Everything was looking good for Barack Obama today at American University. Big crowd. The Kennedys (well, most of them). Lots of enthusiasm.
Obama finished his speech and then came the exit song. Note to all remaining campaigns: In an election dogged by allegations of candidates being beholden to special interests, this song is never a good idea.
Like a fool I went and stayed too long
Now I'm wondering if your love's still strong
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Then that time I went and said goodbye
Now I'm back and not ashamed to cry
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
I've done a lot of foolish things
That I really didn't mean, didn't I?
Seen a lot of things in this old world
When I touch them, they mean nothing, girl
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Oowee baby, you set my soul on fire
That's why I know you're my heart's only desire
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Barack, you've just admitted to doing a "lot of foolish things" that you really didn't mean. You don't think Clinton's going to be all over that? Here at the Swamp, we're expecting an attack from the Clinton campaign in our inboxes any moment.

Comments
Barack isn't afraid of admitting that he's done foolish thing. People love a story of redemption and a strong character who can rise above the trouble and difficulties of their past. In that light, the words of that song take on a much brighter meaning and the chorus is what becomes important, especially regarding the wonderful endorsement it followed.
Though, I believe you are right, the old guard woud follow the old rules of engagement and use something so frivolous as a means of attack. Petty.

Great article Jim Oliphant!

As Bill said, "Give me a break!" There are a lot of reasons to criticize Obama, but some song is a stretch. This is the kind of stuff that turns people off. Baiting the Clinton campaign to get into a fight with Obama's campaign over a song is the kind of thing I expect from the Rovian form of discourse both Clinton and Obama reject.
Oliphant, tell me this is a joke.

Are u serious, James? You put more thought into lyrics than a logical argument...kind of sad!
Posted by: Mobley | January 28, 2008 3:21 PM
Is Tony Rezko singing the song? That's the only thing that would make this better! After all, Obama signed, sealed and delivered government intervention for his failing businesses after Rezko gave him lots of campaign contributions.

He's been using the song for awhile. Since at least Iowa, I'm pretty sure.

This is a test

A better song choice would have been "Sweet Caroline," perhaps?

slow news day?
Really reaching here. Come on
Posted by: karl | January 28, 2008 4:52 PM
This is snark right?
Damn!... you political reporters are so used to being lied to by Politicians that sometimes you jump the shark when trying to read "between the lines".
There is nothing to this. Try not to take everything so seriously, and just enjoy the moment OK?

He's been using this song for quite some time now after his speeches. I would expect the attack would have already come from Clinton if she thought that attacking his song choice would make a difference.

"OBAMA SPEAKS"
AMERICA NEEDS CHANGE. WE NEED CHANGE. YOU NEED CHANGE.
NO WE NEED REAL AMERICAN DOLLARS TO BE WORTH A REAL AMERICAN DOLLAR.
NO WE NEED CHANGE IN HOMELAND SECURITY "QWEST" FOR QWEST.
NO WE NEED CHANGE THAT ADDS UP TO A EURO DOLLAR.
NO WE NEED CHANGE THAT ALLOWS A WOMAN TO VOTE WITHOUT DURESS AND STRESS FROM HER "MAN"
YES WE NEED CHANGE, BUT ONE BLACK MAN ISN'T GOING TO GIVE YOU ANY CHANGE. BECAUSE ONE BLACK MAN DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH CHANGE TO GIVE YOU.
SO YES WE NEED CHANGE, WE NEED SOMEONE TO CHANGE THE CHANNEL AND ALLOW HIS MOM, SISTER, AND DAUGHTER TO VOTE.
SO YES, AMERICA WE NEED CHANGE, SO LET MAKE SURE DADDY SPENDS $50.00 AND GETS SOME REAL HELP. TO MAKE SOME CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE.
VOTE HILLARY NOW THAT WOULD BE SOME CHANGE!

Want some news? I got it for you: Obama NEVER gave back the $100,000 he took from his slumlord buddy, Tony Rezko, even though he said he gave it to charity.
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=4203278&page=1
How's that for news? And dang, Swamp, where the H-E double hockey sticks is the Swamp post on this one?
You do realize the Sun-Times and now ABC News are scooping the heck out of the Tribune because of your reporters' cozy relationship with Obama, right?
Someone needs to tell the "breath of fresh air" that he can't lie to voters and he actually needs to return the dirty money his campaign takes from Rezko and not just pretend he returned it. This isn't Illinois where the Libune will give him a pass.

I think Obama should use the Blackeyed Peas " Let's Get It Started"!
I want Hillary's documents out of the Clinton Library and made public for this campaign...not after the campaign. Obviously there is something she doesnt want to talk about. I do know that the lawsuit brought by Geniffer Flowers against Hillary and James Carville is supposed to be in there.

Is that the same Sen. Ted Kennedy that allowed a staffer to drown? Is that the same Congressman Kennedy that chummy with
Hugh Chavez? Obama should be a little more careful with the company he keeps.

I was amused at Clinton's use of "American Girl" given the second verse lyrics:
"And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory --
God its so painful
Something thats so close
And still so far out of reach"
Maybe it'll be fitting if one day pundits and reporters decide that Bill cost Hillary the nomination.

"Barack isn't afraid of admitting that he's done foolish thing."
Posted by: Lexington Wolfcraft | January 28, 2008 2:26 PM
Lex, You got me there. He admitted that he "made a mistake" vis-a-vis Tony Rezko. Just one, though. Can't admit to all of our mistakes, can we?
However Barack hasn't admitted the obvious: that his 20 year financial relationship with Rezko is a little more than "a mistake", it's a serious breach of ethics to put it mildly. Part of that "mistake" was selling out his own constituency... public housing residents who were particularly vulnerable and in need of an ethical responsible representative in government!
Yeah. "A mistake".

Does Obama think he has the presidency in the palm of his hand? How arrogant!!! I wonder if he will run the country with that theme song. With Bush we have a problem of how we are preceived around the world well I guess with Obama's attitude and the song we will be perceived the same way
Posted by: Liza | January 28, 2008 7:22 PM
James Oliphant, you have got to be kidding me.
This article seems to be a lame joke until you say that one lyric in a song means that Barack is making a confession. Are you out of your mind?
What is it? Did the Kennedys' endorsement upset you? Here you are at a pivotal event in the history of our country and you decide to make a joke/attack about the song that plays afterwards.
What were you thinking?
I know this is a blog but you are a journalist aren't you?
Posted by: Edward Lynch | January 28, 2008 7:29 PM
It's unfortunate when a "reporter", a "journalist", claims that a lyric in a song is an admission by a candidate.
Give me a break.
By the way, are you rejecting comments from people just because they are questioning your journalistic integrity?
Posted by: Edward Lynch | January 28, 2008 7:51 PM
Have you forgotten the background music to one of Hillary Clinton's ads? It was from The Marriage of Figaro (opera), La calunnia รจ un venticello/Calumny is a little breeze.
It's about how slander starts as a little breeze, and as it's repeated it spreads and builds until it explodes like a cannon shot. Start at 2:45 into http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPsxeH6rWic for the traditional (Bill) version, or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LQ76g2VPj8 for the contemporary (Hillary) one.
Very appropriate. :-)

You just did a foolish thing by publishing this silliness on your blog.
Posted by: Edward Lynch | January 28, 2008 8:47 PM
I also thought that this part of the song by David Bowie might better suit Obama's theme of change (the words aren't as important as the sound):
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Dont want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I cant trace time
I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
So the days float through my eyes
But stil the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
Theyre quite aware of what theyre going through
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Dont tell them to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Wheres your shame
Youve left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you cant trace time
Strange fascination, fascinating me
Ah changes are taking the pace Im going through
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Oh, look out you rock n rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Pretty soon now youre gonna get a little older
Time may change me
But I cant trace time
I said that time may change me
But I cant trace time

Give me a break! So what. Obama didn't pick the song. He probably didn't even stay long enough to know what song it was. The campaigns just need to put the songs they want.
