George W. Bush was a governor before becoming president, and sat through many of the assemblies of the nation’s governors like the one – his last as president – that he will address tonight.
And Sunday night at the White House, over a state dinner of Hudson River duck, the soon-to-be lame duck president raised a glass in toast to the governors dining with him.
“You know, I've developed a unique perspective on this event,’’ Bush told his guests last night in the State Dining Room. “For six years, I sat and watched the president speak. For eight years, I was the president and spoke.
“And next year,’’ he said to laughter, “I'll be watching on C-SPAN.’’

Tonight, after a day of picture-taking on the grounds of the White House, the former governor of Texas will address the nation’s governors at the National Building Museum in Washington.
“I value our governors because our governors are some of the nation's foremost policy entrepreneurs,’’ Bush told them at dinner last night. “I appreciate the sacrifice your families have made to serve America.
“It was in that spirit that Teddy Roosevelt hosted the first governors meeting here at the White House 100 years ago,’’ the president said. “I can't imagine what they were thinking about what America would look like a hundred years ago. And I'm not sure what people will think a hundred years from now.
“But I do know it makes sense to put wise policy in place in the meantime,’’ Bush said, “so America can remain prosperous and strong and free.’’
They opened with wild asparagus broth, and Beringer Chardonnay “Reserve” 2005. They dined on Hudson River duck with port sauce, French beans and whipped sweet potatoes, served with Sebastiani Cabernet “Secolo” 2005. They ate salads of roasted hearts of palm with grapefruit filets and citrus dressing.
For dessert: warm caramel-orange torte and walnut ice cream, and Stone Hill Late Harvest Vignoles 2005
Vince Gill and Amy Grant entertained the governors in the East Room. Gill was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame last year. A member of the Grand Ole Opry, the singer-songwriter has sold more than 22 million albums, and earned 18 Country Music Association wards and 18 Grammy Awards.
His wife, Amy Grant, has been releasing albums since she was 15 and, the White House notes, “helped put contemporary Christian music on the map.’’ She has earned three multi-platinum, six platinum and four gold albums, and won six Grammy Awards and numerous Dove Awards.

George, George, George ... he was in a cocoon before he was president, during his presidency, and will be after his presidency. He will never know what an unaware, arogant, stubborn, incompetent, leader he was. His judgement in his selection of personnel speaks volumns: Chaney, Rumsfield, Gonzolas, Meyers, Rove, and don't forget Brownie.
