LITTLE ROCK – The first thing former Gov. Mike Huckabee said as stepped off a plane just after midnight this morning in Arkansas was rather upbeat for a man who had just suffered defeat:
"It's like Christmas day to be home again," he said smiling.

It's also a bit like finding coal in your stocking, as South Carolina failed to deliver the gift – the victory – the Huckabee campaign not only needed but surely thought was theirs. Greeting about 15 supporters who welcomed the former governor as he arrived from Columbia, S.C., Huckabee was clear whom he blamed for his defeat, and it wasn't the man who beat him.

"Fred took votes from us that we could never recover," he told one couple who offered their condolences.

"Fred" is of course former Sen. Fred Thomas who didn't win a single S.C. county, but did better than Huckabee's team hoped he would in key Upstate counties, like Greenville (21 percent) and Spartanburg (20 percent). Much of the discussion on the two-hour airplane ride from South Carolina to Arkansas focused on if the Huckabee campaign should've gone negative against Thompson.

Huckabee, who chatted with every supporter at the airport, asked them all about something in their lives, obviously knowing most of them well. As much though as the interactions were personalized, he delivered one similar message repeatedly: "We're still in the game," he said.

"We live to fight another day."

How about we expose Huckabee. He's the one who ordered all of the hard drives and electronic backup systems in his office be destroyed when he was finishing his Governorship in Arkansas (this began after a file was leaked disclosing that he and his family had used emergency political funds for personal items, such as food and expensive clothing). The new Governor had to spend $400,000 of his budget to get all new computers and other systems due to the damage.

Yeah, Huckabee's not hiding anything. Also, his FairTax plan is a joke. Just like everyone else, he raised taxes and increased spending in Arkansas when he was Governor. He doesn't believe in or understand free trade policy, and worst of all, he wants to take away freedom of religion and turn this country into a theocracy modeled after his own personal beliefs.

Huckabee is a danger, and so is anyone who votes for him, as far as I am concerned.

What can be clearly seen now is this is only a three man race, McCain, Romney and Huckabee. Once Thompson bows out and since Duncan Hunter is out; and Rudy is just merely a media darling who has no credibility whatsoever...running in the low single digits, we have a horse race between the three. This could get interesting.

For Huckabee to suggest that we amend the Constitution to represent "God's living word" was too much. It was a deal breaker in South Carolina. Even the evangelical Christian Conservatives knew Huckabee went too far. The Republican nomination is now within John McCain's grasp. That's as much for the mistakes Huckabee made as it was for what McCain did right. The McCain campaign can now say----Thank you Mike Huckabee!

The second place finish didn't help Huckabee but he is far from out. McCain won in SC because the conservative vote was spread across three candidates (Huckabee, Thompson and Romney). Also, Thompson unleashed very misleading attack ads against Huckabee.

Did anyone notice that John McCain has not looked well lately? He was having trouble breathing--sounding asthmatic and his wife is always propping him up.

I could vote for Huckabee, Giuliani or McCain in a general election, but I will NEVER vote for Romney. He is the most unethical and deceitful person I've ever seen run for office. He is trying to buy the presidency with his millions. He has bought Clear Channel so he can own the media (it's working too because all the Clear Channel talk show hosts are behind him-Rush, Hannity, etc); he paid National Review to endorse him and his lapdogs at Club for Growth are attacking Huckabee through large donations from Romney-bots.

If the presidency is for sale then we aren't a free people.

A vote for McCain is a vote for more of the SAME!

Arkansas republicans have written extensively about the Huckster's records and past where they need to go much further to inform the country of exactly who he is and not what he says he is today;

"Intersting" would be the understatement of the decade. When four RINO's trade off in the polls as the fromtrunners, the word pathetic comes to mind well before the word "intersting".

When millions whine "wy didn't anyone tell us?" show a small amount of integrity and hold your tongue because someone DID tell you;

Just some comments about the article.

First of all it was Fred Thompson not Fred Thomas.

Interesting how Huckabee appears to be "blaming" Fred Thompson for his problems. Gee Mike, that's how the big boys play. You're not running against one person, you're running against them ALL. Seems like whining to me.

Perhaps the folks in South Carolina don't like the message that you've given them?

When anyone does research on Huckabee, be sure to report the whole story.

For too long we have been getting half truths and story's out of context, in other words "Romney
Lies"

I wonder what the numbers would have looked like without Fred Thompson siphoning off 16% of the vote. Once Thompson drops out, Huckabee should be pretty competitive since most of his votes will probably go to Huckabee. I've heard that Thompson might stay in the race until the debate in Florida just to take a few extra shots at Huckabee. If that is true, my opinion of him just went down.

Sorry that the Governor didn't win in SC. Probably true that McCain won because of Thompson, but that is politics. Besides, McCain had run there before and had a base from 8 years ago. Good luck with trying to expand your base now. I hope you will endorse the coming McCain-Thompson ticket.

The real story is Mitt Romney's fourth in South Carolina . It should not be forgotten he had already invested a small fortune by the time he realised he was out of the running and flew off to Nevada . He won the Nevada Caucus because no one else seriously contested it and the local party establishment backed him and the Mormons turned out in force to support him .

South Carolina is almost certainly telling us the story Romney will not carry one single Southern State. How could a man who does not win one Southern State go on and win the Republican nomination ?

For some reason, Mike Huckabee scares the daylights out of the GOP establishment. So, there is a concerted effort on their part to defeat him and McCain. It's obvious in the way the "conservative" talk show hosts repeatedly lump McCain and Huck together when discussing "liberal" Republicans. They criticize McCain for opposing GOP efforts in the Senate, for amnesty plans and for opposing Bush's tax cuts -- then they say something like "A vote for McCain OR HUCKABEE is a vote for liberalism." Guys like Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, etc., have FOR WEEKS talked up Thompson like he's viable, when they know FULL WELL all he would be good for was to siphon votes from Huckabee. Watch for Thompson to drop out after the Fla. primary, once Huck's defeat is assured. Then, he will endorse Romney, making it a two-man race, McCain vs. Romney. Then, the GOP establishment will align behind Romney and attempt to destroy McCain on Super Tuesday. It's a sneaky way to thwart the will of the majority of the Republican voters and place Romney on the ballot in November. And it's going to work.

Hey reporter get your facts straight! It is Fred T H O M P S O N not Fred Thomas. That being said here is my 2 cents.

Mike Huckabee is ridiculous..... I can't believe how brainwashed the evangelicals are over this Baptist Preacher.... It is truely scary!!!

Mike Huckabee is no conservative....he is more liberal than any of the candidates. Unfortunately, he and McCain have put on false fronts and tried to paint themselves as Reagan Republicans which is a joke. It is sad how the field of current candidates of the Republican Party is so weak and changes their platforms and platitudes with each poll. Example look at the speeches of McCain, Huckabee and Romney in Iowa and NH and then look how they quickly converted themselves into Conservative wannabees from their speeches in SC. (minus Romney)

These are just typical lair politicians that change with the wind. I feel that we are looking at the true demise of the USA and the winds of change are now blowing in our face and not our backs. Immigration, tax policy, social security, pro-growth business attitudes...these are all lacking from the current Republican candidates. I would say the closest is Thompson to true Reagan conservatism. Unfortunately, the Republicans seem not to like what he has to say.

I do believe that the chances for a Democrat in the White House in 2009 is becoming more of a reality and with that goes the last great chance that the Republican Party will have to prove to the nation that "true" Conservative values can make our nation a better place.

Because the Democ"rats" will control the WH, Congress, and then appoint liberal judges and then defacto control the Supreme Court. With that accomplished look out because here comes far left loony Communist style socialism. Political correctness run a muck and social policies that will destroy free enterprise and run the USA into a deep recession....LOOK OUT because the writing is on the wall.

As Pat Buchannan is fond of saying the death of the west is at our doorstep, the barbarians have broken down the door and are dictating the terms of our surrender. Heaven help the USA and I pray that we can save ourselves from our self because we have no one to blame but us.... No nation in the world can defeat the USA; the USA will be defeated by itself.

The looney here is John Schwartz. We have had Democratic Prsidents before and none of the things people like him claim have happened. There is absolutely nothing in the Democratic campaign thus far that suggests the nonsense he says. He is a fear monger that needs help.

Conservatives didn't give themselves enough time to learn about Huckabee, and just went with their first gut impressions and the early distorted attacks they have heard against him.

I also disliked Huckabee by instinct on first impression. But Huckabee is a stereotype buster. To understand him you have to know where he's coming from, what his real plans are, and not just judge him by his rhetoric on the stump. He's trying to reach out to bring voters into the Republican Party, as Reagan did, but he's managed to turn off a lot of people in the process.

I've had my own journey with Huckabee. First I wrote him off. Then I became interested during the "Huckaboom," but again wrote him off because of all the anti-Huck propaganda being echoed by many conservatives I respected.

I finally did the research for myself and found the attacks largely to be distortions or falsehoods. Moreover, I discovered a man who can lead. He leads by inspiring, not by browbeating people. He's got a bold, positive vision that includes the FairTax and energy independence. These are the issues of today.

We would all love to have Reagan back. But although Reagan's principles are timeless, the concrete proposals needed are different today. We need energy independence, instead of Star Wars. We need the FairTax, not just tinkering with the tax code.

We need a tough, enforcement-first immigration policy that still affirms and praises legal immigration, not an amnesty followed by a promise of enforcement.

For all these reasons, I've chosen to think for myself and vote for Huckabee. I believe in the man, and if truth wins out, he will win the nomination and the Presidency.

All the candidates are such seasoned politicians, but Mike Huckabee, I find, is the most genuine easly to relate to governor of the people I have ever studied about. My husband and I have spent days just comparing and reading his website as well as others, and Mike comes out on all counts as the true conservative. He is strong for defense and finishing well in Iraq, he is NOT for amenesty, check out where he stands on the issues, instead of believing in second hand reporting. Click "Issues" on his website. He has a creative approach to taxes-it is time to have new ideas. A vote for anyone else is more of the same. He is strong on most every issue-and he says he will surround himself with people who know their stuff, so even if he is weak in some area, a colaborated effort will help make good decisions. He is young, with energy and Mitt Romney is too polished and does not have the executive experience Huckabee does--Romeny also is for Gay Pride-he supported the Gay parade and according to the voters guide by Wallbuilders, says No to a human life amendment, no to gun rights, no to business freedom, no to opposing Gay pride and no to moral education. Huckabee is Yes to all the above. McCain voting record for amnesty is there for all to seehe voted for it, and he is weak in every area, but his war record, which, as a senator does not make him a pro to be an executive player and know how to make decisions-getting along with the other branches of government. A senator listens to others and votes. A governor works with all aspects of government and leads, and makes decisions. Check out the record of Huckabee and see how much they loved him. He was one of the five best governors of any state! He is our man: Huckabee. I think he appeals and speaks to a large variety of us, and he is a breath of fresh air. This race is NOT over yet! I think Mike has a great chance, with the grassroots move, to win this thing!

TAX HIKE MIKE is what his stated called him! Huckabee lost votes because Americans are waking up to his lying about his records throughout this whole campaign. Why don't you blame YOURSELF tax hike Mike? Would that be to honest for a minister such like yourself to do? American's don't want a US PASTOR! We are electing a US PRESIDENT! When it comes to the closed primaries then what will you and McCain do? Blame Romney next? Or what excuse will you have then? Fred Thompson is the most Honest candidate out there. His records are FLAWLESS! Huckabee has D's and F's from Cato and Club for Growth that I a single mom belongs to. We are not the club for greed, we are normal American citizens and we take offense to your lies and your being the most unintelligent candidate this country has ever seen. GROW UP MIKE HUCKABEE! YOUR THE REAL LOSER IN THIS RACE, and the most phony minister I have ever seen.

The most phony minister you've ever seen, Arlette? How about Jesse Jackson? Or Pat Robertson? Certainly they are more "phony" in this regard than Mike Huckabee?

Way to go "Allen Fuller"!!! You have taken the time and have done the necessary reading and research to know that Mike Huckabee is the best candidate of the whole lot! Too many people listen to the biased news reporters and radio hosts and base their beliefs on the inaccuracies they hear in daily doses. It's amazing to me how venomous several of you are towards Mike Huckabee. Some of you support Mitt Romney. If he would win the nomination, would it make you at all uneasy to know that he bought his way into that position? Did you read about the Northeastern University economist who has researched Romney's record and says that Massachusetts lagged in the U.S. average during 2003-2007 (during Romney's SINGLE term as governor) in job creation, economic growth and wage increases? Andrew Sum stated, "As a strict labor market economist looking at the record, Massachusetts did very poorly during the Romney years. On every measure you've got, the state was a substantial UNDER-performer." Former Govenor Mike Huckabee, however, has a long list of accomplishments. In 2005, "Governing Magazine" named him as one of its "Public Officials of the Year". He was elected to a full four-year term as governor in 1998, attracting the largest percentage of the vote ever received by a Republican gubenatorial nominee in Arkansas, then re-elected to another four-year term in Nov. 2002. Huckabee cut taxes and fees over 90 times during his ten and one-half years as governor, saving the Arkansas people almost $380,000,000! And, when he left office, Arkansas had over $800,000,000 in state surplus that Gov. Huckabee wanted to distribute as tax rebates. Those of you who haven't been poisoned by the media, owe it to yourselves and our nation to take a look at the positive and stellar accomplishments of this outstanding candidate. I did and I will back him through this process 100%!! GO MIKE!

Aw, c'mon folks! Bill Clinton didn't run Arkansas any better and he served two terms as our president. As far as Huckabee's tax record goes, well, he did the best he could with Arkansas. The FairTax, on the other hand, is a whole new ballgame. You should read about the FairTax and find out what it's really all about. OK, so he may have gone overboard when he said he wanted to revamp the Constitution New Testament style. Heck, I'll take that over a quasi-socialist regime threatened by Hillary any day!

Huck or bust!
