By Jim Tankersley
WASHINGTON – Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) called a news conference this morning to pitch her economic stimulus plans in light of another dizzying day of losses in global stock exchanges. But the reporters who turned out were more interested in rehashing last night’s sharp-toned Democratic presidential debate, and Clinton was happy to oblige.
Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama fenced for much of that debate over policy and personal backgrounds. While rival John Edwards largely stood on the sidelines, Obama accused Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, of lying about his record – and slammed Hillary Clinton for once sitting on the Wal-Mart board of directors.
Hillary Clinton responded by questioning whether Obama’s actions match his words – a criticism she repeated throughout this morning’s press conference – and accusing him of having done legal work for a “slumlord,” Tony Rezko.
This morning, Clinton said Obama “clearly came (to the debate) last night looking for a fight.”
“What we saw last night was that he’s very frustrated – Sen. Obama’s very frustrated,” she said. “The events of the last 10 days, particularly the outcomes in New Hampshire and Nevada, have apparently convinced him to adopt a new strategy.”
A moment later, she continued: “I believe that words matter, but I think actions matter more. And time and time again (with Obama), we see where words and actions don’t match… He has a hard time responding to questions about his record.”
Asked if she was somehow belittling Obama with “code words” meant to degrade his race, Clinton was emphatic: “I just don’t believe that,” she said. “I’ve been very complimentary of him … We are two people vying for the most important job in the world. And it’s important that we air whatever differences we have in a respectful, civil way.”
Clinton repeatedly brushed off reporters who asked if her husband – in his position as a former president - was somehow crossing a party line with his recent critiques of Obama.
Asked about the fairness of her own “slumlord” criticism of Obama last night, she answered “you’ll have to ask (Obama) about that,” though she allowed that the “record supports” her characterization of Rezko as a “slumlord.”
Obama has or plans to return more than $80,000 in political contributions linked to Rezko, a politically connected Chicago businessman who has pleaded not guilty to federal influence-peddling and bank fraud charges. He said at last night’s debate that his legal work for Rezko firm was limited and tangential.
Clinton is now headed to California. Obama campaigns today in South Carolina.
For the record, Clinton warned that a recession was "inevitable" and said she worried it could be deep and long. Her economic proposals included:
* Asking the president to convene a working group on financial markets.
* Urging Washington leaders meeting today on a stimulus package to settle on something that Congress will pass quickly.
* Reiterating her calls for a 30-day moratorium on home foreclosures and a five-year lending rate freeze.

Comments
Perhaps Mrs. Clinton will be asked about her husband's $20 million payout from a company owned by the government of Dubai. See today's story at

hillary's ONE AND ONLY true agenda:
MY HUBBY IS GOLLUM AND GOLLUM WANTS HIS "PRECIOUS" POWER BACK - GIVE HIM BACK HIS "PRECIOUS" !!!!! GIVE US BACK OUR "PRECIOUS"
what america needs to do in order to have ANY hope of getting back on track is to take the ring away from the nepotistic, dynastic, power mad, obsessive, money grubbing, lying, corrupted, do and say anything to get elected clintons
cut the ring from their damned finger -- even if you have to cut the finger off
let's do this and get it over with so america can move on
a vote for hillary is a hate-crime against your own country

Hillary's comments today were SOOO condescending. It's about time Obama defended himself. It's unfortunate that Obama has had to run against and defend himself against a former president. Bill Clinton was a disgrace in the whithouse, and he's a disgrace in his wife's campaign.
The Clintons are tearing apart the democratic party, and if she wins the nomination, the country will be next.
Talk about divisive and polarizing....

idk i think that hillary clinton should win.because she has exierience and she knows what is really about to come on the road up ahead.

Hillary should not throw too many stones they are going to boomarang what about one of her fundraiser person in New York just indicted for defauding people of some what 40 million dollars. Or have we forgotten that.

I think part of the economic problem is banks loosing lots of money on subprime (bad credit) mortgages. How does Hilary's proposed 30 day moratorium on house foreclosures help that? It makes the financial situation for banks even worse. Then maybe the banks fail and we have an even worse problem.
Posted by: Reality | January 22, 2008 12:29 PM
I think that if Obama was frustrated, Clinton was outraged. She spoke up ot of turn and her vocabulary and mannerisms reminded me of someone runnign for class president. She will do anything to become president and is having a hard time finding something wrong with Obama. She tries to play the sympathy card with African-Americans, but in the end seems to be belittling them by repeating that they are poor, uneducated, and need help. The American public can judge Obama's comments on their own; we do not need her to twist his words and interpret them for us.

I don't like Hillary but I'm glad that some national figure has finally noticed the "change" that Obama has brought to Illinois.

Bill and Hillary Clinton are both a joke! Obama spanked her good in that debate last night! I'm glad Obama is fighting them back! Who's running for President anyway. Bill or Hillary? If it's Hillary I can't tell! The fact is The Clinton's and Bush's have run this Country since the 1980's. Look at the mess this Country is in! Enough of the Clinton's and Bush's already!

Obama keep your head high. If it was you were came out looking for a fight Hillary the next day would say that the men are picking on the lady again. What a fake she and her husband are.
I can tell you right now, I am a Republican and will vote for Obama if he is on the ticket to be President. I think he is the right person for the job. We do not need another president who will keep this country divided. Hillary will do that. If she is the Democratic canidate I will vote Republican no matter what. I am sure there are many people who feel the same.

funny how she was not calling for a financial area conference at the end of Bill's presidency when the economy was going into a tailspin and he insisted that it took two successive quarters of downturn to be called a recession.
Similar to his defence to "I did not have sex with her, Ms Lewinsky".
and now he wants to get back to the White House. do you suppose he remembered something that his staff did not cart off as they left the building?

I was viewing the date last night with unbias eyes. Re-roll the tapes and you will see that Obama was the first to start slinging mud! Did you not notice the even John Edwards was defending Hillary, saying that Obama was not on track with true democratic beliefs? Seriously people, get educated or don't vote. Obama is more power hungry than any candidate. He wants a job that he is NOT qualified for! Any republican candidate will beat him to a pulp. At least John and Hillary stand up for their beliefs, admit their mistakes, and make action plans to fix out problems.
Barak just dances around the issues, makes excuses for his actions and has no clear plan about any economic or social issue. Who does that remind you of? Oh yeah, George Bush. Let's just elect an unqualifies candidate because he can give a good speech. Are the american people really that ignorant?

wow, she'll recommend to bush that he form a "working group"? that's the weakest proposal i've read in terms of dealing with this likely recession. not very reassuring!

Obama started the fight and Clinton responded in kind. It was about time. Obama looked like a bully and was not prepared to take even legitimate criticism of his record. He has not demonstrated any skills needed to be the President of the United States.
Posted by: sk | January 22, 2008 12:58 PM
Obama made one statement out of frustration related to the Clinton's distortion of the facts. The Clinton's should be careful of what they say; last I check, the US government spent millions of dollars investigating a real estate deal involving the Clintons. Right or wrong, it happened and their hands are not clean. Obama's style is not to personally attack; he shows class. He could and I am sure he is sitting on plenty of material. If all she has is Resko(sp?) and no one knows exactly what went on ( I choose to believe his statement from last night), then I think karma will come back around to her and her husband. If she is the next president; she will be too much of a divisive figure and will continue to set the Dems back. I wish someone in the leadership will remind her of that.
Posted by: Philip | January 22, 2008 12:59 PM
How soon the Clinton's, yes both of them forget. Obama's name has not been mentioned in the same breath as has the Clinton's: Whitewater; Lewinsky; travelgate; healthcare fiasco, Vince Foster, Hsu, etc. I wish Bill Clinton would shut up already. If your wife were so up to the challenge, she would be able to fight her own battles. I used to have a lot of respect for you, even with all of your shortcomings, namely the problem keeping your pants up higher than your ankles, but also you are a liar, deceiver, manupulator, and you've have tarnished the Office of the President of the United States. I have a tad bit more respect for your wife, but she is not the person for the job either. She is cold, calulating, a liar and will say anything to get elected. We don't need another person of the Clinton's ilk in the Oval Office (her included). You are not very nice people, and neither of you have any integrity. It's like you two think the Presidency is yours for the taking. We need a breath of fresh air in this job. Bill if you were any kind of a man, you would sit down and shut up for once. About the only Clinton that has any class is Chelsea, and we can only speculate where she got it from. I truly hope that the Clinton's will not destroy what's left of the Democratic Party, because I can sense, if your negative, dirty politics happen to win out and result in your nomination, many will either cross-over, or not participate in this election. But seeing as you two are so self-serving you would destroy this party before placing it above yourselves. Obama is the right person at the right time.

I really wonder how a moratorium on foreclosures and lending rate freeze is going to help the economy. So the banks have no way to compete and their assets have been taken away from them. Does she have any understanding of the financial markets? Maybe she got the experience when she was having tea with Margaret Thatcher.

Maybe someone should ask Her Thighness why? The GDP is not declining (3Q and 4Q 2007 GDP increased quarter to quarter) and unemployment is still low (5% unemeployment is considered full employment)
Why does she consider a recession inevitable? Market corrections are inevitable.
If she's elected, she'll claim "credit" for a non-event pretty quickly.

I still don't understand what Obama stands for. He spins change but what change. Just claiming you can bring everyone together is just a tatic.
He doesn't vote on important issues and should be critized for that. He attacks others about voting when he does not.
Edwards and Clinton at least explain what they will do.

Sen. Hillary Clinton impresses me more every time I see her. Her intelligence, experience, grasp of domestic and international issues and political skills are second to none. She will make a GREAT President. The bonus for the U.S. and world (where Hillary and Bill Clinton are respected, beloved and MISSED) is that Bill Clinton will be by her side.
Sen.Obama is simply not ready for prime time. He's had a free pass from the media. Why? He continues to interject race into this campaign, just last night speaking of creating a "Department of Racial Justice? This is a political loser. What is the real story about his relationship with Rezko in Chicago, who's about to go to trial? What is the real story about his relationship with his "pastor" in Chicago who's accused of anti-white racism? What is the real story of his background? Who is the real Barack Hussein Obama? He answers nothing, no substance. He's clearly out of his league in a debate with Clinton and Edwards.
Just because he went to Harvard (remember George W. Bush went to Yale...) means very little.

One sided article. Suddenly the writers at the Swamp want to talk more about Clinton, and the article becomes one sided. You have to understand the Obama camp is trying to go through their options, to make their next move. After that, you will have lots of Obama "two-sided" material.
The Obamafiles get upset when they can't piggy back off a good point about Obama in an footnote (or each others comments). Let me help you- rationalize Obama returning the 80, 000 from Rezko, you know that "Obama link to Rezko was invented" part of that never ending Hillary tired to smear Obama conspiracy. I believe The Swamp dropped you the next line. "He's returning the money, his work for Rezko was minimal." Just add the usual, "He is God," try to do so without the name Hillary, that might lead us to nowhere again.

I am pleased that Obama decided it was time to let go of the "Mr. Nice Guy" in reference to both of the Clintons. They have shown that there is no places they will not go to win--Not withstanding that there is no-way Hillary would be in a position to have been chosen to run had she not been the wife of Bill Clinton.
Those of you who could only half-like Obama when he allowed, Bill and Hillary to be abusive to him, but do not like him at all now, really show "who" you are.
The summer of 2007, my son and one of his friends , both graduates from the University Notre Dame , played football at Notre Dame & played in the NFL. My son played in the NFL for 9 years. They are both about 6 feet, 4 inches tall, and weight over 200 pounds.
They are both intelligent looking million dollar men, wearing jeans and nice shirts walking down the street in "South Loop", Chicago. As they are approaching a group of young white males and females standing around at an outdoor cafe in "South Loop", they noticed them touching their pockets preparing as if they were going to be robbed etc.
My son said that he has found himself speaking more softly depending on the crowd, because a Black man can inject a strange fear, just speaking in a strong normal voice.
So I am sad, but not surprised by the negative reactions to Obama's speaking up.
What sort of President would he be if he just played "Mr. nice guy" all of the time.
I want Obama to win, because I know he is what the U S needs to re build America's credibility. Yet on the the other hand, when I read some of the hate mail, I think , Maybe America deserves exactly what we will get from Hillary as U S president, more hate toward Americans, because of our arrogant and bully ways.
What is happening now to our economy etc. and as a result of the war we started, I stated in a letter to the Chicago Sun Times three days after 9/11, because we did not have "The Swamp" back then. The Sun Times did not print it of course.
So I am supporting Obama to the best of my ability, but there is a part of me that see the Hell he will be walking into when he wins, not because it has to be that way, but because of the number of Americans, even in powerful places, who would rather see America go to hell than for an "Obama" to win, and actually correct a lot of what needs to be corrected, not just in the U S , but the world.
My daughter wrote a satire when she was a junior in high school, titled "Why Not a Black man for U S President" She graduated from Dartmouth College and the University Notre Dame Law school, that shows how long ago that was.
Now that Obama is a reality, I am amazed at how much wisdom was in that satire written by a 16 year old so many years ago-it appears the more some things change, the more the some things stay the same...

Two Things:
1. Re the debate on CCN last night -- Is it my imagination or was Obama given more speaking time than Hillary or John. It seems to me that everytime Hillary wanted to make a point she kept being interrupted by Wolf Blitzer, yet when Obama spoke Wolf gave him "free rein" and just let him go on and on and on... Is CNN showing its bias so soon in the campaign.
2. If Obama is the nominee, I will be voting Republican for the first time in my life!!! Obama is NOT qualified to lead this great nation. His record while an Illinois Senator shows that anytime there was a controversial issue up for a vote -- his vote was "present" (will that be his response when there is crucial national issue that needs resolution?)-- and what about the "dream mansion" real estate deal that Rezko was able to faciliate for Obama (and where is Rezko now???) -- no one does a "favor" w/o expecting something in return. What did Rezko expect in return??? hmmm.. just wondering...

GOOD FIND PEEL!! (see comment above)
The wall street article you linked leads me to believe that the Clintons are defenitely part of the problem, not the solution. This part is especially interesting.
Questions raised about the activities of sovereign wealth funds -- giant pools of money controlled by foreign governments -- have become a campaign issue, as the funds have made a spate of multibillion-dollar investments in such corporate giants as Citigroup Inc. and Merrill Lynch & Co. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mrs. Clinton said such purchases are "a source of concern," partly because the foreign funds "lack transparency" and could be used by foreign governments as "instruments of foreign policy."
So, as long as she can keep us argueing over what Hillary said and what Barack said, the less we concentrate on the economic problem we are in (that Bill and Hillary, according to this Wall Street article, were part of)and practical solutions to get us out of this mess.
Race, he said, she said, its all a smoke screen.

concur with lema - clintons are very desperate !!!! obama has more endorsements and delegates than chillary and gollum clinton anticipated at this stage and clintons are clearly panicking thus these attacks - obama is neither desperate NOR panicky like the clintons are - obama is just tired of this BS from clintons being clintons
republicans know it, too - they would much rather run against this obviously threatened and panicky hillary than run against obama
clintons are in dilemma - without their distortions and personal attacks campaigning, they cannot win nomination - but with it, they make BOTH candidates less likely to win in november
obama is democrat's ONLY hope and would clearly be a much better president than chillary and gollum clinton

There is so much dirt on the Clintons floating around out there, I cant believe they are betting on Americans to forget about all their scandal, baggage and issues.
OBAMA is the FUTURE of the DNC! He wants open, transparent government, involving the people, working together across party lines and uniting the country.
HRC will not be able to accomplish this, she cant even get through an election without lying, distorting, dividing her own party, etc.
Peace out HRC and BC...time to retire!

She wasn't thinking any more about a stimulus package than she's been thinking about traveling to the moon on HellForce One. No, she couldn't sleep all night because Obama drove her crazy at that debate last night, so why she called a press conference was so that she could throw jabs at Obama for last night, so she could be the first one out this morning attacking Obama. She knew the press would turn to that, that was her reason for calling them, and she did what she wanted by masquerading this so-called stimulus package. She is such a loser, it's a pity. She has nothing behind the frame and she keeps going in spite of it, duping the American people, while her husband goes to black churches and falls asleep, snoring his legacy away...

This is exactly right. Obama is a complete fraud. I grew up in the district he represented as State Senator and attended one of the venerable African-American churches there. We had no idea who he was until he made a run for his current senate seat. He's another rich African-American doing things at the expense of poor African-Americans who could get into power and make a difference for ALL Americans of meager and middle-class means.
He's as much of a fraud as Professor Michelle Goodwin at DePaul who used to lie about growing up in inner city Milwaukee when she grew up in Whitefish Bay, an upper middle class suburb.

So Hillary thinks Obama is frustrated because he had to raise his voice when she frequently interrupted and talked over his answers? What is frustrating to most rank and file Democrats is this idea that the Clintons can go anywhere and do anything they want and yet you are somehow frustrated, unhinged, or going after her gender if you take them on in any way.

Focusing on the candidates extra-curricular bantoring only detracts from the issues at hand. The press has an obligation to report responsibly on what matters so Americans can choose their candidate based on a solid, workable plan to address the issues. Candidates: I've only heard rhetoric so far,...no concrete plans from anyone. Be fair AND HONEST with the American people. All of you need to admit that whoever becomes President will have to deal with partisan politics and make concessions. It will not be a cake-walk simply because someone is telling us it will be so. The Republicans aren't going to hand over everything the next President asks for without deals being made. Americans/ specifically Democrats, that believe that it won't be 'politics as usual' are naive and put this struggling country in jeopardy of having 4 more years of what we already have.

Hillary and Barack need to start realizing that their fighting comes across as childish and immature and is only hurting themselves. Al Gore and John Kerry couldn't beat Bush despite 8 good economic years under Clinton and in Irag war disaster under Bush. Hilary and Barack need to stop bickering if we want to end this Irag war. I have been on the fence for a long time on who to vote for but after last night I have decided to vote for John Edwards on Super Tuesday. He is the only mature one up there.

We are watching gutter politics from the Clintons who are absolutely depending upon voters who cannot or do not learn the truth. This article is heavy on Clinton's twist of facts and totally missing the real facts.
Someone in the media please study Hillary Clinton's Senatorial record.......she was primariloy doing name-recognition legislation. Nearly 8 out of 10 of her sponsored legislation bills which became law were re-naming post offices or doing resolutions to honor individuals. That paltry record should alert people that her own ego wants to be named president. Clinton is the one who has not been vetted, but gets away with simply lying about her experience.
In comparisonl, Obama, in shorter years in the Senate, has devoted his successful legislation to critical issues of national importance such as transparency in government, assuring our country's safety from loose nuclear and other weapons, and government ethics reform.

Obama should start calling Bill Clinton Hillarie's running mate, don't mention him by name, say "well, your running mate said this and your running mate said that", put her on the defensive about his role in her campaign.
Posted by: Timmy | January 22, 2008 1:41 PM
Hmmm...where do I begin. The constitution states the qualifications of the president does it not? 8 years living in the White House is experience? It seems as though Hillary is the frustrated one. Instead of sticking to the issues, she and her husband mount vicious and inaccurate attack against Obama. Is that presidential material? Barack needs to lay out is plan, even though it is on his website, people need to see something visual or hear it on television. That is how Americans are, often times mis-informed because the believe everthing they hear. But I have confidence we will make better decisions so that we will not have the devisiveness in politics since 1980..reagan, bush, bush, clinton, clinton, bush, bush...clinton?????? Is this how we want our history books to read?...Obama/Edwards vs Romney/Paul would be good choices in November. This would be what most American can identify clear difference in the future
Posted by: rere | January 22, 2008 1:43 PM
Barach Obama made a statement that he has been in the streets working for the individuals who are lossing their jobs to outsourcing. This is completely untrue. Barack Obama has had his own interests at the forefront of all of his politcal moves. We should not elect a person who has no experience in public policy, national security or otherwise. I admit, Barack has a great smile and I would love to see an african american president in office. But those are not reasons to case a vote. Also, we should define african american. Until I see a American black of slave decendant run for president and have the amount of success in the polls I will be excited. How possibly could Barack understand oppression if he has had a silver spoon in his mouth and doesn't understand the disparities that black americans suffer. Stop playing the race card Obama! We both now you have absolutely nothing to contribute to the black community. If you did, you would be doing so right now in the inner city streets of Chicago. The same streets that you avoid when you are intown...There. how do you like them apples.

Enough of the dynasties in this country: Bush I & II, Clinton I & II, Daley I & II. We need new talent: Obama!
Posted by: Al Smith | January 22, 2008 1:46 PM
I wonder if OBAM would be returning the $80,000 if all the dirt about his connection with Rezko hadn't come to light. Tom your comment sounds like a school girl getting back at an old boyfriend. Doesn't make sense.
Posted by: Rhonda R | January 22, 2008 1:47 PM
How is Hillary Clinton qualified or experienced?
Are you referring to her time working on the board of Wal-Mart, campaigning for Barry Goldwater, or her eight years as first lady--in which time she miserably failed at her one attempt to pass major legislation, helped to divide America, and helped to put the Republican Party in power for the next decade? Is that the kind of experience that we need?
Posted by: Rachel | January 22, 2008 1:48 PM
After watching that debate last night it looked to me like John Edwards was running for Vice president under Hillary. Can anyone imagine Hillary Clinton being challenged by another country's leader? I do not think she would be well receieved by foreign leaders at all. And it's true that our country has been run by Clinton and Bush..it is time for a "fresh" family with a more realistic way of life to get in the White House and at least try to change what has gone awry for so long. I also believe that Barack is almost an "everyman" worldwide. Much easier to relate to, and what I think would lead to better world relations.
Posted by: Shelley | January 22, 2008 1:49 PM
Answer to Lady, YES, they are. However, think of what the republicans will do to OBAM and his background with Rezko, and his 152 pass votes. Even Edwards questioned him on that one.

The problem is the media, turning molehill news into mountain breaking news for better ratings. If the media cared about us Americans, they would fact check AND fact report.
Some of you need to read transcripts and biographies of these candidates before you cast your vote or offer your opinions.
Posted by: Tre | January 22, 2008 1:53 PM
People that vote for Hillary are voting for a continuation of the same old stuff that has been going on in Washington for the last 20 years. Hillary is DEEP into Washington's Old Movers and Shakers. This was acquired through her own political aspirations and her days as Bill's wife (all that experience she's gotten by being the First Lady, give me a break). America needs to understand that nothing is going to get done if Hillary is elected President and the reason is simple. In order to get anything done in Washington it is going to take Democrats, Republicans and Independents working together. They will not WORK with Hillary because they do not like Bill and Hillary and will not agree on any plans by Hillary to move this country forward. So there you go, same OLD STUFF!!!! Senator Obama is the true answer for change and the only way to move this coutry forward and in a better direction. President Obama would greatly improve our standing in the World and greatly improve America.

"idk i think that hillary clinton should win.because she has exierience and she knows what is really about to come on the road up ahead."
Really? Please tell me about the experience she has that makes her qualified for the job? Being first lady for 8 years doesn't cut it. She was appointed a high level position in the Bill Clinton campaign to rollout their healthcare plan in '92. 16 years later, nothing has changed. So she failed once before, why would we give her another chance to fail? As for her economic plans, what a joke. Mortgage loans are a huge reason for today's financial woes. And she wants to exacerbate it by a 30 day extension on foreclosures? She needs to be quiet and let the Fed do their job. That said, I don't much care for Obama or Edwards and don't think they are very qualifed either. I'm just annoyed by Hillary's campaign.

Keep fighting for Obama to get in.
With his experience (or lack thereof) that's a surefire way to get McCain into office. He'll chew him up and spit him out...

I see you put her down, and then tell us about how you hate negative politics. I've got a hunch it will rain tomorrow.... Now we are desperate and voting for Obama based on hunches. somehow I always knew hope and change was nothing more than another way to say I have a Hunch!--but with more credibility.

"I do not think she would be well received by foreign leaders at all."

Here we go again! what's the word "experience"?
We need to start with a person who has good moral standards, high ethical standards, good family background and a true belief in what should be the "right way" for this great country to perform!
Lets stop the pandering, name calling and "one minute solutions" to deep complex problems that our nation is facing! Economy issues, security issues, immigration issues and quality life for our citizens! VOTE FOR THAT PERSON!

The way Sen Obama tried to spin his involvement with Rezko was disgusting. He didn't just do 5 hours of work on his projects he had been friends with him for years, he wrote letters of support on his behalf to city hall, Rezko contributed thousands to his campaign and helped raise millions for him. Sen Obama appointed Rezko to serve on his U.S. Senate campaign finance committee, Rezko helped him buy a house.
How he gets away with such duplicity is beyond me.

Why in the world would Hillary Clinton bring up the Rezko "scandal"? It's like making a mountain out of a mole hill. It's crazy. Doesn't anybody realize that the Clinton's have mastered the art of deflection? Perhaps the so forgiving American population that thinks the Clinton's hung the moon need to be seated in front of their television sets and not be able to move while the entire "Whitewater hearings" and the non stop coverage of his affair dominated the tv waves for MUCH of his presidency. I for one remember that time and also remember thinking how embarrassed I was that he was our President and that she was an absolute moron for standing by his side..although now I can clearly see she had a plan. What better revenge than to make him hold her skirt through a campaign. They sicken me.

Folks--wake up
all of you who believe voting for Hillary will put Bill back in the white house is slow... both of them are cutthroat and will do anything to accomplish their goals Wake Up America Bill was clearly not the best president (especially for blacks) His welfare reform caused many a sleepless night for single moms -black and white-I could go on and on but you get my drift.

Obama is a weasel. All I hear from him time and time again is an excuse for every thing he has done. He does not take responsibility for his actions, instead he has some story made up for everything. Just tell the truth!
Posted by: Al | January 22, 2008 2:33 PM
Yes,Obama has spent time is the Roseland community and DCP (a grassroots organization which is struggling if not failing to merely survive), but the operative question is whether or not he left either one in better shape? I would say no on both fronts. Obama is a drive-by activist; which I characterize as a person who uses the misery of others for political or financial benefit. Clearly, his position is feuled by his ambition. That isn't a bad thing, but I think in the end ambition is what best defines him and not a record of assisting those of us who are in dire need of relevant and sustainable change.

In response to "Lady," get off your high horse! I'd rather have no plan at all than one that won't work. Hilary is throwing crap at the wall. Let's freeze bank rates...what a great plan. White or Black; female or male, assuming it is Obama or Clinton in the White House, as I suspect it will be, the true ugliness will come out. Obama is already "playing" the "race card" and Hillary is a Bi***, etc . . ., Damn, haven't we gotten past all of this? Most people are truly ignorant to whatever the truth is and only listen to what they want to hear. This country will never regain the respect of the world if we cannot show respect for others. I despise George Bush, but I show him respect because he is the President. While it is true that we can and should be able to voice our own opinion, I think hiding behind email for personal attacks is cowardly. Read Obama's books; Read the Clinton books and the Starr Report. I have, and I am able to form an opinion based on intelligence not on false and/or less than intelligent acts of name calling.

According to CNN Election Center 2008, 2,025 delegates will be needed to win the Democratic nomination for president at the Democratic National Convention to be held in Denver August 25-28. Current pledged delegate totals before the South Carolina Democratic primary election Saturday January 26 are: Obama 38, Clinton 36, and Edwards 18.
Florida will be meaningless to Democrats because like Michigan all Democratic delegates have been declared illegal by the national committee because of the state party’s non compliance in setting their primary date no sooner than Super Tuesday February 5.
Should Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton Become the Democratic Party’s Nominee for President in 2008?
Which candidate is best able to inspire Americans with a new vision of a better America both domestically and in foreign affairs that will attract sufficient independent voters and disenchanted Republicans so that Democrats can win the general election in November?
Which candidate is least likely to cause a worsening division and polarization of voters and elected officials that maintains the partisan politics that currently paralyzes Washington?
Which candidate refuses campaign contributions from lobbyists and political action committees as a first step in seeking to change the money dominated special interest politics that currently rules Washington?
Which candidate has had the personal background and life experiences and possesses the vision and ability necessary to bring together Americans of all ethnic backgrounds be they white, Latino, Asian, African American, or native American in a sense of common purpose?
Which candidate do Americans most respect and admire given the facts of his or her personal family background, marriage relationship, intelligence and academic achievement, and the particular path by which he or she has become a candidate for president of the United States?
Which candidate does not have a spouse whose past political experience and personal behavior could prove to be a serious distraction that might needlessly complicate the office and duties of the President and potentially interfere with the normal functioning of cabinet officers?
Which candidate will the American people be able to trust when times are tough because he or she consistently values telling the truth, rather than choosing his or her words primarily with regard to the politics of the moment?
The inescapable answer is Barack Obama.

Just who is runnig for President, Bill or Hillary. I am a woman and what I see is that Hillary cannot do it alone. We don't need Hillary as President and Bill will be the Vice President and the person elected to be VP will be on the sidelines. Wake up America can't you see what is happening here. Hillary is not ready to run this country.
Posted by: Jean | January 22, 2008 3:23 PM
If you paid attention to what Obama said last night you would have noted that voting "present" on 152 votes (out of his 4,000 vote history) were strategic moves involving bi-partisan alliances within the Illinois legislature.
Frequently, sound judgment requires more facts.

Posting your comments about either candidate's performance here isn't the end. Visit the candidates' websites and post your comments on their performance, their views, etc., directly to the candidate via their staff. Want to change politics? Want to have the best government? It starts with us, the voting public, to let the candidates who wish to represent US how we view their performances. Stop bitching here. Write the candidates a professional email with comments, critiques, suggestions and then VOTE.

Obama keep your head. I loved Bill Clinton but he is not running for office. Hilary is a respect politician with many accomplishments but it is time for a change. The world would welcome a change and Obama would be welcome to peace talks around the world because he is not tarnished by the politics game. He is for the people and he is the most intelligent of the candidates running. This country is in bad shape and in fairness will take four years to turn around the finances and the feelings of hatred throuout the world.

I'm so tired of Hillary. She's so hypocritical. She thinks she has all the answers.
That woman is a witch. I can see why Bill decided to go for Lewinski, who wants to wake up everyday looking at that face.
She's the witch from the west. Obama will win because he's real. And Clinton needs to sit his ass down. Who's goong to believe what he says since he lied about having sex with Lewinski until he was cornered. I'm tired of both

TAKE IT FROM A CHICAGO NATIVE Retzko is a non issue. it's not all over the Trib because there ia nothing else to report.
The "anti white" pastor is nothing of the sort. He is a strong advocate for black people to be responsible independent people and not wait for someone to give them something. He is not anti white he just doesn't worry about them. They can take care of themselves.
Obama is about as far from a part of the Chicago Machine as you can be, and Tthe Chicago machine is far from what it was anyway .
And talk about code words Anyone who feels it necessary to use Obamas middle name, which is yes Hussein, is just showing how bias and frankly ignorant of anything beyond our own borders they are. The name, like Mohammed, is as common as John or James in a huge part of the world.
Just because someone is named Al does that make him Capone?
And yes, I have been an Obama supporter since he was a state senator. I always knew he was destin for bigger things and am delighted that he's where he is so soon. We need a smart, rational, person who thinks and gathers facts, not partisan opinions, before he makes a decision.
The very fact that he han't been in Politics too long makes him even more appealing to me, less time to become beholding to the system and others.
And how do you get experience for the jobof President anyway? Every guy has done it differently, and it's different depending on what's going on at the time.
Smarts and the ability to lead and earn the trust of the people is what's needed and Obama has it, big time.
Posted by: Quercus | January 22, 2008 3:51 PM
No politician's hands are totally clean, but consider the weight of Tony Rezko v. the weight of Whitewater? Poor decision v. wanton manipulation and scheming anyone?
The more I see of Senator Clinton, the more I'm disgusted. From her constant, misleading talk of experience (she held no elected office until she carpet bagged her way into the Senate via NY in 2000) to her condescending demeanor when talking to or about black folks and civil rights, the senator shows little of the integrity that one would hope for in a President.
Let's also remember that while some bring up race when discussing Obama's electability in a general election, Hilary Clinton is the candidate that has many Republican strategists salivating. The intense dislike -- some would say hatred -- amongst the Republican base as well as many independent voters plays greatly in the favor of John McCain, Mike Huckabee (who actually impressed me with his visit to Ebenezer on MLK Day), and (gasp!) Mitt Romney.

All of you who were swayed by Hillary and Edwards attacking Obama about his voting "present" need to read the Newsweek article with Hillary on the cover. There were strategic reasons for such a vote in the IL legislature. The article supports what Obama has been saying all along he's a bridge builder. Hillary is polarizing.
I attend the same church as Obama and I have attended Trinity United Church of Christ since 1978. Rev. Wright is NOT anti-white. People take a few of his comments and associate it with Obama. All of us know or associate with someone who we don't necessarily agree with it.
I say all of this to ask people to do their research before posting utter nonsense on the web. No one should be elected President who does not represent all of the people. Obama does not have to be poor and uneducated to represent black people. I am a middle class black woman who graduated from the Univ of IL in Urbana and Northwestern.
Please do some more research people. You let some well timed comments sway you.
