The Swamp

by James Oliphant

The New England Patriots have defeated all comers this season, and the odds have them doing it again to the New York Giants on Sunday.

But their fiercest opponent lies ahead: Sen. Arlen "Mad Dog" Specter. (Note: Nobody really calls him that.)

Specter is peeved about the NFL destroying tapes involved in the Patriots' infamous "spygate" incident earlier this season, when the team was caught taping the New York Jets' sideline and lost a draft pick for it.

And showing that Big Game hyperbole isn't limited to Arizona, Specter told the New York Times that "The American people are entitled to be sure about the integrity of the game. It’s analogous to the C.I.A. destruction of tapes.”

Or not.

Regardless, Specter has been pushing the commissioner of the National Football League, Roger Goodell, to explain why the tapes were destroyed. And so far the NFL hasnt responded. Anyone who has watched the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee knows he hates being ignored. He may call Goodell down to Washington next month to voice his displeasure in person.

By the way, shouldn't Specter's football nickname be "The Galloping Ghost?" But that's taken.

So a football team destroying tapes = bad, the CIA destroying tapes = okay? Odd country we live in.

You gotta be kidding. Senator Spector has done nothing about:
WMD-gate,
Phlame-gate
Yellow Cake-gate
Torture-gate
wiretap-gate
habeas corpus-gate
Debold-gate
Osama lives-gate
Katrina-gate
Iraq contractors-gate
on..and...on..and..on
But he has time for this!

"SENATOR SPECTOR SPEAKS"

I WANT THOSE TAPES, I WANT TO KNOW IF THE "GEEK SQUAD" WAS USED TO ERASE YET AGAIN ANOTHER EMAIL TO COVER UP LAW BREAKING ACTIVITIES.

WE CAN'T GET THE WHITE HOUSE TO PRODUCE "ERASED" PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS FROM "PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS ACT SERVERS" BUT WE CAN DEFINITELY MADE DEMAND FOR A FOOTBALL TEAM TO FIND THEIRS.

WE CAN'T GET "CONGRESSIONAL SUBPOENAS" ANSWERED ON THE HILL BUT SENATOR MITCHELL CAN GET A DAY ON C-SPAN WITH LOCATED EMAILS AND TESTIMONIES.

SENATOR SPECTOR CAN'T FIND OUT WHO AUTHORIZED GEORGE BUSH HIS ABILITY TO "REMOVE AND SIGN" INTO ORDER ANYTHING HE DOESN'T OR DOES RECOGNIZE IN ANY BILLS CONCERNING NEW LAW.

SENATOR SPECTOR CAN CHALLENGE A SPORTING FRANCHISE FOR PROFIT BUT HE CANT CHALLENGE HIS OWN REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT FOR PROFIT IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

MERE PHONY ACHEIVEMENT JUST LIKE "CHERTOFF" IS.

WHY IS IT THAT CONGRESS CAN ASK AMERICAN CITIZENS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE LAW OF THE LAND BUT THEY CAN'T SEEM TO ASK DICK CHENEY, CONDI RICE, FRED FIELDING, OR DAVID ADDINGTON "ONE QUESTION UNDER OATH"

WHY IS IT THAT CONGRESS HAS NOT SENT THE "SGT AT ARMS AND ARRESTED KARL ROVE AND HARRIET MIERS.

WHY IS IT THAT KARL ROVE CAN GET UP ON CSPAN AND MAKE DEMAND FOR SENATOR HILLARY CLINTONS "1ST LADY EMAILS" BUT ALL OF CONGRESS CANNOT GET HIM TO PRODUCE ONE EMAIL RELATING TO "PURGING OF THE PROSECUTORS"

WHY IS IT THAT OH NEVER MIND, GO ON ARLENE HOLD AMERICA HOSTAGE WHILE BEING EAVESDROPPED ON, WIRETAPPED AND DATA MINED BY GEORGE BUSH/DICK CHENEY AND ALL HIS MEN.

WHAT A JOKE!

Thank you, Arlen! Know nail those cheating Ma$$holes to the wall!

Notice anonymous' (who shouldn't be allowed to post) clear democrat playbook technique in that earlier post. It's a "scandal" if a democrat whines about something and you place the word "gate" at the end of it.

Watch me do it: "That Obama really needs to explain himself for Rezkogate." Oops, is there too much evidence of wrongdoing in that one? Do they all need to be crazy and substanceless?

Sounds like the Honorable Senator forgot to take Ex-Lax berore leaving the "HOUSE".

When is McCain going to explain the favors he's been selling to the telecom companies, Jeff?

http://wonkette.com/336370/mccain-and-a-telecom-bill

Dirty before. Dirty now.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, to discover that telecom companies contribute to political campaigns. Just shocked!

Hey, guess who else contributes to political campaigns, indicted slumlords!

Hey, finally someone with some clout is speaking up about the cheating that got the Pats to the Super Bowl. There's a lot of money riding on this game, and it's just too fishy that Goodell and NFL leaders gave NE a pass on getting busted and then destroyed the evidence. Specter should call Kraft and Belchak to testify while he's at it.

With everything we trust to our politicians to resolve Arlen should get to all those before he takes up time worrying about destroyed NFL tapes. If Goodell wouldn't have destroyed them would Arlen be investigating whether he gave them back to the Patriots?? Arlen watch the game with your Steeler and Eagle friends and then go to Washington and concentrate on your job

What's next? Maybe we should bring in any baseball player that has ever reached second base to ask them what they know about stealing catchers signs. Let's ask Gaylord Perry about spitballs. Maybe we could bring in front office people from the 49's, Steelers and Bronco's championship teams and they can explain to congress about how they were caught cheating the salery cap rules. Enough already!

Why should ANYONE pay any attention to the slimy slick mouth of one of the Senate's most undependable members?

He had no business questioning the NFL about its internal actions. There was no violation of any law, just simply a league rule. And since when did league rules become the province of the United States Senate?

Tell Specter to stick his nose in Government business where it belongs and stay the hell out of private commercial business.

The Senate is one of the most disorganized groups in this country; it would do all of those senators to just start minding the business of the country and stop meddling in business affairs.

It's amazing how many jealous people there are out there - just appreciate greatness for what it is! Patriots will go 19-0 without cheating or any of that nonsense, and I feel lucky to witness them do it - regardless of which team I cheer for.
Pennsylvanian's: I think your Senator should be concentrating on issues a little bit more important than this - maybe it's time to send a message in the voting booth!!!

I think Arlen is right to go after them first.
Here is my list of important issues Arlen should address.

1. Pats cheating
2. Over priced food at the stadium
3. Jay walkers headed for the stadium
4.Those who spit and littler around the stadium
5. People who look at eachother crossed eyed or say mean things to eachother.

I would put these lasts ones way on the bottom of the list to be dealt with at a latter date if at all.

6. Roid abuse in the NFL
7. Drunks fans in the stadium who are a pain in the neck to other fans.
8.FANS WHO GET STINKING DRUNK AT THE GAMES, GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR AND ENDANGER EVERYONE ON THE ROAD.

It is obvious this guy has way to much time on his hands. Since that's the case I wounder what he should really be doing for the people who elected him.

Sen. Arlen authored or co-authored the "single bullet theory" while a member of the Warren Commission which attempted to disprove a second shooter in Dealy Plaza. Ask Sen. Spector about the House Select Committee on Assassinations - 1976. They determined that enhanced dictabelt recordings of the Dallas PD showed a "probable" fourth or fifth shot" lending credibility to the existence of another assassin, and thus a conspiracy. If the good senator is interested in fact finding, open up the sealed JFK assassination records for the world to see, and let us know who's payroll he was on in 1963??? No one in their right mind bought that whitewash performed by the Warren Commission.

Yawnnn !!!! so once a dunce always a dunce -- nice going speck ---.

Am I mistaken or was it the NFL who destroyed the tapes and not the Patriots?
And get a clue, it was all because Mangini had a hissy fit becase the Pats asked him to stop taping last January in Gillette and he thought he'd get litte payback. The location of the taping equipment was the issue. How does that negate a perfect season? The game is played on the field. You people are ludcrious. Get over it and worry about things that really matter such as our sons being killed and maimed in Iraq, the cost of living, no health insurance etc.

Does the Senator not have anything else to do? I am trying to organize a writing campaign. Go to http://specter.senate.gov/public/ or go to your local senator's website and do the same.

Cut and paste the following:
Dear Senator Specter,
I am writing regarding the recent disclosures about your interest in the Patriot’s “Spygate” issue. Your letter from November 2007 specifically asked Commissioner Goodell about the Patriots stealing Philadelphia Eagles’ signals during the January 2005 Superbowl. You are a Philadelphia Eagles fan. This certainly calls into question the motivation for your inquires about this matter in the first place. Additionally, you are calling into question the league’s antitrust exemption. This seems to be an abuse of power on your part. It is especially discouraging because you are making a point to speak publicly about this two days before the Superbowl. Again, what is your motivation for doing this? Does the United States Senate not have anything more important to deal with? Young men and women are dying in Iraq, the economy appears to be headed for a recession, and our healthcare system has major issues, but you are very concerned about the destruction of some tapes related to a GAME? You have indicated that you will call Goodell to testify in front of the Judiciary Committee at some point regarding this matter. This means United States Senators will be taking time to question Goodell about a game, while our troops put their lives on the line in Iraq. This is simply a travesty, and it is an utter embarrassment to the Senate. I ask you to explain the motivation of your inquiries, and why you do not have anything more important to be involved in. I am deeply concerned about what this says regarding the United States Congress.
Sincerely,

XXXXXXXXX

Too bad "our man Arlen Specter" from Pennsylvania is concerned about football tapes. We are former constituents of Specter and wonder why he didn't worry about saving the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where thousands of people lost their jobs and had to find other ways to support their families and themselves. For the last 8 years, we reside in Massachusetts and happy to say that we are proud of our New England Patriots. By the way, the NFL destroyed the tapes not the Patriots. Maybe Specter should realize that and how the Patriots have gone 18-0 when they couldn't have taped any games after their alleged "Spygate" incident. Maybe Specter needs to be aiding the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and listen more to his constituents.

Go PATS!!!

Comcast Cable is the second largest contributor to "Senator Spectre". Comcast cable is based in Pennsylvania and has contributed a few bucks to Spectre's Senate race. In fact, during the last election cycle, Comcast ponied up $101,750 to his campaign, the Senator's second largest contributor after Blank Rome LLP.
FOLLOW THE MONEY!! Comcast Cable is in a huge war with the NFL network for broadcasting rights. Why bring up some voodoo senate investigation 3 days before the superbowl?
Let us also remember that in 2005 he was yammering about how the Eagles' handled the T.O. non-playing and his leaving. Then he backed off. Showboat.

PHILADELPHIA - Sen. Arlen Specter backed off a threat to have a Senate subcommittee investigate whether the NFL and the Philadelphia Eagles violated antitrust laws in their handling of Terrell Owens.
Specter, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Tuesday that he talked to lawyers in the Department of Justice about the issue.
Follow The Money! SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) is a fictional terrorist organization featured in the British James Bond novels by Ian Fleming,. Led by evil genius and supervillain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the organization first formally appeared in the novel Thunderball and in the movie Dr. No.

Deep Throat: No, heh, but it's touching. Forget the myths the media's created about the Patriots. The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.
Bob Woodward: Hunt's come in from the cold. Supposedly he's got a lawyer with $25,000 in a brown paper bag.
Deep Throat: Follow the money.
Bob Woodward: What do you mean? Where?
Deep Throat: Oh, I can't tell you that.
Bob Woodward: But you could tell me that.
Deep Throat: No, I have to do this my way. You tell me what you know, and I'll confirm. I'll keep you in the right direction if I can, but that's all. Just... follow the money.

So all you loyal pats fans; it's ok if everyone cheats in any sports? You just don't get it do you? That means none of the stats mean anything from now on huh? Too bad cheaters don't win in the end. Smiling, the Giants and Eli have shown you that huh?

We need to throw Specter out of office. Our country have more pressing needs. The News Media needs to make this an Issue and Examine the Senators who is wasting Time.
we need to Examine many other issues
Enron justice of the shareholders robbed, Nardellie of Home Depot walking away with 250 Million as Home Depot stock is a all time low.
GET THE HINT!!

I really cannot believe all the attention being paid to this "spygate" stuff by Congress. Spector just happens to be a Steeler or Eagles fan. Hmmm? This seems to be a clear and gross misuse of his power as a Senator. It's discusting at best. There are SO many more important things that he needs to be taking issue with. Please Pennsylvania....get him out of office! I will gladly contribute to ANYONE who opposes him in the primary season of his next election! As for the Patriots, they'll continue to beat Pittsburg and the Eagles...with or without videotape!
