Huckabee: Romney can dish it out but can't take it: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Rick Pearson

NASHUA, N.H.—Republican Iowa caucuses winner Mike Huckabee says he's surprised that rival Mitt Romney is showing a streak of being thin-skinned after weeks in which Romney ran critical TV ads against him and Sen. John McCain of Arizona in the early nominating states.

Citing the Saturday night debate of the GOP contenders, Huckabee told CNN's "Late Edition" that "every time John McCain or Fred Thompson or even when I said something about (Romney's) record, he immediately bristled and said, 'Well, we don't need a personal attack.'"

In Iowa, Huckabee said Romney "spent millions of dollars specifically targeting me in television ads, radio ads, and filling up mailboxes with negative attack ads, misrepresenting my record on a number of things. And when asked, was it a negative attack, he said, oh no, it is not personal, it is just a policy difference."

"But if someone brings up the fact that he has had major changes in his position on the Second Amendment, or on the sanctity of life, or on taxes, or on same-sex marriage, or any number of issues, then it's a personal attack," Huckabee said.

Huckabee said Romney's response about personal attacks "just didn't come across as authentic at all" and said the debate overall "was not a good night" for Romney, who finished second behind Huckabee in Iowa.

The former Arkansas governor, himself, has been accused by critics of having a thin-skin toward criticism during his days in Little Rock but has yet to show such a tendency in a big way on the national campaign trail.

Despite the caucus victory last Thursday, Huckabee hasn't seen much of a bounce in the polls leading up to New Hampshire's kickoff primaries on Tuesday. Still, the former Arkansas governor contends he's seeing momentum at his rallies.

"And these weren't people just coming in to kick the tires," Huckabee said. "These were people with checkbook in hand, ready to buy the car."

Huckabee said he expects to surprise some people on Tuesday but refused to make a prediction. Instead, Huckabee said he expects to finish "better than a lot of people ever thought we would," especially those who had written off his campaigning in New Hampshire a month ago.

Credibility is THE issue; The Change we want is to believe our political leaders.

What confounds the solution to most of America’s toughest problems is the US governments’ utter loss of credibility. When anyone in power speaks you just can’t believe them because again and again we have been tricked. The reason everyone is turning on Mitt is not just the Flipping, it’s because he lacks credibility across the board. If somehow he could beat any Democrat, I simply can stand the idea or another 4 years of dishonesty. America can’t stand this. Do you think he will get more honest once elected? Our world wide prestige took a huge hit from this when with the events of 911 we should have had a bank of goodwill. Mitt simply is not authentic. He is fabricated. Last night he even said he never claimed that McCain wanted Amnesty. Does he think we are suckers? John McCain and the other are authentic. What separates McCain from the others is experience and a demonstration of courage under fire.

NH won’t be bought. Return credibility to our government. Vote McCain with me on January 8th.

Why was it a gang attack on Romney. He came across as the only man qualified to run the country. The other candidates appeared to react on emotions. Romney is a threat to the other candidates and they have anger towards him. The NH Union Leader printed an article about the obvious enmity towards Romney of the other candidates. Romney did have a landslide victory in the Wyoming caucuses on Saturday.

If the only qualification of the President was to whine about his detractors and spit out funny one liners, then Huck would be our man.

However, he is clueless about foreign policy, unclear about illegal immigrants and promotes a confiscatory regressive sales tax, which would only benefit the wealthy.

Clearly, when it comes to matters of substance,he is very very thin.

By the way, why is he not draping himself in religion in New Hampshire? Did he just flip-flop?

Huckabee is right. Romney is as serious a breaker of the eleventh commandment as Bill Clinton is of the seventh. But politely point out the fact that he's repeatedly lied and switched almost every position and opinion and he and his Republican Elite mass media nannies jump and cry foul. He really needs to man up.

Easy Hucklebee,be nice to Mitty or he'll take his millions and "Run" to France!!!!!!!!!

Lets make the right choice for America!

Mccain and Mike Huckabee are the best choices.

As for me I''m with Huckabee 100% He is righ ton with all of the issues facing America. Just research him and listen to his views. You will love Mike.

I agree with JD Adler, Romney showed that he had a real mastery of the all issues and was able to give intelligent answers to difficult questions. Despite being ganged up on Romney came out on top. Huckabee seems to only give one liners and platitudes. The only other candidate that had intelligent answers to questions was Major Giuliani.

When you're filling your car with $3 gas and buying some $2.65 a dozen eggs, remember who is running on stopping deficit spending. The war for oil is what caused prices for anything that eats grain to skyrocket. When THOSE prices rise, the fresh fruit seller raises his prices again, now you have some nice $5 a pound grapes in the market. Laugh all you want, it's YOUR money being spent. YOU'RE the one going to pay $250 a week for groceries. Still think Ron Paul sounds like a bad idea? He's the ONLY candidate, Republican or Democrat that is running on reducing your cost of living. Maybe you have plenty money. Me, I'm not so rich.

Fred Thompson is the only trustworthy candidate of the entire bunch.

Where the others are offering pipedreams and generalities Fred is putting out solutions that are implementable and that will actually work as designed.

The man has qualifications and experience far above any other and in the year 2016 the next candidates who run will be asked, "yeah, but is he Thompsonesque??"

Did I really juat hear Tom call Huckabee a flip floper? In comparison to Romney he is as steady as they come. Romney has switched his views on many major issues. (Abortion,Same-Sex marrige, The Second amendment, and many more.) And if you want to talk about religion, lets talk about Romney. He was asked about his faith and he said that it would not have any effect on his decisions. Isn't faith one of the most important parts of a person's life? If he claims the Morman faith, he should base his decisions on it, not just claim to have faith and then say it wont affect him just so he doesnt lose votes. Tom,if you want a wishy-washy president that can't make up his mind on anything Romney is your man. But if you want a president that will make a difference in this country then Huckabee is the way to go.

Guess what's wafting around the political ether re. the Republican slate of candies?

Something I predicted last summer.

We may not yet even know the name of the final choice for Prez.

The RNC is going into panic mode over this ship of fools. They may need to draft a white knight to rescue them.

Jeb Bush anyone?

Bravo Tom!!! Huckabee is a walking canard. A prevaricator. A snake oil salesman. This is not a nice guy and certainly not a capable leader. Then again if you thin the world is flat, he might just be your man.

I'm voting for Obama!!!

Romney must drive his family crazy with his knuckle headed thinking and verbal diarea.

With all the super-heated rhetoric going around here, anybody who didn't know better would think these are opposing candidates in a general election, not party-mates vying to be their party's candidate.

Just remember everyone, that whoever ends up being the party's candidate, they'll need us to get our poop in a group and support them. Don't drink the poison today; whoever your guy is, he only has a 1 in 5 chance of being "the" guy.

When I see the people on this board defending Mitt Romney it just makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Mitt Romney is playing the American people, go and check his record, Romney flat out lies. He changes his positions on serious issues, who is to say he won't change his positions again. I live in Massachusetts and I can tell you that Mitt Romney will say anything to get elected,he will be anything you want him to be. Americans DO NOT TRUST MITT, He is dangerous and is putting on an act!!

Indeed, apart from the "I'm gonna hit you, because you hit me" mentality, Mort Kondracke observed that Huckabee's apparently the only one who's tuning in the increasing apprehension about what's happening to the economy (recession, stagflation looming). Huck's FairTax assists business (at all levels, but particularly small business), it gets the government out of family paychecks and stops the "business as usual" mentality of gaming the tax code by lobbyists and politicians. (This is the self-same tax code that establishes a privileged class - bankers, who collect interest on credit cards because the money's taken from paychecks; super-rich, who - like Romney - engineer offshore holdings to the letter of loopholes, if not to the spirit, so-called, of the tax code).

Hey Jordan,
Did you just "hear" me call Huckabee a flip-flopper? I suspect you used the word "hear" figuratively (I have no problem with that), but Huckabee called his opponent a liar when he used the word "saw" figuratively. Would he call you a liar too?

By the way, I did not call him a flip-flopper. I was "just asking."

Add sissy to phoney....
...yes you get a Romney!

Fact is, I and almost every other republican that I know simply will not vote for McCain, and if I am presented with the choice of Huckabee I will probably leave America (ok that part wasn't true).

My point is that if John McCain or Mike Huckabee are nominated they will not win. Its as simple as that.

Every person has a breaking point - that point where they go from "I guess he will have to do", or "at least he's better than..." to "I cannot, in good conscience vote for a person who has done so much to damage the cause I believe in."

Mike Huckabee is way over that line (in fact, I would probably donate a token dollar to Hillary or Barack just to show my disdain).

John McCain isn't so much, but I would definitely place my vote for a meaningless third party or perhaps a "mickey mouse" just to keep my grandma happy.

Why am I bothering to write about it? Well perhaps a couple of NH voters are looking at this and are thinking "Hey, I like McCain, I'll bet if he wins NH he might go all the way." I'm here to tell you that I have voted in every election since I turned 18, and (obviously) I get involved in doing what I feel is my moral obligation. There are many people out there like me. We will make damn sure your candidate (if McCain or Huckabee) will not win in the end.

I'm not trying to bash anyone. I understand that there are people out there who are die-hards for every candidate. Those who will stand by even if they know that their vote is being wasted (like so many Ron Paul supporters (which I may join if McCain is nominated, not Huckabee, remember, I go 360 if he gets nominated)) I am just saying that if you are sitting on the fence about these two candidates, you should think about so many of us who you will loose if they are nominated.

Consider your chances of victory, especially since the democrats are mustering such unprecedented amounts of support. Do you want to have a candidate that many will not support, or worse, that part of your own party will fight against. I clearly remember in 2004 when DEMOCRAT Zell Miller got up to support Bush. We will never win if that happens to us, and it will, I guarantee if Huckabee get the nod, and probably even if McCain gets it.

Don't take my word for it though. You found this comment, there are tons more like it (only thankfully not as long).

Romney would make a bad President. He is not trustworthy. Huckabee would make a better President. I feel he would be more honest than Romney.

CLINTON IS NOT INEVITABLE - JUST OVER RATED WITH A POPULAR LAST NAME!

Romney is a flip flopping flake, I just found out that he has stock in all of the companies that are major promoters of homosexual rights & abortions, he is not going to do anything to these companies or the procedures but try to implement things that would advance them another to advance his portfolio an example of how eloquent speaking politicians are embedded within Wall Street! HE IS ANOTHER WALL STREET CANDIDATE! I can not wait for romney to get out of the race. i bet he will go back to hiring illegals to work in his yard. check more out about him at www.massresistance.org he is the biggest flake since kellogs! And as for Romney religion if he knew that it did not include black people in leadership positions, why would he join that religion? He is pandering and changing info what ever he needs to get voted in… he is worse than a flip flopper he is a deceiver…

all this rhetoric is follishnes and an intent denial to dismiss truth. The Demo-wacks have had control over congress for 2 years now and have done NOTHING but fund pork barrel projects and have not come close to making any kind of real progress that the promised their poor demo-wack supporters. There credibility is SHOT! and as for Huckabee... People fear that he will win, which he is... At this point I will vote for anybody other than a Demowack. i am so frustrated that I have changed party position and will vote Repub this year.I am so proud of Huckabee i do not know what to do. He is a man of principle and he surely just sealed the deal with my vote. He will win and big he will, and while the pundits try to demise him, or his other political rivals try to make him look bad. They may want to look at the mirror at themselves. You got flip flopping mitt, dead fred who makes me sleepy everytime I look at the him and his saddle bags around his eyes, pimped out guiliani , small brain mccain, and “paul is crazy and deranged”! And as for the Dems: you got Hell-ary that have sold her soul to the left party lobbyist in america, and you got chronic smoking Obama? which neither one has ANY experience in foreign policy. If it was not for Hell-ary having bill clinton last name, she would not even be known. Huckabee is the sure winner and will win big.

The focus group of "undecided voters" on FOX after Sunday's debate thought Mitt Romney did the best. Romney is indeed a smooth speaker with a good debate style, but he is a sophist, more interested in winning the argument than in finding the truth. Those who have been paying attention to the campaign understand why virtually all the other candidates dislike him - he is inauthentic. The very ease with which he suddenly became the candidate of "change" after Obama beat Hillary last week is a testimony to that. As Mike Huckabee said, when you substitute a half-truth for the whole truth, you are not being honorable. Mike Huckabee is the best candidate, and the most likely to beat Obama in the general election.

Who wants a Huckabee first family whose son David hanged a sick animal? AS a BOY SCOUT no less!!! Yuck. Anyway, Huck keeps his minister years a complete mystery, thereby avoiding criticism. At least Romney attempts to defend himself...Huck is a real unknown. We only have what he says about himself.

Mike Huckabee for President of the United States! You bet! Senator John McCain would make an excellent Vice-President and if I were Mike Huckabee, I would appoint Dr. Ron Paul as an economic advisor. When former Governor Huckabee is elected to the highest office in the land, he should appoint Rudy Giuliani as his Attorney General, Gingrich as Secretary of State. If McCain doesn't want the V.P. position, then Huck should offer him the Secretary of Defense. Let us get real folks! There can be no Obama in the oval office and we don't need any Clintonesque foreign policy and a "Nanny State" form of government.

Who would want the Huckabee's to be our First Family with a son (David) who, while in the Boy Scouts, hanged a sick dog. Yes, he was fired from his Boy Scout job...but what does it say about his parents? So Romney tied his dog to the roof of his car on his drive to Canada...is that creepy or what?
I'll probably vote for McCain. His record is out there for everyone to see. Secretive ministers never look good to me.

Vote for the Fair Tax-Vote for Mike Huckabee the progressive conservative.

Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should try this funny (but it actually happened) column:
http://goupstate.us/index.php/lanefiller/2007/11/02/title_14

I'm independent and waiting for the dust to clear to choose a candidate. If Huckabee wins, I've already decided though...I'm going democrat. There's no way I would vote for him even if you paid me.

Mike Huckabee is my first choice because I like his stand on the issues and his support for the Fair Tax. But, if I had to commit to a second choice - it would be McCain. If the only choice was Romney, I'd vote Democrat. There's no way I'd vote for him, not even if you paid me.
