Obama: economic uncertainty demands leader with constant principles: The Swamp

The Swamp

By Mike Dorning

GREENVILLE, S.C.—Hillary Clinton has been using the gathering signs of economic trouble to make the case that her greatest asset with voters—experience in the White House at the side of Bill Clinton—takes on a new significance with the potential of an economic crisis early in the next presidency.

But today, as the stock market opened with another breathtaking plunge, Barack Obama turned to the national economic unease to amplify his own criticism of Clinton’s political leadership.

His message was a simple one, and one that has had a durable appeal throughout the world and over the course of history: in uncertain times, people need to be able to count on a leader with firmly fixed principles.

And, he argued, on economic matters as well as other issues Clinton has shown herself to be a creature of political expediency.

“In this time of economic anxiety and uncertainty, what this country needs most is a President who says what he means and means what he says; a president who won’t just do what’s right when the politics are easy, but when the politics are hard; a President who’s not just in it to win it; but in it for you,” Obama said in a speech delivered at Furman University in Greenville.

Obama charged that Clinton has shown inconstancy on some of the gut economic issues that most resonate with workers anxious about their economic futures.

On trade, he argued that Clinton had once applauded NAFTA and China free trade for promoting economic growth but reversed herself by calling for a “time-out” on trade deals.

He claimed that Clinton had changed course on protecting consumers overburdened by debt in voting for an early version of bankruptcy bill backed by credit card issuers that would make it more difficult for people to discharge debts in bankruptcy. She voted against a later version of the bankruptcy bill that was enacted into law.

And he accused Clinton of reversing herself on the economic stimulus package she announced this month because it did not initially include immediate rebates for taxpayers, a feature of the stimulus package he proposed. She later added the idea, citing evidence of a worsening threat of recession.

“This is exactly the kind of politics we can’t afford right now,” Obama said. “Not when the stakes are this high. Not when the economy is this fragile. Not when so many banks are foreclosing on people’s dreams. We can’t afford a President whose positions change with the politics of the moment, we need a President who knows that being ready on day one means getting it right from day one.”

An aide to Obama said that the speech offered a preview of the closing arguments he would be making to South Carolina voters in the remaining days before the primary here on Saturday.

nothing could unite republicans like a hiLIARy nomination

nothing would divide the nation like a hiLIARy presidency

"what this country needs most is a President who says what he means and means what he says..."

Is the Barack H. Obama who said this the same Barack H. Obama who pledged again and again he would serve out his full senate term and not run for president in 2008?

The very second Obama announced for president, he broke his pledged word.

A leader with principles?

Well that eliminates Oprahma

What does Barack Hussein Obama know about the economy?
N-O-T-H-I-N-G!

I've diagnosed you with obsessive/compulsive disorder w/racist tendacies.

You constant spewing of hatred towards Senator Obama is not normel.

OBAMA 08!

Obama has the unique ability to connect to people and inspire. I think there is a certain tendency from others to belittle that ability out of jealousy.

I look forward to eight years of an Obama Presidency, with the competence Obama has exhibited in his years of legislative and public service, combined with the inspiration and honesty he exudes in his public speaking and is reflected in his public service record.

Obama is the real change agent; let's leave the corrupt politics of the Washington power establishment behind.

Get a life, Paulotard.

"His message was a simple one, and one that has had a durable appeal throughout the world and over the course of history: in uncertain times, people need to be able to count on a leader with firmly fixed principles."

You gotta' be kidding with this bs, Dorning. Geez, Louise!
Are you channeling this guy now or what? Now you want to BE him. Really scary, man.

Anyway, what the heck do you mean by this nonsense. And please. Give examples. I know you can't. More platitudes -- now from the press corps no less -- with no concrete solutions.

Exactly what is Obama going to do to steward the country? I mean, he's already told us he doesn't plan to get bogged down in bureaucratic details. He's said that's not his job after all. So what's he going to do to "manage" this crisis?

A deteriorating economy is not the stuff of "symbols". Sorry to inform you, but it's the stuff of managers. CEO's as Hillary and Mitt Romney might say. People who are hands-on, you know.

Obama has essentially told us he'll just be there to give an inspiring speech or two and make us all feel good as the economy tanks, and we can't find jobs, pay our kids' tuition, worry about our eroding retirement accounts, etc. And that's perfectly ok as long as the motivational speaker of motivational speakers is there to offer us soothing words.

And his assertion that Clinton reversed herself on her economic stimulus package is a baldfaced lie. Her plan always included tax rebates if it was determined they were reasonably necessary. Not to mention he just copied her plan outright.

Furthermore, I think John Edwards destroyed his credibility on bankruptcy bills last night when Obama absurdly argued that he voted against a bill that would cap credit card interest rates because the cap on the maximum interest rate was too high. Edwards quickly, effortlessly and rather perplexedly pointed out that by voting against the measure Obama gave the credit card companies just what they wanted: no limit on the maximum credit card interest rate at all.

He's a hypocrite, and the Trib and LA Times are trying to sell his wolf tickets overtime. It's like maybe I should start checking my basement for "Invasion of the Bodysnatcher" pods. This really is getting weird.

Keatsian negative capability is basically the ability to handle uncertainty and to doubt one's own favored hypotheses.

It's a sign of a particular type of genius that is grounded in empiricism and thinking out of the box, including one's own preferred box.

Obama's got it and I first noticed it some time last year when the MSM took him to task for one of his "on one hand, on the other hand" statements.

Somehow in the noise of the primary campaigns I lost track of this factor, but in thinking more closely about the major candidates, I remembered it and it was one of the key reasons I've decided to support Obama.

Of course I'll support HRC if she wins the nomination, because it's clear that any of the leading Ds is better than any of the leading Rs, and a Huckabee presidency in particular would be a theocratic nightmare. HRC would be a competent president, and at least she believes in science which is something you can't take for granted these days.

And those who indulge in sniping against other D candidates (as distinct from reasoned criticism) are only helping the Rs.

However, Obama's got my vote in the primary. I read his main position paper last night and was majorly impressed. Anyone else here who's still undecided should do likewise.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, we have the chance to vote for (and have a president who is) someone who combines the best of idealism wih the best of pragmatism, who has vision and is grounded in reality, who can elevate the tone and level of civic debate and who will inspire others to do likewise.

OBAMA 08!

"I have remained consistent. I made sure to vote 'present' every time legislation was brought to the Senate. Oh, and can someone point me toward Illinois, its been a long time since I've been there."

Barack Obama is a class act.
Yesterday I complained to the Campaign that i was expecting a Delivery of goods...IE buttons, bumper stickers, lapel pins...trinkets n trash from their fulfilment center. I was going to use at a bar party Sunday to raise money for Obama. After explaining what i was going to use the stuff for, a volunteer from Chicago sent me an overnight pak so I'd have something to give away with each donation, it arrived this morning. I had called the 3rd party center everyday since my original order was placed last Tuesday but they clearly understood and spent the money necessary to satisfy a volunteer trying to raise money.

Suggested to them to have Obama Superbowl parties fundraisers nationwide. If this weekend goes well, I'm holding one, how about you, he is the real deal no matter what the haters say.

John E, uh sorry, I mean Jimmy: I want to thank you for copying and pasting just a small portion of your (chuckle) "essay" on why Obama is the savior of humanity. The complete version is so disorganized and irrational and brimming with generalizations and fabrications, that its down right painful to behold.

One question, though John... oops, I mean Jimmy. Why were you signing that "Obama Girl"? A little confused about your gender?

It is becoming abundantly clear that Bill Clinton is using his wife's candidacy to circumvent the presidential succession prohibition, just as George Wallace did in Alabama by getting his wife to run for governor to succeed him. This is pure and simple an assault on the U.S. Constitution. Is there really any question who would be running the country in yet another Clinton administration? Certainly not inexperienced Hillary. No, it would be
the disgraced former president whose ego outstrips the very Constitution he once vowed to defend.

Is there much of a difference in the positions of Senator Boy Wonder and Socialist Canidate Brian Moore. I'll bet its a 80-90% match.

About the Hillary vs. Obama debate last night: I think that Hillary is using her gender to do what she's TRYING to do...that is...use that sharp, overbearing tongue of hers to try to get Obama to lose his cool. Bill and HILL KNOW THEY'VE GOT A BATTLE ON THEIR HANDS...OBAMA IS NOT GOING TO LET THEM PLAY THEIR LITTLE GAMES AMD JUST GIVE UP AS IN THE SWIFTBOAT CONTROVERSY OF '04...WHAT'S OBAMA SUPPOSED TO DO??? ...lET THEIR INCENDIARY ALLEGATIONS GO UNANSWERED??? ...IF HE DIDN'T SPEAK UP, PEOPLE WOULD BE SAYING that the allegations Must BE true.
BARACK IS NICE, BUT HE'S NOT GOING TO LET THEM RUN aLL OVER HIM!!! Then, when he fires back, I'll just BET that some people actually feel SORRY for her ...just what she WANTS!!! And Billy boy has the NERVE to call himself "the first black president" (or whoever calls him that... did you HAPPEN to SEE HIM SLEEPING AT the MLK ceremony??? HOW DISRESPECTFUL!!! That just goes to show how concerned HE IS about Civil Rights!!! I'm just GLAD that Barack is NOT LETTING ALL OF THIS GO UNANSWERED!!!

While cable news shows gorge on campaign sparring, Obama's uplifting speech is absolutely dominating YouTube. The 34-minute address from Ebenezer Baptist Church is currently the fourth most viewed video in the world on YouTube, trailing two Britney Spears clips. Not only is that unusual traffic for a long political address – people also like it. On Tuesday, viewers voted it the second most "favorited" video in the world. It also drew the second highest number of incoming links, a key indicator of web interest that drives Google page rankings. About 43 percent of viewers have come from links on Obama's social networking page, MyBO, which encourages supporters to share videos and information with their friends. Other viewers came from apolitical networks, both within YouTube and on other sites. At SomethingAwful, a popular general interest site that proclaims the "Internet makes you stupid," one user wrote that the speech was so good it was worth posting in a non-political forum, attaching the video and text. The single post drew more than 3,000 new viewers in a day.

Hurry Up! Here's you last chance to vote for American Idol. No experience required. Look You Tube has spoken. Over 43 % from the campaign sight viewed it....He's a STAR- I mean-He Looks Presidential! YouTube has spoken 43% of his network...We tried very hard force feeding and bumper stickering every sight with this link to give the impression people actually went out of their way to see the Lord speak.

Did I add Obama is trailing Britney Spears...Where is she now? It must be a good thing.

"Is the Barack H. Obama who said this the same Barack H. Obama who pledged again and again he would serve out his full senate term and not run for president in 2008?"

*Yawn* Obama ran because people wanted him to run. Including people from Illinois. As a resident of Illinois, I'm pleased at his choice and that he decided to take the chance now while the time was right for setting aside the past and moving forward.

Obama has upside.

Hillary will lose Congress in two years, and we'll be back to where we are now with a disfunctional Congress.

Hillary did vote for the war because she was "assured" by the WH that force would be used only to resume inspections.

Hillary has a history of failure.

I'm voting for the kid.

Political candidates should be fined each and every time they intentionally distort an opponent's records and held accountable for this kind of unethical behavior and slander. Example, Hillary's recent statement she made on Meet the Press in which she said: "Sen. Obama's chief strategist accuses me of playing a role in Benazir Bhutto's assassination.'' When in actuality David Axelrod never made such an accusation. He said former Prime Minister Bhutto's death will ''call into issue the judgment'' of ''taking the eye off the ball and making the wrong judgment in going into Iraq.'' That statement of her's is Outrageous and potentially Slanderous! After all, most of us teach our children to play fair -- not to lie, cheat and steal! The leaders we elect to office should be held to a higher standard and should be people of principal, high moral character, honest and forthright.

Second: There is a time to be silent and a time to speak. Unfortunately, Senator Obama had no choice other than to diplomatically confront the Clintons on their lies and misstatements. He cannot and could not allow them to paint a picture of him that is NOT TRUE. The Clintons' tactics are old time party politics and should be a thing of the past as we move towards the 21st Century, towards cleaner air, cleaner water, cleaner politics, towards a more holistic way of living. It is a greater duty and in the best interest of the country for Barack Obama to continue to stay positive and hopeful while attempting to clear his record from these misstatements -- as he continues to try to bring this country together and lift it up from fear and a distrust of one another -- and to continue to show the American people and the world there is another way to run for office other than smear and fear and tearing your opponent down with lies and slander -- Swiftboating! That is why Obama and Huckabee are so appealing. They are authentic and each in their own way are trying to lead the Americans away from dirty campaigning, lies and tricks. How can we as a country be blessed and be a beacon of light to others after all that ugly and dirty fighting (lies, distortions and slander) we can't be. There is a positive way -- honorable way to fight with dignity, honesty and truth and a dirty way to fight that is unethical and slanderous and without dignity.

And too, we have to ask ourselves as a people, why do we allow this unethical and negative way of campaigning to be acceptable and then reward this kind of behavior, with one of the highest offices in the land?

Barack Obama: You Tube star and the Britney Spears of politics! I like it!

Ah, the lovely Paulo rears his ugly, racist head.

The only person in the world since Shakespeare wrote "R & J" that doesn't understand a "Rose by any other name would still smell sweet".

I wouldn't care if a candidate's middle name was "Hitler". If I thought he'd make a good president, I'd still give him consideration.

Go Obama!!

Let's face it. Hilary's Economic Stimulus Plan, 5 year freezing interest rate, is crazy. She is going to pull us into uncontrollable recession. Public, especially the ones who are not economically sophisticated love this proposal of freezing interest rate for 5 years! She is pandering to the poor and defenseless. She is not thinking about them either. What if the rate goes down during the recession (FEDs can cut the rate too)! The homeowners covered by Hilary plan may be stuck with the higher interest rate for five years. This is a bad policy proposal. How can she ask Obama where's beef? He's a policy wonk and got a fine beef. It is Hilary who has problem. Her beef is not edible, old and toxic.

Are Americans superstitious? what does an name has to do with a person's quality? what's wrong in the name "Hussein"?

it is really funny!

Bibbdawg: "Exactly what is Obama going to do to steward the country? I mean, he's already told us he doesn't plan to get bogged down in bureaucratic details. He's said that's not his job after all. So what's he going to do to "manage" this crisis?"

All good questions. Let's compare Obama and Hillary's legislative success as a measure of the success of their management style. No better indicator than outcome, whether or not you like.

Hillary's legislation....ummm, can't find it, in the entire 8 years. People say "she works behind the scenes". Doesn't cut it.

Obama's legislation:

eeping us secure: Lugar Obama disarms nuclear and conventional weapons around the word.

Keeping us in line: Coburn-Obama gives us government spending transparency. In both the State and US Senates, he has passed major ethics reform bills.

On the economy: he has passed several bills for alternative energy and energy independence, the best way to be free of expensive oil.

On taxes: he returned $100 million to families in Illinois.

Health insurance: He’s passed new health insurance, All Kids, aworking, affordable health care plan in Illinois, that covers 70,000 kids and 84,000 adults, where all kids qualify for $40 per child.

Civil rights: He’s passed civil rights legislation on the death penalty, racial profiling, and video taping homicide interrogations. He’s protected voter rights.

Women’s rights: His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services. He has a 100% rating for protecting women’s choice.

Education: programs for preschool education, extended the ceiling for Pell grants.
