Romney's got a Rambler in his veins: The Swamp

The Swamp

By Rick Pearson

LANSING—Republican Mitt Romney lashed out John McCain for feeding "pessimism" about job growth to an economically depressed Michigan and vowed to rejuvenate domestic car manufacturing because he's got the industry "in his blood veins."

Romney also called Mike Huckabee, another rival in Tuesday's Michigan Republican primary, "disingenuous" for trying to label himself a tax cutter during Huckabee's tenure as Arkansas governor.

Huckabee countered that Romney also raised taxes as Massachusetts governor and said Romney's investment firm put some people out of work while paying top officials bonuses when it restructured companies.

"I'm not sure that's what Michigan's looking for," Huckabee said.

With the Republican primary campaign in Michigan in high gear as it closed out its final weekend, Romney and McCain are atop pre-primary polls but Huckabee is quickly gaining ground.

On Sunday, during appearances on CBS' "Face the Nation," Romney and Huckabee went after each other on who would be a better leader. Romney also took a shot at McCain, the Arizona senator, for contending that some manufacturing jobs in Michigan are permanently lost and will never come back.

"The last thing you need in a state like Michigan is more pessimism and if he's saying those automotive jobs aren't coming back, well how about the jobs that are still here?" Romney said of McCain.

Romney, a Michigan native, is the son of the late former Gov. George Romney, who also was chairman and president of the long-defunct American Motors Corp. from 1954 to 1962.

"I'm the only one that was born and raised in Michigan, that's got the automobile industry in my blood veins, that has actually invested in Michigan, made investments in this state," Romney said.

"If you want somebody who knows how Washington works, there are a lot of people to choose," he said. "But there's only one guy who understands how America works."

Romney called for federal investment into energy and fuel technology to rebuild the nation's auto industry. He labeled new tougher automobile mileage standards "an anvil" around the domestic auto industry and said they represent a form of "unfounded mandate" on car manufacturing.

"We simply can't sit back and say, 'Well too bad for Michigan. They've got these new big mandates that are going to get laid on them. It'll really kill the domestic industry. Those jobs are gone forever,' " Romney said. "I don't believe it. I'm not going to do that."

Romney said Huckabee's ads promoting tax cuts he implemented in Arkansas were "disingenuous" because Huckabee raised taxes by $500 million more than he cut them.

"I don't know how he keeps getting away with saying that," Romney said, noting the Club for Growth has blasted Huckabee in TV ads for being "liberal."

"He's liberal on taxing. He's liberal on spending. He was liberal on commutations for prisoners," Romney said. "This is not the kind of Republican that you'd expect to go to the White House."

But Huckabee told CNN's "Late Edition" that "it's almost sad to watch him make these kind of claims" when Romney raised fees in Massachusetts by "over a half-a-billion dollars."

Huckabee acknowledged that taxes in Arkansas were increased under court order to improve education funding and that highway construction taxes also were increased. He said he had no "apology" for either.

"You balance the budget and you don't leave debts for the next generation and that's what people in America are looking for--competence, not political judgment but principled judgment," Huckabee said.

Huckabee said Romney, who headed the Bain Capital private equity firm, did an "admirable" job in some quarters by turning around failed businesses.

But Huckabee said, "There are a lot of people who lost their jobs when his company would take over, restructure a company, lay a lot of people off and a lot of times, the CEOs and the people at the top got some pretty huge bonuses and made a lot of money. A lot of people went home without a pension and a paycheck."

"It would be nice if Gov. Huckabee would stick to the things he knows about," Romney said, noting as an example that his firm was an early investor in Staples office supply stores. And, borrowing a Biblical tone from Huckabee, a Baptist minister, Romney said, "Don't cast rocks at people who are trying to create jobs and turn around businesses. We need people who know how to do that."

"Don't cast rocks at people who are trying to create jobs and turn around businesses." Haha, that's priceless!

On a more serious note, at least Huckabee and McCain aren't making personal attacks anymore...

Mitt Romney is identified with the Republican establishment who are blamed for the nation's troubles. He definitely cannot win in the general election. Mike Huckabee is a fresh face who is his own man and not a tool of the establishment. He knows how to govern the right way. He reaches out to people at all levels of society and can win the general election. If the Republicans want to hold on to the White House, they will select Mike Huckabee. Otherwise, Hillary Clinton will find herself in the oval office next year.

Massachusetts Lost 10,000 Jobs During Romney's Watch. Romney oversaw a net decrease of more than 10,000 jobs in Massachusetts. [Boston Herald, 2/21/07]

Romney Raised $500 Million in Fees, Imposed More Fee Hikes Than any Other State in the Nation. "A survey of states grappling with spending crises has found that Massachusetts imposed more fee hikes than any other state in the nation this year -- at least $500 million, the Boston Globe reported. GOP Gov.

Mitt Romney and the Legislature, faced with a multi billion dollar shortfall, made it more expensive to get a marriage license or a divorce, file a court case, buy a house, renew a driver's license, or tap into a host of other state services. The study by the National Conference of State Legislatures found that Massachusetts was one of 30 states that enacted fee increases this year." [Congress Daily, 8/28/03]

Property Taxes Rose to Highest Level in 25 Years. Romney's cuts to local aid forced Massachusetts property taxes to their highest level in 25 years. [Quincy Patriot Ledger, 12/16/05; Boston Globe, 10/24/05]

Associated Industries of Massachusetts: Romney Forced Hike in Local Commercial Property Taxes. Romney "signed a measure that allowed local officials to raise the commercial property tax rate, which cost business owners $100 million, according to Associated Industries of Massachusetts, the state's largest business group." [Quincy Patriot Ledger, 12/16/05; Boston Globe, 10/24/05]

Romney's Economic Record As Governor Is Shaky At Best. "Since January 2003, when Romney took office, through the end of last year Massachusetts ranked 46th in job growth, up just 1.1 percent. In the last year, the gap between Massachusetts and the nation has widened, with the state's employment rising only four-tenths of 1 percent, or less than a third the national average of 1.3 percent. That put Massachusetts tied for 44th in the country. If all things in life are measured against expectations, Romney will have a particular problem explaining away the economy. He was going to be our CEO Governor, the state's top salesman who could talk businessman-to-businessman and bring home those good-paying jobs. It was all bunk, of course. But he said it, and he will have to live with it. There are 40,000 fewer people in the workforce than when Romney took over." [Boston Globe, 2/15/06]

Economic Performance During Romney's Tenure as MA Governor Was "One of the Worst in the Country." According to economists at a Northeastern University, an analysis of the Massachusetts economy "reveals a weak comparative economic performance of the state over the Romney years, one of the worst in the country." [Boston Globe, 7/28/07]

· Under Romney, Growth in Labor Market "Not Only Lagged" But "Often Ranked…at the Bottom" in Massachusetts. "On all key labor market measures, the state not only lagged behind the country as a whole, but often ranked at or near the bottom of the state distribution," wrote economists Andrew Sum and Joseph McLaughlin. The economists cited drops in formal payroll employment and job generation. In fact, Massachusetts job growth during Romney's tenure was the third lowest in the country, and was so bad that it "would have ranked second lowest if Hurricane Katrina had not devastated the Louisiana economy." Manufacturing employment, "declined by more than 14 percent, the third worst record in the country." [Boston Globe, 7/28/07]

· Though Number of Employed People Rose Nationwide, It Fell in Massachusetts on Romney's Watch. "While the number of employed people over age 16 in the United States rose by nearly 8 million, or close to 6 percent, between 2002 and 2006, the number of employed residents in the Commonwealth is estimated to have modestly declined by 8,500. Massachusetts was the only state to have failed to post any gain in its pool of employed residents. The aggregate number of people 16 and older either working or looking for work in Massachusetts fell over the Romney years." [Boston Globe, 7/28/07]

· Wages and Income in MA Fell By 2% During Romney Years. "Between 2002 and 2006, the median real (inflation adjusted) weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers in Massachusetts is estimated to have fallen by $10 or nearly 2 percent. The real income of the average (median) family in Massachusetts in 2005 was 1 percent below its value at the time of the 2000 Census while median household income was 3 percent below its 2000 value. Median household income fell even more sharply in the nation. Family incomes in both the United States and Massachusetts have become more unevenly distributed since 2000." [Boston Globe, 7/28/07]
· ...But Housing Prices Rose Substantially. "There is one additional area in which Massachusetts was a national leader over the past five years, the rise in housing prices. Between 2000 and 2005, the median self-reported home price in Massachusetts increased by nearly 95 percent versus an increase of only 40 percent for the United States. The median home price ranked fourth highest among the 50 states, and the median value of homes relative to household income was the third highest in the country. The high affordability cost ratio encouraged the high levels of out migration from the state of young families with children." [Boston Globe, 7/28/07]

He’s even running from his tax-raising record as Massachusetts governor. Romney’s ad – which features him jogging near his summer home on New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee -- claims he inherited a state facing "huge deficits" and "turned it around" without raising taxes. [Boston Globe Political Intelligence blog, 8/29/07]
But the Associated Press reported this week that on Romney's watch "Massachusetts led the nation" in new fees imposed on taxpayers. In just his first year in office, Romney raised fees and fines by $501 million, including $140 million in what Romney called business tax "loophole closings."
Romney earned the nickname "Fee-Fee" after increasing fees paid by the disabled, gun owners, people seeking training to combat domestic violence, used car buyer -- even horseback riding instructors. [Associated Press, 8/28/07]

Wow, Romney will say anything to win a primary. Remember, Michigan, that Romney raised fees in Massachusetts to the tune of half a billion dollars in just one term as governor. Yes, I'm sure that will inspire MUCH more job creation in your state.

"On a more serious note, at least Huckabee and McCain aren't making personal attacks anymore..."....and that's a reason to select an American President? Haha, now THAT'S priceless.

Be serious yourself: Romney has more substance than Huckaby and McCain put together. Neither one of them can hold a candle to Romney in BOTH domestic and foreign affairs.

Romney built his own fortune. McCain's second wife gave him his. And Huckaby keeps saying we should vote for him because he isn't financially successful. Hoo boy...

We need QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCE in the White House and that means Mitt Romney.

It's looking like Mitt will win Michigan. Good for him.

Huckabee is using his faith to gain votes. I think that is not a way to win the general election. Go Romney!!!

The more you know about Bain Capital, the less you'll want to support Mitt Romney. He was a tunnel-vision CEO, and that's not what we need as POTUS.

How about some truth about Romney's record on fees and taxes in MA? After the previous post of half-truths and misrepresentations, let's look at the whole picture.

Here are the approximate numbers:

$260 million -- These Fee hikes that were passed prior to Romney's first year in office, yet did not take effect until Romney was IN office.

$240 million -- Romney's fee hikes included services like highway billboards, multiple copies of driver's licenses, bar exams, etc

$150 million -- Romney closed corporate tax loopholes

Add all three up, and there's your $650 million, which usually gets rounded to $700 million. Of course, Romney's contribution is only $400 million. Closing the corporate tax loopholes are simply enforcing existing tax code as it was intended...to call this a tax hike is like calling it a sentencing when you send an escaped convict back to prison.

And the $240 million of fee hikes that Romney approved were more than offset by various TAX CUTS he implemented...in other words, better than a "revenue neutral" shift of taxes to service fees, which any conservative should like. The service fees were generally in line with national and local inflationary trends, as well as making the prices more reflective of the actual costs. Fees generally make accounting in government more transparent, as you can see where the money is going...and there's really no good reason to subsidize a service cost below its market value anyway.

Here's the link for a whole litany of Romney's tax cuts, the biggest of which was his reversal of the $250 million retroactive capital gains tax in 2005.

http://www.mittromney.com/News/Press-Releases/Romney_Record_Taxes_12.22%20%3Chttp://www.mittromney.com/News/Press-Releases/Romney_Record_Taxes_12.22%3E

Mitt Romney is pro-growth-- for making the Bush tax cuts permanent, across the board tax cuts, making middle class savings tax free, cutting the corporate tax rate, killing the death tax, and making qualified medical expenses tax-deductible.

"On a more serious note, at least Huckabee and McCain aren't making personal attacks anymore..."

Are you serious Dan? First, Mitt is running contrast ads, not attack ads. Attack ads are when people make claims like "He's a tyrant" or "He's anti the average person". Saying that someone voted a certain way is not an attack ad. Second, Mike Huckabee and John McCain are massively sneaky guys. They do attack others including Rudy Guiliani and Mitt Romney. Consider, Huckabee's little comments about Romney's mormonism. He may try to hide that he's attacking but if Mitt had made similar comments about Mike's religion, people would have run him out of town on a rail. Please conservatives, let's be smart here. McCain (or McKennedy as I call him) supported amnesty, the McCain Feingold crap legislation and opposed the Bush tax cuts. Mike Huckabee's only claim to fame is his social conservativism. Other than that he can't claim he is anything like a conservative. Let's choose a real conservative as the nominee.

The Huckter's supporters quote the liberal Boston Globe to attack Romney--lame and predictable since their guy's a liberal on fiscal issues, raising taxes net net half a BILLION $$$. Romney did raise some fees, but cut corporate welfare and cut taxes overall bigtime. More on turning around the Michigan blue state blues (too bad we can't import Mitt to turn around Illinois.):

Go Mitt !!!

I don't want that angry McCain guy getting the GOP nomination, he's not even a real Conservative and he's so old that you would practically be voting for whoever he would pick as his running-mate.

Romney 08!

Congrats Mitt Romney for being tagged "King of the flip flopper". If I were you, quit now to save dignity. Your chance of winning the primary is the same odds as Ron Paul. Face it, nationally it looks like a 3 way fight and you're not 1 of them.

In has been an interesting race thus far and a widening of the candidates on the issues. I believe that the economy is becoming one of the most critical elements in this election.
To date - I have been largely undecided and weighing the candidates and issues in my mind.
On review of the candidates, McCain has never been at the helm of a successful business - nor has Huckabee. Gullianni's actions don't reflect solid family values in his lifestyle.

So, I have been looking hard at the Romney camp. Who can argue about his success in turning around the debacle in the Winter Olypmics? He also seems to reflect American values and a track record of getting things done. The religious bigotry shown in our country was embarrassing when it came to Romney being a Mormon. (I work with a good deal of Mormons at the office and have Mormon friends - and my personal experience is that Mormons are generally honorable decent people - and yes - Christians. . )

I am disturbed when people link layoffs to Romney.... Businesses evolve and at times they have to conduct layoffs to retain their financial health and viability in highly competitive markets( In my career I have been in rooms when those decisions are being made - and I can tell you that not one single person I ever met in my career wanted to conduct a layoff) - but once a business is stabilized they expand, retool and then hire more people. I think that we need someone with a track record of leadership, building success in the face of challenging times, not a Washington politician - and someone whose own life is firmly embedded in family values. This is why I have decided to vote for Romney.

Huckabee's a joke, a total pawn being hyped by media as they watch independents and evangelical robots prop up his candidacy, which will be the platter on which the Oval Office is served to Clinton or Obama. Mike's the only Republican out of Romney, Rudy, McCain and himself who would lose to either of the Democrats.

How can anyone take Romney seriously. He believes like all Mormons that pre- Columbian North America was inhabited by millions and millions of Hebrews who rode horses, had chariots, and made steel. Pretty objective thinker. Not for my president, thank you.

Lets get serious people. Does anyone really think that it would be a good choice to have Huckabee or McCain in the white house?
Huckabee would be great to speak at my funeral but not to run my country. McCain is running for the wrong party. If you want a democrate in office go vote for Obama, you would probbaly like him if you like Mccain and he is much more personable. Mitt Romney may not be perfect but you have to admit he has done alot of things right in his life. His family life is in order, he is successful financially, he turned the olympics around, he was a successful governor, and is much more qualified to be president than any of the other canidates.

Romney supporters, THIS is an attack ad:

I don't want that angry McCain guy getting the GOP nomination, he's not even a real Conservative and he's so old that you would practically be voting for whoever he would pick as his running-mate.

Posted by: Rick | January 13, 2008 2:49 PM

When you say stuff like that you lose all credibility. Not that your guy had any in the first place. He was for fiscal conservatism before he raised fees to the tune of half a billion in four years. He was against late-term abortion before he was for it to get elected in liberal Massachusetts. See a pattern?

Mike, how is a compromise bill that would've forced illegals to pay at least $1,500 in fines and keep a clean record over a 7-year path to citizenship "amnesty" as you say? That is an attack, my friend, and one that's based on a falsehood at that.

You guys are getting REALLY desperate. You're learning the lesson the same hard way that Ned LaMont did that money doesn't buy elections.

I wonder how many people can look at all the Republican candidates hammering on each other, and then look over at the Democrat candidates all taking shots at each other, each one worse than before, and tell me that a longer campaign season is a good idea. Sheesh. Give these guys much longer, and we will have to start worrying about WMDs, MAD and détente on the campaign trail.

We should amend our Constitution so that election campaigns last for three months tops – just like they do in the U.K. There isn’t anything left to say that hasn’t been said by that time. We have televisions and the internet now, so it doesn’t take a year and a half by rail or horseback to spread the word about a candidate or an issue like it used to. Subjecting everyone to this mind numbing torture for one and a half years out of every four is as maddening as watching the coverage of JFK’s funeral on a continuous loop.

My friends, this is what I like to call: Straight Talk

McCain was a Founding Member of the Keating Five and he's a longtime Washington insider...who can't be trusted.

Back in the old days, defendants in famous trials got numbers -- the Chicago Eight, the Gang of Four, the Dave Clark Five, the Daytona 500. McCain was one of the "Keating Five," congressmen investigated on ethics charges for strenuously helping convicted racketeer Charles Keating after he gave them large campaign contributions and vacation trips.

Charles Keating was convicted of racketeering and fraud in both state and federal court after his Lincoln Savings & Loan collapsed, costing the taxpayers $3.4 billion. His convictions were overturned on technicalities; for example, the federal conviction was overturned because jurors had heard about his state conviction, and his state charges because Judge Lance Ito (yes, that judge) screwed up jury instructions. Neither court cleared him, and he faces new trials in both courts.)

Though he was not convicted of anything, McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating's airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating's luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain's wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center; the Phoenix New Times called it a "sweetheart deal."

Michigan, it's time to get rid of the crooked old time Washington insiders (McCain) once and for all.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1188858/posts

Go Mitt !!!

Lester, you're passing on a smear from the Romney campaign from the '80s? McCain was never even censured for Keating Five, like three of the democrats were.

His experience as a new senator with the S&L scandal prompted him to become involved with reforming the campaign finance system and the culmination of that mission was the passage (and upholding by the Supreme Court) of McCain-Feingold, the landmark campaign finance bill that has limited the pervasive influence of money in politics and kept rich people like Romney from buying elections.

I'd say the debt has been more than repaid.

Romney is the only candidate that has done some significant changes in his state has improved the lives of millions of people. I admire him for having strong family ties. Married to the same woman for over 30 years. Family is very important to him. He is a grandfather of 10 grandchildren and still find time to work hard for his state and business and still be able to play with his grandchildren and just be a grandpa. That's a true US family. That's why I vote for Romney. I don't think Romney needs to be a president to do good around him he is already doing it. I think the reason he is running for US president because he cares about the people and he truly knows he can make america the greatest country on earth.

It seems that people use the term "attack: far too often. As a Republican, it is my responsibility to weigh each of the Republican candidates carefully, and then choose the one who I think will best represent me as the president. I have done so and I feel that that person is Mitt Romney. What I don't like is the animosity that seems to be tainting this election.

I am young in the political process, so perhaps I have not noticed the animosity in previous elections.

Allow the candidates to point out how they are different. That is important to the political process. It is essential for the candidates to identify how they are different so that we the voters can make informed decisions.

What is also important is that we remember to stand behind the person the republicans choose to represent us in the general election.

Just remember that in the process of the primary we are debating the points of the candidates, and not argue the personal preferences and lifestyles of the candidates.

Go Mitt!!!

McCain's positions are bizarre and inconsistent.
http://www.ontheissues.org/Senate/John_McCain.htm

The old man hates trains, fawns at the religious right every other cycle, and does a lot of other things just to be ornery. But the truth is the press loves him. He was getting so much free time on cable before a couple months ago, it was sickening.

McCain believes he deserves to be president. It's the exact opposite of what he would have said a decade ago.

He's a bumper sticker kinda Republican.

Huckabee graduated from a Bible College with a degree in THEOLOGY. John McCain graduated 790th out of 795. Mitt Romney graduated from Harvard with an MBA - business/law. Which of these men seems equipped to deal with our economy? We have enough pastors in the country - many just as bigoted as Huckabee. There have been many that have served our country in the military and they deserve our respect - not our vote. Mitt Romney has a proven record in business, I have seen many stories in regard to his integrity. He lives Christian values and even those who mistakenly believe that Mormons aren't Christian should recognize that. Mitt Romney will make an excellent President and I hope that I will get the opportunity to vote for him!

One more thing specifically to Kwynn - as a Christian I'm sure that you believe that Moses parted the Red Sea, Noah built a giant boat and saved the world, Jesus raised the dead and various other Biblical stories - those stories seem a little far fetched as well. Lay off trying to make the Mormons look crazy, you have no real knowledge of their beliefs. You sound like an Evangelical, are you part of Huckabee's congregation - oops, campaign?

I think that Romney is the most intelligent candidate in the running. With decisions of the upmost importance to make, I want the smartest person possible making them.

In the contest between Mitt Romney and Cardboard, Mitt Romney loses by a wide margin.

Cardboard is less stiff, is not a flaming liar, is far more likable, and has a much better track record.

No one comes close to the talent and experience of Mitt Romney!! Do we want to see the recession end sooner? Or are we just going to sit around and watch BROKEN Washington do nothing for another 8 years?!! The answer is to elect Mitt!! His specialty is putting together amazing teams of talented people who can look at problems from every angle. We don't want a dictator like McCain who accomplished nothing in 25 years other than a support of the surge!!!!! G
GO MITT!!!!

Romney has put $17 Million into his own campaign, hardly public support. I think that Iowa and New Hampshire proove that you can't buy your way into the presidency.
If any other candidate had put as much on the line in Iowa and NH and lost like Romney did they would be out right now. It's only because of his own money that Romney is able to stay in the race, not because of real public support. He also wouldn't have had the support he did to begin with in Iowa and NH without his own money because Republican donors wouldn't have contributed to him based on his liberal stances when he was govenor.
At best Romney would be running behing Thompson and Paul right now if it weren't for being rich. Period.

Also, remember then no less of an authority of the angry left than Markos Moulitsas of DailyKos.com has asked his crazy followers to vote for Romney in the Michigan primary.

More proof that a vote for Romney is a vote for the democracts. I can just see Hillary cranking up the Clinton attack machine and Obama's friends in the press (the same ones who sunk Blair Hull and Jack Ryan) going after Romney for both his religion and his policy positions.

No candidate, republican or democrat, compares to Romney. He is the only candidate that can fix our economy and keep this country competitive internationally. Romney has the best qualifications of any candidate. He has shown to have great values and to show kindness and concern for others. This man will make Americans proud.

GO MITT!! He is by far the most intelligent and qualified candidate to lead!

How can Romney "fix" our economy? By raising fees by billions on the ALL the American people and not just people from Massachusetts?

Romney may have an MBA, but he doesn't have a clue about how to get things done in Washington.

McCain has 20 years of experience doing just that! Unlike Bush, McCain actually IS a uniter. He knows how to get the votes to pass controversial yet necessary legislation like McCain-Feingold and McCain-Obama (mandatory caps on greenhouse gases).

McCain has shown he can not only reach across the aisle and end the partisan gridlock and anger that has made our government useless, but that he will also be willing to put his reputation, as President, on the line to do what's right, not what's politically expedient.

Has Romney even ever been to Washington, let alone tried to work with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi? Dealing with the democrats in Massachusetts is nothing like that type of hardball.

The only Republican candidates I will surely vote for are Thompson and Romney. I will not vote for either McCain or Huckabee. If we have a dem in the whitehouse , they might as well be dems in name as well.

What the heck...let's give Mitt a chance to show his stuff with our messed up economy. No guarantee he'll be successful. The only guarantee is that none of the other candidates have a clue about how to fix it!

As a businessman in Las Vegas I would let Mitt run my business any time . Mitt has integrity and the know how to staighten out Washington.
I certainly wouldnt let a pilot, a preacher, or an actor, run my business or my country.

In short, I'm for Mitt. McCain has been in Washington way too long. It's time for a NEW Washington. Romney doesn't have the BIG White House connections (like lobbyists) as McCain has. This is the most interesting presidential campaign that I have ever experienced. So much differences between the candidates.

Capn WIllard has flip flopped more that a live perch in pan of hot grease..

Ohh, I wouldn't go there, Mike. Where do you think all of Romney's campaign cash has come from? Here's a clue: lobbyists. And special interest groups. The people who hate McCain because of McCain-Feingold. One guy can clearly be bought, one clearly cannot... McCain has shown he's no friend of K Street.

McCain the Uniter: part architect of the colossal disaster that was McCain-Kennedy, Yet he feels divinely inspired to resurrect it once his coronation is over. God save anyone who gets in his way this time. I see limbs flying.

I can't provide documents or links to corroborate my following point, so simply call it an observation: John McCain seems to be teetering on the edge of old age, although, apparently, we're not supposed to notice. He increasingly relies on cue cards for speeches, his hands shaking. In debates, he provides a coherent, halfway intelligent response only to follow with an occasional non-sequitur or memory lapse. "My friends" is approaching a trademark tic. Add in a few smirks, grimaces and displays of red-faced rage, and you have, well...something bizarre and unsettling. Mavericks might play okay in the Senate, but they could well be a liability in the White House.

All that aside, McCain has built his campaign primarily around a venerable military history, but he hasn't, to my knowledge, articulated a vision for the future. Or has he?

Romney said Huckabee's ads promoting tax cuts he implemented in Arkansas were "disingenuous" because Huckabee raised taxes by $500 million more than he cut them.

"I don't know how he keeps getting away with saying that," Romney said, noting the Club for Growth has blasted Huckabee in TV ads for being "liberal."

"He's liberal on taxing. He's liberal on spending. He was liberal on commutations for prisoners," Romney said. "This is not the kind of Republican that you'd expect to go to the White House."

Huckabee is a weird bible thumper. I don't believe one thing that comes out of that former tub of lards mouth. The republican party is trotting out some real losers this time around!

Do America a favor Swamp residents, vote democrat.

No, tl921, I don't believe many of the bible stories, but I do know about Mormonism. I have lived in Utah my entire life, the bulk of my family is LDS and I have read the Book of Mormon and if you would read it you would know what I said about Mormon's believing that millions and millions of Hebrews inhabited North America prior to Columbus, was true. And the timeline for all of this ran concurrently with the Roman empire and guess what. You can go to Rome and see this history. Try to find the remnants of a civilization of millions of
Hebrews in North America. When you do, then I will believe Mitt can think objectively.

Kwynn, did Jesus visit Springfield, Missouri, in the early 1800s, too?
