CONCORD, N.H. – John Edwards has a simple philosophy when it comes to fine-tuning his message for New Hampshire: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Edwards regaled a crowd of more than 200 this morning with indictments of corporate greed and lobbyists' grip on Washington D.C., along with pledges to fight for universal health care, fairer trade deals and an end to the Iraq war. He proclaimed himself the underdog in Tuesday's primary, but added "the real underdog in America is the middle-class, the low-income families in America who are struggling just to survive."

It's essentially the same pitch Edwards gave Iowans in the weeks leading up to his second-place finish in the Jan. 3 caucus (won by Sen. Barack Obama), and it's very similar to the language he employed on an early-fall swing through New Hampshire. And it stands in contrast to several other candidates touring the state this weekend, who have retooled their messages to appeal to New Hampshire's independent-minded voters and to incorporate lessons from the Iowa results.

Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton is delivering a New Hampshire stump speech that warns of sharp contrasts with Obama, and which Boston Globe article this morning called "remarkable for the number of new elements introduced in it." Republican Mitt Romney has re-branded himself a man of "change," and GOP rival Mike Huckabee has toned down his religious references and upped his tax talk

Edwards aides call the success of the former North Carolina senator's message the "unwritten story of Iowa." The Edwards field organization targeted 42,000 Iowans for caucus-night turnout, spokesman Mark Kornblau said. Some 80,000 Iowans ended up choosing Edwards.

"They went and caucused for him based on this message," Kornblau said.

The biggest tweak in Edwards' speech post-Iowa is his attempt to re-frame the nomination fight as a battle between what he calls the two "change candidates" – himself and Obama - and excludes Clinton, who was long perceived as the national frontrunner. Edwards differentiates himself from Obama largely by saying he'll take a more confrontational approach to corporate interests, particularly insurance and pharmaceutical lobbyists, when pushing issues such as universal health coverage.

In Concord this morning, Edwards let his favorite campaign surrogate – his wife Elizabeth - distinguish him from his two leading rivals in much bolder terms.

Elizabeth Edwards said her husband had reacted more presidentially to the assassination of Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto, telephoning the Pakistani president to plead for democratic progress while his rivals "raced for the microphone". She said he was the most dependable to negotiate fairer trade and the only one of the trio to oppose new nuclear power plants.

Without naming names, she said his health care credentials trumped Obama – whose plan would leave an estimated 15 million Americans without insurance, because it does not mandate health coverage – and Clinton, who had the chance to achieve universal care under her husband's administration a decade ago and instead chose "to spend (her) political capital on passing NAFTA."

She also said two candidates had voted for Iraq war funding without withdrawal timelines attached – again, Clinton and Obama – but didn't mention her husband's since-repudiated vote to go authorize the war in the first place.

Asked if Edwards himself would soon start drawing bolder contrasts with his opponents, Kornblau replied "there's time for that." Reminded that only three days remain before the New Hampshire primary, he replied "there's lots of time after Tuesday."

I'm starting to get interested in Edwards because he seems sincere about representing the middle class. Health care is a huge issue to me, and I like his plans in this area.

Edwards is The Man!

The others are copying him!

He is the best, most electable!

I agree with the previous poster. John Edwards is the man for the job and deserves to be the Democratic nominee. His message is far more powerful and sincere than that of Barack Obama's. Obama speaks of "hope" without any substance. Edwards's experience and sincerity resonate with me far more than the other candidates' fluff speeches.

Thank You, for a well-considered and honest article about John Edwards. You've touched on many of his fine points, here are a few less specific observations that many have remarked on.
His wife Elizabeth is a remarkable "helpmeet" in this campaign. I'm a woman and though the term is redolent with sexist shadings it's appropriate in this context. She is informed and extremely quick when confronted with disingenuous questions from "news-readers".

I've got an advantage in that I don't have t.v. and thus must rely on the web and foreign papers for my info. When one compares Edward's policy with that of Obama and Clinton there's a dearth of specifics. The two front-runners offer vague, placating and contradictory views and one finds it difficult to pin them down.

Charisma is something that many refer to with regard to Obama; Clinton, not so much. With Edwards, his manner is forthright and clear whilst still approachable and engaging. Many feel he is a talented and able presidential contestant and we are angry that the main stream news is so overtly avoiding mention of him. He's a threat to the "ptb" and many see that as a positive force for the "little guy"

NO more-
Hillary Clinton dynasty,
John McCain's Politics of Fear,
John Edward's Politics of Convenience,
Corrupted Health Industry.

ITS SICKENING.

!!! ITS TIME FOR CHANGE !!!

Hillary Clinton and John Edwards Voted for War on Iraq.
Barack Obama opposed this and he was right.

Hillary Clinton supported Bush on aid to Pakistan for wrong reasons.
Barack Obama opposed this and he was right.

John Edwards is using populist theme for convenience in this election and is a big hypocrite.
Remember that John Edwards was a Trial Lawyer, worked for a Hedge Fund Company and has 28000 sq ft mansion and $400 hair cuts.

Barack Obama is a community organizer from the beginning and is honest person and refused to be a Trial Lawyer.

BARACK OBAMA's JUDGEMENT TRIUMPHS OVER HILLARY CLINTON'S WRONG EXPERIENCE.

BARACK OBAMA'S HONESTY TRIUMPHS OVER JOHN EDWARDS'S HYPOCRISY.

BARACK OBAMA'S POLITICS OF HOPE TRIUMPHS OVER JOHN MCCAIN'S POLITICS OF FEAR.

!!! VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA !!!

The only way to effect true change in our country is to support our only progressive candidate, John Ewards. Senator Obama is well intentioned yet fails to effectively present an action plan that will cause the change he wants to bring to our nation. Do you want real change or someone talking about change? Senator Clinton is brilliant, effective and capable but has abandoned her progressive roots. Perhaps she would shed her moderate plataform if elected. I'm not willing to take that chance. Are you?

It doesn't seem to matter what we think out here in Oregon but John Edwards is by far the best candidate and New Hampshire needs to use their inteligence and see through the hoopla and $$$ of the other two.

I am self employed and 100% for John Edwards because he is the only candidate that has not changed his story, his convictions, nor his intent to fight for the middle class.

John Edwards is not mentioned on huffpo at all since the caucuses.
Somebody is really tightening the screws.

John Edwards for President.

I haven't decided as yet who to support but, John Edwards continues to be largely ignored by the press despite the fact he was the democratic VP candidate in the last election. If the press would simply give him a fair amount of recognition he might have a chance to compete. Certainly edging out Hillary in Iowa indicates he may be a viable candidate.

Dear jkojs,
I'm happy you supporting Obama. He is a good candidate. I strongly disagree with your politics of hate, portraying John Edwards as a hypocrite. Firstly, being a self-made millionare, I see nothing wrong with him building a big home for his wife or paying to have a stylist come to his hotel room to give him a haircut. He earned his money and can spend it as he pleases. The Roosevelts and Kennedys, great leaders and agents for social change, were also wealthy. What difference does it make. Over the past six years John Edwards established a poverty centre at UNC which has earned critical praise for its policy work; He has worked with local groups to lobby state legislatures to raise the minimum wage in several states; He has criss-crossed the country several times over to raise money for and campaign for state democrats at all levels of government; He has walked God know how many picket lines. I just don't see the hypocrisy you talk about, and for the record I think he would make a great president!

Mr Obama has borrowed (shall we say) liberally from John Edwards' original words and themes from 2004 and 2008 campaigns. The original change candidate is John Edwards who came up with these ideas FIRST when they were UNtested and UNpopular. He cannot catch a break with the press who rush to annoint either Hillary or Obama so we can all call our nation much more enlightened than we used to be. But, at what cost? If we are so enlightened, then ISSUES and VISION should matter, not someone's persona. The untold story is how Edwards came in second in Iowa over Hillary when he was outspent $5 to $1. I say a vote for Edwards is a vote for a Democratic president in 2009. He's tested, he's sincere and he has vision. Go John!... the forgotten, but scrappy, candidate.

I am not even sure Obama is well intentioned. Look at his ties to corporate interests and the land deal he got on his house from a man that is facing corruption charges. Everyone knows Chicago politics is shady and Obama is just as shady. Google Obama house scandal.

The media is trying to ignore Edwards because his message obviously does not play well with the corporate-owned media. This country needs a real leader and that is exactly what Edwards has done throughout this race- he has set the agenda and the tone of the conversation and since day one Obama and Hillary have been playing catch-up. I am so thankful that Edwards is in this race because he is making the Democratic Party act like what is was meant to be- the party of the PEOPLE!!!

John Edwards is the only candidate, Democrat or Republican, that is truly interested in the middle class (or what used to be called the Working Class). Obama is inspiring, yes, but is far too concerned about including Republicans and a host of others who have absolutely NO concern for the masses of Americans who work day to day to make ends meet. Hillary is a fine candidate but if you look at the $$$$$ CASH $$$$$ she has taken from all of the corporations and lobbyists it will make you sick. That's why she is very very very quiet when John Edwards brings up the fact that you can't be taking money and being buddy buddy with the oil companies, Pharma companies, health care companies and more, and still fight them on behalf of the American WORKING CLASS! NH Democrats do yourselves a BIG favor and vote for John Edwards. He is the only hope for the natural Democratic Constituency. Since "change" is such an important word in this presidential election. Let's talk. Obama wants nicey nicey change - Can't-we-all-get-along change - John Edwards is going to the White House to grab the corporate interests by the throat and make actual, real and meaningful CHANGE for the masses, for us the working men and women of America.

If I was a dem loser and needed the government to feed me, to house me, to tell me what to do and to depend on them for health care...I'd vote for John Edwards because his hair is beautiful, while Baracks is too short and he has big ears.

Paulo

I'm french and can't believe that a country like USA doesn't have and doesn't care about healthcare, you need to be less selfish people.

As for John Edwards, he was for the Iraqi War ? It's not a big deal, it is more easy for you today to criticize him many years after, could you imagine that USA will do that 4 years ago ? Could you understand that some people voted for this war only because they can't accept what Saddam Hussein did to the 3/4 of this people. Some was for this war for fuel, some others only wanted to strike down Saddam Hussein. It's easy to criticize today.

John Edwards will help us avoid a Great Depression like the 1930s because Edwards will ACT SWIFTLY.
President Herbert Hoover failed to stop the Great Depression, saying the "free market" will work. It didn't.
John Edwards will act decisively to avoid a major depression or resolve one if it's already here when he takes office.

If I was repub dummy I would be oblivious to the fact my party is corrupt and I would take to heart every three word slogan that spewed from the mouths of right wing fanatics who are specifically targeting the uneducated and the blinded by blind faith religious fanatics. Reading Paulo's opinions should reminds us all that the ignorant should not be underestimated (remember the last 2 elections). Don't be too hard though on Paulo, judging from his comments, I think his parents are related.

Paulo,
I've known people who've worked hard every day of their lives who have problems feeding their families, or providing access to healthcare. What are you, an inhuman monster? Edwards wants to help everyone get a shot at the American Dream, and missing it due to healthcare or corporate greed simply shouldn't be "The American Way".

"If I was a dem loser..."

No Paulo, you're just a loser. No one really cares what you think. Good day.

John Edwards is a hypocrite. He lives in a 28,000 square foot mansion and owns a 3,000 square foot beach house.
He says he is for working families while he makes massive dollars from suing big pockets in his role as a trial lawyer on steroids.
He worked for and partly owned a hedge fund that foreclosed on 34 houses in ravaged New Orleans where he kicked off his campaign.
He hates corporate greed and regularly sues corporations to transfer wealth from them to him.
He wants socialized health care and many more entitlement programs at a time when America is drowning in New Deal and War on Poverty entitlements with no end in sight.
He hates Doctors and regularly sues them too--his socialized health care would make them slaves to government with tyrant Edwards in charge.
Give us all a break go back to suing the world and let us get a good President not a greedy one like Edwards! Jerry White, Springfield, IL

OK...and how do you feel as a rep loser?

John Edward's personal success demonstrates that his populist message is not from personal envy. He's been very successful in modern day America. To set that aside to work to improve America is very admirable.

Obama is well intentioned but naive. He believes that he is going to go to Washington, DC and work with the republicans for change! Only Edwards and Clinton recognize the Republicans for what they are and know what they have to do to implement change. If Obama thinks he is going to go to Washington riding a new wave of cooperation he is dreaming. After his election they will use every dirty trick they know to destroy him and his presidency.

Obama is too concerned about his race. He's got a lot of baggage.

Edwards or Huckabee would be great!

Obama is too concerned about his race. He's got a lot of baggage. He's an angry mixed person.

Edwards or Huckabee would be great!

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JOHN EDWARDS AND THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE IS THAT ONE TELLS THE TRUTH AND THE OTHER DOESN'T. Come to think of it, YOU CAN'T TELL THE TRUTH IF YOU'RE FINANCED BY THE SPECIAL INTERESTS OF CORPORATE GREED, SPONSORS AND LOBBYISTS!

..and living in a mansion and winning malpractice judgments for injury victims is, in itself, hardly hypocrisy notwithstanding the swift-boaters already ensconsed on this site!

John Edwards has won my trust and my vote; he's the real deal. He's also the worst nightmare of the Republicans and business-as-usual in DC. He's consistent, committed, focused, caring, very very intelligent--and he can go the distance. Edwards has been so thoroughly vetted and tested that those who criticize can only come up with the "phony" charge. Sorry, but the guy isn't too good to be true; he's authentic, as is his wife Elizabeth. And for those who are disturbed by his wealth; remember, he earned every penny. It doesn't take someone who's poor to advocate for the poor. He will make a fine President and we need him!

Although I will vote for whomever the nominee is for the Dems, I had not really been terribly enthusiastic about any of the candidates until the last week or so. I personally think Russ Feingold is one of the few member so Congress to show any balls, and definitely would have supported him if he had decided to run, but other than him all I saw were a bunch of people who were basically revisionist moderates. That is, until I started watching John Edwards more closely and taking the time to read his speeches and watch them online (since they never appear on msm outlets). I have to admit I was not seriously considering him since, in my opinion, he had totally and completely waffled and folded during his debate with Dick Cheney.
I had been an enthusiastic supporter of his until that night. It was such an embarassing letdown it had the effect of my completely writing him off and refusing to take him seriously. However, that being said, I also recognize that people grow and learn and use their experiences to become stronger. I believe that during the last four years John Edwards has become much clearer and stronger in his convictions and his ability to articulate and defend them.
I am also old enough to remember back in the eighties when the Dems had had controll of Congress for years, but the so called Reagan revolution had begun, how they completely folded under Reagans presumed popularity.
Reagan got everything he wanted because the Dems were so afraid to buck a popular president. They let them selves become laughing stocks and in a few years "liberal" became
a dirty word. The disgusting thing about this is...that no matter HOW popular or unpopular a Republican president is, it apparantly doesnt matter to the democratic congress. They just keep rolling over.
Once the Rethugs gained controll they pulled out the whips and chains and that was it. They impeached Clinton when he had an approval rating of 68 percent. Yet the dems are afraid of Bush who is at 30. And those 30 are the crazies who will approve of the repugs no matter what and would kill themselves before they would vote dem so they would have absolutely nothing to lose by standing up to him, but dont do it anyway.
So, all that is the prelude to why I have decided to enthusiastically support John Edwards. The Republicans have had the Dems over the barrel, (in more ways than one) for almost twenty five years. Right now we need someone who is willing to stand up and FIGHT. No matter how noble and inspiring Obama sounds, to quote Michael Moore.."the republicans will eat him for breakfast". And Hillary has just way to much negative baggage to deal with. I dont blame her at all for that, it was the media and the rethugs who have been trashing her for years, but its there none the less. Its time to have a president who will kick some repug ass (new house and Senate leaders would help too.) There is always all this talk of bipartisonship yada yada yada from the repugs when they have the advantage but if we havent learned by now they always do the exact OPPOSITE of what they say and always do EXACTLY what they accuse the dems of doing (think Liberal Media and congressional obstuctionism) we havent learned anything. This country is going down the tubes, the economy is about to tank, the infrastucture is disintegrating, it has become a big giveaway party for the ultra rich and the rest of us are screwed.
At this time I would much rather have a successful pitbull trial lawyer fighting for me than Dr. Phil.

Did anybody view the George Stepanopolis show where that right wing reactionary ,fascist, George Will, referred to John edwards as a trotsky-ite. Now they fired Dom Imus for hate speech , something needs to be done to terminate his apperances on the show if he thinks a Democrat is taking action which by its implication would be treasonist.

So nice to see something about Edwards other than the typical glossing or Coulter-inspired negativity. One thing neither he nor Elizabeth mention often is that John is the only one who decisively beats all of the GOP candidates.
This is the only time since FDR that an individual as progressive as Edwards has a chance to become our leader. I have never been as unrealistic of a diehard supporter of any politician but this guy is for real!

Not only is John fighting for us against them and big money but he also has to fight the media blackout imposed upon his campaign.

Grrrrr… Go get em John
