Clearly anxious to generate more attention for the Florida primary despite Democratic party sanctions stripping the state of its delegates, Hillary Clinton announced today that she would go to Florida on primary night to thank her supporters there.
All the major Democratic candidates promised not to campaign in Florida to avoid a backlash in the crucial party-sanctioned early primaries and caucuses in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. Florida violated party rules by moving its primary ahead of Feb. 5.
Clinton said on CBS's Face the Nation this morning that she would be in Florida "Tuesday night" when the results are counted for the state's primary. This afternoon, her campaign put out put out a statement explaining that she would time her visit to avoid breaking her pledge against campaigning there.
Clinton "will visit the state after all polls are closed in the Florida primary, in accordance with her pledge not to campaign in the state before its primary," the campaign said in its statement.
A Clinton appearance at a campaign party in-state would provide video that draws more attention to the results in Florida. And since she is expected to win, a victory in speech in Florida clearly would provide better momentum for the campaign leading up to the Super Tuesday Feb. 5 primary than her 2-to-1 loss in South Carolina.
Polls have shown Clinton leading in Florida throughout the campaign. And none of the major Democratic candidates have campaigned in the state.

Comments
If all the Dem candidates are still honoring their pledge not to campaign here, why are Obama ads running on CNN being broadcast in Florida? They don't say anything about Florida issues, of course, like his intent to delay the NASA moon-Mars program (which will not only affect jobs in Florida but elsewhere in the US, not to mention our international leadership in space research). But, nonetheless, the Obama campaign has not instructed CNN to remove those ads.

WE NEED A NEW AMERICA AND A PRESIDENT THAT UNDERSTANDS THE DIVERSITY OF THIS NATION BY UNDERSTANDING THE UNIQUENESS OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE UNITED STATES. A CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT CAN NOT PUT AT RISK THE SECURITY OF THE US LIKE OBAMA DOES WITH HIS RADICAL RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND/BELIEFS. HILLARY CLINTON IS THE WOMAN THAT WILL TURN OVER THE UNITED STATES LIKE NEVER SEEN BEFORE TO A NATION OF EQUALITY, DIVERSITY, AND TRUE DEMOCRACY. HILLARSY FOR PRESIDENT IS THE ONLY RATIONAL CHOICE!

Just watch as the Clinton sleaze machine goes into overdrive attempting to change the rules at the last minute so that Hillary can win. While there are lots of good reasons to discuss the status of Florida's and Michigan's delegates at the Democratic convention, that discussion take place after the primaries, and Hillary Clinton's reasons for bringing it up now are sickeningly obvious. While she has pledged not to campaign in Florida, she is in fact campaigning in Florida. As she has surely calculated, any on the eve of the Florida primary who oppose her would appear to be opposing Florida's right to participate in the nomination process. A short-term win for Clinton, perhaps, but one that in the long term may be of little benefit to a campaign that is looking dirtier by the day.

That's just a smart move on her part, and would help make up for the lack of opportunity to campaign there. It never made sense to me that the democrats in Florida decided to sabotage their part in the election in such a way. They wanted to be first, but they ended up being last as a result of their collective egos.
Posted by: Beth | January 27, 2008 5:38 PM
Just like she "won" Michigan, right? Hillary couldn't play by the rules for anything - and she'll end up losing the nomination because of it.
Posted by: Bill, Chicago, IL | January 27, 2008 5:44 PM
I don't know what the DNC was thinking when they decided to strip Michigan, and especially Florida of their delegates. Florida is a swing state -- whoever wins the Democratic nomination will now be at a huge disadvantage because he/she was not allowed to campaign there.

I thought Clinton was tacky enough not to gracefully conceed in South Carolina but now she's going to declare vicotry in the non-event Florida primary?
This woman gets more embarassing and graceless by the day.

So Hillary's going to Florida. The real question is, "Is she taking Humpty Dumpty" with her? All Bill needs is Ronald McDonald's over-sized shoes and red wig and he'd be a bigger clown than he already is.

As a 22 year-old African-American I cannot wait until my Caucasian & Latino friends get to vote on Feb. 5th. It’s no secret that people like to support people who look like them but this is ridiculous. This man has no experience--would you let a 3rd-year med student do open-heart surgery on you…NO. This means political war and I have distanced myself from some of my family who blindly support Obama because he is black. My city (Memphis) does the same thing—I guess some people love mayors that do nothing as a city declines, but my Mom & Dad got a clue and moved to the county, outside of city limits. I am currently in grad school and I want all you Obama supporters to email me at bhubbar@yahoo.com after Feb. 5 so I can gloat.

Minerva, the CNN and MSNBC ads have been brought up elsewhere. CNN and MSNBC don't allow deletions of specific states from national ads.
Posted by: KPO'M | January 27, 2008 6:26 PM
It's Obama that didn't concede in Nevada. Hillary called Obama last night. Unlike Obama who pouted in Nevada. Florida might not have delegates but it's a huge state with a diverse population and will demonstrate numbers that will more closely match the nation--unlike south carolina

The important thing to watch in the Florida is the ANTI HILLARY vote. This seems to be pretty strong everywhere.
Posted by: mike | January 27, 2008 6:33 PM
As a 29yr old Latino male, I will be voting for Hillary come Tuesday in Florida.
It is disgusting that the DNC chooses to take away the significance of my vote and other registered democrats. Instead, they choose to give more weight to states with huge latino/black and white populations with overall small populations. Florida is the first true representation of a national election due to the diversity we have here in race, gender, social background, transplants, etc.
Posted by: David in FL | January 27, 2008 6:46 PM
Obama already broke the pledge by running ads in Florida. If Hillary wants to go to Florida to thank her supporters after the vote, I don't see a problem with that. If she can win Florida in the general election, that would be great. Obama probably made a lot of Floridians mad when he said their votes don't count. What was he thinking?
Posted by: goldenstate | January 27, 2008 7:03 PM
Obama's 2 to 1 win in SC looks impressive, but a look at the states participating in Super Tuesday show that Hillary is leading Obama by that same margin in several states. After February 5, the results at SC will become a mere footnote in the history of primaries in this country.

Grover says: "So Hillary's going to Florida. The real question is, "Is she taking Humpty Dumpty" with her?"
_______________
Your post raises an interesting issue. Can someone give a nickname to Obama's spouse like, say, “Wicked Witch,” or are nicknames like "Humpty Dumpty” reserved for white candidates only?
If Obama gets elected doe this mean no one can ever use the words “fairy tale” again, or any other words that might suggest he doesn’t know what he’s doing or what he’s talking about or that he might be full of BS, because that might be shouted down as racially insensitive?
That’s a serious issue, regardless of Obama’s politics, if political speech is going to be curtailed about something as important as the performance in office of the president of the United States, because someone’s feelings might supposedly get hurt.
I’m guessing anything remotely resembling any of the delightful remarks about Bush's chimpy appearance, intelligence, preparedness for office and performance in the last seven years would pretty much be out with the prince Obama.
Can you imagine four years of an Obama adminstration's racial slicing and dicing? What a mess. No way.

Bravo Brandon H. I so sincerely agree with your thought process. It has never been for me during the campaigns about race or gender but alot of people, media especially, have hyped the campaigns to be race only or gender only issues. Let's just listen to the candidates and watch their actions. I would still love to know who are those 15 Million people that Senator Obama's healthcare proposal will exclude! He hasn't said.

Concede what? Obama won more delegates than Clinton in Nevada. Hasn't Hillary been saying that this is a battle for delegates?

Obahama's supporters had better handle him carefully, because one fall, and he is done. Don't you all see through the rhetorical crap that there is a fragile ego that is ready to cry racism at the slightest provocation?

South Carolina has a short memory and is ungrateful - Hillary has worked for all women and minorities.
The Clintons will continue where they left off 8 years ago. Florida and the other modern states know that and will come through.

Why are we pretending that this is not a race war? Why put the scarlet "R" on the Clintons? The Clintons are not culpable here. This is an all out American cultural race war with the Obhama camp holding all the cards and intimidating Ameerica with that. The white folks are losing so far because many of them are hypnotized by the politacal rhetoric that exploits their idealistic hope for a united America. And who are all these whiite folks voting for Obama when the black folks are outrightly rejecting their white candidates? Are they all bona fide Democrats, or are they Republicans with a strategy? Come on Americans! The Nile is a River in Egypt, not in America. Get real! Neither Obama nor Hillary can wipe out racism in America! And trust me, Obama is no MLK! He is just another political hustler like the rest of them.

I keep wondering if HIllary might be wise to start talking about how being a woman will effect her policy course ... we get to hear how being a minority makes Mr. Obama so much more in touch with the "base". I am willing to come right out and say that I want Hillary to win in a large part because she is a woman and I believe that the female leaders of the world will never have a global voice until WE say they are equal and should be heard. I strongly believe that the world's women could bring a very different kind of reality to this world ... a better one concerned about the welfare of people. Too bad we have to be so careful about such things.
I also agree that the media continuously sets Hillary up to look as bad as possible. I watch Tim Russert today interview John McCain this morning and he was very respectful. A few weeks ago when he interviewed Hillary, he was the equivalent of a criminal prosecuter to her. I no longer care to watch Tim Russert and always thought he was a pretty good unbiased journalist.

If all the Dem candidates are still honoring their pledge not to campaign here, why are Obama ads running on CNN being broadcast in Florida?
Posted by: Minerva | January 27, 2008 5:29 PM
... Because Obama doesn't OWN CNN and the DNC told him it was okay because he didn't have any control over what CNN broadcast so he wasn't breaking the party rules.
But here go the Clinton's again, breaking promises and expecting everyone to feel sorry for them.
It looks, too, like the Republicans are going to deny McCain and so we'll have 4 more years of the Clintons. The best we can hope for is that she yells more at Bill than she does at the nation.

You ignoramouses!!!! Billary wants to change the rules to benefit themselves. I'll bet if the polls said Obama was ahead they wouldn't be trying to seat those delegates. Just like they wanted everyone to believe they had nothing to do with the suit in Nevada, when they didn't object to the polling places prior to the endorsements given to Obama. As far as Obama advertising in Florida, everyone knows that in order to buy national airtime, there are certain markets that included. You have no choice as to what states are included.

Many of these posts here seem to be more of the smear campaigns against Obama and are often filled with half-truths or outright lies. I have often thought, that the Clintons were mean and selfish people, but after having read some of the pro-Clinton posts here, like looking to defame Obama's spouse by creating nicknames for her... well - I guess, I can understand, what kind of person would vote for the Clintons.
Perhaps, some of you have forgotten (or too young to remember) things like...
- NAFTA (loss of American jobs)
- China in the WTO (loss of our jobs, part II)
- The White Water Scandal (and related "mysterious suicide" and convictions of Clinton business partners)
- Monica Lewinski (where our President taught a whole generation of kids the meaning of the word "Fellatio")
- Hillary comments on not using New York as a stepping stone for the Presidency, when she ran as Senator there (and a state to which - being a New Yorker myself - she has promptly ignored ever since).
- And of course, all the dirty campaigning, mudslinging, and broken promises they've been engaging in during the course of this election.
The list goes on and on. Yes, it's true, Hillary has more experience than Obama (who has about as much experience as Lincoln did, when he went to the White House) - but her and her husbands experiences are hopefully not the kind, we must be forced to relive again.
It would be great to have a woman as a President, sure... but not just any woman for the sake of womanhood - and certainly not someone like her. This election is too important for that.

The Democratic party of Florida is imploring their party members to go out and vote on January 29th. There is a very important property tax constitutional amendment on the ballot. If you are a democrat in Florida, please go out and vote!
Keep in mind that is was "the Republican Speaker of the House that made it a priority to move up the Primary to January, in violation of both Democratic and Republican National Committee Rules. The Legislature passed the bill, which also included the new requirement that all Florida elections have a paper trail starting in 2008. Governor Charlie Crist signed the bill into law in May." and "Unfortunately, Florida Democrats are outnumbered almost 2 to 1 in the Legislature."
And, of course, the Governor of Florida is a Republican. I am ashamed of my party going along with this ridiculous disenfranchise of the Florida Democrats over something that was initiated and relatively mandated by Republicans!
I commend Hillary for respecting the Florida Democrats and campaigning there. Someone has to stand up to the steam-rolling Republicans! You go girl!

I find the many negative comments directed at Obama and Clinton distasteful. They really to have very similar platforms and opinions on the major issues, and I think that no one will disagree that they would both make better presidents that the one we have now.

Wow the Venom is flying. Enjoying watching the personal affects of a primary election. The DNC voted to leave Michigan and Florida out. It had nothing to do with the Clintons, Edwards or Obamas. How anyone is assigning blame to a specific candidate speaks volumes. If you truly live in Florida or Michigan and have posted..... then you know your anger lies with the DNC. If you've pointed fingers at certain candidates in blame for these two states, then you're just venting - which is understandable, but just focused in the wrong forum.
Posted by: karl | January 28, 2008 5:04 PM
I want to thank "Wolf" for a very insightful post...and to note that "Thor" has a valid point as well.
If you're a Democrat and you're throwing around such harsh sentiment within your own party, that is a real shame. We're best served as a party by focusing on issues, and each of us voting for the candidate we think best serves the party and the country IN OUR OPINION. By rising above the name-calling when we try to convince our friends, families and complete strangers on the internet to join us in our views we actually get the chance to have our candidate taken seriously for the right reasons.
I am an Obama supporter, but I would NEVER slam someone who feels a real connection with Clinton or Edwards. I also won't resort to making negative statements about other candidates. I respect everyone's right to make an informed choice, and hope that we can all take a step back and focus on the big picture: A Bush-free White House, with a Democrat at the helm

So where can anyone get a real democratic election? not in the USA? are you all really proud of yourselves?
Why not vote with your hearts?
I donʻt like the way the Clintons try to push people around and lends credence to more politics as usual, that we are all so sick of. And Obamaʻs name is one that will get more affinity from abroad, giving him a chance to work democratic policies; for real; not like Bill didnʻt.

In the end it comes to this. In Nevada when the teachers union sued the culinary workers union over the "at large caucus loactions" (Which Hillary won 7 of the nine:) the obama people freaked out claiming they were being disenfranchised. Apparently they dont mind disenfranchisement so much when it benefits them. Just part of the Obama hypocrisy
Posted by: Tim | January 29, 2008 4:37 AM
Obama whining about NV? I would be a little upset if my opponent cheated. Bill clinton was at all the precincts in the casinos steering people away from cacusing. People were so starstruck that they either did not caucus at all or went with with hillary. We cant have another 8 years with a Clinton in the white house. Clinton was allowed to campaign in the casinos THREE days before the NV caucus and Obama wasnt until the morning of. Clintons campaign broke all the rules in the casinos, and by the way some of you need to seriously do some studying.. Obamas "radical religious backgrounds" you obviously have absolutely no idea what youre talking about. Hillary is diffinetly not the rational chioce.
Posted by: Cris | January 29, 2008 11:54 AM
Definitely, Julianne is the most neutral of all the commentators here when discussing the politicians, and if anyone has anything remotely nasty to say about either Clinton or Obama, try phrasing it such that it doesnt seem like youre bashing one candidate or the other.
For instance, Hillary's intention for universal health care may bode well for all of the US citizens who need health care, except that that may adversely affect pharmaceutical and medical companies. Another possibility, Obama's argument that he opposed the war from the start is a convenient argument since he was not elected to the senate at the time of which voting for the war occurred.
I'd say these statements are relatively neutral remarks, pointing out certain discrepancies in how the public perceives candidates.
It's not as if people are going around saying Osama-no-I-meant-Obama, but saying Billary or referring to Hillary as a witch are totally acceptable as if any of the candidates were actually anathemas.
If you support a candidate, at least be respectful and responsible. Just because politics is an inherently nasty field doesn't mean a candidate's supporters much act disgracefully.

Wow.. Baltimorons.. so it's safe to say Maryland will be going for Hillary? I've never heard so much veiled racism in one discussion before. Disgusting, and just proves that this nation truly isn't ready to elect a minority president.
I agree with some of these comments pointing out that this divisiveness is only going to hurt our party, and last time I checked Obama wasn't the one practicing the GOP-rooted politics of personal destruction. Middle class, midde-aged white voters have always been the bane of the Democratic party. .. when are you fools going to learn? Here's to hoping the Under 30 vote can cancel out your votes for Hillary and the pandering, perjuring clown Bill.
