money [are] soon parted, how's that 50% taxes you're paying? Didn't know that? Add them up. Find the hidden ones.
Gotta be a reason? How about the media are largely folks like you who think liberty is "icky?"
As for the last--Ron Paul is no fool. The media already know they underestimated him, and those of us who understand liberty enough to understand his message--those who have not been inculcated.

I am not impressed with this crackpot right-wing Libertarian gynocologist who can raise cash but is mired with 3% of the vote.
There must be a reason for that.
I suppose America has had enough bunker mentality extremism, an ideology which discards our 3 branches of government and the fact that America IS a member of the world community.

Congratulations Ron Paul! I'm working at getting both of my parents to caucus for Ron Paul here in Iowa. We have a small precinct, so my two parents plus a few of my friends may be able to swing it in favor of Ron Paul. I'll also be going (to watch) but I'll be unable to vote because I'm only 16. You owe winning this precinct to me, Ron! :D
Good luck Ron Paul!

While I don't agree with some of the things in this article, it is good to see some reasonably accurate press for Ron Paul.
Ron Paul's message has momentum.

Thank you for actually writing like a reporter - the facts, just the facts.
Unbelievable!
No mention of "underdog," "low in the polls," "long-shot," "cranky, wacky, irritable and old", "fringe supporters," "tin foil hats"...
The Baltimore Sun must be a legitimate newspaper.
What a novel idea.

Shane,
You are basically correct; Libertarians want to dismantle all gvmt. controll. Add to your list, building codes, zoning laws, the public way in the form of steets, etc.
Yet Paulie, the 'Libertarian' doesn't want us to have any pot, or allow a woman to choose an abortion.
BTW, am looking forward to being my own Air Traffic Controller.
What an odd Libertarian....

The donations to Ron Paul's campaign are not "pledges". They are real-time, on the spot, credit card and Paypal transactions. No different than when you plunk down your credit card at a restaraunt, or buy something online using Paypal.

Ron Paul is like a cozy, blanket! He delivers the comfort and understanding our nation is desperately craving in these uncertain times. A "we are in this together" message I like.
I grew up during the Reagan era and have sorely missed the message that America is the shinning example of freedom on the hill. It was a great time to grow up because American's had such pride and love for our country. We had confidence in ourselves and our way of life.
I missed those days until Ron Paul. He has restored my optimism and belief that my nation can be great again. No endless scandals, no endless wars, just a focus on us, Americans. I want my nation back on track and heading in the right direction again, together.
I like Ron Paul's message of small government, small taxes, and big ideas!
I believe in his health care plan and trust Dr. Ron Paul more than any other candidate to fix, not complicate the problems and expenses. Face it, other candidates plans will make the insurance companies even more wealthy and powerful with no benefit to us. The government can't even take care of soldiers returning from war, how will they take care of us?
I can't believe there was a time of health care being "charitable" and focused on what was best for the patient. He lived it, now I want it. I want it for my children. I really like Ron Paul's message and plan to vote for him in 2008!

I think the fact that this was done on the Tea Party anniversary and the MSM mostly ignored this, shows some level of disinterest in American history. I find it kind of refreashing to see the BSun willing to report actual news, rather than spreading superstition or lies. If Paul wins the nomination in Iowa or New Hampshire I think this will be an amazing election, at least exciting instead of another Big Government pow wow, like ther e have been for the last 30 years. Enough with all the spending and liberalizing, finally can we have a real pull back for a change? A real shrinkage, I've been active and not apathetic about this since I first voted 19 years ago, not voting for any of the Bush's nor wanting to be lied to by anymore Clintons, it really seems a change maybe about to happen.

Ron Paul voted against a nationwide do-not-call registry, he's in with Lyndon Larouche and the Patriot movement, he wants to abolish minimum wage, he's in favour of laws against burning the flag, he's voted to repeal the Occupational Helath & Safety Act, he's in favour of putting guns back in schools, he's voted to take back the Panama Canal....

I love him. He's the greatest thing to happen to the Republicans. I hope he wins their nomination with his fantastic fundraising skills. I want to see him campaign for President!
