The Swamp

by John McCormick

LAS VEGAS – Debuting what may be part of his speech in Atlanta on Sunday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, the pulpit home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Sen. Barack Obama suggested Friday night that African-Americans are starting to rally behind him.

After pointing out his first-place finish in the Iowa caucuses, Obama told an audience of African-Americans gathered for a King celebration at Caesars Palace that they should believe in themselves.

"Sometimes it takes other folks, before we believe in ourselves," he said, later adding: "Don't tell me I can't do something."

National polls show Obama has gained ground among African-Americans since his victory in Iowa, a heavily white state.

I can't wait to see and hear Obama's speech on Sunday at MLK Jr's Ebeneezer Church. I hope that it is televised some where ie Cspan, CNN, MSNBC, etc.

Obama seems to be channeling MLK Jr, JFK, and RFK in his speeches and may be one of the best speakers in our generation.

"Believe in yourself"!

Here is what I do not understand. Back in the 80's, Jesse Jackson sought nomination. Why? Was he or wasn't he ready? For the 2000 presidential election, Al Sharpton did the same. Why? Was it just for fun or he really believed he could do it?
Why then is all this back and forth with Obama?
Why can't African-american believe in themselves? Compared to Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, Obama has better chances to make it to the White House. Though not American, I feel that African-american are missing a huge opportunity here. This is your time. Just believe. Believe. Believe.

Elix Babedi,

Where are you from?

Does no one care that his background is one of hatred of the US? His step-father, who raised him, was part of an extreme islamic religion, which he heard most of his growing up.

Whether Obama is white or black, what is his purpose for being in the Whitehouse? He is playing up that he is black to get the backing, that is all.

How would it be if the white candidates were segregating their comments to the whites?

Concerned citizen...A truly concerned citizen would not lie when trying to shape an argument.

These comparisons of Obamba to Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK are so over the top. Does anyone really think this guy is in the same class as them? What has he done? Where are his bona fides? Except his ability to give grandiose speeches WHAT HAS HE DONE?

What has he done? Harvard... University of Chicago lecturer of Constitutional Law for 10 years...an activist who helped many on the south side of Chicago who lost their jobs in steel mills, etc. With his very impressive record he could have gotten a prestigious job in a number of law firms, but he chose to help the poor and downtrodden. What has he done for the United States?? Nothing yet, unless we give him a CHANCE!!! I just can't BELIEVE voters would put ANOTHER REPUBLICAN back in office. If they do... GOD HELP US!!! After NAFTA, who in their right mind would want to look at Bill Clinton in the White House living in the lap of luxury while millions of Americans are suffering because of his precious NAFTA!!! Obama really DOES offer HOPE and the ability to talk with and negotiate with other countries in a civil and intelligent way, instead of invading their countries over (let's tell it like it is ...OIL!!!) Also, we're NOT the "BIG DADDY" of the world, so who are we to be going around trying to run everyone else's business when we can't even take care of our OWN??? We need someone who has talking skills such as Obama and with his background _ ESPECIALLY TEACHING CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, TO ME, HE'S PERFECT.Quite frankly, I can't even imagine why someone would WANT TO tackle the MESS they're going to have to deal with!!! You would have to really love this country to do what the candidates are doing... just the thought of all the miles they travel is enough to make you tired!!! And that includes Obama ... I can't think of any reason to not give him a chance to do for us what he did on the south side of CHICAGO, only for ALL of us!!!

Jackson and Sharpton ran "to make a statement" more than anything else. They knew they had no shot.

Barack Obama is the first "viable" candidate of African American descent. He has state and federal legislative experience. Though many argue, right or wrong, wether he has had enough experience. But that is still something Jackson and Sharpton never had.

And as far as his upbringing , he had NO CONTROL over what his stepfather believed in ... that doen't mean he ascribes to it. Can ANY OF US HELP THE WAY WE GREW UP??? NO!!! SO IT'S very UNFAIR OF PEOPLE TO USE THE WAY HIS STEPFATHER BELIEVED AND TRY TO HOLD IT AGAINST HIM!!! HE DID ALL THE "RIGHT THINGS ... GOT A WONDERFUL EDUCATION...PUBLIC SERVICE... AN ACCOMPLISHED WIFE...the perfect family ...I guess some people want him to part the waters of the Mississippi or something!!! He's only human... but he has our (not the rich) best interests at heart... OR DO YOU WANT ANOTHER 12 YEARS OF WHAT WE ARE EXPERIENCING NOW??? IF you do...go for it!!!

What has he done? My case exactly those who can do and those who can't teach! What has he done? Who has he brought together? What parties of differing philosophies has he found common ground and brought together? Granted he is an inspiring speaker (a great quality is selling band instruments to the folks in Iowa) what has he done? The fact he could be a lawyer of merit is not an accomplishment either. so could a million people. Are they worthy of controlling the most powerful nation in the world? I think our country is too important to let a rookie take the reins with no real experience in world affairs.

Obama won the delegate count in Nevada today. The media should be reporting this so that normal (not us--people on this page) understand how close it really is. He did really well in this state considering all the obstacles that faced him.

No more Clintons please.

Presidential cabinets are a good place for people with experience. Yes, someone with 3 years of experience in the White House can bring consultancy and continuity so that the executive branch, all of it, can deal with changing times.

Dynamic Leadership, however, along with hope and change is what the American presidency is for. If we can elect an open and candid leader full of enthusiasm, this will be a leader all Americans can respect and who all the world can respect. Such a president can coach The United States of America to fulfill the highest expectations of its founders, and maybe even address some challenges they could not have even forseen.

Please elect Barack Obama President of the United States.

Elix Babedi, I'm with you.

It is frequently said that African-Americans detest the progress of one of their race. If this is true, one thing one should know is that "...a house divided against itself shall not stand". Clinton and Barack according to state.gov and cnn.com show very negligible differences in their views on the 2008 election issues. In addition, Obama shows all the traits of a US President - intelligennce, expeience, composure, good oration, consistency etc - except for color (and this can change with all our votes to elect the first black man to the US Presidency). Clinton on the other hand has displayed inconsistency, some irresponsibility with Whitewatergate (Ain't the Clintons Sleek: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitewater_scandal), subpoenas etc. under her belt and she doesnt seem true to her word. Why then would anybody not vote for the Obama? Why especially would blacks not support their own qualified person and contribute to the advancement of their race? (Even black CNN political contirbutors like Martin and Brazile seem to have something unknonwn against the guy...).

Nevertheless, though they say we can't, "Yes, we can". And we will win. Vote Obama as US President 2008!!!

P/S. I am female and black. My comments are not gender or racially biased but are drawn from careful observation and analysis.

Rick B: What has he done? Look to answer that question yourself. It seems that you are falling for the rhetoric of the Clintons and the pundits. Visit his website, listen to the man, read his plans, then re-post!
