Reagan%20signs%20MLK%20holiday.jpg
President Ronald Reagan signs legislation creating the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday as Coretta Scott King, the civil-right's leader's widow, watches, Nov. 2, 1983. Reagan Presidential Library.

by Frank James

Given the New Hampshire comments by Sen. Hillary Clinton about it taking a president to make dreams a legislative reality, for which she was excoriated by some of Sen. Barack Obama's supporters, and Obama's Nevada comments about Reagan being a transformational president, for which he was castigated by Sen. Clinton, her husband former President Bill Clinton and others, this seemed like an appropriate photo to run today.

Somone should just make love to Rayguns corpse at the next GOP debate. That man should then be given the nomination. Your party is stuck in the past because it has no future!

Good photo. I didn't understand the uproar about Obama's comments about Reagan. Mrs Clinton lists Reagan as one of her favorite Presidents too.

Happy MLK day top all at The Swamp.

listen to the life & times of Dr. King live! now on 1400 am in south florida and on the web @ www.mystikradio.com

Happy MLK Day, everyone and Thank God we had a man like President Reagan in office who had the guts to make it an official holiday way before several states wanted it to become one.

Frank James, don't you think that first post is a little offensive to run on a holiday when we should all celebrate?

See Wing Nuts, your party wasn't always so racist.

And Ronnie raised taxes several times!!!!!!

Is Jeff a member of the PC police and is he calling the shots at the Swamp now? Glad to see the home state of maverick Senator John McCain is finally celebrating this holiday. It only took them 17 years to recognize MLK day. I wonder why Senator McCain didn't have a bigger influence in getting that changed a lot sooner? Can we expect more of the same feet dragging and silence if he's President?

Although the photo is real, the implication you're trying to create -- that Reagan supported the MLK federal holiday -- is completely false. It's a matter of public record that Reagan opposed the MLK federal holiday. He only signed it when the Democratic congress in 1983 passed the holiday legislation by veto-proof majorities, giving Reagan no choice. Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) fought the bill in the Senate and it was his obscene comments attacking MLK as a communist that back-fired on Republican senators and caused them to reluctantly support the bill.

If you're trying to make an analogy between Reagan and President Johnson, the fact is Johnson (unlike Reagan and his mentor, Barry Goldwater) supported civil rights legislation and twisted the arms of white supremists in Congress in 1964 and 1965 to pass the laws. This caused deep South segregationists to jump to the Republican party, like Strom Thurmond.

watch out loon - if you say ANYthing about Reagan at all except to insult him, chillary and her enforcer hubby will come down on you like WHITE on condaleeza rice

in the clinton manifesto, only clintons are allowed to say anything good about reagan (or MLK for that matter)

that's why billary will NEVER be able to build the cohesiveness our nation desparately needs like Reagan did in his time and like Obama will do if Hillary and "THE MAN" would give him an opportunity (chillary and gollum clinton could never help to heal this nation even in their wildest dreams - obama stands a much better chance at that and america knows it - but gollum wants "his precious" back so he and his surrogate, hillary will spend any amount of money and say or do anything to keep obama down)

What a ridiculous comment by Raving Loon, but not one that surprises me. On a day when the ENTIRE country should be celebrating our commonalities despite our differences, here comes a hateful Democrat attempting to spoil our reflection.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but does Raving Loon's hypocritical comments represent the Left's view in general? I hope not.

Nor is The Republican Party rascist now. Republicans have not imposed generations of brain enslavement maintained through false rhetoric. A rascist organization probably would not have any need for the services of a Colin Powell or Condoleeza Rice. All of America should be proud of their contributions and accomplishments. I surely am.

HEAR! HEAR!

Great post, Roadkill.

Everyone knows Reagan ran as the anti-civil rights candidate. To in any way try to suggest that Reagan was in favor of anyone that had anything to do with civil rights is LUDICROUS!

Reagan tried his best to undo everything King stood for. The posting of this photo and FLASHBACK is an insult to Dr. King's memory.

Just look at the expression on Mrs. King and the VP to get the real feelings behind this signing.

Nice try, Swamp. But the Reagan-Johnson analogy holds no water. Johnson led on civil rights bringing virulent congressional opposition with him kicking and screaming. Congress brought Reagan with it kicking and screaming when it came to MLK Day.

But I'm sure Obama appreciates your attempt to rehabilitate his credibility.

Raving Loon,

You're ignorance has no bounds...

40% of the house democrats (21 in all), including Robert Byrd and Al Gore sr,
opposed The 1964 Civil Rights Act.

80% of the house Republicans supported The 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Oh, and let's not forget F.D.R's Japanese internment camps...

Loon don't get sick, but in 1968, Ronald Reagan signed legislation which apologized for America's [racial prejudice] against the Japanese.

So Loon, who has the racist party???

Paulo

Pillow,
Show us a picture of you hugging a black man and/or kissing a black woman on the cheek in a friendly way. I can here you puking at the thought, you racist pile.

Oooops...Reagan signed the legislation in 1986, not 1968....sorry Loon.

Paulo

And more worthless gibberish from another of the worst mankind has to offer: Dumb Dumb Janet.
Hey, Janet, do you still think a .7 C INCREASE equates to a 33.26 F INCREASE? Do you not know that 0 C is 32 F? That a .7 C increase is a 1.26 F increase?
Anyway, Dumb Dumb Janet, the reality is the Republicans have largely been at the forefront of bettering the lives of black people. It was the Reagan administration and William Bennett to point out the crime of Chicago's rotten school system, and how that school system was failing black students.
It was the Republican party that made the Civil Rights Act pass, not the Democratic party. Hmmmm, if Republicans voted for it and Southern Democrats voted against it, how does that equate to Republicans not being for civil rights?
Also, the current President Bush has had THE MOST diverse cabinet in U.S. history, and Bush did not make a big deal out of it, like Liar Clinton tried with his cabinet. More blacks and more Hispanics have had higher positions in this country under a Republican administration than they ever had under ANY Democratic administration.
But Dumb Dumb Janet and her ilk live in a perverse alternative reality world of perpetual stupidity.

Everett McKinley Dirksen of Illinois (R) and many other Republicans led the fight for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the Senate.

More people of color have served at cabinet level positions in the Bush Administration than any other presidency before it.

Why do we have to fight over who's most responsible for the MLK holiday and the Civil Rights Act on this most important of days? Can't we just celebrate how far we've come?

Yes, happy MLK day Libs. Try to abide by this famous quote:

"I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Remeber, that doesn't mean: "paypack time against Whitey"

That's not what equal rights are and that's not what MLK dreamed about.

Let that sink in for a bit.

JD, have we as a society no obligation to try and lift some of the burden that generation of discrimination have placed on African-Americans? Do we owe them anything, in your opinion? Are efforts to undo the legacy of generations of injustice "payback" or paynment for what has been stolen?

JD,
40 acres and a mule sound familiar to you? Ever heard of it?

"JD, have we as a society no obligation to try and lift some of the burden that generation of discrimination have placed on African-Americans?"

The Native Americans would like an answer to that too Luke. Quick, offhand when is "Native American's Day" without looking it up?

We Shall Overcome ...08 !

"40 acres and a mule sound familiar to you? Ever heard of it?"

OH, so I guess pay back is the goal. Real nice. Just remember you can't do anything unless it's thru a white liberal....or so Hillary and co. will have you believe. Wake up, the Dems have been pandering to blacks for years. Show some self respect and don't believe the hype. Fight the power or something.

I am personally sending deed to 40 acres and a mule to Spike Lee so he'll STFU.

...or at least stop making the same movie over and over again.

Did you notice the great civil rights champions Reagan invited to the signing ceremony? George H.W. Bush and Howard Baker! Other than Mrs. King, whom else do you recognize as a black leader? Reagan opposed establishing a holiday to honor Dr. King. I remember seeing Reagan on t.v. stating that he was opposed to the holiday, but since Congress had enacted the holiday statute he was bound to sign it. Reagan simply staged a signing ceremony to protect himself from criticisms of racism or insensitivity, and so that the easily fooled would pass the prevarication that he supported the holiday down the decades.

Richard, you are dim, aren't you? In the photo, other than Reagan there are eight people who can be seen or partially seen. Five of the eight are black. One is George Bush, the VP and one is Howard Baker, the Republican Senate leader. Both active in attaining civil rights. Also, Reagan was instrumental in getting blacks in higher positions. In fact, it was Reagan who began moving Colin Powell up the chain of command.

The Native Americans would like an answer to that too Luke. Quick, offhand when is "Native American's Day" without looking it up?

You will never find me defending the treatment of the Native American peoples by our ancestors. It was Genocide. We owe them a great debt as well.

Posted by: JD | January 21, 2008 9:50 PM

Yes JD, to a certain extent "payback" IS the goal as you define it. We have an obligation to try to repair the damage centuries that slavery and discrimination has wrought on the African American community, damage that benefited the rest of the nation. We stole from them. We still own the stolen goods. We need to give some back.

Well, the Republic like to blend in & continue to try to confuse Democracy. The truth is absolute power leads to absolute corruption.

Everyone knows, Republics seek this power. Stop lieing to yourself. This is why the world will end. War between good & evil will soon follow.
Republicians only do things to ease the pressure of complete kaos. Only to maintain control. You made the laws & your slowly wakening up a sleeping dragon. Greed will eventually destroy you. Democracy is about equality as it states in every religion on this peaceful planet plagued with greed. Republicians hire minorities because, we are extremely reliable thats it. We do your homework for you. Hmm, Sounds like slavery to me. MLK is about equality for all man kind not just blacks.
