McCain nabs major SC nod: The Swamp

The Swamp

COLUMBIA, S.C. – "The State," South Carolina's largest newspaper, will endorse John McCain for the upcoming Republican primary in its Sunday editions, saying McCain has "the necessary experience, not just in time served, but in the quality of understanding he exhibits across the board."

Even if the paper's nod helps only a little, it'll be a welcome boost for McCain, who is polling neck-and-neck here for first place with former Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee. The endorsement called Huckabee an "exciting newcomer" and said "Republicans could do far worse than to choose him. But his utter lack of knowledge of foreign affairs is unsettling."

South Carolina holds its Republican primary a week from today.

McCain's endorsement completes an editorial hat trick for the candidate, who has been selected by the statewide newspapers in the two previous contested locations: Iowa (The Des Moines Register) and New Hampshire (the Union Leader). McCain won in New Hampshire, and finished third in Iowa.

"The State" newspaper has an average Sunday circulation of 139,521, nearly a third larger than its closest competitor. To read its entire endorsement go here.

Jason,

McCain was also endorsed by the largest and second largest newspapers in Michigan. The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, respectively.

If McCain wins our parties nomination I'm going to vote Democratic in the 08 election.

Since 2003 McCain has been nothing more than George W Bush's little lapdog and he's so old that I would have to consider who his VP pick would be because there would be the very real possibility that he wouldn't even live thru one term.

Romney 08!!!

The fact that McCain is a genuine hero for his service in Vietnam should not override the fact that he has a long record of leaning liberal. McCain didn't just go along - he has been the main sponsor of many liberal causes, deserting conservative positions over and over. He was a great soldier, but he would not be a good president.

Rudy and old man McCain should hook up, they could call themselves:

"The crazy old white guys who want to blow up the world" ticket.

Their theme song would be "bomb bomb, bomb bomb bomb Iran".

Go ahead and vote for the dems, Evan. You won't be missed. 34% of Republicans now support McCain, nationally (more than any other candidate), and he's ahead in both South Carolina and Michigan. How sad it's going to be for little Mitt when he loses the state that Daddy was governor of.

Gotta love this. Those on the right say McCain is "a liberal." Those on the left say he is "a wingnut" and George Bush's "lapdog." So which is it? Is McCain (and for that matter, Huckabee) a liberal, conservative or none of the above? Because I know that someone can't be a liberal and a conservative at the same time. Oh, and Evan, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who doesn't believe you when you say you are a Romney supporter. I think you would vote for a Democrat no matter who the Republican nominee is.

My friends, this is what I like to call: Straight Talk

McCain was a Founding Member of the Keating Five

Back in the old days, defendants in famous trials got numbers -- the Chicago Eight, the Gang of Four, the Dave Clark Five, the Daytona 500. McCain was one of the "Keating Five," congressmen investigated on ethics charges for strenuously helping convicted racketeer Charles Keating after he gave them large campaign contributions and vacation trips.

Charles Keating was convicted of racketeering and fraud in both state and federal court after his Lincoln Savings & Loan collapsed, costing the taxpayers $3.4 billion. His convictions were overturned on technicalities; for example, the federal conviction was overturned because jurors had heard about his state conviction, and his state charges because Judge Lance Ito (yes, that judge) screwed up jury instructions. Neither court cleared him, and he faces new trials in both courts.)

Though he was not convicted of anything, McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating's airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating's luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain's wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center; the Phoenix New Times called it a "sweetheart deal."

Michigan, it's time to get rid of the crooked old time Washington insiders (McCain) once and for all.

Go Mitt !!!

"(Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee's) utter lack of knowledge of foreign affairs is unsettling."

Maybe "The State" learned it's lesson after endorsing Bush in 2000.

The difference, of course, is that Huckabee isn't as arrogant and misguided as Bush.

Ahhh, isn't that the infamous liberal paper in the whole state?? yeah, thought so.

McCain isn't a real Conservative and this Republican will NEVER vote for him.

"According to Republican sources. McCain acknowledges that his adultery broke up his first marriage. His second wife Cindy, the daughter of a wealthy Budweiser beer distributor, was addicted to prescription narcotics and even stole hard drugs from a medical charity that she ran. McCain acknowledges that she didn't want him to run, and only agreed once he promised that she doesn't have to go to New Hampshire or Iowa".

JB,
You're "pretty sure" I'm not a Romney supporter?
How did you come up with that deduction, Einstein?

Jeff,

Romney 08!!!

john mccain is a moderate republican who understands the inefficiency and waste associated with big govt.
he is also strong on defense and able to cross to the other side when his conscience dictates.
such a principled man should be president!

Mitt's days are numbered, and thankfully, that means we don't have to read any more posts from the weak-minded people who have fallen for his constant pandering. And new polling information would prove this to be a good thing: McCain is the only GOP who does well against the Dems--oh, and Romney gets destroyed by ANY Dem. So those who still support Romney, your vote for him might as well be a vote for the Democrat in the general election anyway--he has no chance to win.

Lester, Keating Five is ancient history. McCain co-authored the landmark McCain-Feingold legislation precisely because of how wide open and ripe for abuse campaign finance was. Sure, he made a mistake in being involved in it but I think he's more than made up for it. And he wasn't the mastermind or "founding member" as you say. He wasn't recommended for censure by the committee that investiated it (only democrats were).

If I were you I would be more worried whether or not Mitt Romney is for or against abortion. That hurts more in conservative circles than something that happened 20 years ago. Face it, if McCain isn't a conservative, according to you, Romney's downright liberal.

Page, who are these "repubolican sources?" Could they possibly be people from the Romney and Huckabee campaigns?

Evan,

That poll isn't $%*@ because it's the latest one. But I've got a LOT more than one poll. He's ahead in both South Carolina and Michigan. I guess that's why the attacks from you guys are getting more desperate. You know, his wife is a druggie, he's an adulterer. When are you going to start saying he has a black baby?

C'mon guys, keep it clean. Smearing opponents that was is something democrats do.

Page,

I do like Governor Huckabee. I'd consider voting for him if John somehow doesn't win the nomination. I couldn't see voting for Romney because he has a history of saying anything to get elected and Giuliani would be our Clinton. One scandal after another in office.

I'm glad we have great candidates like Huckabee, McCain, and Fred Thompson to pick from, though. The democratic side is much weaker and is already devolving into a shouting match between two candidates with little to no experience (Clinton and Obama).

A vote for John McCain is a vote for the current adminstration. If you are happy with the status quo, vote John McCain. The Bush administration (and McCain, with the help of the media) are gambling on the hopes that they will be able to convince the public that the war in Iraq has been won, before the elections take place.

My vote will go for Paul, even if it has to be a write-in, but I really think Huckleberry will be hard to beat in the end.

Minnesotan, explain how a vote for McCain is a vote for Bush? Because McCain actually wants to defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq and Afghanistan?

McCain has quarrelled with Bush over lots of issues. He called for the surge three years before Bush was willing to do it because it was the right thing to do, not because it was politically expedient.

He supported legislation to stop global warming, which the administration STILL hasn't done.

If any one conservative is most responsible for getting Donald Rumsfeld fired it's John McCain. Face it, Bush doesn't listen to the media or the left, only conservative criticism got Rumsfeld out of there.

If you're serious about voting for Paul, I say good luck throwing your vote away.

Hey Swamp, where's the item about Gary Hart endorsing Obama? Kerry, Hart? Do you realize the democrat three-time loser trifecta is now in play? C'mon Dukakis!

John Mccain thought it would be funny to go on the daily show with Jon Stewart and make a joke about brining home an IED for Jon to put under his desk.

I wonder howmnay parents of soldiers who have been killed by IEDs in Iraq think Mccains little joke was funny.

I am so sick of hearing about what a war hero so we're not allowed to critisize him. he was a war hero 40 years ago. Now he's nothing but an angry sociopath whomust be stopped before it's too late.

If you think Bush was bad wait until you see Mccain in action.

The "straight-talk" on John McCain:

Frankly, you have to be suffering from short-term memory loss to consider his candidacy without laughing. In fact, the more you know of his record the worse it gets.

http://www.ontheissues.org/Senate/John_McCain.htm

The old man hates trains, fawns at the religious right every other cycle, and does a lot of other things just to be ornery. But the truth is the press loves him. He was getting so much free time on cable before a couple months ago, it was sickening.

McCain believes he deserves to be president. It's the exact opposite of what he would have said a decade ago.

He's a bumper sticker kinda Republican.

If you hate the 2nd Ammendment, your right to defend yourself, and the NRA, then you will love John McCain: http://www.nraila.org/Issues/FactSheets/Read.aspx?id=203

Also, remember then no less of an authority of the angry left than Markos Moulitsas of DailyKos.com has asked his crazy followers to vote for Romney in the Michigan primary.

More proof that a vote for Romney is a vote for the democracts. I can just see Hillary cranking up the Clinton attack machine and Obama's friends in the press (the same ones who sunk Blair Hull and Jack Ryan) going after Romney for both his religion and his policy positions.

"Minnesotan, explain how a vote for McCain is a vote for Bush? Because McCain actually wants to defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq and Afghanistan?"

Exactly - expect at least four more years of the same, if not worse...while at the same time ignoring our rapidly deteriorating economic situation, sky high fuel prices, and plummeting dollar...

As John McCain's profile rises among his Republican rivals, his close and deep relationships with lobbyists are certain to haunt him despite his carefully-crafted image as an "independent" and a "maverick." In an election year charged with anger at Washington insiders, McCain is the ultimate insider, with more lobbyists working on his staff, advising him, or raising funds for his campaign than any of his rivals in either party. As detailed in the Washington Post (see below), McCain campaign manager Rick Davis is a former lobbyist who has represented major telecom interests, with which McCain's dealings as a member of the Senate Commerce Committee have drawn particular concern (These include actions by McCain in 2003-2004 favoring Cablevision Systems Corporation while soliciting $200,000 in contributions from Cablevision for his "Reform Institute."). McCain's senior adviser is Charles R. Black Jr. of BKSH & Associates, which has also represented telecom interests as well as drug companies and defense contractors, among others. As early as last March, The Hill (see below) reported that McCain's aggressive courting of K Street had won him first place in lobbyist support among prospective 2008 candidates, a distinction still held by McCain at the end of December according to the Washington Post. While most candidates deal with lobbyists to some degree, McCain outdeals them all.

Washington Post (12/31/07):
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/30/AR2007123002848.html
The Hill (3/7/07):
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/gop-hopefuls-court-k-st.-2007-03-07.html

Well, Minnesotan, if you're against destroying Al Qaeda and bringing Bin Laden to justice, then I'm afraid Hillary Clinton or Barry Obama do nothing for you, either, because neither of them have said they'd leave Iraq and Afghanistan, immediately, either.

The "bring them home" now idea is great for campaigns but sort of untenable as policy. The difference with McCain is he actually has the military knowledge and experience to get it done.

John McCain is not the Republican he claims to be. He is a RHINO (Republican in Name Only), aka a closet Democrat.
He supports the president's "guest worker"program: amnesty for illegals. He spearheaded a campaign finance law, which limits free speech. He voted against a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. He has supported legislation by gun control lobby that would virtually shut down gun shows.
McCain is for getting us involved militarily in conflicts around the world. His League of Democracies will put pressure on target countries when the UN doesn't take what the U.S. deems to be appropriate action. The U.S. should stay out of other countrie's business. He is an internationalist--not a beleiver in an independent, sovereign U.S.
McCain, my senator, spoke in our town of about 10,000
a few years back. He was not the soft spoken speaking man you see on television. He was rude, irritable, and arragant. I remember thinking, "How could his wife tolerate him. I wouldn't put up with his behavior for five minutes"
He is 72 years old!
The presidential race should compete a Republican against a Democrat--not two candidates of basically the same party against each other. Vote for someone who is truly representative of his party, not just in words, but in actions.
