Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) this morning endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president, saying he thinks the Illinois Democrat is the candidate with the best chance of improving the country's global standing.
Leahy, a six-term veteran and a longstanding opponent of the war in Iraq, said that he admires fellow Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York and former colleague John Edwards of North Carolina but that he thinks Obama is better able to "express America's values" to the world.
"I believe many around the world have lost respect for America," Leahy said. "We can restore that respect, but we need a president who can reintroduce America to the world."
Drawing a not-so-subtle parallel to contestants in the 1960 Democratic primary, Leahy said that, as a college student, he supported John F. Kennedy over Lyndon Johnson.
"Nobody doubted the great experience of Lyndon Johnson," he said. "But I never questioned my commitment."

This is excellent news for the Barack Obama campaign. Another endorsement from an individual that knows the game inside Washington. More and more of these these people are consistently expressing their belief that Barack Obama is the candidate that can accomplish true change.

In this global society, the country that will lead will be the country that respect people talent, and natuarl abilities. By electing Obama America would basicaly telling the world that "we are ready to lead. We are ready to set the standards."

'Improving the countries global standing?'
This term is puzzling and you always hear it from the looney left.
So if an American President doesn't defend his/hers nation, our global standing will improve?
Is that why our 'global standing' was supposedly better when B.J. Clinton was letting terrorists attack us at home and abroad and he did nothing?
Just keep our country safe and forget the falsity of 'global standing'...the terrorists don't care what our standing is.

"CONGRESSIONAL JUSTICE OFFICER SPEAKS"
I LOVE MY PATRICK LEAHY, BUT I HAVE TO SAY, ONLY IF HE READS THE CONSTITUTION AND HOLDS HIS CONGRESS TO THE LETTER OF THE LAW.
NO BACKDOOR UNCONSTITUTIONAL OVERSIGHT DEALS WITH THE COMMON CRIMINAL EVEN IF HE OR SHE WAS VOTED OR APPOINTED TO THE PRESIDENCY OF THIS COUNTRY.
AND THE PREAMBLE
AND THE 22ND AMENDMENT
AND THE 4TH AMENDMENT
AND THE 14TH AMENDMENT TO PUT IN HIS POCKET SO THAT KARL ROVE DOESN'T STEAL IT FROM HIM AT HIS NEXT CSPAN TAPING.
IMPEACHMENT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN AMERICA.
IMPEACHMENT IS THE KEY TO OUR ECONOMIC WAY IN LIFE.
IMPEACHMENT IS THE KEY TO CONSTITUTIONAL LAW.
IMPEACHMENT IS THE KEY TO TRUE "CONGRESSIONAL CHURN" IN AMERICA.
HUH CHERTOF!

I am a Canadian, watching with interest your Election process. I must agree with your Senator Leahy. Obama has ignited interest and talk of a change in American Politics. EVERYONE is talking. Mrs. Clinton is a great Lady, but she, to the World represents Americas arrogance. (sorry!, but true) Obama has a humble, intelligent, elegance, that speaks volumes to the World. The World sees America as a Christian White Country who feels they can step into others business whenever they please. THAT is not good. I have travelled with American Friends who wear MY Canadian Flag pins to disguise themselves. THAT is sad. Have courage my American Friends, you may be on the cusp of something GREAT! Good luck...

Pat Leahy also known as Senator Depends for leaking classified information while on the Intelligence Committee is a space cadet. He is stuck on stupid period. He won't help Obama or America to get good constitutional judges on the Supreme Cort or at the Applellate or District level courthouses.
This guy stacks right up there with fellow Vermonters Jumpin Jim Jeffords, Howard Screamin Dean, and Bernie Socialist Sanders. There's something in the water in Vermont. He's a buddy Of I'm Arlen RINO Specter and I can do what I want to matter what you say President Bush.

The President doesn't work for "the World." He works for the United States of America.

I love Canadians who speak on behalf of the world. I thought Bush was arrogance. Clinton was cool. Huh. Maybe your idea of arrogance is in response to an assertive determined female. The world perceives the US a Christian nation. I guess electing a Christian will somehow change the picture drastically. Skin color changes everything-not.

He also isn't the "police" of the world. And shouldn't go off starting wars that don't affect the U.S.
And Paulo, the Clinton administration convicted the men who bombed the WTC the first time. Where's the guy that hit it with airplanes?

The United States should speak softly and carry a big steak (the US Military) just as the great Teddy Roosevelt said.
The military must be strong enough to do what it must to protect US citizens and protect it from threats from abroad.
It must not wait for approval of the UN or "The World" to do that.
To say that Al Qaeda isn't a real threat is to ignore reality.

Jeff,
Put down the crackpipe and slowly back away...Who said al-Qaeda is not a threat?

A big steak? Feeding the world is a lofty goal, but I don't think that's what TR had in mind.

Yep, it's too bad Bush decided to put going after AQ on the back burner in order to into Iraq.
Now Osama and his friends are all safe and secure in Pakistan under the explicit protection of our so called "ally" Musharraf.

Cathy,
Since you are a Canadian who thinks America is misguided, could you share with us your views on Canada's Human Rights Commission, you know, the government body now acting like left-wing McCarthyites, dragging publishers and others before them to answer for writing and producing works that offend others? Please explain that one.
