NASHUA, N.H. -- As Sen. Barack Obama's campaign awaits an announcement later today on a possible endorsement from the powerful Culinary Workers Union in Las Vegas, word arrived overnight that he won the backing of the Service Employees International Union of Nevada.
It was a boost for Obama, after a second-place finish in the New Hampshire primary that surprised his campaign, pollsters and political observers.
“We were looking for a candidate who could take the campaign all the way through November 2008 and reclaim the White House for America’s working families,” Vicky Hedderman, SEIU's Nevada president said in a statement.
Nevada will be the third state to hold a nominating contest on Jan. 19, following Iowa and New Hampshire.
At least before his second-place showing Tuesday, Obama was expected to pick up the endorsement of the Culinary Workers Union in Las Vegas, the state's most coveted union endorsement. The union, with its 60,000 members, represents workers in hotels and casinos. It is the largest union in the state and is expected to be heavily involved in the Nevada caucuses.
The Culinary Workers are expected to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Pacific time to announce their endorsement.
SEIU Nevada, meanwhile, said nearly two thirds of its 17,500 represented workers are registered to vote. The union said members live in more than 1,000 precincts across the state.
“Nevada is a caucus state, and as Obama showed in Iowa, organization of every precinct is key to winning,” Jane McAlevey, the union's executive director said in a statement. “SEIU Nevada members from Reno to Elko to Las Vegas are ready to make a difference in this state for our candidate.”
In October, SEIU’s leadership opened the presidential endorsement process up to local unions on a state-by-state basis. So far, SEIU locals and state councils in five states have endorsed Obama, including his home state of Illinois. Those unions are free to send their members into Nevada to help campaign in the 11 days leading to the Nevada caucus.

Comments
Big endorsement, you just wonder how many members of this union will do as their bosses tell them to do and how many of them will vote their own feelings. Women and minorities make up the majority of the Nevada SEIU and both groups have reasons to vote for either Hillary or Obama beyond the interests of their union.

I wonder whether Hillary will shed a few tears when she learns of this?

In defeat he is the epitome of grace and class. Unlike other candidates he did not trash the voters of the state he lost. He didn't lose his composure. He did not call his opponents win a "Fairy Tale".
Instead he took this moment last night and told America "Yes we Can". "Yes we Can" believe again. "Yes we Can" hope again. "Yes we Can" we can be united as Americans instead of the artificial barriers of red states and blue. He is ready to be President. (Even my republican friend said he wants him to be President after he seeing his concession speech last night)

Hopefully THIS will spell the end for Hillary's run. She somehow fooled the NH voters, but then again - she's fooled a bunch of Yankee's before when she won her Senate seat. I can't say with certainty that Obama is by any means more qualified to be president, but comparatively he's more HONEST (hey - at least he admits he inhaled) and that has to count for something...

I think its a great idea to elect someone with no Foreign relationships!
Hillary can fix America's Image problem! Go Hill!!

If SEXIST Nepotism gets Hillary nominated I'm voting against the Democrats for the first time ever.

Obama admits campaign/PAC donation linksBad news for the Barack Obama camp and his politics of hope clean-guy image. The Washington Post reveals today that there was, indeed, close coordination between the Illinois senator's presidential campaign and his leadership PAC, Hopefund, in deciding which local, state and federal politicians around the country were to receive thousands of dollars in contributions from Obama's PAC.Such coordination appears to be forbidden under Federal Election Commission rules because it, in effect, would give a candidate another, less regulated financial fund to influence the outcome of his own campaign. But Obama officials express confidence they violated no rules. The Post's John Solomon reported the other day that Obama's Hopefund had distributed money in the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire to people like New Hampshire state Sen. Jacayln Cilley, who got $1,000 from Obama last summer. Six days later the Democrat in the nation's first primary state announced her endorsement of his candidacy because she said she believed in him.Likewise, Obama's PAC gave $9,000 to U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes, who was New Hampshire's first congressional member to endorse Obama. In the earlier story Obama spokesmen denied any connection between the PAC and Democratic presidential campaign. But today's piece alters that account and says the PAC has distributed $180,000 to groups and candidates in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Iowa and another $150,000 to similar destinations in states with primary balloting through mid-February.Bob Bauer, private counsel for both Obama's campaign and PAC, named names of those from the campaign who'd help select the PAC's recipients and professed confidence the Obama entities had met all FEC regulations. But Scott Thomas, a Democrat and former FEC chairman, says: "He is clearly pushing the envelope."

Congresswoman Shelley Berkley Endorses Clinton
Nevada’s Democratic Representative Declares Hillary "100% on the side of Nevada."
The Clinton campaign announced today the endorsement of Congressional Representative Shelley Berkley. Berkley will lend her experience, knowledge, and influence to Senator Clinton’s historic run for the White House.
"When I first met Hillary years ago I was struck by the depth of her caring and knowledge of the concerns of my fellow Nevadans. And I have always been impressed that she is ready, able, and willing to take action. Her record against Yucca Mountain is 100% on the side of Nevada. I know first hand her tenacious advocacy for family health care, veteran’s services, education, and affordable housing - and have no doubt Hillary Clinton has the strength, knowledge, courage, and vision to be a President who will lead by action to solve our great challenges at home and abroad."
Representing Nevada’s first Congressional district, Rep. Shelley Berkley is currently serving her fifth term in Congress, where she serves on the House Committees on Ways and Means and Veterans’ Affairs. Uniquely qualified to represent Nevada’s First District, Berkley has resided in Las Vegas for over forty years, and is an alumna of the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She has previously served in the Nevada State Assembly and as the Vice Chair of the Nevada University and Community College System Board of Regents.
"Shelley Berkley is all about results - and she has delivered for Nevada time and time again," said Clinton Nevada Chair Rory Reid. "Shelley knows that Hillary Clinton is the only candidate that has a proven record of making real change happen, and shares Hillary’s bold vision for America’s future. We’re thrilled to have the boundless energy and tremendous knowledge of our state’s most passionate advocate on Hillary’s team, helping us turn out every last caucus-goer."

Go Barack!! That is great news for him after that travesty in New Hampshire.
Hillary's teary-eyed act was a real turnoff for me - as a woman, I wish that she would not have to resort to damsel-in-distress tactics. That's just not presidential.

I just received an e-mail about Obama saying that he was a Muslum, that when he was sworn in he didn't use the Bible he used the Koran and he does not pledge the Flag. Do we need a President that does not belive in the principles of the United States of America. I am a retired service man (US Navy) and when ever I have to pledge the Flag I get that lump in my chest. We need a true American as our next President.

Looking forward to an Obama win in Nevada and South Carolina. I can see Bill Clinton in SC now after Hilary loses:
Bill: What is wrong with yall', you know that dog can't hunt.
When push comes to shove you need a president that can shed a tear when Iran bombs Iraq. ** Smile **

it is a pity that experience, which is insignificant in the case of Hillary, is being touted as the salient feature above Barrack that is giving a reason to a few Americans to vote for her. Her experience is only in the Senate, and her "involvement" in the Irish Peace talks while Bill was President and Hillarycare, that she thought would radically change healthcare, is hogwash. Barrack Obama is an idealist, and America needs a President who in all adversities, will not waver from what is important to the country, which is uplifting of the middle class instead of constant pandering of the rich, and developing a credibility around the world, which has been lost because of the machiavelian strategies adopted by the current government.

You should probably research that bit of spam e-mail, Joe, because it's false.

I find it absolutely amusing and frustrating at the same time that so many of you people are harping on Hillary Clinton for showing a little emotion. I have a newsflash for you: She NEVER actually cried! I will take her experience and her message over Obama's castle in the sky any day of the week. I will tell you this much, if Obama wins the primaries and doesn't show me some real substance, this democrat will be voting republican for the first time. Go Hillary Go!
Addotionally, It turns my stomach to hear Obama compare himself to John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr.....two great men he doesn't hold a candle to.

I'm sure others will ring in on this, but let me just join the throng.
Joe, that email is -- how do you call it? -- plain old crappola. It's run through here before under the reference of a Snopes.com article that some doofus or other thought was gospel even though Snopes clearly refuted it in detail.

Jor Palmere--That was Paulo, pay no attention.
Jeff--McCain favors the FexEx business model of personal friend, Fred Smith, which employs "independent contractors" (read no benefits) over the UPS model that recognizes the unions and provides a living wage. I guess he can forget about getting any SEIU votes.

What's with Hillary Clinton's remark on Monday regarding Dr. King having a dream but it took Lyndon Johnson, a president to make the dream come true. It's comments like this that affrims the dream is far from true. Give me Obama any day. He is a breath of fresh air. Bill and Hillary are over the HILL. Bill is looking like the good old boys who feels intitled and gets mad when he cannot have his way. I'm disappointed in him. I liked him better as president.

Culinary workers? Service workers? What happened to the UAW? Or to machinists? Present and recent past American presidents have allowed our country to go to the dogs. Thanks Chimpy, thanks Bill, thanks Poppy Bush for bringing this country to the point of being a bunch of servants--instead of being the builders. You sold the farm and gave our might away to the biggest bidders, or to the biggest lobbyists. Remember, one of the main reasons the South lost the Am. Civil War was because she had no factories. Learn your history, get smart, get out of the way, and lets start building again. Make trade agreements fair for Americans- not "American" corps. Also, years ago I used to read about So.American countries nationalizing international corps. Will we have to be on that path soon, too, due to having no where else to go, and being fleeced to death by "American" presidents and congress?
American values and idealism mean nothing if we don't have a nation of our own any more. I am afraid that (currently Chimpy), Obama and Hillary have not been more verbal, or more selective in their actions and votes to reassure me that they want a strong Amerca for Americans. The only one who has been vebalizing this message has been Edwards. Too bad he is not purple or polka dot. People backing Obama and HRC-- do you know for sure that they will not deal away more of America? Or do you not care because the facts are obscured by the novelty of a first woman, or a first black president?
Third try at posting this. Sorry if multiple postings.

KnoxvilleWill:
Your stomach should be turned and your head should be examined if you actually believe the Clinton's camp made-up garbage that Obama was comparing himself to Kennedy and King. Expect Bad Cop Bill to continue with his half-truths through the rest of the campaign. It is sad to see the former President resorting to such tactics.

dt, good to speak with you again. I don't think McCain (or any republican for that matter) counts on union votes and really none of them have for the last 25 years.
They plan to offset what they lose in union votes with small business votes as an overall strategy. Independent contractors being defined as "small businesses" in the UPS/FedEx example.
The democratic side is what intrigues me about the Nevada primary. No doubt, getting SEIU on board is big for Obama, but many of these voters simply make up their own minds and don't vote the union or corporation line when it comes election time.
That's why I don't think Obama can put Nevada in the W column yet. Remember this detail: the union is saying only two-thirds of 17,500 of its members are registered to vote. That's not an election-swinging majority even if they all voted the party line.
Like I said, there are other factors that many of these women and minority voters in SEIU will consider beyond what their union tells them to do. That's why it's so intriguing. We'll actually get to see what SEIU and the culinary union's real power is.
p.s. Also, Nevada went for Bush in 2004 despite no union endorsements.
