Okay, I'll admit it. I'm late on this one. The Smoking Gun had this story two days ago about brothers-in-law who got into a fight over politics with the one who supported Sen. Hillary Clinton eventually stabbing the one who supported Sen. Barack Obama.
But I just learned about it and figured, if it was news to me, it might be news to a lot of readers of The Swamp too.
Here's what the Smoking Gun reported which is straight off the police report:
FEBRUARY 25--Meet Jose Antonio Ortiz. The Pennsylvania man allegedly stabbed his brother-in-law in the stomach after the pair quarreled about their respective support of Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. According to cops, Ortiz, 28, stabbed Sean Shurelds last Thursday night in the kitchen of an Upper Providence Township home. According to a criminal complaint, a copy of which you'll find here, the 41-year-old Shurelds, an Obama supporter, told Ortiz that the Illinois senator was "trashing" Clinton (apparently in regard to recent primary and caucus results). Ortiz, a Clinton supporter, replied that "Obama was not a realist." While not exactly fighting words, the verbal political tiff led to some mutual choking and punching. And, allegedly, a stabbing in the abdomen. Ortiz, pictured in the mug shot...was charged with a felony aggravated assault count and two misdemeanors and jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail. Shurelds was flown to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition. (2 pages)
The police report provides further details, such as: the alleged stabber's hands were wet when the police arrived on the scene which, Ortiz explained, was because he was washing dishes. That's right. His brother in law Shaun Shurelds was bleeding profusely from an abdominal wound and the accused stabber found time to do some house chores. Maybe he should've put them in the dishwasher where the police found the knife they believe was the weapon Ortiz allegedly used.
At least they were fighting over something important like politics. I remember once reading an old Chicago Tribune clip about one brother who stabbed another to death in a fight over a pork chop. I haven't been able to look at a pork chop the same way since.

Liberals will punch and stab their opponents. Conservatives on the other hand will throw money at their opponents or make other people fight for them.

Typical liberal stuff.

Yep, this is news to me. Wow.

This is no later than most "Swamp" posts. About the only time they're on a breaking story is when the Obama press office sends them a fawning release that they post unedited ahead of time.
Sam Zell, who's saying all the right things about fixing the broken culture at Tribune company, recently said that it's time to lose some of the dead weight at his company's Washington bureau:
Trib's "bloated" DC bureau is "economically unsupportable"
That's what Sam Zell told DC-based reporters from Tribune papers. Zell said the competing "fiefdoms" are an embarrassment, and that the bureau's structure is "unsupportable." Phil Rosenthal writes: "While he made it clear he sees it as a Tribune Co. bureau, not a collection of Washington bureaus, and wants it smaller, he indicated he has no specific idea what the bureau's ideal size would be or how it should work.
He's dead on that they're an embarassment.

So pathetic when you can't respond to the message and have to attack the messenger. You are an embarassment Jeff.

What's the big deal? He stabbed someone who voted for a Muslim terrorist and the "victim" probably gave money to this said terrorist. I say we give Mr. Ortiz a medal for doing his patriotic duty to kill terrorists or those who support them.

Too bad... Clinton just suffered a double-whammy: she lost Jose Antonio Ortiz as a Pennsylvania voter (can't vote from prison) AND she lost Jose Antonio Ortiz as a Latino voter.
On the other hand, he showed that Clinton people are "fighters".

What was left out of this piece is that Ortiz is a registered Republican.
figures.

Nick - are you serious?
dave - really - are you serious?

Dave, there's nothing patriotic about fabricating lies or spreading unsubstantiated rumor about any of the candidates. While our nation's founders and our troops throughout the ages of our great nation have secured your right to say what you please, even if it's not true, you dishonor everyone who fought for this right, and you dishonor all of us with your reactionary ignorance. If you have some proof, ANY proof for your accusations, present it now. Otherwise we will take your inability to offer us any evidence as proof of your lies, your ignorance and your inability to face the truth.

Dave...wrong stop. The crazy house is via the NEXT exit.
Posted by: Michael | February 27, 2008 11:50 AM
Charles,
You want proof Obama is a terrorist? His father was Muslim, he went to a Madrassa for 4 years, his middle name is Hussein, he hangs out at a suspect church, he will not wear a flag lapel, he does not put his hand over his heart during the pledge or the national anthem, and we have a picture of him showing his true allegiance to Islam. What more proof do you need? A receipt for an AK-47, some bullets, and some C4? The world has changed.

I have pictures of Dave wearing a Turban selling speed to Limbaugh....

Dave,
Your parody of a message that a far right-wing moron might post is dead-on. The stupidity of the post makes me think that you used an acting technique called "The Method" in which you inhabit the skin of your character so completely you, in effect, become a brain-dead, non-thinking moron yourself. Keep up the hilarious work.
Posted by: john | February 27, 2008 12:32 PM
I think the stabbed brother in law should sue HRC! The brother in law who did the stabbing was acting as an agent of HRC and therefore HRC is liable for his actions.
HRC is now trying to murder people through surrogates!

Dave: George Bush and the Bush family are huge supporters of the Saudis, and likewise the Saudis are huge supporters of the Bush family. Perhaps you have forgotten where 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers came from. Moreover, it's well known that the vast majority of al-Qaida members infiltrating Iraq and attacking Iraqis and U.S. soldiers are from Saudi Arabia.
So who's the terrorist and the supporter of terrorist?
Posted by: TJ | February 27, 2008 12:51 PM
Dave.....I thought at first you just needed to rant. Then you posted again and I realize your just a moron.
Posted by: bill r. | February 27, 2008 12:57 PM
I thought I got passionate about politics - but wow! And I agree with everyone else, Dave just reads out of the Republican/Fox playbook and obviously doesn't know how to research or think for himself. Sad to think that people this ignorant might actually vote - but then again, probably how Bush won two terms!

Actually, Jackson I have no opinion whatsoever on the story but if you want to draw attention to two democrats getting into a stabbing match than more power to you.
You're the pathetic one if you can't understand that I wasn't "attacking" any messenger but simply posting Zell's very newsworthy words in response to Frank James' comments that "Okay, I'll admit it. I'm late on this one. The Smoking Gun had this story two days ago about brothers-in-law who got into a fight over politics with the one who supported Sen. Hillary Clinton eventually stabbing the one who supported Sen. Barack Obama."
It's not an "attack" to post very truthfully that The Swamp is never ahead of the news with most of these stories. It's just the truth.
Go back to being the pathetic embarassment that you are, Jackson, and just leave the posting of relevant news stories to those who know the score, okay?

O.K. SO, MOST PEOPLE WOULD RATHER BE STONE COLD CONCRETE BEFORE THEY SUBMIT TO BLACK FACES ON US CURRENCY, I AGREE. BUT, THAT IS STILL A WAYS OFF, DON'T YOU THINK? BOOKER T WASHINGTON ON THE POSTAGE STAMP GOT US THIS FAR. IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME BEFORE THE FACES OF BLACKS APPEAR ON US CURRENCY. THE VALUE OF THE NOTES? TOILET PAPER? JUST ASK KIMBERLY-CLARK OR CROWN ZELLERBACK, THEY WOULD KNOW THE POTENTIAL VALUE OF THE NOTES WHEN BLACK FACES APPEAR ON YOUR DENOMINATIONAL NOTES. DOES THAT SOUND STINKY? FEEL STINKY? LOOKS STINKY? MAYBE IT IS JUST ANOTHER STINKY STORY. NO ONE SAID IT HAD TO BE TRUE OR THE TRUTH. LETS NOT BRING GOD OR JESUS INTO THE STINKY PART.

This story shows the sharp divide between democrats and republicans.
Republicans have guns.
LOL

"Perhaps you have forgotten where 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers came from."
TJ's post here is an example of the democrats version of "acceptable" muslimphobia and hate. Another example can be found in the brouhaha over Dubai Ports World trying to buy control of several US ports. Despite the fact that DPW is an international company with no ties to terrorism the democrats were angrily against it but supposedly not racist.
The rule that democrats go by is it's okay to vilify and foster hate of muslims, but only so long as it fosters their party's political agenda. Similar forms of this type of "acceptable" hate from the self-proclaimed party of inclusion include anything George Wallace has ever said and the banning of the US Marine Corps from Berkeley, Calif. Remember, hate of ANY group is a-okay to a democrat so long as their political agenda is served by it.

For further proof that the Swamp is late with everything, I offer you the death of William F. Buckley, Jr. The article had been updated at least twice on the ChiTrib's main page and is HUGE news in Washington, yet the Swamp has nothing.
There were several swamp posts on Molly Ivins' death so you can't say that partisan columnists and commentators' deaths aren't considered news by The Swamp. Nope, they're just late as usual.

Dave, Dave, Dave.
How sad for you, that you are so afriad that Senator Barack H. Obama will actually, rightfully WIN the Democratice nomination that you would fabricate lies, lies and more lies.
Dave, there is nothing to be afraid of. There are no monstaer in the closet or under your bed.

Hey Dave, take a look at a photo of Pres. GHW Bush endorsing Sen. McCain. Neither are wearing US flag lapel pins.
Does that lead you to question their patriotism? Does that make you think they might be terrorists? Just wondering...
The world has changed...and the days of the prejudice & bigotry you are exhibiting are ending.

Just where does a US Senator get these items to resell? How many trips has he made overseas for these sales?
PS: It is against the Flag Code to wear a copy of the flag as jewelry, on clothing etc. unless you are in the military.

Ahh ... these blogs restore my faith in humanity's ability to put aside their differences and come together. Such a sense of kindness and courtesy we provide to one another. Thanks, everyone. When I kiss my daughter when I get home tonight, I will think of all of you and say to her, "You know what sweetie? We're going to be all right because deep down people care about things that really matter." Have to go wipe my tears of joy.

Jeff,
I don't care who is the first to break a story. I care about who carries the story the is supported by more facts.
Posted by: jackson | February 27, 2008 3:40 PM
Hi Dave,
I am really relying on you to demonstrate that conservatives actually know the difference between objective, logically developed proof and unfounded, illogical conjecture. I asked you for proof of Obama being a terrorist and you replied with an array of unconnected and unsubstantiated speculation. Let me clarify what I mean and offer you some analogies.
You mention Obama's father is Muslim and therefore Obama is a terrorist. There's no connection or logic here. To suggest there is a connection would be like saying that anyone with a Christian father believes, or their Christian fathers believe, that it was just of the Christian Church to jail Galileo for saying the earth orbits the sun, something the Christian Church actually did. The Christians who jailed Galileo are very different Christians from a very far away time and intellectual space than the Christians most of us know ourselves. There's no logic or connection here, and to suggest so is without merit or perspective. Do you see what I mean?
Similarly, you suggest that Obama is a terrorist because his middle name is Hussein. By your logic, John McCain, who shares the name 'John' with John Wayne Gasey, has also raped and murdered more than 20 young boys. Not so. Do you see what I mean by illogical and unfounded connections?
I am asking you one more time to provide proof of Obama being a terrorist, not just the disjointed speculation you have offered us so far. Please. We all know there are considerate, educated and clear thinking conservatives out there. Please show us the best of what conservatives have to offer by producing the proof I assume you have that Obama is a terrorist.

Jeff displays his cluelessness yet again.
The Swamp is not there to "break" stories. It was never meant to be your one stop news source. It is an opportunity for the Trib Washington bureau staff to offer further reflections on news stories both big and small, and to provide a forun for reader discussion.
Get a clue. You're starting to sound like Bruce.

Maybe John should check out the definition of libel. Forward those comments to Obama.
It is a sad representation of what we have become when you read comments on any story on any given day. It does not take long before someone posts a comment on any story that is rude. Some people can find something negative to say about everything.
I am waiting for someone to find something negative to say about the pork chop which was mentioned at the end of the story. Maybe those two brothers got into the fight because the pork chop was ridiculing them.
Posted by: Mike | February 27, 2008 4:21 PM
I never said it was here to break news. I said other blogs were beating it to the news of the day. If the newspaper industry isn't going to do blogging right maybe they should just leave it to the people who can devote the time to it to do just that. You know, bloggers.
Posted by: Jeff | February 27, 2008 4:37 PM
Jeff: Actually, you have me all wrong. I believe Americans must love Muslims immensely since we've spent nearly two trillion dollars and counting fighting to liberate two Muslim countries, Iraq and Afghanistan. Moreover, Pakistan, a predominately Muslim country is supposedly our key ally in the war on terror. That's why I can't understand why some Republicans, like Bill Cunningham, find it useful to demonise Barack "Hussein" Obama for the background of his father - his mother of course was white and from Kansas no less.
If all Muslims deserve to be painted with the same brush as the 9/11 hijackers, why are we spending so much in blood and treasure to liberate and rebuild Muslims countries?

Senator Obama is a Christian and a patriotic American. He represents the best of America. His Kansas roots, a grandfather who fought in WW 2, working as a community organizer helping the poor, being the first AA editor of the Harvard Law Review and he is a devoted father of two small children and husband.
