COLUMBIA, SC--As expected, former Arkansas Gov.Mike Huckabee is leading in the northwestern Bible Belt counties around Greenville and Spartanburg, but he’s not leading McCain there by the margins he may have expected—or counted on-- nor by the margins by which George W. Bush won those counties in 2000. This is bound to make for fraying nerves in the Huckabee camp which needs every evangelical or conservative Christian voter it can get.
McCain, on the other hand, is running much better in the Bible Belt area than he did in 2000, as well as better in areas, such as Charleston County, where he performed strongly in 2000. Charleston and the coastal Low Country in general are home to many retired military, which are a key McCain constituency.

Lisa Anderson claims that McCain is running much better in SC than he did 8 years ago.
That is of course obvious nonsense. McCain is running well behind his 2000 vote percentages.
The difference from 2000 is that the anti-McCain vote that united around Bush in 2000 is split among several candidates in 2008.

Gee, Bruce, you mean you have to get less votes when you're running against four other people than when it's head to head? You must've been the smartest kid in the dumb class.
