by Frank James
Our former Tribune collegue, Davd Lightman now with McClatchy, has an interesting piece today about Ron Paul's supporters being an eclectic mix of voters.
WASHINGTON — If Ron Paul's supporters got together for a family portrait, it would be one of those pictures in which no one seems to resemble anyone else.
"You have old-school Republicans, the conservatives who backed Barry Goldwater (in 1964). You have the antiwar crowd who are principled non-interventionists," said Jim Forsythe, a former Air Force major who's organized meet-and-greet sessions in New Hampshire for the Texas congressman and Republican presidential candidate.
You also have businessmen tired of government regulation, college students who like his views on holistic medicine and middle-aged folks who don't see Social Security helping them in a few years. There are people who supported Democrat Howard Dean four years ago and others who backed conservative Republican Pat Buchanan in the 1990s.
What brings them together is a common belief that government is too big, obtrusive and unresponsive.
"It's a desire to get government out of my life. That's it," said Rick Grote, a pharmacist in Hampton, Iowa.
The story doesn't really answer the question of whether Paul's supporters are really any more divergent than the supporters of say, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani who range from Christian conservatives to Republicans in name only.
While Paul's supporters may be a varied group, one thing they have in common is their excitement about their candidate.
That's also a difference they have with the supporters of other Republican candidates who frequently seem less energized about their favorite presidential hopeful than the Paulites.

With all of David Lightman's gushy pieces about Sen. Chris Dudd, I would have thought he would have gone to work for the one-half of the senator sandwich. But, perhaps, Lightman knew Dudd has no chance to become prez, so he realized that wouldn't be a good career move.

That excitement over RP, combined with the lack of enthusiasm by supporters for other candidates, will become a PAGE ONE story in Feb 2008.
Posted by: Fazsha | December 7, 2007 9:08 AM
Amen!!! That's what will bring that out in droves and may actually allow him to beat the other candidates.

A very big tent indeed- come join if you want to elect a leader who is honest and a true statesman.
If you want the real hope of a balanced budget Ron Paul has a plan for us to do it- and it makes sense.
We know the other candidates will continue to spend recklessly.
Vote for Ron Paul

...and that is the most powerful statement about Dr. Pauls supporters. The fact is, we ARE a diverse nation with a wide array of personal views. Consequently, you cannot expect to "shoehorn" people into a single (or even a handful) of ideals. Ron Paul seems to be the only candidate that understands this simple fact, which is reflected in the diverse make-up of his supporters.
Posted by: Bill | December 7, 2007 9:21 AM
I don't know. I think Romney supporters are as excited, there just aren't that many of them. Of course, I'd be excited, too, if someone gave me free meals, travel expenses, and tickets to fair-like events.

Ron Paul has awoken many sleeping (and apatheic) Americans. It's so refreshing to have a candidate for President that knows the issues thoroughly and resonates with so many informed people.
Posted by: John Loin | December 7, 2007 9:27 AM
Remember wB Clinton's first campaign - "it's the economy stupid." Ron Paul has studied economics and history. He knows more about it than our lovely feds who keep pumping worthless money into our system.
Ask what is happening each time interest rates are cut. They cut those rates by printing more money, which deflates the value of the dollar. Poor people saving are hurt hardest because their meager savings lose purchasing power. Wall street fat cats and big corporations get their cut though, so who cares about the elderly on fixed incomes.
The real story that isn't covered by anyone is what experts in finance and business think of Ron Paul. Many of them think that Ron Paul is the only one who can save this country from almost total collapse.
So if you want empty platitudes and a willing ignorance of problems we face, vote for the Dem or Republican corporate shills. If you want someone who takes problems seriously, and who has solutions, vote for Ron Paul.

Our excitement in not so much about Dr. Paul, who is a very fine man but not a great speaker or communicator. We are excited about FREEDOM. Paul's strength lay in a lifetime of study of the Constitution, our fundamental law, and other founding documents (Federalist papers, etc) combined with many years experience in both the 'real' work-a-day world as a Ob.Gyn. and many years in Congress seeing how the present system does and does not work.
As a small, limited government conservative with a non-interventionist foreign policy and a good understanding of State and local rights, we love Paul FOR ALL HE WON'T DO FOR US AND TO US.
So, let's have a revolution in this country without a drop of blood being shed. Drop a c-note on ronpaul2008.com on 16 December 07 in memory of the TEA PARTY.

Ron Paul's support comes from Americans.
Those who hate the military, those who serve in the military. Those who go to church, those who spit on the sidewalk. Those who are black, white, and brown as well as those who don't like anybody with a different skin tone than themselves.
Those who own businesses, those who don't work.
Those who are "conspiracy nuts", those who simply know GW Bush needs to read the Constitution. Old people, students, baby boomers. Gays and straights. Rich and poor.
Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Libertarians.
All fed up with the status quo and realizing a vote for the lesser of two evils...is still evil.
What could possibly unite this diverse group?
We all know an honest man when we see him. We all know Govenment's primary function is supposed to be to protect liberty, not spend us into oblivion and lie to us at every opportunity.
Many of us have even read the bill of rights...imagine that!
Do I agree with everything Ron Paul says...no, do I think he's head and shoulders above the rest? Absolutely.
Google Ron Paul for President 2008.

Thank you for the article, Frank. And thanks for posting it, BaltimoreSun.com!
I like to think of the Paul supporters' "eclectic mix" as being emblematic of the "melting pot" that is America. It's also not lost on many of us that the fascinating, enthusiastic grassroots participation of his supporters also serves as a model for the focus on lessening the heavy-handed power of Washington - a vision that a Paul administration would foster.
Posted by: Darryl Schmitz | December 7, 2007 9:41 AM
Supporters of Dr. Ron Paul are more energized than those of other candidates because Dr. Paul is the only presidential candidate in modern history who has the political courage to question the entire Post-1945 American Imperium.
Paul is basically offering the same critique of American foreign policies as Noam Chomsky, Chalmers Johnson and a mojority of college professors educated in forieign affairs around the world.
Dr. Paul is the equivelent of the stranger "later believed to be a lunatic" in Mark Twain's "The War Prayer." (Google "the war prayer) an one will see what I mean.

Is the Paul campaign going to rely on the youth voters to come out in droves? History shows us they rarely do and I feel that a large portion of his support is from the pro-marijuana youth.

Our excitement for Ron Paul is his message of Freedom and less government. I can't wait to cast my vote for Ron Paul, and for the future of our Country.

The freedom message brings us together! I have to say I really enjoy being part of this, even in my small way. I don't even know where our state headquarters is, if we have one, yet I and many others pay for our own materials and campaign like crazy for Ron Paul!
I have met some of the most wonderful people doing this. You are absolutely right, we are a diverse group and if it were not for Ron Paul many of us would still be divided by race, religion, or some other pidgeon hole you could put us in. But no longer! We are one, we are America, and we choose Ron Paul!

The article is kind of pointless, although any positive article is aprechiated. Ron Paul supporters can be summarized in a single word: Americans!
No need for media to look for some special knowhow, or which population segments. Its the common people and the message for personal liberty and all that it entails. Now you know the secret.
RON PAUL ON THE ISSUES
The Environment — "Nobody has a right to pollute anybody's property, air, or water."
Campaigning — "Very powerful special interests are in charge of both parties. There is no serious intent to have democracy in this country."
The Economy — "The best measurement of an empire is the value of a nation's currency, and the dollar is getting weaker and weaker. We can tide people over at home if we stop spending overseas."
Iraq — "They say there'll be chaos if we leave. What do we have over there now? The same people who say 'stay' said it'd be a cakewalk."
Government — "All political action should be directed toward protecting individual liberty."
The Solution — "We can solve all of our problems by obeying the Constitution."
Posted by: Mark | December 7, 2007 11:16 AM
Ron Paul is popular with the 18-29 crowd but his support doesn't stop there. His message really does draw a diverse crowd with varied ideology, because the constitution was designed for that - a compromise that limits the power of government in order to prevent one interest group or another from gaining too much influence.
Posted by: underground | December 7, 2007 11:24 AM

I've been a libertarian for over thirty years, and I voted for Ron Paul in '88. I was skeptical about the possibilities for liberty in my lifetime, but the outpouring of support for this thoughtful yet humble gentleman and the message that he brings to America has given me hope beyond my wildest dreams. Having said that, he still is being ignored by the mainstream media and most of all the neo-conservative pundits who control the radio waves. Paul frightens them, and with good reason, because his success would mean that these charlatans would no longer be in control of one of the two "legal" political parties.
Posted by: Craig | December 7, 2007 11:49 AM
You know what's the best thing about Ron Paul? He didn't let his principles get in the way of taking almost a half billion dollars worth of pork this year. I'm sure his budget-balancing plan will manage to work in some nice cash rewards for his home district.
Because everyone knows that the Constitution is all about the shrimping subsidies.

DAWN OF THE AMERICAN REFORMATION, AND END OF THE ERA OF THE UGLY AMERICAN
This Ron Paul Libertarian rebellion is an escalation and re-orientation of the American Cultural War, by the American People, against the rising governmental tyranny by Neo-Con Republicans and Neo-Lib Democrats.
It is sweeping across America like a wildfire - ignited by the illegal and unnecessary invasion of Iraq. It raises many crucial questions, such as:
Where does the American Constitution give my government the right to sacrifice precious American wealth and blood, in interests of domestic and foreign lobbies?
Where does the American Constitution give my government the right to allow my nation to be invaded and permanently occupied by illegal aliens?
Where does the American Constitution give my government the right to support the sacrificial killing of children, by their own mothers?
Where does the American Constitution give my government the right to discriminate against traditional religious practices in public schools, universities, marriage institutions, armed forces, and governmental offices?
This creeping governmental tyranny, driven by perverse special interests, has now been going on for so many decades, like the illegal alien invasion, that the impending American Reformation is regarded with fear and loathing, by those who are to lose their illicit gains.
Like Gandhi, Ron Paul is drawing his intrepid volunteers from the full spectrum of humanity; and World is cheering him on to victory.

Remember that a President alone cannot enact legislation. So if elected, Mr. Paul would have a difficult time getting any of his ideas into law without the help of the House/Senate.
It is fun to see candidates out there who shake things up and aren't the typical "I'll tell you what you want to hear".
Posted by: Peter | December 7, 2007 12:28 PM
Although the television coverage of Paul doesn't begin to do justice to him, the power of his message and the consistency of that message with his personal life and with his voting message have caused his name and cause to spread like wildfire. Everyone I talk to want to know more about Ron Paul.Nobody outside of isolated circles seems to care about Hillary or the Republicans. Ron Paul has even been removed from various polls because he kept winning (e.g. the Pajamas Media poll). Why don't you write an article about that?

Ron Paul's campaign for President is damaging to the libertarian movement. He associates us libertarians with the fringe: conspiratorialists, Larouchie type extremists,
even Anti-Israel movements.
We need to mainstream the libertarian movement away from the Ron Paul types.
Rudy Giuliani leans libertarian. He's not perfect, but he's "fiscally conservative/socially tolerant."
I'm voting for Giuliani, and will NOT support Ron Paul.

But a small bomb it was - that was because
Of what followed in forty one days
It was all the media could say
With Liberty stirred with our faithful word
Boston’s Tea Party again held sway
We yelled with our money - “Freedom’s not funny”
We shouted - “Moneybombs away!”
Remember, remember the 16th of December
We the people will have our say

I could not agree more with the suggestion by Mr. William Patton Jr that we read "The War Prayer" by Mark Twain. I did so and was chilled by its end. I think it should certainly be added to Rudy's reading list at the very least. I hope everyone who supports the war in Iraq and the coming war in Iran will take the time to read it. My blood boils and my heart breaks when I contemplate the death of my daughter, a US Army soldier, in either place and yet I feel powerless to stop it from happening. We must stop these wars, and if Dr. Paul is not elected, I can only hope that we will rise up in protest the likes of which this nation has never seen. To do otherwise is unconscionable. Please read the War Prayer; just Google it.

What excites me most about this campaign is how the youth are becoming energized! Let's face it, Dr. Paul is a long shot (but one well worth supporting -mind you - as he is the ONLY candidate from either of the two major parties advocating liberty), but win or loose, Dr Paul is awakening a new generation, and creating a renewed sense of Liberty that has been absent from the public debate for FAR too long! For 30 years, the Libertarian Party has been saying the very same things that Dr Paul is saying now (Ron Paul even ran for president on their ticket a few years back - for you younger voters reading this). But Dr Paul is currently reaching an untapped audience mainly because, being in a major party, people are listening who wouldn't otherwise look at "3rd parties" and as such, are now hearing the libertarian message. Hopefully Dr Paul will make it through the primaries and go head-to-head with whatever statist that is anointed on the Democratic ticket, and we will get to choose Liberty in the '08 election!!! But if not, I beg you to not let this revolution end here. No matter what happens in the primaries or general election, we must keep this liberty train moving. Hopefully, all Dr Paul supporters will join the Libertarian Party and continue the great work that he has begun. Let's take back America!

We have so much communication and access to information that it will be difficult for companies to work against the people and hide it. Right now they are in it with the government and protected.
The farther away the power is, the harder it is to influence.

Dondero and Guiliani supporters:
How can you claim with a straight face that a man who say the following "leans libertarian"?
"We look upon authority too often and focus over and over again, for 30 or 40 or 50 years, as if there is something wrong with authority. We see only the oppressive side of authority. Maybe it comes out of our history and our background. What we don't see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do. " -Rudy Guiliani
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A01E2D9173CF933A15750C0A962958260
Guiliani may be libertarian in terms of believing he has the right to do what is best for him regardless of a contract (his marital vows) but that's about it.
ROMNEY Supporters:
"Getting things done" is not the job description of the President of the United States of America.
The following is what they are sworn in to do:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
The only person who has proven he will do this by doing it for 10 terms in Congress is Dr. Ronald Paul. "To the best of my abiity" doesn't go far with most people because as John McCain says "we came to change Washington, but Washington changed us" due to their best ability not being that good. Washington didn't and won't change Dr. Paul. Remember that Moses couldn't speak very well either when he led the Isrealites out of captivity-that's why Aaron was appointed.

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both." - Benjamin Franklin
"There is no security on this earth, there is only opportunity." - Douglas MacArthur
"No one can build his security upon the nobleness of another person." - Willa Cather
"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure." - Helen Keller
And in contrast to these ideas, Franklin Roosevelt, proclaimed in his Annual Message to Congress in January, 1944:
"The one supreme objective for the future, which we discussed for each nation individually, and for all the United Nations, can be summed up in one word: Security. And that means not only physical security which provides safety from attacks by aggressors. It means also economic security, social security, moral security...
We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all…"
Roosevelt listed these new rights as, “The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries, or shops or farms or mines of the Nation; The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation; The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living; The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad; The right of every family to a decent home; The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health; The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment; The right to a good education.”
Roosevelt's now obese nanny state that promised to establish security and prosperity by fulfilling these "second" rights is failing on all counts because it has trampled on the individual Liberties defined in America's first Bill of Rights defined by We the People.
The current campaign finance law is a prime example of trashing the First Amendment's guarantee of free speech in order to provide job security for incumbent politicians.
Benjamin Franklin was right, and Franklin Roosevelt was wrong.
Choose Liberty over security. Support and vote for a true Champion of the Constitution, Ron Paul.

Posted by: tanah | December 7, 2007 5:53 PM
Ron Paul never said “the government plans SECRETLY to build [ a superhighway ] from Canada to Mexico.”
( my caps )
His answer on the CNN debate was quite clear that he does not believe in any secret conspiracies. He said that the issues are ideological, and as he believes the more centralized and consolidated a government is, eg, our federal government, the more dangerous to individual liberty it may be, he has concern about international bodies arrogating our sovereignty.
Every fact he cited is easily confirmed with a little googling.
The pendulum has swung way too far to the welfare/warfare state. Only Ron Paul will reverse this truly frightening trend.

Well, good luck to you Dr. Paul. This Democrat won't ever vote for you, but if you drag the Republic party into the 20th century, you will have done a great service. Until you abandon the washed up and incoherent Republic party, I'm not really interested in what you have to say. Now if you were to run as an Independent....

Both sheep and wild geese like to dine on green grass.
Sheep need a shepherd to guide them to green pastures. The shepherd controls his sheep so that he can either fleece them or make mutton stew.
Wild geese can find the next green pasture on their own. The wild geese poop on the shepherd's head as they take flight to fly in a V for victory formation with the Ron Paul blimp.
Those who support Ron Paul will appreciate this metaphor. Those who don't are sheeple who like to be chased around by the shepherd's border collies.

We not only need Ron Paul in Government we need the long term House and Senate OUT! Vote them all out in 2008, and vote in all new 3rd party candidates!

So you're saying that Ron Paul's supporters are poopy heads?!?!
Posted by: weinerdog43 | December 7, 2007 10:26 PM
I just like the fact that Dr. Paul doesn't have a problem speaking truthfully.

I guess I'd better learn to like border collies!
What I find interesting is that you feel the need to lump anyone who doesn't share your opinion into the category of "sheeple."
Sounds very typically right wing republican to me.
Look support Ron Paul if you like, but don't demean other in the process. Your tactics are unlikely to attract real "wild geese."
Comments like yours will only attract lemmings!

Still at it Dondero? You're a moron.

As a 36 year old, sick of voting for the lesser of 2 evils (voted for Kerry in 04), Ron Paul gets my vote. I was registered independent until the other day, because I believe in Dr. Paul so much. I never thought in a million years I'd be a Republican.

I'm for more war mongering, more spending tax dollars we don't have on more programs we dont need.
More tyranny for all.
--------NOT----------
Ron is for liberty for us.

I spoke with many people about Dr. Paul all of them seem to agree with ideas, they just wonder if he can win. Articles like this show that Dr. Paul's ideals resonate with a very diverse crowd that crosses party lines.

Posted by: Beavis | December 8, 2007 12:51 PM
I have concerns about some of Ron Pauls Idea's, however my freedom comes first. Count me in as being a Ronbot.
Posted by: Norm | December 8, 2007 3:48 PM
It does feel like a wildfire, the cleansing fire of freedom gutting the political/corporate brothel. I like the smoke and rats running.

Wake up America before we all die in our sleep.Cant you see that our government is out of control. Its been taken over by special interest groups. We need too stop trying to run the world when we cant run our own country properly .Our national debt will destroy us .We must stop policeing the world and reduce our federal government. Ron Paul is the only candidate with the vision to save our country . We do have a choice to change our country this election but the fight will be fierce.Government workers are the largest voting block in america.Mainstream media will have to be rattled to cover election fairly. Some people say a vote for Ron Paul is a wasted vote. But i think a vote for any other is a vote to keep us with the same big government control the world policy.Lets bring all of our people home and let the world live their own lives. They would not have anymore reasons to hate us .stop listening to the propaganda that says we should fear them How could any country take over the US

reality said>>>
"If you want to destroy the Federal Government and make the United States a militarily and economically weak group of 50 squabbling non-industrialized nations vote for Ron Paul's 1789 vision of America.
Sorry to burst your bubble folks, but that's what his plans to eliminate the income tax, Federal Reserve and participation in international organizations adds up to.

Reality Check, Me thinks you need to stop watching fox/cnn news...
IRS tax 1040/itemized tax forms are less than 40% revenue to FED GOV. We will save 10X that amount by bringing home our troops from around the world currently manning over 640 bases worldwide!
The federal reserve is anything but Federal GOVERNMENT... It was started by approx. 6 men in 1913...Google federal reserve system
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve
As for the UN being our dictator or the WTO for that matter yes we would be a much stronger nation without them. Besides they are both corrupt (google them too for your reality check, mr.realitycheck...
Trade with other countries is a good thing we currently have "free trade" that means free to all that export to us, not free for us to export to them...Hence why all our industry has relocated overseas and sells back to us tariff free plus they like the 30cents a day wages compared to US wages...I suggest you live up to your name and open your mind while you get a reality check on the documented facts...Our economy is crashing we are 9.3 trillion in debt = over 5 trillion owed to China and Germany over 4 trillion stolen from SS fund...Our founding fathers would be outraged...The gov should fear us not the people fear the gov... Wake up to reality before NAU becomes offical just like they did the EU one more syep to globalization and the end of America and her constitution and liberty ya the things that made us greatest country in the world will no longer be ours!

Ron Paul represents freedom. And he is one of only 6 republicans that voted against the Iraq War bill. That takes guts.
It's about time we get a real leader for a president in this country.
Posted by: Mike | December 8, 2007 11:03 PM
The problem is that everyone else running for the Republican nomination is pro-war, pro-empire, and pro-big government. The people who support Ron Paul are rebelling against that anti-American agenda. If a more moderate candidate came along who advocated a more reasonable foreign policy and a little less government he would surely win.

I've been a Democrat, Republican committeeman, independant, but have always been for LIBERTY.
Give me Ron Paul or give me
Death!

Everyone who says they just want government out of their lives really means they don't want to pay taxes and they hate regulations that hinder their activities even if their activities would be more selfish, venal and self-centered without the regulations. These people who "want big government out of their lives" are also the same people who want to tell everyone else how to live, who to be, what to be and what it's legal to be. They don't like big government because they want to be the big government themselves. They're a bunch of shallow self-interested jerks.

"They don't like big government because they want to be the big government themselves."
... that doesnt make any sense whatsoever.
Anyhow, the counter on RP's website is showing over 10.8 million already. Looks like we will hit 11 even before the tea party!

Add one more Ronbot. I have never voted for a Republican in my life. I switched parties to Vote for Dr. Paul I don't need the Patriot Act. I just need the Bill of Rights.

Hey everyone, check out this site for a Times Square Ad to coincide with the 16 Dec Tea Party Money Bomb. The cutoff is the 12th (I know, not much time), but they only need $50,000.
Great advertising scheme that would reach lots of people.
