The Swamp

by John McCormick

RENO, Nev. – On the day before the Nevada caucuses, Sen. Barack Obama is appearing here with his wife, Michelle, at the University of Nevada-Reno, where hundreds are packed into a gymnasium.

The appearance comes as the Washington Post reports that the Illinois Democrat is about to get some help on television from a union group that has been running a controversial radio that criticized his leading nomination rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York.

The Post says UNITE HERE, the parent union of the Culinary Workers Union of Nevada, a powerful union backing Obama, has bought $13,645 in ad time on a Univision station in Las Vegas.

The group's Spanish-language radio ad suggests Clinton does not respect Hispanics because another union with ties to her unsuccessfully tried to close caucus locations at casinos and hotels on or close to the Strip where many culinary workers will attend the meetings.

Clinton's campaign criticized Obama on Thursday for not denouncing the negative radio ad, especially after himself being so critical of spending by outside groups during the final days before the Iowa caucuses.

Obama awoke to a new poll in the Las Vegas Review-Journal that shows Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York with a lead in Nevada, 41 percent to Obama's 32 percent. The poll shows former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards with the backing of 14 percent.

Although it is notoriously difficult to poll in a caucus state – especially one with no history of a high-profile presidential nominating contest – the demographic breakdown underlying the poll looks bad for Obama.

Conducted Monday through Wednesday by Mason-Dixon and with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points, the poll shows the gender gap that hurt Obama in New Hampshire could play out in Nevada as well.

Among women, Clinton has the support of 49 percent, compared to 28 percent for Obama. Amomg men, Obama has a slight advantage, 37 percent to Clinton's 30 percent.

Clinton also dominates among the state's sizable Hispanic population, where the poll suggests she leads Obama 50 percent to 29 percent.

Among African-Americans, Obama leads 65 percent to 18 percent, but the newspaper notes that blacks are expected to represent just 10 percent of Democratic caucus participants.

Obama also leads among union households, but by just 7 percentage points over Clinton.

His campaign announced this morning that he has won the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez of California.

After his stop in Reno, Obama is scheduled to hold a town-hall-style event in Elko, Nev., before flying back south to Las Vegas for an evening rally and a banquet in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

If Hillary has the Experience to lead , then why didn't this get stopped by her expertise ??????

how can we trust a candidate that has the record of influence , and what does this say about the experience to lead , if these kinds of influences are not caught right up front , how can Hillary claim she has the right experience to stop these kinds of Illegal affairs , that even still is willing to take the funds , only to give them back , once the spot light has been cast upon them and their corruption of generating the finds like this example ;Clinton to Return Funds from Fundraiser Hsu
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14316806 .

I mean these people have to have a constant policing going on around them 24 / 7 , or we the people get manipulated to death , and so how can you trust em , and why should we start right out worrying about this kind of stuff ????

I like the Idea Barack Obama has about a Leader needing to be able to pick the right people to run the body of Government .

Barack Obama , the candidate for Peace and Prosperity can get the job done with Dignity and class , to restore the hope for the future of all .
Thanks for your time and have a Great day in the USA .

Politico.com gives the actual text of the Obama ad, which the Swamp doesn't, and points out the ad plays the race (or in this case, Hispanic) card:

"The radio ad aired by one of Obama's labor allies re-injects ethnicity into the Democratic primary contest in sharp terms.

"Hillary Clinton does not respect our people," the ad says in Spanish (original and Clinton campaign translation after the jump), referring to the lawsuit that failed today to shut down special caucus sites on Las Vegas' strip. "Hillary Clinton is shameless.""Sen. Obama is defending our right to vote. Sen. Obama wants our votes. He respects our votes, our community, and our people. Sen. Obama’s campaign slogan is 'Si Se Puede.' Vote for a president who respects us, and who respects our right to vote," the ad says, according to a transcript provided by the Clinton campaign and confirmed in part by a union official."

More racial division, from Barack H. the self-proclaimed "bringer-together."

The buzz on the street in Vegas favors Oboma, significantly. Lots of people are talking about "football and cacausing" this weekend - pretty unusual.

Hillary Clinton is a piece of trash... I am a democrat but there is NO WAY I can vote for her... She is running her campaign like this is some sort of high school-ish popularity contest... Most Americans of voting age have grown out of this sort of thing... She has absolutely NO CHANCE of winning if nominated.. A Hillary nomination = Me and a great deal of other democrats voting republican for the first time in my life.

This Nevada Caucus thing has devolved into a mess in the form of a proxy war between the Culinary Workers/Obama/Hispanics vs. the Teachers' Union/Clinton/Nevada Dem. establishment.

The ruling on Caucus Casinos will have low paid workers voting under the watchful eyes of their employers and union officials. How un-democratic is that?

Could some fellow citizen of Illinois please point to one "change" that's happened here since Barack Obama was annointed into the U.S. Senate?

All he ever talks about is change but all we get here from him is endorsements of the same corrupt Stroger cronies and support for raising taxes. I don't buy it.

p.s. I agree that caucuses are outdated and an infringement on the voters time and energy.

Bill Clinton falsely claimed casino workers' votes would count 5X:
http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local&id=5898176

Hillary's campaign headquarters in Nevada falsely claimed only workers at the major casinos could participate in the at-large caucuses:
http://www.lasvegassun.com/blogs/early-line/2008/jan/17/clinton-camp-confused-over--large-caucus-sites/

The ad is correct, even if the tone isn't.

If we've learned anything from the NH primary it is that pollsters are often mentally challenged. Being the only ones on the ballot with a familiar name, the Clintons have relished for the past year in the aura of inevitabilty the press has given them gratis. The recent lawsuit from the Clinton camp, which attempts to block Obama votes, only serves to reinforce the characterization that their strategy is "win at any cost". Their tactics will inevitably alienate and insult would-be supporters.

This entire exercise is truly great for the party. Hillary and Barrack are going at it with democratic gusto. They are stimulating and exciting the base, This this interesting.

One demerit is the 'double teaming', brought on by the former President's and his cronies various injections. It is unwise and a bit sad.
Both Barrack and Hillary have proved class A standard bearers.
History has gone forward. The former President structurally is a B or C act in current American politics.
The distraction, triangulation, the timidly moves is so last century and iconic. History is befitted by hindsight. There are huge things one should have done as president, if we must revisit those missed years.
Even Gorge Bush is strong and straight up, noble and loyal, especially when filtered toward the minorities around him. Why didn't the former president appoint a black Sec. of State, Supreme Court Judge or Hispanic Attorney General? Shorting minorities was slick' way back then, but today is seen as weakness and wrongness by modern progressives of all backgrounds. This is why Obama is so hot.

Folk see the old spin and really don't like it. Who wants to be strong armed?
He pandered to 'an angry' cohort to cut welfare and get reelected? It is sickening to think about it.
The former President had his chance.

Maybe any former President would be in the similar spot, trying to reemerge. Reagan Carter and Bush had no real historic conflict to remember. They did not get impeached only Nixon.

A humanitarian mission is there. Why not focus on that and get out of the people's way in selecting a new president?

This is why the constitution limits folk to two terms. This is serious. The powerful question of first spousel disqualification, the flip of shared experience, has not been fully debated. - or brought to constitutional tribunal. Could this be an Oct. surprise with a Republican Supreme Court.
Could the ten year limit apply, leaving VP eligibility only open to the First Lady and NY Sen. The former president needs to chill, before
this whole stunt, blows up for the party and one of our must gifted candidates.

He must catch himself and go away.
The hard fact is Hillary
Rodham is no longer the little 'wifey 'baking cookies and putting out fires. She belongs to the party and is a force of hope and change in her own right.
Her accomplishments in tandem with Barrak's are on track to make the Clinton and Nixon years of divisiveness an after- thought.

Maybe one should go to Sydney or Monrovia to once again prove grand worth the cause of human progress. Jimmy Carter. out of office, has never interfered with our electoral politics here in America. He is a post national figure, he has won a Nobel peace prize along with Al Gore. He is a big man in his 'own' right, all around the world. You don't see Jimmy hanging on. Whats wrong with the former president? Follow this honorable example. Its the only way proper to go.

to andrew: so sad, so sad but true, i have no choice but to follow you....

ABH anyone but hillary..... hey-hey, ho-ho, dynasty has got to go! Billary put that crown DOWN!

this race is full of mystery, why would some still vote for dynasty?..... billary put the crown down!

"He is a post national figure, he has won a Nobel peace prize along with Al Gore."

That's not looking so good anymore. Our ex-governor who's now doing federal time was also nominated for one of those.

What is wrong with America? The Giant Media has ignored John Edwards and this is what we will end up with. 2 Big Business Whores who belong in the Republican Party. WE ARE DOOMED!

Do all Obama supporters belong to some weird cult. That will drink battery acid one day when Obama orders them to.

I've already been watching the republican debates and researching them just in case I have to vote for one, should Hillary get the nomination.

Basically, I've got it down to probably two or three republicans I'd vote for over HIllary.

If it's Hillary vs. any of the other republicans, I just won't vote for President for the first time since I turned 18.

I would vote for Obama over every other candidate ever to run in my lifetime.

How in the world can dems vote for the Clinton machine? The dirty tricks they've pulled are just nauseating. It's clear they will do and say anything to get elected. In the process, they very well could destroy the career of the best hope America has seen since RFK. Wake up Nevada, vote Obama!

do all bloggers named jim belong to some kind of drinking cult

Obama is the only candidate that will be able to form a governing coalition while also setting a progressive agenda.

Barack Obama is a member of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Its minister, and Obama's spiritual adviser, Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. In 1982, the church launched Trumpet Newsmagazine, with Wright's daughters now serving as publisher and executive editor. Every year, the magazine makes awards in various categories. Last year, it gave the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to a man it said "truly epitomized greatness." That man is Louis Farrakhan.

Maybe for Wright and some others, Farrakhan "epitomized greatness." For most Americans, Farrakhan epitomizes racism, particularly in the form of anti-Semitism. Over the years, he has compiled an awesome record of offensive statements, even denigrating the Holocaust by falsely attributing it to Jewish cooperation with Hitler -- "They helped him get the Third Reich on the road." His history is a rancid stew of lies.

describing the September 11 attacks as a “wake-up call” to America for ignoring the concerns of “people of colour”, and for claiming that Americans “believe in white supremacy and black inferiority . . . more than we believe in God”.
., Obama offers white voters a chance to free themselves from white guilt!

unbelievable and he is running on uniting all people

Democratic Nevada Caucus - Prediction Time!

The road to the White House now goes through Nevada because Saturday's statewide caucuses

will help to clarify presidential nomination races in both major parties.

Who do you predict will win the Democratic Nevada Presidential Caucus?

I'm sick and tired of Obama's tactics.

Relying on fear by excessively using "hope" as his theme, and benefitting from not having to detail generic plans based on hope.

Having others play the race card for him, which his camp's already been busted for.

Trying to manipulate Hispanics by having unions intimidate them. (No wonder Hispanics don't like him.)

His "hope peddler" (dope peddler) mentality is bull.

I ain't buying it.

Nuff said.

Another example where Obama wants to rise above being a politician but is not the knight in shining armor some make him out to be. All Obama fans need to check his voting record to see if his talk matches his actions. Time after Time he has failed to make a vote concerning contentious issues. Didn't protect the environment, funding for Abortion, did not vote to censure Alberto Gonzalez, did not vote to reauthorize assistance with healthcare for low income children. Don't believe me? Voting records don't lie.

Jim Beam you are an idiot! Clinton does not care about you; she only wants to win; she and Billy Bob (the slime think the nomimation is theirs). She/they will tear the democratic party apart (they already started). I among many in our party will not vote for her in the general election. I guess we will drink battery acid one day 'if' Clinton wins the democratic nomination.
OBAMA 08!

Tired; get a grip and read a little bit; it goes a long way to making a half-educated comment:-)

I believe it. Congratulations. Hello Iraq! Iran here we come! Who knows maybe even Syria after we are done! I guess this is a popularity contest. I bash Bush and his wars on a daily basis, his tax cuts for the rich, and his vacations, Gitmo detainees, and he hasn't caught the guy dead or alive probably even in his dreams but Obama didn't make it so I will now vote for everything I scorn.

Since you seem half-educated, you should know.

Barack Obama for President of the UNITED States of America.

Bottom Line:

Like all of you. I know that health care is the most critical, and important issue facing the American people. Now, and in the coming elections. And like the vast majority of the American people, I want HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law NOW! "Single payer, Tax Supported, Not For Profit, True Universal Health Care" free for all as a right. Like every other developed country in the world has. See: http://www.house.gov/conyers/news_hr676.htm

“HR 676:
For church goers: less money to insur. companies and more to the church- lots more.
Srs on Medicare: save way over $100/wk. Because no more medigap, long term care & dental insur. needed. No more drug bills.”

But if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our current politicians to get HR 676 passed into law before the elections. We will have to identify, and replace all the politicians standing in the way of passage of HR 676. And, I think the best first place to start is with the politicians that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bills for the kids. Passed by congress twice.

But what about the President. It was Bush after all that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bill passed by congress to assure more health coverage for Americas kids. So which of the presidential hopefuls do I think will be most supportive of implementing the demand of the majority of the American people to have HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law immediately!

We have some very fine presidential candidates who would make good presidents. But none of the top Presidential candidates directly support HR 676, the only true Universal Health Care plan. So I am supporting Hillary Clinton. She is the only top candidate that has ever actually fought for universal health care before.

I have enormous admiration, and respect for Hillary Clinton. She fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds back in 1993. To prevent this disastrous health care crisis that is now devastating the American people, and America. She fought so hard for the American people that she risk almost completely destroying her husbands presidency. I haven't forgotten her heroic effort. If any Presidential hopeful for universal health care deserves my support, it's her.

Also, if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our government to give us HR 676 which we all so desperately need NOW! Then we will need the most skilled politician we can get on our side to broker the best health care plan for the American people that we can get. Though it will be less than we need, and less than we deserve. The politician I think to best do this is Hillary Clinton. The Clinton's are probably the most skilled politicians in American history.

The insurance industry, and medical industry that has been ripping you off, and killing you has given Hillary Clinton so much money because they fear her. They have also given Barack Obama so much money because they fear Hillary Clinton. They think they can manipulate Barack Obama against the best interest of the American people better than they can manipulate Hillary Clinton. There is no race issue with Hillary Clinton. The Clinton's are the poster family for how African Americans want white people to be towards African Americans.

My fellow Americans, you are dieing needlessly at an astounding rate. In higher numbers than any other people in the developed world. Rich, and poor a like. Insured, and uninsured. Men, women, children, and babies. And we the American people must stop it. And fix it NOW! Keep Fighting!!! Never! give up hope. There are millions of lives at stake. Bless you all... You are doing great!
