The Swamp

by Jason George

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Throughout the day today – the last full day of campaigning before Saturday's Republican primary – Gov. Mike Huckabee has been clear about what he needs from Palmetto State voters: "We need South Carolina for a win," he's said here and at a stop earlier in Greenville.

South Carolina employment officials released stark economic data on Thursday, showing unemployment in the state jumped 6.6 percent in December to 142,800 resident. Huckabee told Carolina crowds that he had the executive experience – as opposed to the unnamed Sen. John McCain – to turn their economy around.

"I don't think there's anybody running for president who can better understand what it's like to live in a Southern state like South Carolina. I governed a state like South Carolina for 10 and a half years," he said on the campus of Wofford College.

"Washington is broken, and the question is, do you want someone who's already been there and had their chance or do you want someone who has proven on the local level that he can take on the issues and get things done and brings improvements and help to change and improve the future of those 142,000 in this state and across this nation," Huckabee asked.

Huckabee called the Bush stimulus and tax package announced today a "good start," but stressed that more needed to be done to help working families with gas prices, defaulted mortgages and energy rates.

Huckabee's on a roll now!

I heart Huckabee!

But finished with the only real way to end this problem....prayer.

He is one of us, and he walks among us. Like at the temple of thieves he says...heal yourselves.

I pray that SC will know how to pray for Hucks win so prayer will once again be the real prayer of true believers. The power of prayer will lift him up so God will hear our prayers and pray with us so sooner or later prayer won't be necessary, we'll just know that our prayers have been answered by the one that listens to our daily prayers. So then we will only have to pray oh maybe only three times a week. Unless of course you choose to pray more which is OK with me and Huck. You can choose to pray less if you wish.

But finished with the only real way to end this problem....prayer.

bill r,

Check out my Huckster post on the Swamp Homie thread on the back channel, it should explain it all..

Mike Huckabee seems to be proving that he definitely IS the one we need in the White House at this critical time.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO READ THIS.

What kind of a leader has always been successful as President?

Look at the records.

You'll find it's leaders like MIKE.

On the streets, In the family, believes in something good and rasied AMERICAN.

Why would anyone else even be considered?

Listen to MIKE, then get out and VOTE

"I'm one of you..."

If Huck will give this speech at a GLAAD conference, I'll vote for him.

I understood the moment I read it.

I really like Mike Huckabee and think he makes a lot of sense on so many issues. I'm surprised to hear his views on the confederate flag. Does he really believe that this is not a sign of racial division? I'm aware of it's renewed use during the civil rights era. I know he is certainly not in favor of any type of division. Why has this become a issue for him to support? Thank you and again, I admire Mike Huckabee.

The funny thing is that Huckabee hasn't stated his stance on the flag - whether to keep it or to replace it.

Here is what Mike Shmuckabee stated:

"You don't like people from outside the state coming and telling you how you oughta raise your kids. You don't like people coming from outside the state coming down and telling you what you want to do with your flag."

He never stated his position on whether the flag should remain or be replaced with something less controversial.

Why?

If he stated his position that the flag should remain than he would risk losing the black vote which makes up approx 30% of SC's population.

He's suck a fake!

DD: If he gave this speech at a GLAAD conference, you wouldn't respect him... you'd mock him.

Stop trivializing a single candidate on one issue like homosexual marriage. It's insane.

The president needs to be a leader with integrity and a track record of getting something done in the face of adversity. Stop the out-of-control spending, protect our country, and lower government intrusions on personal liberty and economics.

Go Huck!

in Dallas, Texas is a fairly famous institution and for a variety of reasons:

1. John F. Kennedy died there in 1963;
2. Lee Harvey Oswald died there shortly after; and,
3. Jack Ruby, who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, died there a few years later, by coincidence.

On the flip side, Parkland is also home to the second busiest maternity ward in the country with alm ost 16,000 new babies arriving each year. (That's almost 44 per day --- everyday.)

A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants.

That's 11,200 anchor babies born every year just in Dallas.

According to a Dallas Morning News article, the hospital spent $70.7 million delivering 15,938 babies in 2004 but managed to end up with almost $8 million dollars in surplus funding. Medicaid kicked in $34.5 million, Dallas County taxpayers kicked in $31.3 million and the feds tossed in another $9.5 million.

The average patient in Parkland maternity wards is 25 years old, married and giving birth to her second child.

She is also an illegal immigrant.

By law, pregnant women cannot be denied medical care based on their immigration status or ability to pay.

OK, fine. That doesn't mean they should receive better care than everyday, middle-class American citizens. But at Parkland Hospital, they do. Parkland Memorial Hospital has nine prenatal clinics.

NINE!

The Dallas Morning News article followed a Hispanic woman who was a patient at one of the clinics and pregnant with her third child --- her previous two was also born at Parkland. Her first two deliveries were free and the Mexican native was grateful because it would have cost ...

$200 to have them in Mexico.

This time, the hospital wants her to pay $10 per visit and $100 for the delivery but she was unsure if she could come up with the money. Not that it matters, the hospital won't turn her away. (I wonder why they even bother asking at this point.)

How long has this been going on? What are the long-term affects?

Well, another subject of the article was born at Parkland in 1986 shortly after her mother entered the US illegally. Now she is having her own child there as well. (That's right, she's technically a U.S. citizen.)

These women receive free prenatal care including medication, nutrition, birthing classes and child care classes. They also get freebies such as car seats, bottles, dia p ers and formula.

Most of these things are available to American citizens as well but only for low-income applicants and even then, the red tape involved is almost insurmountable.

Because these women are illegal immigrants, they do not have to provide any sort of legitimate identification or any proof of income. An American citizen would have to provide a social security number which would reveal their annual income. An illegal immigrant needs only to claim to be poor and the hospital must take them at their word.

Parkland Hospital offers indigent care to Dallas County residents who earn less than $40,000 per year (They also have to prove that they did not refuse health coverage at their current job. Yeah, the 'free' care is not so easy for Americans.)

There are about 140 patients who re ceived roughly $4 million dollars for un-reimbursed medical care. As it turns out, they did not qualify for free treatment because they resided outside of Dallas County so the hospital is going to sue them!

Illegals get it all free! But U.S. citizens who live outside of Dallas County get sued! How stupid is this?

As if that isn't annoying enough ...

Illegal immigrant patients are actually complaining about hospital staff not speaking Spanish.

In this AP story, the author speaks with a woman who is upset that she had to translate comments from the hospital staff into Spanish for her husband. The doctor was trying to explain the situation to the family and the mother was forced to translate for her husband who only spoke Spanish. This was apparently a great injustice to her.

In an attempt to create a Spanish-speaking staff, Parkland Hospital is now providing incentives in the form of extra pay for applicants who speak Spanish. Additionally, medical students at the University of Texas Southwestern, for whic h Parkland Hospital is the training facility, will now have a Spanish language requirement added to their already jammed-packed curriculum. No other school in the country boasts such a ridiculous multi-semester (multicultural) requirement.

(Sorry for the length, but I think this needs wide circulation, particularly to our 'employees' in Congress.)

Remember that this is only ONE hospital in Dallas , Texas. There must be many more hospitals across our country that also have to deal with this.

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERY U.S. CITIZEN YOU KNOW.

It's not about the Confederate flag as a symbol...

Pat Carlucci brings up an important point regarding the question of why Huckabee would support the Confederate flag. Fact is, he doesn't support it, nor has he given an opinion on whether it is a racial symbol or a symbol of Southern heritage. What he has said is essentially that it is a matter for South Carolina's citizens to take up with their own government.

That has been the positon of the last three presidents -- twenty years now -- and all the governors who've sat under that flag -- originally hoist by a Democrat.

I personally do not view the Confederate flag as a racist symbol. However, I respect the fact that many people do. If some cynical politicians didn't need it for a political issue, they would have petitioned their government long ago to have it removed. As it is now, it stands over a Confederate memorial.... Who has proposed that that memorial be bulldozed? Nobody yet.

Liberals need it for a political issue. Conservatives for the most part see it as a state issue. And yes, there are racists who consider it their symbol... but in my time in Carolina, I never met one. For which I am very grateful.

Beyond the stereotypes of rednecks with the stars & bars emblazoned on their pickup trucks, lies the question of what each of us considers offensive -- the Gay Pride rainbow for straight people, the cross for Christophobes, the star & crecent for Islamophobes... the list could go on.

Unless it can be shown that the Confederate flag (or any of those other symbols) are indeed implements of incitement, the federal government doesn't have a role.

Whatever else Huckabee may be on other issues, he's right on this one. So to all those who are so incensed over the flag, I'd suggest you work hard to fund a "ban the flag" campaign and get the state legislature to remove it.

Just remember, when the Democrats need something to trot out to prove that Republicans are a bunch of meanies, they won't have that symbol to make an issue of.

Hey Steve W:

Check your sources! Most of them are references of peoples STATEMENTS, not facts. Or... maybe YOU are a liberal posing as a Republican wannabee? Hmm...

Hey, I here Obama and Hillgirl are looking for a few good (wo)men?

What strikes me as being the most important statement for change is Huckabee's assertion that “Washington is broken.” It is impossible to enact meaningful change in any area until you are stone cold sober about the current reality. That statement is an indication that Huckabee knows how change works. Lots of candidates want or desire change. I’m voting for the candidate that actually understands how to do it.

Huck Fan, No, I'm mocking him now because he's saying he's one of "us", but we know that "us" has limitations. He's all about "government intrusions on personal liberty" and would work to make the US government a new Christian version of sharia law. You pick your issues, and I'll pick mine.

Will the Whitehouse still be called the Whitehouse if Huck wins or will it be the Temple of America?

why doesn't the media focus on the fact that hillary and crew are courting the Homosexual activist vote, or the secular humanist/atheist vote or that she is on the same page as the ACLU which yestrday came out saying that sex in a PUBLIC bathroom is a matter of right to privacy???what a bunch of slimy sleazebags!!!! ..wake up america!! Instead the media concentrates on how BAD huckabee is for courting the "evangelical" vote...like we are now the outsiders and the perverts are the historic mainstream now...and unfortunately ...I think we letting them take over because we allowed people to buy into their lie of diversity etc...perversity IS NOT EQUAL TO diversity. They are PROUD of their "beliefs" and activities . I wonder where this train is headed sometimes.

My favorite question is to ask someone whether they would rather be considered smart or honest. You can tell a man's character from his response.

From the comments here and in other columns, it is obvious that the Romney supporters are more interested in being considered smart, while the Huckabee supporters would rather be considered honest.

The irony is that it is always the ones who want to be considered honest who turn out to be smart.

John McCain is a good man who will make a great Secretary of State or UN ambassador, but I pray voters will remember
he is liberal enough that John Kerry asked him to be his running mate, he helped obstruct the appointment of conservative judges, the Bush tax cuts and championed a reform of election law that was largely declared unconstitutional.

There is a last minute attempt to put Huckabee over the edge by Giuliani supporters in order to stop any McCain momentum.

thepoliticalpost.wordpress.com/2008/01/18/last-minute-attempt-to-block-mccain-win-in-sc-by-giuliani-supporters/

Huckabee's values most closely resemble the best of the traditional values of America. Inferring that Huckabee's devotion to Christ would result in an imposition of a Shariah type law, is borderline hysteria or disingenuous exaggeration. Huckabee's values are the traditional American values that have been predominate in the past and hopefully will remain a large part of this country's culture in the future.

"yestrday came out saying that sex in a PUBLIC bathroom is a matter of right to privacy???"

I'm sure Larry Craig is rejoicing...

I think this is a good candidate. Mike has great policy plans and a solid direction. that is more than than any of the other candidates that have just gone along with the same old, lower taxes and we the big government will take care or all your problems speeches. I'm sick of promises with no clear plan. Name me one other candidate that has step by step detailed plans like mike. Because I haven't seen it on any of there sites. There is no way any of the old style hard headed consecrative Republicans can beat the poisoning Democrats. I think Mike is a great choice. who else researches great ideas like the fair tax, that only corrupt politicians would oppose without even reading. I'm an atheist and I support Mike Huckabee because of his policies for the country.

Go Huckabee!

I stand amazed in the presence of so many otherwise well-meaning, thinking Republicans and other conservatives. Why is it that all to often we find ourselves repeating like trained parrots what the political pundits and talking heads say… whether it is backed up by fact or not.

You can always identify these people because they continue to spread the half-truths, innuendos, and often outright falsehoods that have been pushed forward by those who have their own agenda. Both Mike Huckabee and John McCain have been victims of this kind of VERY un-Reaganlike politics. In fact it is more like the Clintonesqe politics of destruction and character assassination. You can tell the TRUE Reagan Republicans by those who trash and malign other Republicans, and those who simply try to place forward issues and policy initiatives to debate and discuss.

I encourage all thinking Republicans to stop listening to the politics of destruction. Listen to each of the candidates in their own words as to what they believe… not someone’s INTERPRETATION of what they said or believed.

I was totally unimpressed with Mike Huckabee for instance because of what the Republican establishment (who are desperate to hold on to power), and a variety of pundits and talking heads of who many admittedly have a horse in the race. But then I noticed who was all endorsing him (and it is not just Chuck Norris). Some pretty big name very conservative and well respected Republicans. So I decided I would investigate for myself.

What I found out is that there was an all out attack from the establishment to discredit and eliminate Mike Huckabee. There was large amounts of money being poured in to organizations like “The Club For Growth” by supporters of Mitt Romney. Which called in to question in my mind whether they were reporting the WHOLE truth or the slanted version designed to influence instead of inform.

What I discovered, as will you if you honestly look at Mike Huckabee’s ACTUAL record and the FACTS surrounding his VERY successful 10 1/2 year Governorship of AR, you find a VERY committed and solid Reagan Republican. One with a consistent record and stand on the issues we all care about… and not just in an election year.

Take the time to discover what the TRUTH is about Mike Huckabee. See what he is ACTUALLY saying and doing. Find out for yourself why he was overwhelming re-elected as Governor. Find out how he ACTUALLY plans to deal with the Economy and Jobs. See for yourself what his view is on the Military and the war in Iraq. Understand that he is virtually the only Republican running who has always stood on the side of Life, and of Traditional Marriage. Learn the amazing and exciting prospect of a Fair Tax system. You might just be shocked and pleased at what his REAL position is on the subject of illegal immigration and the borders. On education, the Veterans Bill of Rights,
real energy independence, healthcare, Strong-Conservative-Strict Constructionist Judges, and yes… how truly adept and equipped he is on Foreign policy and affairs.

Now I know that there will be those who immediately attack what I have written with the same un-republican Clintonesqe rhetoric. But now we all know that they are just parrots speaking what someone else told them to speak and think.

Mike Huckabee…. restoring the Nation and the Party of Lincoln back… Of the People, By the People, and For the People.

Inferring that Huckabee's devotion to Christ would result in an imposition of a Shariah type law, is borderline hysteria or disingenuous exaggeration.
Posted by: PiRSquared | January 18, 2008 10:48 PM

HELLLLOO. He flat out said he wants to amend the Constitution to reflect the word of God. He also believes women should stay home and obey their husbands. Sounds pretty Sharia-like to me. I think the "hysteria" is well-founded.

DD, the constitution has been amended 27 times including doing away with slavery, giving free speech, womens right to vote, etc etc. All Mike was saying is that he would be in favour of marriage and human life amendments. Presidents can't amend the constitution, it has to go through due process. As for Mike believing that a woman should stay at home and obey their husbands, do some research on Mike's wife and I think you will find this is not the case. You have nothing to be scared of.

I refuse to vote for anyone who invokes faith into the political arena and carries a bible and quotes scriptures. And, I might add, Huckabee was no better as a governor of Arkansas than Bill Clinton. Their education system is still at the bottom - 49-50 of our fifty states. I am so tired of southerners being elected to the presidency. Does this man not realize that all of his fellow citizens are not Evangelical/born-again Christians? That it is insulting to keep on harping on God, faith, etc. I hope Mr. Huckabee has no skeletons in his closet as has been the case with many politicians who brand themselves as "Mr. Clean." In closing, I am a registered Republican who now consider herself a "Lou Dobbs Independent." Go Lou!

If you want a reason not to vote for Huck, see Tim
at 10:06

The constitution has been changed...yes...but not to be closer to Gods word.

DD:
I am assuming you also have a set of standards/absolutes that you believe should apply to society (i.e. murder is unacceptable, etc.) Does this make you a proponent of Shariah like law? Mike Huckabee's standards are influenced by a Judeo-Christian world view, a world view that would closely mirror the world view of the majority of the "founding" fathers and contributors to the Constitution.

Mike Huckabee is our choice to be President; and, we'll support him over the other candidates. As with Reagan and Bush II, Huckabee is being significantly underestimated by everyone. This will become evident as each primary occurs. Huckabee's support will continue to build, even as the major establishment media and political control groups try to "contain" him. Let's hope he gets Secret Service protection as soon as possible. The "best" future of the United States lies with Mike Huckabee at this point in history.

Mike Huckabee's standards are influenced by a Judeo-Christian world view, a world view that would closely mirror the world view of the majority of the "founding" fathers and contributors to the Constitution.
Posted by: PiRSquared | January 19, 2008 10:48 AM

Then why does Huckabee need to change the Constitution? Why not just leave it as it is? Doesn't Judeo-Christian views also call for stoning adulterers and recalcitrant children to death? (Leviticus) How will that work with the human life amendment? There are just too many conflicts, interpretations, and abuses in the dogma of Christianity, which is why I no longer consider myself one. I'll just stick with the Love Thy Neighbor bit.

DD:
The constitution provides for the Legislature to start the amendment process. Of course, the President may exert his influence towards that goal.
Regarding the Levitical laws and associated punishments, they are addressed in detail by Christian commentaries. I encourage you to keep an open mind and heart. Best Regards...
