GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Presidential contender Mike Huckabee said today he views his candidacy more as a cause than a campaign that is challenging a "Republican establishment" more interested in preserving its Washington power base than in representing the people.
Speaking to more than 300 people in a ballroom at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, the former Arkansas governor also continued his battle against rival Mitt Romney, but also borrowed a Romney theme of change in making one of his first criticisms of John McCain, inferring the Arizona senator has been part of a "status quo" that has had a chance to solve the nation's problems and failed.
The race for Tuesday's Michigan GOP primary has rapidly developed into a three-way battle between Huckabee, the winner of the leadoff Iowa caucuses; McCain, who won the New Hampshire leadoff primary; and Romney, a native of the state who finished second in both major contests despite spending millions of dollars and now finds his candidacy on the brink.
Huckabee, seeing a late surge in Michigan, used his 35 minute speech to expand upon the usual populist-rooted themes he has used in other states to now present himself as a Republican outsider, not content upon parroting the party line.
"I'm asking you today to be a part of something that is a lot more than just a campaign. I want to think it's a cause," Huckabee said.
"Apparently my candidacy comes as somewhat of a threat to a lot of the Republicans in the Republican establishment--some of the folks who have run the party in the Washington circles," he said. "And that's ok for me because, for a long time, they've maybe not understood that the heart and the soul of the Republican Party is only as strong as the heart and the soul of the rest of America. This isn't just about Republicans. This is about the future of this country."
Huckabee also continued to chide his rivals, contending they are failing to recognize the economic anxiety that voters across the country—and particularly in Michigan—are feeling. "They quoted all the figures that had been handed out by the Republican National Committee on the two-pages of talking points" about how well the economy was doing, he said.
"If you have to work harder today than you did a year ago and you're not getting ahead, it's time that you decide that your choice Tuesday is not going to be for the same people who have kept the same policies, who have caused the same problems with the same lack of results," Huckabee said, echoing a criticism Romney has used against McCain, an Arizona senator.
"America realizes that what we've had isn't working, that there's no point in us continuing to leave the status quo—the people who've been in power to remain in power, the people who have had their chance but have not yet fixed America's problems," he said.
Huckabee said he wanted to "recapture" the GOP an unify it as "a party of working people, a party of pro-life, pro-family people, a party of people who believe in a strong national defense, a party of people who think our tax system is irreparably broken."
But the Baptist minister also reached out to religious conservatives, who were his key in winning Iowa, and said it was time that politicians no longer get a pass on running on a pledge to oppose abortion and do nothing to back it up when they get in office.
"We're people who will no longer just allow people to get elected, promising that they're listening to us about the sanctity of human life," he said. "We want to elect people who will do something about protecting human life."
Huckabee also attempted to reach out to Michigan independents and even conservative Democrats for support Tuesday in a Republican primary in which voters of any party can participate. He warned that the GOP nominee won't be successful in the fall unless a candidate is chosen "who can attract folks that aren't necessarily hard-core Republicans, hard-core Democrats, but they are hard-core Americans."
"I love my party and that's why I am what I am," he said. "But I love my country even more."
Huckabee contended the results in Michigan on Tuesday night will be important in South Carolina, where he is a leading contender in that state's primary only four days later, and in Florida on Jan 29.
"Michigan is going to make a different choice than a lot of people expect," he said. "Frankly, people in South Carolina and Florida and a lot of other places will likely kind of look at what happens in Michigan as some hint to what they might want to do there, and that's why this choice is so important."

Presidential contender Mike Huckabee said today he views his candidacy more as a cause than a campaign
Is that "cause" or "crusade"? There are other republicans that have many more qualifications to lead a nation, yet Huck carries the religious vote and low and behold, he's a contender. This is the most compeling argument against religion and politics.

So what do you suppose the Republicans would say if the Democrats had a "former Muslim cleric" running for office?

I have been a Republican for long and i understand what Huckabee is saying. My party has forgotten the working people of America. They've pursued policies that benefits big businesses and corporation. It's time to take back our party and our nation from this elies. Huckabee is the man that can do this. He's one of us and one from us. they hate him and are using all their media talking heads to bash him. Let's prove them wrong. Let's make this cause a success. It's time for America's greatest hour.

As being governor of Arkansas for 2 terms (8 years), Mike Huckabee balanced the state budget! When he ended his 2nd term as governor, Arkansas was below the national average for tax burden. He cut taxes 94 times! His Fair Tax plan is simply amazing. Mike is the best man for President.
Posted by: Bradley C. | January 12, 2008 1:41 PM
Take a GOOD look at Huckabee and the FairTax - why is it the FairTax studies only evaluate incomes up to $200,000? Because the effective tax rate for millionaires and billionaires under the FairTax is less than 1%. You can buy things of great value all day long without ever buying a new one. Think mansions, land, yachts, valuable coins, stamps, bullion, stocks and bonds - all of which increase his wealth and none of which is taxed. The things that are NEW that the super rich require will be provided them as perquisites by the businesses they control. Think company car, company house, company jet - all of which use our infrastructure and none of which is paid for by the entity using them. Why should Walmart pay for roads and bridges when they can get you to pay for free?
When you're filling your car with $3 gas and buying some $2.65 a dozen eggs, remember who is running on stopping deficit spending. The war for oil is what caused prices for anything that eats grain to skyrocket. When THOSE prices rise, the fresh fruit seller raises his prices again, now you have some nice $5 a pound grapes in the market. It's YOUR money being spent. YOU'RE the one going to pay $250 a week for groceries. Still think Ron Paul sounds like a bad idea? He's the ONLY candidate, Republican or Democrat that is running on reducing your cost of living. He's the only one that's WRITTEN books on economics, not just read them. Austrian economics are favorably mentioned in this month's Scientific American. Maybe you have plenty money. Me, I just can't afford to be boss of the world - and I'm thrilled to know that I'm actually getting to choose something other than business as usual.

I could not agree more. Its disgraceful that such religious bigots are allowed to vote at all. Perhaps we could take the vote away from such people and make it illegal for any people to vote on any issue of conscience. All politicians should be athiests, fundamentalist athiests at that.

Souther Baptist preacher? Think Jimmy Swaggart (hooker-gate), Jim Bakker (orgy-gate), Oral Roberts (gods gonna call me home-gate), Ernest Angley (just for giggles)... We Americans are not smart people and the simplistic positions this man is taking are intuitively appealling...and counterintuitively scary. Be afraid. Be very afraid!

Mike Huckabee is brilliant, he gets it. No other republicans are talking about the issues that effect everyday people. I am so sick of the rich politicians like Romney and the veteran Washington people like McCain, they are not even relating with the people. Romney and McCain will bring us more of the same. It is time for change in Washington. We need someone with fresh ideas, proven executive experience, some one who relates to everyday Americans..Mike Huckabee is represents a positive change, he will bring brighter times to America..

Huckabee is finally talking about issues and taking stands on values that most are fearful of. Our tax system is junk, our values are declining, our hope is fading. It is time for a real Republican/conservative. I am excited about Huckabee and the thought of him leading our country

Mike Huckabee brings Common Sense back to America and is outstandingly "equipped" to lead this nation into the future.
He is level-headed and genuine. I fully support his ideas for giving back to the American people the "ladder" of hope that our parents and grandparents were able to climb.
He's exactly the leader we need as America faces economic policies coming out of Washington intended to crush our ingenuity and replace our industrial zeal. Furthermore, the "powers that be" are intent upon bringing America under the global court and undermining our national sovereignty. Gov. Huckabee believes our founding fathers had it right and will stand to keep our constitutional freedoms intact. He is trustworthy.
John McCain, respectfully, is not a conservative. He has long been a "global" player.
Mike Huckabee is for free trade BUT FAIR free trade. He also believes in the American people. We need energy independence. We must rely on ourselves first and foremost. He resonates with a "can do" attitude that has kept America safe and number one in a world bent on our defeat.
This man deserves your attention.

Nathan, go back to grade school and learn not to discriminate against ANYONE - whether for race, gender, political belief, or religious belief. That same "hate" you exposed is the same "hate" that killed thousands of people on 9-11. LOVE is the only thing that will heal this nation. Mike Huckabee has it. I know Mike. I know his family. You are paranoid. Do you believe in aliens too?
Mike Huckabee has MORE executive experience than anyone running and is MORE than qualified to be our next President - and NO, he's NOT going to establish his religion on anyone else.

I couldn't agree more with Huckabee. It really is a SHAME how so many in the republican party establishment INCLUDING some religious leaders have opposed the candidacy of Mike Huckabee often playing very dirty to do so. Many SUPPOSEDLY conservative talking heads and talk radio hosts have also opposed him -continuously repeating the false charges and mischaracterizations aimed at Huckabee. In the process they have REVEALED the fact that the only thing that they are REALLY worried about "conserving" is every penny in their own wallets. No one comes CLOSE to Mike Huckabee in terms of being a bonafide conservative on all the SOCIAL issues but apparently that means diddly-squat to most of our "conservative" leaders. Mike's record and proposals on fiscal issues are nothing to scoff at either but his opponents use ANY slight vulnerability as an opportunity/means to destroy his candidacy. The same goes for other issues. Mike is a conservative on ALL the major issues and these leaders KNOW IT! As Mike alluded to in the last debate Ronald Reagan would not pass the Ron Reagan litmus test that is unfairly being applied to Mike Huckabee! What scares them is the fact that he is ONE OF US. It scares them that he doesn't owe any of THEM for his success as a candidate. It scares them that he really CARES more about PEOPLE and PRINCIPLES than he does about MONEY. I don't know about YOU but I am THRILLED to have a candidate like that! VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!!!!!

The only cause that Mike Huckabee's campaign pushes is idiocy. The man avoids the issues, and is exploiting naivety of the voters in this country. He is copying a page right out of the "W" strategy in that voters will vote for a candidate because he might be "fun to have a beer with" rather than someone who has a clue.
If Huckabee ends up as our next president, we will need a fence with Mexico to keep this voter in the US.

Huckabee is NOT TRUST WORTHY.
Huckabee had 14 ethnical violations brought against him relating to finances as governor. Shortly before announcing his candidacy for President, Huckabee ordered 83
computer hard drives and 4 servers be destroyed during his transition phase in leaving office. That's what a crooked CEO would do when he leaves a company. Remember Enron!
He raised taxes 21 times and granted clemency to 1033 convicted felons, 12 murderers and numerous rapists. Try to improve his tough on crime image with Chuck Norris. (Give me a break! If they were selling weight lose machine it would be more convincing!)
Huckabee wants to eliminate the IRS and have a national sales tax. Exactly how ignorant is this man? Then you find out the only higher education he has after high school was a 2 1/2 year of religion degree. He work as a baptist preacher selling religion for a living with people's donation for 12 years. How could anyone think this man can revive our economy?

Huckabee is a "real" Christian. By that I mean that he believes in love, forgiveness, acceptance all the things that Jesus really stands for. He is NOT a hate monger, a divisionist, or a person who supports a national religion. He is a throwback to our founding fathers -- freedom of religion, freedom to pursue a life of happiness(from the moment of conception). His Tax plan makes a lot of sense -- check it out on the fair tax site. He is the only candidate that has a clear understanding of their tax plan. MIKE HUCKABEE FOR PRESIDENT IN 2008.

You people are pathetic when it comes to religious manners. First of all, if it hadn't been for a hand from Christianity the Founding Fathers would never had made anything, because everything restates back to God! Now, how is it that you want "freedom of speech" and a voting right but you take it away from everyone except for the one pathetic drop of people in America that are ahteist?!In my opinion, Mike is the only guy in the government who will gladly stand up for what was lost and right and not back down and do what is wrong.

Mike Huckabee in 1998 said:
“I got into politics because I knew government didn’t have the real answers, that the real answers lie in accepting Jesus Christ into our lives. . . . I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ.”
And, Elizabeth Varin, Lilli, Jenny...be prepared to be subservient to your husbands no matter what. This is what this man stands for and this voter WON'T stand for the creation of a Christian sharia.

Mike Huckabee is absolutely correct in his analysis of what America needs now, and his detractors are absolutely wrong. It is time that the people rise up and take back their government from the business-as-usual crowd on the left as well as on the right. This country must recover its moral core to survive, and Huckabee is the best choice because he has the brains and the guts to do what is right to save the nation.

Dear Mr. Huckabee: you scare me to death and I am 70 years old, and don't need metamucil. this is a personal attack on Thompson. You attacked Romney's religion and equated Satan and Jesus as the Mormom creed. You are not a man of God. you are not compassionate. You are a little ceasar as in Roman days, looking to wear the crown. You copy other peoples stump speech if it pleases you. but worst of all you crossed the picket line to get your free publicity on the night shows. If Romney or any other candidate did that they would have been shot by a firing squad of the media. you certainly can pull the wool over the media's eyes. Was that a real tiger skin Janet was wearing and why isn't Peta down your throat on the killing of the birds. Bigot! Give me an honest Mormon any day. Suzi

People say they want change, but when they are confronted with real change, when the republican establishment is faced with someone who will change the party, someone like Huckabee, then its amazing how terrified they become. They ought to just admit the truth of how scared they are that republicans might actually begin to care about the people of the country more.
Huckabee is a good republican on all the issues like nat defense, immigration and tax relief he has very strong republican views. But he will make the republican party into the party it needs to be to serve the American people, and thats what we need.

A vote for Huckabee is a vote against religious (e.g. Anti-Christian) and racial (e.g. Anti-Mexican) bigotry. It is a vote against the endlessly creeping, 'Neo-Con' corporate facism that the Republican Party has been increasingly pushing since the Reagan days.
It is also a vote to help me remain Republican.

I keep hearing this refrain that mike Huckabee raised taxes $500,000,000 while governor of Arkansas. I did a little research, there are a little less than 2.9 million people living in Arkansas, If you divide 500 mil by 2.9 you get $172 per person, divide that by the 10 years that he was governor and it comes out to $17.20 a year per person, I wish my taxes would have gone up only that much!
Posted by: Bill wortman | January 12, 2008 7:30 PM
Good work Bill! Thinking for yourself seems to be a rare commodity nowadays! But the story gets better. The Cato Institute named Huckabee one of its best tax-cutters in 1998. Then, in 2002, Arkansas lost a Supreme Court case that required the state to improve its educational system and increase education funding. Between 2003 and 2006, approximately $400M of the $500M in total tax increases were passed. That means that the state saw only a $100M increase in total tax burden outside of the court-required increases for education. And yet, health care and the state's road system were dramatically improved while Huckabee left the state with an $800M surplus. That, my friends, is an infinitely more responsible fiscal record than our current Republican President. GO MIKE!!

People get used to it. Huckabee will bee out next president. It's the only choice we have to continue growing our nation. Every other choice is a further depletion of our nation. About the comment that 'many other Republicans are more experienced than Huckabee, but because Huckabee is a Baptist preacher he gets on the ticket' (paraphrased); Dude, Huckabee is the most experienced candidate, over every candidate, democrat or republican. He has 10 1/2 years (not just 8) and he served his state spendidly. Remember, Huckabee didn't put his picture in the frame in the Governor's Office (Our Boss), he rotated pictures of the common citizens of the State of Arkansas. He wanted to remind himself who he worked for everyday. He's not a politician, he's a servant and that's what politicians are supposed to be. But only a very rare, very few actually understand their role. Since Huckabee does, he deserves our votes and he deserves us to listen to him and join him in saving America.
Cheers!

Mike Huckabee is the best possible candidate to become our next president. He supports the Fair Tax, the most common-sense tax policy I have ever heard, and by far the most conservative plan of any candidate running. Huckabee is also by far the most passionate about making us energy independent in 10 years, while other candidates are saying this is impossible and that it will take 30 years. We cannot wait that long!
Gov. Huckabee balances strong social conservative values and convictions with an ability to reach across party lines on issues such as the environment. As an Arkansas resident, I saw firsthand what an effective, positive leader he was for our state, and that's why I wholeheartedly support Huck for president.

While the others are throwing stones based on half-truths or total falsehoods, or making speeches that say nothing, such as "I am for change more than you." or "I have been for change longer than you." or "I can change more than you." future President Huckabee is tossing IDEAS onto the discussion table of America for us to consider, and doing it in a most charming and humble and extremely articulate way. I have trouble believing the outright bigotry I am reading from those who seem to think that BECAUSE Gov. Huckabee is a Christian, he is unfit to be president. Yes, I am a Christian, and Yes, I am in favor of Gov. Huckabee, but NOT because he is a Christian, but because I think he is right regarding key issues for the broad middle class. I am truly sorry to hear the vehement voices of scorn against a man BECAUSE OF HIS RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. Based on the anti-Christian comments posted, please tell me exactly who is closed-minded and intolerant of other religious points of view?!?

To those who fear Huckabee (or any other candidate for that matter - but Huckabee's the one who's getting the flak) because of his religious affiliation, remember that ALL (to the best of my recollection) of our US Presidents have been men of faith - and ALL of the Christian line - which would include believers of the New Testament which includes the "wives submit" comment.
And Democrats should ESPECIALLY remember that their Patron Saint's Catholic religion was used viciously against him as a reason why JFK should NOT be elected President (for the same stupid reasons promoted by those bigots against Huckabee, i.e. the fear that he'll impose his religion on us - in JFK's case - the Pope).
So essentially what those who are making a decision about the next President based on religion, are saying is that they do not want to follow the Constitution, they do not believe that freedom of worship should apply to the President, they do not believe that equal means equal, they do not believe that one should not discriminate based on religion, gender or race.
They're essentially saying that they fear that the candidate won't honor the Constitution's freedoms - just as they refuse to.

When we think of Huckabee, we have to weigh in on the others who challenge him.
I respect John McCain but cannot ever see him representing the conservative view. He is a democrat who has the republican party beholden to him because he tells the press whatever they want to hear. With all due respect, one cannot deny that he is a shrewd and crafty politician. Remember when he got an attorney to stop the NYT reporting that he paid off a lobbyist. His question was why it was being revealed at this time??? Hardly the question. He has not been true to the Republican base and has a voting record that will match only a democrat.
The same goes for Fred Thompson's voting record though it may be a bit better than McCain's.
McCain's eternal diversion from any question that borders on his liberal record on abortion etc. is to say he supported the surge. We hardly find that effective presidents have been those in the military. And it is accepted that if a president can govern right he will have the best advisers for the job. Not every president knows everything!

Mike Huckabee tax Increase in Arkansas: This is the issue all candidates are going after him with. Yes he increased taxes. We cannot deny that. But this is Irrelevant. He inherited a messed up, corrupted Government and cleaned up the mess in Arkansas. When he Left office, people in Arkansas were better off than before, when he took office. That is the rest of the story. People overlook the net outcome. I believe he has the same vision for America. He is definitely going to inherit a mess in Washington. He is the only candidate who can clean it up.
Fred Thompson- He has done nothing during his terms in the Senate. In fact, He quit to become an actor after his people in Tennessee elected him for a 2nd term. America does not want a quitter. A quitter will never win and Winner will never Quit. Mike Huckabee is a WINNER.

A president doesn't have to know everything already. He just needs to be a good, righteous person with his heart in the right place, thinking for the people, caring for the people, and hiring the right people for government offices and supreme court judges, who will decide the ultra righteousness governing this country! Personal integrity is everything! How are we going to foresee all the situations in the future? How are we going to know all the top secrets only top officials know? We need someone who's trustworthy and who'll put people first, all people, not just the top rich and well educated ones! And when our society has righteousness, then God will bless our country and our difficulties, whether it's war, or economy will gradually become better for us. How hard for someone to see this point? I have another suspicion about all the national leaders of churches going against Huckabee. I think they're afraid of losing all the donations from rich people if there's no income tax. They're probably not true Christians even though they're labeled as leaders. The atheists or anti-church people think Huckabee gets all the support of the church leaders, while many big name church leaders are actually out there trying to sabotage Huckabee. They want Giuliani instead! What does that say? I'm so mad at them! There's this goodness within Huckabee that simply shines through for anyone who has a heart to see. He cares for the poor, what's wrong with that? Since when should Christians always back millionaires or people who grew up in super rich families only? Jesus actually told us to care more for the poor! That's the right thing to do! Republicans, wake up, if you always consider yourselves to be a party for the rich only, then you'll be condemned in the end. Just wake up!

It is time to do our part in helping Governor Huckabee get to the White House. Mike has inspired us, so we should bless him!
Lets give just $44 dollars more to help get our 44th President of the United States elected! I stated by making the first $44 dollar donation. He needs our help more than ever.
Please donate here at Governor Huckabee's website. Thanks and God Bless!:

Please, let's reject the hatred and fearmongering against Huck just because he's a Southern Baptist preacher.
Let's look at his character, look at the issues, and you see a bipartisan, appealing candidate.

I remember the first time I heard Ronald Reagan speak. It was on behalf of Barry Goldwater's run for the Presidency. It was inspiring. He understood what voters wanted from their Government. When Ronald Reagan ran for the Presidency I voted for him. Each time.
Finally, we have a candidate who reminds me of Ronald Reagan. Mike Huckabee is the best candidate. He's got more than 10 years experience as Governor. He left office with Arkansas in better shape in terms of infrastructure and education than when he assumed office. He had high approval ratings and was named as one of the top 5 Governors in the country. We have a chance for positive change by supporting Mike Huckabee.

As for the charity organizations and tax exempt status, churches that are predominantly white and those that are predominantly African American have opened their pulpits to former and current politicians of both parties. Being a pastor/priest/bishop does not disqualify a citizen from exercising the freedoms and responsibilities in The Bill of Rights. Candidates of both parties have ended speeches by mentioning God. The only thing wrong with Governor Huckabee is the Republican controllers did not pick him. I'm voting for America, not Republicans. Governor Huckabee has my vote!

It's nice to see that some people have the sense to check out the lies being spewed. It's so sad that people don't look into things and see for themselves the truth about Mike but would rather just list off the same things someone else says. That's just plain lazy. Do a little research for yourselves and I think you will find that Mike Huckabee is the best candidate for presidency.

I am sick of people disapproving of the FairTax just because of their own problems with wealth envy and general feelings of inadequacy. The FairTax can work. Excise taxes would be a great idea but with the precarious position of our manufacturing jobs, if foreign countries pull back their imports because of those penalties, we won't have any manufacturing base to make our own goods. I'm not worried about funding the federal government. It could do with some belt tightening.
The FairTax works within the confines of our current world standing. It gives the poor a real chance, and it allows the rich to *gasp* acquire more wealth. And if you think that the wealthy buy all used things, you've got another think coming. And so what if the company buys new cars and homes? They are NOT part of the process and could not be argued as such, so there would be taxes levied. This is simple. And easy to implement, as well. Just fire the IRS.
--There is a simple solution to everything.

I for one am sick of people using the religion arguement about Mike Huckabee yet it's apparently off limits for the other candidates. For all you supporters of Mitt Romney I challenge you to google "Bishops in the Mormon religion" and do your homework. Don't kid yourself for a minute that his religion isn't a huge part of who he is. I'm not saying it's bad, it just isn't any different then Mr. Huckabee. Put your fears aside and listen to the issues and the authenticity of the candidates.

I have a question for some of the posters who are objecting to the fact that Mike Huckabee is a former Baptist minister. Why is that fact objectionable and you seem to have no objection to a former Morman Bishop seeking the same office from the same party?
Posted by: Jo Tiner | January 13, 2008 10:50 AM
cary mckay,
you're so ignorant!!! why not ask a true mormon about what they believe!!! not just believing everything what you're reading... or the best attend 1 service and you'll know what they believe... so ignorant!!!

Religious people don't give a crap what I think, why should I care what they think? All I can say is - if another Religionist or extremist of any kind ends up in the White House - I'm leaving the country.

You seem to miss the point. I'm not objecting to his being a minister. If not for Hucks religious views and support from the evangalists, he would be nowhere. I'm sure plenty will say that is not so...but thats the plain and simple truth of it. I want a president who is running on qualifications to lead our country, not who is most appealing for the rightious right. The religious agenda is not what I believe America needs to be concerned about. Gays, stem cell, abortion, and Terry Shiavo are not on the top burner for most Americans. That would go for any candidate.

SHEEP-SHEEP-SHEEP-SHEEP
I can't believe what I'm reading here. It has become so simple for many of you to be so very easily swayed. All of this talk about religion and faith in a potential leader. This makes me want to throw up. What I mean is the negative side. Is it my understanding that there are many of you out there who would rather have a President of these great United States of America who is influenced by "existing" government policies and procedures or someone with morals and integrity who just so happens to be a Christian. To the individual who talks about going to Mexico, please give me your name and phone number....I'll drive you to Mexico myself. I'll even pay for the gas. It's SHEEP like you in this country that have been and continue to bring our nation down further. We need someone in the White House who is NOT afraid to speak the truth in which he believes. Maybe all of his thoughts are not perfect. But at least he's not afraid to speak to them with honesty.
I am a Christian with my beliefs and proud to be so. This country was in FACT founded with and on Christian beliefs. That's what made this country great for so many years and the reason why so many have come here to call it home. Even the parents or grandparents of many of you who now take for granted the freedoms and opportunities that you have, made the choice to come and raise their children here because of the way it was originally set up and was intended to be. Now all of you who want to change what made this country so great have come on attempting to infect the rest of us with bigot minded thoughts. That's not what your parents or grandparents had in mide for you. What could have ever gone wrong in your life to give you all such skewed visions or thoughts. I still believe in the USA and I believe in what we stand for and what is was started from. The best candidate in this race that closely parrallels what our country was based on is Mike Huckabee. He is a good honest man with a proven track record of competent abilities as Governor. Stop being SHEEP and check out his record for yourself. I DID! I did because I want to know the background of who I am voting for and supporting before I do so. If you read anything negative about Mike Huckabee, please check it out for yourself. I'm not voting for him because he is Christian like me. That just happens to be a bonus in my eyes. I'm voting for Mike Huckabee because he has experience, with a wonderful proven track record, he has not taken up the political bashing your opponent game, he offers specific solutions to significant problems we face and because he represents the qualities that this country was based on. And anyone who thinks that this is bad, please let me know also, I'll charter a bigger bus and drive you all to the Mexico line.
Mike Huckabee is getting my vote. I hope there are many less SHEEP for this Presidential Election and that you educate yourself before making this decision. The chance to make this country great again is at your fingertips. Know The Facts!

Posted by: Jake G. | January 12, 2008 5:28 PM
That's just your opinion and I disagree with it, as is my right afforded to me by the freedoms allowed in this country. Forcing your opinion on me hardly shows "religious manners".
This country was in FACT founded with and on Christian beliefs. That's what made this country great for so many years and the reason why so many have come here to call it home.

WRONG! This country was founded on the principle of religious FREEDOM, not BELIEFS. You are arguing for just what we are fighting in the Mid East. I don't want to live in a nation that rams its religious beliefs, dogma, and sharia law down my throat.

having a jesus camp prayer in on I35 highway. They babling that they are possesed. If you put a burkha on them, you swear they islamic extremists.

You people are the great "spin doctors". This country, as well as the western world for the last 2000 years has been primarily based on Christianity. No one is trying to force Christian beliefs down your throat. I'm clearly stating a FACT! Your small minded twisting of what has been clearly stated and is the fact, is a clear show of your ignorance to truth and lack of knowledge or ability to find out the truth for yourself. Next you'll be telling me that the Federal Reserve is a government body.
Get the truth my fiends.
And to you evil poet who is so sure in your convictions and yet is afraid to post your real name, it "is" the truth and also thank you for acknowledging a core belief in the "CHRISTIAN" faith in stating lying is a sin. Forgiveness is also part of Christian values and so therefore I forgive you for your ingnorance.

I am a former Democrat who became Republican because of a life conversion to pro-life values. Though I vote Republican, it still is difficult because I feel like the party is taking my position more and more for granted. We all know that as long as the Republicans do nothing to support the pro-life cause, the longer they can bank on our support.
This is a dysfunctional method for preserving the status quo. The fact that "Wall Street" Republicans hate Huckabee so much is the best indication that the change he heralds is real change.
If it were simply rhetoric, what would they have to fear?
I believe he is correct in both his assessment of the state of the GOP as well as his assessment that we need a third alternative between the nanny-state and corporate feudalism.
This is exactly the type of message that will resonate the most with voters.
As far as the anti-relgion or anti-Christian attacks on his politics are concerned, I would not worry about people who espouse such views. After all, the Democratic candidates will also play up their religious "convictions" when they start competing for the middle as well.
There may be lots of bigots in this country, but they do not carry any one state.

If Romney or any other candidate did that they would have been shot by a firing squad of the media. you certainly can pull the wool over the media's eyes."

Amen sister!!! But while we're all going Huckabee nuts, it would be wise to keep our heads and remember that Mike Huckabee is not, as George Will describes him, "cuddly."
Here are Mr. Huckabee's own stated views:
Energy independence within 10 years. Now, you tell me how that's going to happen, because Cuddly Mike certainly hasn't said how it'll work. The only way we can be energy independent in 10 years is if we stopping using energy. Completely.
Evolution - A Theory. Mr. Huckabee does not believe in science. He does not believe that we have evolved over time. He believes we were created, rather recently, by the Creator. Now, I know science is complicated - I myself was a horrible student in biology, chemistry, you name it. But I also know enough to know that evolution is not a theory. When people dismiss science, they truly frighten me.
Federal Sales Tax. Mr. Huckabee suggests a sales tax on everything, which may mean a tax of up to 30% on all purchases. He also proposes rebate checks to people who need them. Try to imagine the bureaucracy created by figuring out who gets a monthly check. Try to imagine a 30% tax on your trip to the market, or in the case of the HuffPo reader, a 30% tax on that J. Crew sweater.
Foreign Relations. Good luck with this one - I have no idea where Cuddly stands on any of the foreign policy issues of the day. I believe he's waiting for some Divine Intervention on Iraq, Iran and Pakistan.
Constitutional Amendment Banning Abortion. Mike said he would "absolutely" support this.
Ethics. I swear this is true: in his first campaign for Senate, as reported by Salon, Mike used campaign funds to pay his media consultant. No big deal, of course, every campaign has a media consultant. Do you know the name of Mike Huckabee's media consultant? Mike Huckabee. Yes, he paid himself. That's a new one for me.
I hope the national media will stop, look behind the laughter, and examine his actual views.
Or is an honest look at the record too much to ask from a media that has a crush on Huckabee?
Do not trust this snakeoil salesman. The republicans are scraoing the bottom of the barrel!!!

Capitol Offense. Mike is just an awesome, down to earth, trustworthg, caring person. He is who he is, how refreshing! I never really paid much attention to politics in the past. I have been following the campaign trail very closely this time around because I actually believe in a canidate. Mike Huckabee is that canidate. I can not believe the lies I have heard about this man. What are people afraid of? What is the media afraid of? Faux News has been the worst. According to the Fair Tax plan every household gets the pre-bate, the amount determined only by the number of people within the home. If you wish to understand better, below is the Fair Tax site with a calculator to show you how much you could save in taxes if the plan is passed. BTW, only legal residents would qualify for the pre-bate which would go a long way toward encouraging illegals to self-deport.

OK, one more time....WRRROOONG. That is a totally erroneous statement, not to mention devoid of any "facts" to back it up. The intent of the CONQUEST of the western world was primarily ECONOMIC. And many came to the Americas to escape religious persecution, not create a "Christian" nation. I repeat...the United States is NOT a CHRISTIAN NATION. It is a nation of many peoples and beliefs. To state otherwise does a disservice to those who designed the architecture of this country.

Oh yes. So much more than a campaign;
Onward, Christian Republics, marching off to vote,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
forward into battle see his banners go!
Refrain:
Onward, Christian Republics, marching off to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.
2. At the sign of triumph Satan's Dems doth flee;
on then, Christian candies, on to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.
(Refrain)
3. Like a mighty army moves the church of Huck;
brothers, we are treading where the saints have luck.
We are not divided, all one body we,
one in hope and doctrine, one in certainty.
(Refrain)
4. Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
but the church of Hucky constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never gainst that candie prevail;
we have Christ's own vote, and that cannot fail.
(Refrain)
5. Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud, and honor unto Huck the King,
this through countless ages men and angels sing.
(Refrain)

I am sooo sick of all of the headlines talking about when Romney's MUST wins and asking when he going to hang it up! He has the MOST delegates!
I am also from Iowa and see that religious bigotry is alive and well in America. Huckabee ran on being a previous minister and a Christian. Even following things here, I NEVER heard about his record as Governor (good or bad) much until after the Caucuses and into NH. Romney's ads tried to get people to look at Huckabee's record. It wouldn't have mattered how much $ he spent here, he couldn't break through the BLIND followers who would rather vote for Huck just because he was a pastor than someone with brains and ability to face all the country’s big problems. If you take away all the non-evangelicals that caucused, Romney beat Huckabee more than 2-1!! If you vote FOR Huckabee or NOT for Romney based on religion you are a bigot-- go look up the definition. Being intolerant of someone who is different, as in religion or race.
Iowa was early, unfortunately some people in following states are voting for Huckabee just because he won Iowa but as more people research him, they’ll see him for what he is. Can you really see him meeting with Foreign Leaders and being respectable?? He never answers questions straight up, doesn’t defend his record, just whines about other people ‘being dishonest about it’. HE has been dishonest about his record. He says all the taxes he raised were after “80% of the people voted for them”– NOT TRUE. Do you HUCK supporters stay open enough to scrutinize his record. Does it matter to you that he is being dishonest about his record in order to get elected? Won’t he be dishonest on the job if he is dishonest while he’s pursuing the job?
Read http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/huckabees_fiscal_record.html.
Huckabee brags about how his democratic state kept re-electing him as evidence of his doing something right– all it signifies is that he ran the state the way a Democrat would. He is NOT a fiscal conservative!! Oh, and Huckabee doesn't have the corner on the market for defending Christian values-- Romney wants God to stay in our schools and on our $, exemplifies the santity of marriage and family-- but he doesn’t force it on you like Huckabee does. Ironically, Mormons are definitely in the minority in this country, but Romney would more fairly represent ALL Americans because he doesn't USE his religion to garner support. He is running a political campaign. The leaders of the LDS church striclty discourage anything political coming over the pulpit, which is reserved for teaching about docrtine and Christ. You would NEVER go to an LDS meeting and hear someone endorsing a candidate. Its leaders encourage its members to be involved in civic matters and to think for themselves, as well as be prayerful. All you out there who think the LDS church would somehow run Romney if he were President are just ignorant. How well does Huckabee adhere to the law of keeping church and state separate??
Somebody answer me specifically how Romney is NOT a conservative?
Abortion is the one thing people are criticizing Romney for. It is important, but not as immediate an issue as Iraq, terrorism, illegal immigration, health care costs and the imminent recession that everyone is talking about. Also, if you really watch and listen to Romney explain his change it is very reasonable. He has always been opposed to abortion morally, personally. When it was theoretical, he believed government’s role in what people should do was more in line with choice. When he actually had authority as governor, he had to personally face making something into legislation, he had to go with his personal conviction. I think that’s what we expect our leaders to do. He wants Roe vs. Wade overturned, would love there to be no abortion in the country, but is not going to force that view on the whole nation. He would be President over a lot of people with differing views on it. Huckabee’s ad that he put out/didn’t put out MISLEADS people to believe that Romney is responsible for or in support of the MA healthplan allowing $50 toward abortions. Romney opposed it, it was a state court ordered mandate that he had to obey. Like Mike Huckabee touts that he ‘obeyed the law in Arkansas’ by raising taxes for education then makes some sarcastic remark about ‘I don’t know if you have to obey the law in MA…’
Which leads into the fact that Huckabee (and McCain) have both been more negative on this campaign than Romney– despite what the media keeps trying to perpetuate, even with Chris Wallace’s question on the last debate. Ridiculous. Romney has pointed out differences on their records. The ‘meanest’ thing Romney has done to Huckabee was to press him to answer his question about taxes on the debate. Huckabee has attacked Romney’s character by calling his campaign dishonest, his comments are riddled with snide, personal cracks, his early comments about the Mormon faith were very specific ideology differences that riled up evangelicals against Romney. Huckabee jabs, then takes this ‘good guy, I didn’t mean to’ stance, knowing the damage has already been done and he comes out LOOKing like the more moral man. What a bunch of crap he has been pulling. I am floored that Huckabee got anything from NH voters!
Mitt Romney brings the most breadth of knowledge, best solution oriented approach to what is facing America. He brings people from all sides to the table, gets the best information and makes successful, critical decisions. Watch Greta’s conversation with him on the Mitt Mobile to learn more about his Foreign Policy approach. Watch all 3 parts to the video. It’s a GREAT look at him. He shares his stance on terrorism and I think it would have helped a lot of people in NH who voted for McCain just because of his military/foreign policy experience. It’s curious that these clips weren’t more visible on the website during the Iowa and NH voting. Fox?? Romney is a dignified leader who can work with the international community. His experience in the Olympics may even help other world leaders respect him.
http://www.foxnews.com/video2/player06.html?0308/010308_greta_rom1&On_the_Record&Mitt%20Romney&acc&On%20the%20Record&-1&Shows&494&&&new
McCain is NOT the only one who can handle the situation in Iraq. McCain has some good character, although he seemed to relish a little too much in jabbing Romney on the debates. He can be bull-headed like Bush though. He’ll stand up to people or go against the grain, but that’s only good if he’s fighting for your exact point of view. I don’t think he would be any more effective in working with the international community than Bush has been.
In debates McCain avoids talking about what he plans to do about all the illegals already here. He focuses on a fence and securing the border only. That’s because he wants us to forget that his immigration bill really does offer a type of amnesty that won’t deter more illegals from coming. It doesn’t punish people who have broken OUR federal laws. This is just one summary of his bill:

It’s scary to see American’s voting for pastors, candidates they admire because of war experience, or because they ‘like his smile’ and ‘think he would be a comforting president’ (Obama). Do you realize that we need a strong leader?! This next President is CRUCIAL to our future. I agree that a vote for any other Republican OTHER THAN Romney is helping the Democrats. A Democrat will get America on it’s way to socialism. Europe is seeing the effects of socialism and they are starting to turn away from it and voting in conservatives.
Canadians have a different society and yet are close enough to be knowledgable spectators of our country. LISTEN to them! Don’t listen to the media or their biased commentators (know who these people work for before you listen to their stance!). Listen to individual, respectable sources.
I can see people being leary of Romney that he has had his eyes on the White House for some time. So what? Realize that every one running or who has ever run for presidnet has had his/her eyes on the White House. It is usually because they want to be in a position to make things better. Does being rich and white really mean he will not be an excellent President? I’d rather have my brilliant employer run the country than my hick co-worker who steals condiments from the break-room. (Yes, Huckabee really did steal furniture from the Governor’s mansion). Romney is wealthy, but don’t forget that he didn’t take pay for his governorship or the Olympics and he tithes 10% of his income! Does income really have any bearing on the characteristics we need as a leader– yes, he has been successful in his endeavors…
I can see Romney has a tendency to exaggerate, but it’s out of enthusiasm more than it is calculated deception. When he is called on it, he admits fault. What more can you ask for? On the other hand, Huckabee has said “oh, I don’t know anything about the Mormon faith?”, when he was a main speaker at a Baptist seminar in SLC which was designed to refute Mormon doctrine and convert Mormons. Don’t you think you need to know their doctrine if you are going to try to discuss it and refute it with them? Isn’t that kind of false statement a little more alarming and telling than Romney’s slip about seeing ‘more change in the next ten years than we’ve seen in the past century’ or whatever?
The other arguments about Romney being too perfect etc. are just absurd. I like what another writer wrote about the fact that Romney’s got all 5 sons strongly supporting him and they are a close-knit family. Watch them. That says alot about the way he has lived his life.

Polls show that people BELIEVE Romney will get the nomination, but it won’t happen in a vacuum. You have to get out there and VOTE for him!! Come on Michigan! I can’t do any more from Iowa (yet!)

You all missed the boat. Duncan Hunter is the best man for Immigration, China trade and bringing back American jobs, Guns, War plan, Abortion, no closet skeletons, all around good man. Don't take money from Special Interest so he needs donations. Freedom isn't free unless you want special interest controlling you. Everyone is a bunch of robots waiting for the media to tell you who to vote for. Keep doing the same thing, get the same results. Media picks the President now.

I think Fox News is trying to pick Fred Thompson. They have been showing reruns of the debat more times that I have ever seen them do this, and it's the debate where the felt Fred Thompson did the best.
Mike Huckabee is the only candidate I favor right now. I believe he demonstrates common sense, frugality, wit, and wisdom. I would trust our country to his leadership and assume he would draw men of integrity around him. He has my 100% support.

Shows you how easy it is to fool people Jen. Welcome to the modern republican party. A bunch of bed wetting, pro-gun, anti-abortion big spenders.
I agree that Romney is their best candidate. To bad he's Ward Cleaver!!!
Oh yeah and then there's that "GATES OF HELL GUY."

The reason Rush, Sean, Glenn, Laura, etc. don't like Huck is because the company that Romney started Bain Capital is planning to buy Clear Channel Communications. There's a conflict of interest and it comes down to MONEY, not conservative ideals, as they often squawk. I think this conflict of interest should be proclaimed everywhere because a lot of Republicans who listen to these pundits are totally confused as to why they aren't supporting Mike Huckabee.

In case anyone was interested in actual PROOF to verify that the United States was NOT founded as a "Christian Nation," here is a Treaty from 1797 signed by George Washington and John Adams (I believe those men are "Founders"):
Officially called the "Treaty of peace and friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli, of Barbary," most refer to it as simply the Treaty of Tripoli. In Article 11, it states:
" As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion;"
Is that explicit enough for you??
"as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Musselmen; and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
http://www.nobeliefs.com/Tripoli.htm
Sorry, Fundamentalists. The United States is a secular nation. This is both implicit and explicit, as in the First Amendment:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,"
Are we to believe that, though the Founders wrote this document, they intended for Christianity to be excepted from this clearly worded dictum?
One last point. How dumb does one have to be to write (as many have) that Mr. Huckabee is being criticized because "he is a Christian?"
Hello! Earth to Fundies!! ALL, as in, EVERY LAST ONE, of our Presidents have been Christian. I can go even further. ALL, as in, EVERY LAST ONE (whether Mormons are Christians or not I take no position on, but clearly Mr. Romney considers himself a Christian) of the CURRENT presidential candidates are CHRISTIANS.
Can Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, etc. make the same case that they are being unfairly criticized because they are "Christian?"
