Lights go out on Obama, but he keeps talking: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Michael Martinez

PAHRUMP, Nev. – Where was Barack Obama when the lights went out?

In “The Shark Tank.”

That’s the name of the gymnasium of Rosemary Clarke Middle School in a rural town about an hour’s drive outside of Las Vegas. The school’s mascot is a smiling, strutting shark.

Fifty minutes into his last stump speech of the day, the lights suddenly failed, and Obama’s microphone went dead for five minutes Sunday night.

Only two stadium-style lights at the back of the gym illuminated the stage on which Obama was speaking, surrounded by about 800 people.

That didn’t stop Obama from answering – and his audience from asking – tough questions. His microphone began working after five minutes, but all lighting except the two floodlights remained powerless for the last 15 minutes of the speech.

“I hate to put you on the spot like this,” said one man who appeared in his 60s and was apparently among voters still undecided about for whom to vote in Saturday’s Nevada caucuses, “but I haven’t heard any of the candidates talk about federally funding stem cell research.”

“That’s an easy one. I’m for it,” Obama said. “Look our economy is going to depend on how long we’re going to stay on the cutting edge of science.”

That made for the last question of the hour-long rally.

“You have been a terrific audience – even when it got dark,” Obama said.

Ya gotta love Obama. We should elect this man president!

I do not find Obama to be the best choice for the President of the United States. I do not see American corporations giving the title of CEO to the workers on the bottom of the ladder. Obama has no experience. I am from Illinois and do not support him. I am voting for John Edwards.

Kathleen,

How could you be for Edwards if experience matters? Makes no sense.

What, no charges that someone pulled the plug on Obama because of his race? LOL

We all have experience with experienced leadership whose campaign mantra is, "The Presidency is no place for on the job training!" Do we want to go down that road again? That road led us to Vietnam, Iraq and an economy that is on the verge of busted for most Americans. They have been experienced only in the art of gathering big money to get elected.

We are supporting Hillary because she is the best overall.

Javier-
The only people still inappropriately injecting the topic of race into this campaign are people like you who, apparently thinking themselves funny, casually try to either paint Obama as an Angry Black Man or his opponents as White Trash Racists.

Nobody's thinking about it but you. So if you're gonna complain about the race card being thrown, STOP THROWING IT!

This presidential race is all about compitance. It is obvious the current president has absolutely ZERO compitence, so whoever is elected at the end of this year should have the most compitence. Obama seems to be the candidate who is most in touch with his constituents, and the most compitent, so he should handedly win the presidency!

I think most companies would benefit from having a CEO from the "bottom rung" of the ladder, Kathleen. Most CEO's are so out of touch with real workers it is pathetic! Same is true with politics. Most are rich men who grew up in wealthy families - the top 1% of the population. What does a rich man REALLY know about many of the difficulties facing working americans??

Go OBAMA!!

i think what all of you think barack has "got" is just a lot of charisma. the guy is inexperienced, has skipped out on a ton of votes, and his "biggest" accomplishment in congress has been making it so senators can't sit down with lobbyists. So What?

Women are way overdue recognition for their brains and accomplishments. GO HILLARY!

Should I be the one to point out that the word competence was not spelled correctly in a previous post?

There's a metaphor here somewhere...

I think the biggest thing wrong with this country is the influence peddling by the lobbys. Obama doesnt take money from them, Clinton not only does but she takes the most of any democrat. How can we trust her to look out for our interest when she is be holden to special interest?

I've remained neutral for a while in this campaign, waiting to see how the candidates would run their respective campaigns. Honestly, I've been waiting for Obama to go negative for a while now. But surprisingly, despite intense pressure to do so, he hasn't. Its made me look into his background experiences and I've come away thinking that he is more than qualifed to be this country's cheif executive. In fact, I think he has more favorable experience than any of the candidates due to his work as a community organizer. In order to do that job, you have to care about people, and you have to be selfless. Note that he declined lucrative firm jobs to be a public servant. That shows me that Obama is principled and has the experience that counts when it comes to doing what's best for your country, not your career.

Unlike other candidate who tout experience gained vicariously through their spouse. If I need heart surgery, I'm not going to the person who has 30 years of experience being a cardiologist's wife.

Also, I think Obama simply has the HONSETY, AUTHENTICITY, and VISION to lead our country. His foreign policy judgment has been consistently sound, and if nothing else, he is willing to listen to sound advice - he has had numerous discussions with Collin Powell, who helped formulate his foreign policy platform. Also his stance on the economy is overwhelming sound. Even his healthcare policy is more in tune with America's vision for democracy - not forcing the American people to have health insurance through some government mandate, but rather making it cheaper so American's can afford it. That's why independents like myself like him. He's always forward thinking, yet in tune with the American people.

I've concluded that some candidates understand politics. But Obama understands America.

HILLARY CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT!!!

Brian made a posted and used both "compitance' and "compitence". Thank goodness HE isn't running for President - as it appears he doesn't have much COMPETENCE at all!

Wow, Obama talking in the dark? that is so awesome! I suppose that this is evidence of how well prepared he is to run the most complex global economy (yeah right!). Perhaps that can also compensate for his lack of substance and sudden attitude of confidence in the race. This will be a big flop. I am also very concerned that Mr. Obama's platform for every imaginable problem (healthcare, unemployment, etc...) is a fairy tale.

Look, this guy is getting terrific coverage and scrutiny. Nobody can find anything on him, because he's not done anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

America (and Democratic party voters), wake up and come out of the shadows. We don't need an orator for president. We need a President that can manage our complex economy (including global), can put political interests in perspective (b/c nobody can eliminate politics in D.C.) and can establish clear measures of accountability and teamwork to his/her cabinet, constituency and political opposition.

Oh come on face it,the fact
remains this country doesnot need another President Trainee like this
creep Barack Obama, not after Draft Dodger Cheney's
Trainee George W Bush as the stakes are far too high
to elect a greenhorn,naive
inexperience,con artist,
like Barack Hussien Obama
so please voters donot throw your vote away on him.

Barack is qualified. He has a brain and a heart. I bet he even knows how much a gallon of milk costs. He's of us, not of the elite. That's good enough for me.

Besides after Alfred E. Neumann, anyone is going to look like they have experience.

Obama 08!

Doesn't anyone use the spell check function anymore??

A breath of fresh air in a sea of political smog ... I see nothing wrong with Obama not having been sullied in the political trenches. Maybe he will bring us back to our senses and dare to dream of being a great country once again.

he gave a good answer

Competence

if i was american, I would vote for that guy

Javier~

Everything that happens in the world can't be blamed on race. If Obama doesn't win the primary is it because of his race? I plan to vote for him regardless of his race but for what he stands for.

OBama has my vote. He appeals to the best in all of us.

Nothing gets fixed unless you admit it's broken. Hillary will never admit the system is broken because she's part of how it got broken in the first place. Sure, she's got experience, but it's not the right kind of experience. She represents everything that's wrong with the way things get done in Washington. Obama brings a new perspective, and he's the real deal.

Kathleen ?? Experience in what,

Who is "experienced" and how does one get experience ??

We are choosing the leader of the free world here. With Obama at the helm I would feel confident and rest easier. I travel outside of the US at least 3 times a year. It is difficult and embarrassing having the man in the White House that we do now. I would be ecstatic to have a man like Obama representing our country. The US needs restoration.

I'm a republican - so I won't be voting for any of the democratic candidates. However, I'm an American first, and if America is going to select a democrat, Obama is the only one I can stand behind and be proud of as an American. Lack of experience will matter for about 2 weeks - having a likable candidate who can unite a country and restore our reputation throughout the world is something Hillary can't do, and I don't think I can take looking at her for the next 4 years :)

I'm voting for Obama because I am tired of being cynical about politics and politicians--including Hillary. The experience issue is a red herring--the president needs to have intelligence, common sense and good judgment. He can hire experience.

So the man can speak. Does the ability to speak in public make you a good president? What are his accomplishments? Can he speak of that? How about his voting record? How about groundbreaking legislation that wrote? Or maybe even a distinguished service record? Or can he only speak of the need for change? Someone being able to tell people that things could be better does not qualify you to be the commander and chief of the world's most powerful armed forces! It is obvious that our current president doesn't know what he is doing so speaking of change is the easy way to win an election. Let's get someone in office who has experience making change, not just inciting crowds. I don't think that person is Hillary though. She was already President for at least one term!

I am very concerned about Obama standing for president. Those who supporting him make sure that you are supporting for a muslim. He is a dangerous man and he is trying to impress he is a christian.

Brian, I believe people should be given an intelligence test before voting (and even posting to this blog). First question. How do you spell "competence"?

he has everything the party been missing

Posted by: Edward Howlett | January 14, 2008 7:45 AM

You wouldn't be refering to the "weed" and the "coke" are you Ed ?

In response to poster Jeff here.....I can't imagine four years of an Obama adminstration's race baiting nonsense.

First we see Michelle Obama on national television spouting that blacks will "wake up and get it" and vote for her husband simply because he is black, which insults every African American by implying they lack the intelligence to vote for someone based on something other than race. Even highly liberal National Public Radio sharply criticized that attempt by the Obama campaign to play the race card.

Now we have Al Sharpton out this week creating a race riot over use of the phrase "fairy tale" to describe a position of Obama's. Wow. Hardly racist. And Clinton saying LBJ helped realize MLK’s dream is racist? News flash -- Johnson helped.

Where is Obama the "uniter?" Well, he's standing on the sidelines delightfully fueling the impending race riot (of which he thinks he will benefit from) with statements about how many black leaders have supposedly called him to express "outrage" that someone would describe his position as a "fairy tale." Hogwash. His campaign is clearly dying to play the race card and is looking for anything, including "fairy tale," to pounce on.

How divisive this attitude would be in the White House. If someone criticizes Obama, it will inevitably always be labeled “racism.” You either worship him and agree with him -- or you're a racist. This is NOT the direction we should be moving in this country.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Give me a smart guy who can work across the aisle over an experienced person with less imagination. All this cr%p about Obama not being ready is ridiculous.

Cheney was prepared to be VP and look what that got us. Then again look what it got the people at companies he was beholden to. They are all doing rather well by the contracts and oil price spike caused by Mr Experience Dick Cheney's Iraq fiasco. Let's not forget the boy blunder (GW Bush) either.

Obama in 2008 and beyond!!!

Question: If Obama really desires to unite all Americans, why did he vote against declaring English our national language? Doesn't one common language help unite the citizens of a country more than anything else? This is one very important example of Obama's actions differing from what he says!!

How would hillary be able to satisfy a country if she couldnt satisfy bill...

Just FYI, the word is spelled "competence." KTHXBAI

This presidential race is all about compitance. It is obvious the current president has absolutely ZERO compitence, so whoever is elected at the end of this year should have the most compitence. Competence, Brian, c-o-m-p-e-t-e-n-c-e

Lets review past presidents experience. Bush 1: extensive and broad governemt, we voted him out. Regan, and actor and Gov. Carter: Retired military, Gov, we voted him out. Ford. extensive government, we voted him out. Nixon, extensive government, we voted him out. Johnson, extensive government, we would have voted him out.

SO what experience makes for a good president?

I would vote for Barak Obama if I didn't this he would be beholden to all the special group that are trying to get him elected. Will he be an honest President not kow-towing to special interest groups, or will he stand up for the people of the United States.

Look how many times Obama gives a Non-Vote/present vote. He is just a smooth talker that gives little mention of political stances and solutions. He just talks without saying anything. When he does talk solution it is pulling out the troops out of Iraq so we can bomb Pakistan.

On a side note: Iraq is the most successful war ever waged. (World War II lost more lives in single battles than Iraq has cost in total. WWII also took over a decade of US troops in Germany to rout out SS troops, etc. My grandfather was served with such express purposes. That is over a decade after the treaty was signed.)

I have several family members in the military and it is interesting that the people who are in Iraq and risking their lives are the ones pro- continuance of staying and finishing the job.

Thank you, Jeff.

Competence and spelling.

Obama is a black demogague. I thought he had a shot at the whitehouse. Then he thought talking about race is going to benefit him somehow; that's a huge turnoff.

Now - I decided to vote against him.

Investigoogle Obama and Alice Palmer. Clinton is not the first woman he tried to step over on his way to the top.

Obama lacks experience, most of the times he has voted in the Senate is "present" so he doesn't have to take a stand. As for "Change" he is yet to express what he wants to change? I'm from Illinois but I will NOT vote for this man.

Doesn't anyone understand that if we elect Hillary for president, we get Slick Willie AGAIN for at least another 4 years???!!! Wake up people!!!

GO OBAMA!

I can't help elect an American president whose middle name is Hussein. Sorry. Oh yeah...I also think the president should be someone who actually grew up in America for his or her entire life, not just when it became politically expedient.

Wow, there are a lot of people spouting off some completely false and slanderous information on here. Obama is not a muslim and to even say so shows how ignorant you really are. Please do us all a favor and don't vote in the next election since you obviously haven't taken the time to actually find anything out about the canidates. And for those undecided folks out there, ignore the slander. If you aren't sure, do some research and look it up. Just don't base your vote on that crap. That's how Bush got elected...twice. People didn't bother to do the research and as a result made really bad decisions. Don't make the same mistake twice.

Obama is not a Muslim. Please do your research before making decisions based on lies.

In other parts of the world, the name "Hussein" is just as common as "Smith" or "Rodriguez."

If you're going to vote based on these reasons, you may as well vote for a bag of leaves.

Annie -- Obama may not be a muslim but the manifesto of his church (United Church of Christ) states on its web site:

"We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization."

Now, call me foolish, racist or any other name you like, but I want the President of the United States to remain "true" to our land -- America -- not Africa. Sorry.

Obama is not a muslim
Posted by: Matt | January 14, 2008 2:03 PM

Matt and Annie,, He may not be , but his brother Roy is and that's a little too close to home for me,,,funny isn't it Barack Hussien Obama never talks about his brother Roy,,,,hmm..I wonder why that is.

Also, snopes.com is very helpful in determining if you've been fed a bunch of lies. And remember, just because an email may SAY that it's been confirmed on Snopes, do your own research, because that my also be a lie. (as per the recent "Who is Barack Obama??" email)

So they should be ashamed to be black and apologize for being Christian? Again, this is an example of people letting the wrong things matter.

If you won't vote for someone because you heard their brother is of a different religion than yourself, I guess there's really not much anyone can say to sway you.
