LAS VEGAS -- David Axelrod ain't smoking the peace pipe.
On a debate night when Hillary Clinton cited "exuberant" and "uncontrollable" supporters (like Bill Clinton, presumably) for the recent racial flap, Obama's top strategist exhibited plenty of exuberance, although he seemed very much in control.
Speaking to reporters in the Vegas spin room, Axelrod said Obama -- and not Clinton -- deserves credit for the truce after the MLK vs. JFK, "fairy tale" and Bob Johnson crossfire because he made his conciliatory statement an hour before Clinton did on Monday.
"Senator Obama went out and said what he said and Senator Clinton put out hers an hour later," he said.
"I got a call from [Clinton campaign manager] Patti Solis [Doyle], who's a friend of mine, after we made our statement," Axelrod said, adding the truce "was clearly at the instigation of Sen. Obama."
Asked if Clinton would have made nice without Obama's prompting, he replied, "I really don't know."
Howard Wolfson had no comment, saying his boss was focused on the economy today.

Not because it will sound great? We could not win with who started it so we will focus on the bottom line, who ended it? Wow, it must be very important to to get down to the day and hour in a "truce" to see who did what first. That's very important. Not as important as the other side. If we let people think that then maybe, just maybe it would add credence to the the fact that Clinton did not mean to attack race because there would be no point in her conceding at any point. Maybe just maybe and more likely Clinton's original comments were a continuation of this media rat race over change and experience.

The drive-by media is working overtime to pretend the racial fight in the Democrat Party doesn't exist.
The Democrats at the Swamp are doing their part by not reporting the results of last night's Michigan Democrat primary, in which the vote split dramatically along racial lines. CNN reported that 70% of Michigan's black democrats support Obama, only 20% Clinton.

Bruce,
How come you didn't use your Doug Y persona on this post?
Posted by: jethro | January 16, 2008 2:20 PM
Take a hike Bruce...you couldn't care less about anyone of color or women. You're disingenious concern over race should make people sick. You don't even like people with "strange dress". Believe me the only race you care about is the race to get another neo-con in the office or the race to move when "there goes the neighborhood" moves in.

Quite frankly, I don't give a rats ass who came up with the idea. You children need to get on with the countries best interests.

What!
70% of Michigan blacks democrats support Obama (BD), while only 20% Support Hillary (WD)?
Hmmmm? Nope, nothing racist about that.
Pass the popcorn jethro, this is getting good!

As an Obama supporter, I gotta say... It doesn't matter one iota who ended it first. What matters is that everyone was sick of it, and it's over.

Howard Wolfson tries so hard to spin everything...I wonder if he realizes just how hilarious it comes out.

Funny, Barack Obama's name wasn't on the ballot. Only Hillary left hers on. So these numbers are pure speculation. I thought you said polls are not trustworthy bruce, or was that last weeks talking point.

Obama: It was my idea...
Hillary later today: NO, it was MY idea!
Obama tomorrow: No, it was ALWAYS my idea!
Ahh, debate..

Obama camp: Truce was our idea
Can we please find out where the adults went in this campaign?
Posted by: Anonymous | January 16, 2008 4:57 PM
Well Axelrod is trying to spin it because they actually started this flap with the memo accusing Hillary of racial innuendos.

Bruce-
100% of the white voters in the Republican Primary in Michigan voted for a white candidate. Does that mean they're racists too?

Of course the 'truce' was the Obama camp's idea, it was part of the entire plan to deal with SC poll lead softening after NH.
The plan in a nutshell:
1. Scour every Clinton or surrogate speech for a week and find anything remotely spinnable as race controversy;
2. Send outraged surrogates on the major networks to complain at what they feel is inexcusable racism (however flimsy the evidence);
3. Let it echo through the media circus enough to shore up our lead among SC black voters, since without a clear win in SC we're done;
4. Start reconciling immediately so we can be back on our unity (ha ha) message by Feb. 5.
I'm sure Axelrod is pleased and confident in the rapid oblivescence potential of the American public. Still, better go ahead and hit the brakes now, they don't want all of those Reaganites they're courting to actually start thinking Obama is black.

To see the REAL Hillary, listen to her speech to an African-American audience (a few months ago) when she tried to sound like she was from "the 'hood". It is either hysterically funny or pathetic, depending on your mood.
This says more about her "character" than any PR machine can try and churn out.
And people wonder why her negative ratings are among the highest in history....

Natasha here is something you might find interesting.
"MASON CITY, Iowa – Attending church with Sen. Barack Obama here today was a much different experience than one a few weeks ago in a struggling neighborhood in Des Moines.
The congregation of 100 or so here at the First Congregational United Church of Christ was almost entirely white, while the one at Union Missionary Baptist Church was almost completely black.
And so Obama's low-key approach during a five-minute greeting to the gathering was significantly different than the fiery message he delivered in Des Moines or at other black churches he attends."

Do you really want to go there? Do you really want me to ask so who is the real Obama? and proceed to insinuate it says something about character and PR machines (like Obama does not have one)?

Of course the vote in Michigan split down racial lines. The ones that used to support Hillary were fired up by her MLK statement that was conviently twisted to make it appear as if she demeaned his efforts.
Who started the racial nonsense? One should ask who had the most to gain?
Obama could now have black votes that would have gone to Hillary in SC, which could be enough to push him to the finish line.
Then there is the possiblity that Republicans (ROVE Plan) started it to fuel the fire so that they would not have to run against Hillary. Republicans are afraid of Hillary, because they know that they all ready spent millions of dollars trying to discredit her and failed to make anything stick with anyone but the most die-hard conservatives.
Trying to take credit for calling a truce "after" the damage you set out to inflict has hit its target is nothing to be proud of when you are running a campaign based on supposedly bringing people together.

Barack Obama in solving today's problems, is approaching it from another direction. There are many good intentions and ideas being held up in the Senate and Congress and cannot get passed because there is no working majority and because of party division. He realizes that one can offer all the ideas and solutions in the world, but without this working majority, it will come to nill and nothing will get accomplished. He further understands that although we need a revolution in economic, health-care, globalization, education, and voting reforms, among others, very little will get accomplished (the same old results) unless we have a coming together -- a unity of red states, blue states and independents. And he also realizes that though we have had this vision to solve our problems for sometime, however, now is the time to materialize it, the urgency of now!
The people need things accomplished, not just brought to the Senate floor and argued over, only to languish there for years. They want real change. We cannot continue this same cycle of a do-nothing Congress. We cannot continue to offer bread to a hungry nation, only to snatch it back because of party bickering and division. Barack Obama is trying to establish a do-something Congress, instead of the do-nothing Congress.
It is ironic that an earlier Senator from Illinois, Lincoln, came to heal the nation when it was divided by slavery, and now we have another Senator from Illinois in Barack Obama who has come to heal a nation divided by a false sense of separatism and fear by offering a vision of hope and bringing people and this nation together -- as there is more that unites us than that which divides us. And a house divided cannot long stand, let alone get something done. Let us remember that it was a 33 year-old Thomas Jefferson who wrote, When the people fear the government you have tyranny. When the government fears the people you have liberty."
Barack Obama, in establishing a "People's Coalition" will harness the power of the people to capitulate our government officials to work for them and not the special interest groups, wealthy and corporations.
After all, a true leader has to be a leader of all the people, not just some. We have great ideas and no will. That will, however, will come from the people united in a common cause.

To change the subject just a bit, at the end of Tuesday's debate I loved the answers to the last question: 'when did you actually decide to run for the office of President'. Hillary just decided a year ago !

...it might be worth noting that fmr. Pres. Lyndon Baines Johnson's initials are not JFK.

I can honestly say that I have never considered race or gender in my evaluation of the Democratic candidates. It really disturbs me that this is an important factor in a presidential election.
