Sharing the Christian vote with Gov. Huckabee: The Swamp

The Swamp

Mike Huckabee, the Baptist preacher and former governor of Arkansas, has no lock on the evangelical Christian vote. He has shared the vote with his Republican rivals in the early primaries and caucuses.

At the same time, Huckabee hasn’t collected much support beyond the vote of evangelical Christians in those early contests, exit polling shows.

But Huckabee has collected enough of that critical base of the Republican Party – four in ten of all Republicans nationally – and stands to collect enough in contests to come that he may well lay claim to path-finder for the nomination of Sen. John McCain.

So long as there is a strong evangelical magnet in the Republican contest, McCain’s leading rival, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, will have to share the conservative vote with Huckabee and McCain.

"We're far from out of this thing,'' Huckabee told Fox News today. "We're in it for the long haul.''

As rival Rudy Giuliani prepared to drop out today after a poor showing in Florida, Huckabee told Fox's The Live Desk with Martha MacCallum: "The fact is they say, well we've barely made fourth, but Rudy's the one dropping out today -- not me.''

Without Huckabee in this contest, Romney may well have won Florida’s primary – look at the small, conservative counties of the rural Panhandle, and look as well at the bigger counties around Pensacola, the homes of military bases and retirees that sided with McCain over Romney.

Huckabee spoiled the conservative vote there for the candidate who is attempting to lay claim to the conservative base of the party, Romney.

In Pensacola, where McCain learned to fly in the Navy, McCain beat Romney by about 15,100 to 13,400 in Escambia County, but Huckabee picked up 9,500 there. In neighboring Santa Rosa, McCain collected 9,600 to Romney’s 7,600 – and Huckabee pulled 6,300.

In Central Florida’s Lake County, home to the greatest evolution debates of modern Florida politics and a school board that has given the Kansas board of education a run for its money, Romney narrowly defeated McCain by about 14,900 to 14,700. Again, Huckabee pulled 9,000.

And from the Gulf Coast end of the swing-voting I-4 corridor to the Atlantic Coast end, where McCain defeated Romney, Huckabee spoiled the day for the former governor of Massachusetts. In the center of that contest, Orange County, which has voted Republican for years but went Democratic in the presidential contest of 2000 for the first time since 1948, McCain narrowly defeated Romney – 29,600 to 29,200. Huckabee: 15,700.
Now, Rudy Giuliani’s presence in the race may also have served as a brake on McCain’s potentially greater vote.

But all of this remains a hypothetical matter, for Huckabee is in the race. And Giuliani is not, not after today.

So, looking at what the former governor of Arkansas has collected in the early contests, it’s clear that he will likely continue to play a role that works against the interests of Romney and for the cause of McCain, who may well spell the path to nomination, H-U-C-K-A-B-E-E.

Ever since the “Values Voter Summit'' which the Family Research Council sponsored in Washington last fall, when all of the Republican candidates courted the Christian right in a two-day convention, Romney and Huckabee have been sharing the vote.

Romney won a straw poll there, thanks largely to a concerted campaign of supporters voting online from outside the hall. But Huckabee, who told the home-schoolers and others assembled there that he does not spell G-O-P G-O-D, clearly was the favorite of the hall

And, in the contests that have followed, they have continued to share.

In Iowa, Huckabee collected 46 percent of the voters identifying themselves as evangelical Christians and Romney collected 19 percent. McCain had 10

In New Hampshire, Huckabee had 28, Romney 27, and McCain 28.

In Nevada, Huckabee 22 and Romney 39 – and Romney won there.

In South Carolina, Huckabee 43, McCain 27 and Romney 11.

Which just goes to show: evangelical Christians are willing to share their votes. But, so long as Huckabee is in the race, Romney and McCain will have to share them with him.

As a conservative backing Senator McCain, I think that those pundits ready to write Governor Huckabee's political obituary should get their fingers off the keyboard. As he proved in Iowa and elsewhere, Governor Huckabee is a credible, viable, respectable, likable candidate whose message resonates with voters---particularly his views on social issues and his economic populism. His candidacy could easily catch fire again---and those who underestimate him and his message to Christian conservatives do so at their own political peril. And if he doesn't win the nomination, he'd make a great VP nominee as we get fired up on the road to victory in the fall.

I cannot understand why Mike Huckabee is backing McCain:
- McCain is an Adulterer – he left his faithful wife, who stuck with him during the Vietnam captivity.
-McCain is a liberal - Huckabee is a rightwing Fundamentalist Evangelical conservative.
-McCain wanted amnesty – Mike claims to be against amnesty.
-McCain is for election reform – Huckabee is not.
-McCain wanted the Iraqi’s to set a timetable – Huckabee claims to be against it.
- McCain - a newly proclaimed Baptist for political purposes only, who never attends church. Huckabee, you know, the former ordained Baptist preacher.

There is hardly a difference between Huckabee and Romney politics. Both are morally upright. Both are strongly religious.

The only logical conclusion I can come up with that explains Mike Huckabees support for John McCain and is opposed to Romney: Mike Huckabee’s hatred for anything Mormon. Bigotry raises its ugly head again. Such a shame.

Huckabee is being used as McCain’s lapdog at the expense of the Conservative Republican Party. Hopefully, he and his Christian followers figure this out before it is too late.

Ahh, Swamp, are you guys asleep at the wheel again? Hulk Hogan just endorsed Obama!

Do you realize what this means? Presidential candidate endorser deathmatch between the Hulkster (Obama), Rambo (McCain) and Chuck Norris (Huckabee)!

How are you guys missing this!

J Scott writes, "There is hardly a difference between Huckabee and Romney politics. Both are morally upright. Both are strongly religious."

Oh really? You truly know for an absolutely undeniable fact that your candidate, Governor Romney is "morally upright"? No adultery ever? Not even one lapse or indiscretion? I hope you're right. But how on earth could you or anyone know for sure? People similarly praised pedophile fighter Congressman Mark Foley as "morally upright"---remember? Were you one of them?

And if you, as someone who doubtless is also morally upright, find it distasteful to vote for a presidential candidate who split with his wife, then surely you must have opposed Governor Reagan's candidacy in 1980. Thanks for being consistent!

But really, accusing Governor Huckabee of being a religious bigot who hates Mormons? Now that's an unfounded accusation, and not very morally upright of you, is it?

"BUSH'S FAITH BASED MINISTER SPEAKS"

YA'LL BETTER RECOGNIZE. IF YOU WANT MO MONEY, YOU BETTER CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND TELL THEM TO GIVE ME MY IMMUNITY OR I WILL HAVE JUST COME OUT OF THE CLOSET WITH ANOTHER "PRESIDENTIAL EXECUTIVE ORDER #99" AND HAVE MY CONGRESS IGNORE THE CONSTITUTION FOR THE REST OF MY PRESIDENCY.

SO IF YOU WANT MORE MONEY TO DEPICT WHAT GOD IS SAYING UNTO YOU. THEN YOU BETTER PICK UP THE PHONE AND GET ME MY IMMUNITY.

AT&T & VERIZON WIRELESS ARE ALREADY READY TO CANCELL ROOM 641 IN THE WHITEHOUSE, AND WE ARE NOW STARTING TO FEEL WHAT IT IS LIKE NOT KNOWING WHAT CHUCK SCHUMER IS DOING, AND PATRICK LEAHY IS TALKING TOO.

THINK MONEY, NOT GOD. THINK FAITH BASED MONEY, NOT THE VOICE OF GOD, THINK "EXECUTIVE ORDER" NOT THE CONSTITUTION.

THINK GEORGE!

J Scott pinned the tail on the donkey! Huckabee and McCain are frightened by Mitt Romney's credentials and composure, so they are fighting dirty politics - outright lies about Romney and Huckabee's continued third-rate campaigning - all in the hopes of knocking out the obvious, all around leader, Mitt Romney.

McCain is a grouchy old man. I cannot believe people are falling for his crap! He has a bad temper...have you ever noticed that he can't ever just wing a speech..he has to always read it. They guy is older than Moses and is one step away from a retirement home. Sheesh give me a break!!!

As a Christian, yes the Evangelical kind, I've never met a Republican I was will to give my vote. I like McCain and might vote for him if Senator Clinton is not the democratic nominee. Gov. Huckabee seems nice enough and he's a good bass player, but has never appealed to me as a candidate.

Dear Mr. Huckabee: You yourself know what the scriptures say about someone like you who pretends to be holy but actions speak better than words. Your satan statement about Romney's religion are your tag line. You resent his wealth, his looks, his brains, his beautiful family and his ever faithful religion. You make a mockery running for president with your banjo. I didn't realize how small Chuck Norris was till he stood next to you.

shashatina, you didn't get anything right. Do some research. Banjo?

Damon writes, "The guy is older than Moses and is one step away from a retirement home." Wow, that's almost exactly---nearly word for word, what Democratic Party operatives crowed about Governor Reagan in 1980. You're not a Dem operative, are you? As we all know, our "older than Moses" Gipper did nothing short of serve eight years as President, winning the Cold War and presiding over the largest peacetime expansion of the U.S. economy in history. You recall that, right?

I agree with Tim1979 that Huckabee has a definite place in this race. Here is why; McCain has a very moderate record on social and fiscal issues as does Romney.

Romney is courting the "conservative" vote, but look at his record; the Massachusetts economy improved far less than the average state during his term. Romney appointed a member of the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association to the bench. He also created a socialist health care system that pays for abortions and is now going bankrupt... He seems to pay more attention to Reagan's hair, than his conservative ideology ;>

Huckabee has been fighting an uphill battle using ideas and verve against McCain's name recognition and Romney's money. How about asking where Romney's votes would go if he stopped spending hand over fist to get votes ;)

I bet people will be surprised when the campaigns announce how much they spent for the quarter tomorrow.

A vote for Huckabee is really a vote for McCain.

Doug in Florida writes, "A vote for Huckabee is really a vote for McCain."

I respectfully disagree. A vote for Governor Huckabee is really a vote for Governor Huckabee---who will use the votes to win the GOP nomination; or if he falls short, use his amassed votes as effective leverage to ensure that the Christian conservative wing of the Party gets a great seat at the table in the fall.

Mitt Romney is A MORMON. He would fair better with evangelicals if he was an athiest. I find it incredibly interesting how a bunch of non-evangelicals are judging how the evangelical community votes, especially due to the fact that in every state that Huckabee has campaigned vigorously in, the evangelicals have overwhelming voted for him over other candidates.

And on the subject of Mitt Mormon Romne:
Evangelicals think that he has no principal. They don't like rich, since most evangelicals aren't, and they don't like people from the Northeast. If they did, they would have voted for Steve Forbes in 2000. The only guys in the evangelical community that have not endorsed Huckabee, and endorsed Romney or Giuliani are people like Pat Robertson (who endorsed Giuliani, the thrice cheating sex addict from New York who some suspect to be Gay) and Bob Jones (who prior to endorsing Romney made statements condemning the Mormon church and its followers). Both men have received criticism from within their own following because their endorsements are so contrary to their previous statements and beliefs. Many in the evangelical community believe they love power, BIG SURPRISE.

In any case, Huckabee still is ahead in Georgia, and Alabama, and Missouri, and Tennessee. Romney CAN'T WIN. and although i personally dislike Huckabee, I think he has a better shot at getting delegates from evangelicals than Mitt Mormon Romney does.

Huck will come back on Super Tuesday with a strong showing in the South and lower Midwest. If my state were voting the 5th, I'd vote HUCKABEE.

Tim1979. You are exactly right. I'm a Huckabee guy that will never vote for somebody I don't trust. I'm, mostly, independent, but I have the same issue with Romney that I did with John Kerry in '04; indeed, even Hillary.

HUGE NUMBERS OF EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS ARE RALLYING AROUND ROMNEY.

FIND OUT WHY:

Huckabee is fun, but absolutley not smart enough to run our shaky economy, He could send us into a depression. McCain's economic skills are non-existent. WE ARE SHOOTING OUR OWN LIFESTYLES IN THE FOOT IF WE DO NOT CHOOSE DR. ROMNEY TO SAVE OUR ECONOMY.
Further, McCain's temper is violent. One congressman said "You do not want this guy anywhere near a trigger". There are indications that he may have residual psychological damage from his years as a POW. You don't want him near nuclear triggers.
McCain is a close friend of Hilary Clinton's. When they served as senators, they had a drinking contest in Estonia. Their comment: "What happens in Estonia, stays in Estonia".
Mitt Romney may not have perfect "bedside manner" but he is the real deal-the only one who is not in this for the power and fame. He knows how to turn this country around and help America's economy succeed. If we want to save our children and grandchildren financially, ROMNEY IS THE ONLY CHOICE THAT MAKES ANY SENSE.

Hey folks....who's the real scarry?? The media professionals who play and practice their art. Our comments reveal that we are their lawful prey. If we could spend a week with these Republicans and and Democrats we would discover the dupe. Any one of these who become President will inherit "the system"--make "promises" that have no hope of hapening in 4 short years of political life in this country--blame the other side--repeat the process. The good of it all is that we possibly --actually still care about "morality". In spite of the deceit and trickery in many of our professions (political, legal, medical, religious) we Americans still muster up eneough trust to vote.
Both parties seem to endorse the "trickle down" theory for morality. My grandmother used to say "what's in the well comes up in the bucket". That being said, I think I'll go now and work on me. You can join me too if you think it could actually be fun abandoning the media long eneough to discover the truth about or canditates. There's a whole lot more good than bad and the "bad" that we see on TV or in the news paper is just exactly what someone wants us to see.
Peas and Hominy, GH

Romney supporters and his prominent backers in the conservative media dug their own grave. When it appeared that Huck was the main obstacle to the ascension of Romney, they repeatedly accused Huckabee supporters of being stupid, deceived and -- my favorite -- "liberal" (never met a liberal who was pro-life, pro-gun and wanted to abolish the IRS, but, hey, whatever). But now that McCain is set to finish their dream of a Romney nomination, NOW Romney's peeps want Huckabee supporters to line up behind Mitt because McCain is "liberal." Funny how that word is applied to ANYONE except Mitt Romney -- a candidate who has decades of liberal positions he has disavowed in order to seek the GOP nomination. Funny, funny stuff. If Huckabee stays in the race (which it appears he will), McCain will win the GOP nod. And Romney's supporters have nothing to blame but their own misguided political antics.

Mike Huckabee is a wolf is sheep's clothing. For those who believe Huckabee is morally superior to Romney, you are sadly mistaken. Please learn more about the REAL HUCKABEE before thinking of voting for this person.

I also read online that Huckabee is a friend of Mark Foley's. I'm researching this info and if true, I will post another link to that info. This would be disgusing, but not surprising when one really sees the REAL Huckabee.

It's time for Romney to drop out of this race and endorse the most consistent conservative remaining... Huckabee.

Romney is being propped up in the media, but a serious analysis of the electoral votes shows he has NO chance of winning the nomination at this point. He won't play strong enough in the South, and McCain pretty much has much of the West coast wrapped up.

If Romney would get behind Huckabee, who is more consistently conservative than he, we could have a chance to stop McCain AND get a conservative we could be proud of, who truly represents the PEOPLE instead of the entrenched powers, into the White House.

margie, you and other supporters of Governor Romney are giving me deja vu. All the arguments you folks are using against Senator McCain are nearly identical to the half-truths and fear-mongering employed by Lefties against Governor Reagan 28 years ago. What, did you guys find an old copy of the DNC's 1980 campaign playbook on eBay?

If I may elaborate: Folks ridiculed Ronald Reagan's "non-existent" economic skills, too---and then President Reagan presided over the largest peacetime expansion of the U.S. economy in history.

The Dems questioned Governor Reagan's temper, too, and made similarly dark prediction about the nuclear trigger. Remember how mobs of Lefty students on college campuses across the nation repeatedly chanted "Reagan wants war! Reagan wants war!" Then of course, President Reagan went out and won the Cold War---without firing a shot.

And hey, I'm fine with a Republican raising a glass with a Dem. Any GOP President will have to negotiate with and engage in old-fashioned horse trading with Dems in Congress to get things done. That's how things work.

Finally, NICE USE OF ALL CAPS in your post. It's a sure sign of good writing.

I particularly resent the comments below accusing Huckabee of Mormon Bigotry. The reason the Huckabee likes McCain is the same reason that a lot of Huckabee supporters like McCain -- He's a more fundamentally honest person. Secondly, he and Huckabee share a willingness to buck the establishment to do the best thing not just the "right" thing. Romney is a panderer, which is clear to everyone. At the end of the day for Christian conservatives, honesty is more important than a lot of specific policy issues.

Huckabee is another Huey Long politician THE KING FISH. He is equal to Huey Long's corruption as shown by Huckabee's infamous gift receiving as a governor - most notorious was he and his wife's soliciting gifts for their home when exiting the governor's mansion and Huckabee solution to the economy like Huey Long infamous corrupt public works projects says we should build a big road. Huckabee doesn't fool anyone that his objective in staying in the race after all other third and fourth place winners have withdrawn is to stop a Mormon from becoming President. Mormon was the word used by those who persecuted the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Please have the respect to call the world religion by its proper name and not by the hate word from the past. Huckabee attended a closed door poltical meeting in Iowa of the evangelical ministers; a meeting Romney and the media was excluded from. McCain can not win by himself so he has made an arrangement with Huckabee - the McCain lapdog - to keep votes from Romney. If truth were known that was probably the arrangement with McCain's friend Rudy to stay in Florida to keep Florida from Romney.

To call McCain a "fundamentally more honest" person than Romney can only mean one thing - you're lying to yourself. McCain wouldn't even answer the question of whether or not he would vote in favor of McCain/Kennedy (legislation that he co-authored). That my friend, is sad. Then he blasted Mitt for not taking a position on the surge 6 months before it happened. McCain is a hypocrite, liar, and the real flip flopper liberal in this race. If only he wasn't the lovedarling of the media.

Mike Huckabee said: "If Christians don't vote conscience and conviction, and they only vote parties -- if they are purely partisan -- then they really disenfranchise themselves from the very basis upon which they said they were involved in politics.... I'll be very clear: I am Christian first; I am a Republican second. ... my value system is the one thing I have to hold on to. A hundred years from now, which party is in power is not going to make a whole lot of difference, but whether I was true to my moral compass means everything."

This reminds me of Matthew 7:24-27 (MSG) right after Jesus preached the Beatitudes, Love your Enemies, The Lord's Prayer, the Golden Rule and warnings about Judging Others and Wolves in Sheeps Clothing:
"These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock. But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don't work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards."

As a Huckabee supporter, I can explain part of the thinking process behind why many of us (including Gov. Huckabee himself) probably prefer Sen. McCain over Gov. Romney. Romney has endorsed very liberal policies for years. Now suddenly he has changed his tune and SAYS he supports conservative policies. Many of us are very distrustful of his convenient metamorphasis. Sen. McCain has leaned toward the liberal side (which is one reason alot of us don't trust him) but at least he doesn't appear to be changing his positions for the election. I believe anyone who saw the Romney/McCain squabble during the last debate ought to be wondering if either one of these characters is really the best man to lead us. How about Mike Huckabee, an ex-governor with more experience than Romney, more potential to collect Southern votes, and a true conservative record?

Dear Tim,
Ronald Reagan was not a POW, with questionable mental stability.
Ronald Reagan did a marvelous job with the then dysfunctional California budget as governor, before he ran for President.
Ronald Reagan was a governor, not a senator, like McCain. He knew how to govern.
McCain and Reagan actually have very little in common.
But THANK-YOU for the nice writing compliment.

For those who would criticise Mike Huckabee as a liberal, how in the world do you classify a conservative? What does MH have to gain by openly infusing his faith into his campaign? Did he think he would become more popular in this country which has become increasingly anti-christian? Only a man with high moral integrity and strong character would not tone down his beliefs to help him rise in public opinion,. God will hold us responsible for how we vote. Whether our candidate gets elected or not, we have to vote the way God leads us. Too many christians do not take the time to seek Gods will on how to place their vote. Pray till you know! Don't be swayed by what you hear in the media. God knows who we should elect. The Devil is sitting back laughing at us doing his work for him.

Mike Huckabee wants to be like Jesus.
Mitt Romney wants to be like Jesus (he's a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints)
Pick the smartest, most economically experienced follower of Jesus to lead the most powerful country on earth. That's what Jesus would do.
My money is on the Saint.
