Despite pressure from Sen. Barack Obama, the Clinton campaign said Friday that it wouldn't not release Sen. Hillary Clinton's tax returns unless she secures the Democratic nomination.
The news was greeted by harsh rejoinder from Obama's campaign “Why should Democratic voters have to wait until after the primary campaign is over to find out important information about Senator Clinton's finances that Senator Obama has already disclosed?" said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor.
"For someone who claims to be fully vetted, hiding a campaign loan from voters until after Super Tuesday and refusing to release your tax returns until after the primary doesn't seem like the best way to prove that there are no surprises for the Republicans to find once they start digging,” Vietor said.
Vietor was referring to Clinton's revelation this week that she had loaned $5 million from her personal monies to her campaign. The elephant in the room, of course, is the fortune amassed by former President Clinton from speaking fees, book royalties, and his other business endeavors, and whether Hillary Clinton will tap into that money if the gap between her resources and Obama's persists.
Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson referred reporters to Clinton's Senate disclosure forms, which lists sources of income for both Hillary and Bill Clinton and provides some information about the value of their investments. The most recent one covers 2006. On her financial disclosure, Clinton said their combined net worth was somewhere around $10 million to $25 million.
Wolfson again said that it was Obama who was not being forthcoming, saying the Illinois senator still hadn't revealed the full nature of his ties to indicted Chicago real estate developer and fundraiser Antoin "Tony" Rezko.

Wolfson sounds more and more like Eddie Haskell every time he whines to the press.
The candidate and her slime ball disbarred agent for the sultanate of Dubai spouse should immediately release their tax records!
What are the Clintons hiding? With all the sleaze that has sloughed off their backs, they should have an accounting staff capable of masking most of the incriminating transactions.
Of course, if Hil keeps her records all jumbled up in a HSU box, it may take a while to dechiper the Clintons twisted trail.

Just add this to the long list of Clinton secrets that the media seem reluctant to pursue: Hillary's health records; Her papers from her failed health care initiative; Her papers covering her time in the White House; Her Whitewater billing records (later "discovered" in the WH); the Clinton Foundation's list of donors; Bill's "consulting" records involving foreign governments. Never have the media been so milquetoast regarding the lives of a presidential candidate. This is carrying media bias a bit too far.

Nothing but secrecy from the Clintons. Still waiting for them to release their White House documents. We need to know what the so-called 35 years of experience entail.

Whew!!
That pot you are stirring really stinks, Sherise!!!
Lets not stink up the White House with it, eh?
Take it out of here and get rid of it!

She has released all the documents that are required. There's no need for anything additional to be released at this point.
Obama is once again playing the saint, but really trying to take the focus off some of his shady.

Why should we have to wait until after the primaries?! That's crazy, we need absolute transparency in these candidates in order to make an informed decision. Who wants a candidate that is backed by Washington special interests and corporate interests? She will be beholden to them if she becomes president. I began as a Hillary supporter but she has absolutely lost my vote through the negative and cynical campaign she is running. I'm glad I changed my mind before Feb.5! I feel so strongly against her campaign that I will vote Green Party if she is nominated and I know I am not alone.

Clinton camp is entitled to release documents as the law permits. There are following the rules.

Obama's position plays to one of his strengths, his passion for transparency and ethical reform in our government, and it stands in direct contrast to HRC’s record.
This is the very reason Obama consistently mentions his "grassroots" efforts because for one year, this man has had to scratch and claw for every poll number, for every advantage, for every vote that came his way. He does not have $5 million sitting in the bank to infuse into his campaign.
So he is rightfully taking pride in the fact that he has been able to overcome the pundits who said he could never win taking donations $50 bucks at a time; the cynics who said he needed PAC money, lobbyist money, blood money! All the naysayers and the detractors, who wanted him to fail, who feared his straight (and eloquent) talk, his earnest manners, and his TRANSPARENCY!!
When you're supposedly inevitable like HRC, you can take positions like "I don't have to turn over my tax returns, my White House papers, or my Wellesley papers." Well, now that the "ship of inevitably" has begun to sink like the Titanic, let's see how many hardline positions Hillary can take. SHE's the one who needs to be vetted. (And if you think for a minute Bill's dealings will not be vetted if she gets the nomination, you're fooling yourself. Once she injected him into the campaign, his dealings SINCE he left the White House are fair game.
Bob-- you're right about one thing: phew! I definitely smell a skunk . . .
in a pantsuit!

I feel like Hillary supporters do whatever they can to ignore the fact that Hillary has voted for the Iraq war several times. That is a shame to the democratic party because there is a lot of blood & money on that vote. Sure, it would be great to see a woman president because they have been oppressed in the past, but compared to African Americans, women have had it much better (not that race and gender should be a determining factor anyways... but unfortunately people usually identify themselves heavily along these lines). And lastly, as someone who studies writing & rhetoric, I notice how the Clinton strategists play the feminist card to the max (i.e. proclaiming to America in a somber mood that she had to loan her own campaign five million dollars). This persuasion tactic really stirred up the fact that men have had better financial opportunities in the past and to no surprise it worked because her campaign raised six million dollars in the next two days after that. Oh and- I will NEVER let the following belief of mine be swayed: Although I think Hillary would make a fine president, Barack Obama, without a doubt, would make just as good of one and is positively more electable for the democrats in November.

Posted by: Larry A. Garcia | February 8, 2008 7:02 PM
Heck, I'm still trying to find out why she didn't read the Iraq Intelligence Report on WMD. Only the 100 senators were allowed to read the report so that they would be fully informed before the vote. She claims she was "fully briefed". And what did she mean when she commented last may that "young people think the word work is a four letter word"? Now she is trying to court the very people she dissed just 8 months ago. On top of that ,I heard her use at a rally today,"YES WE CAN". The Clintons really know no shame. They are just another dysfunctional family, the only difference is that they are trying to circumvent the constitution of the United States.

Sherise,
I think you forgot offshore bank accounts. That has something to do with taxes.
The other part,
For all the complaints and whining about Gov. Romney being RICH and spending HIS money, where are all the Socialists here complaining about the Clintons being RICH.
Bias isn't the word, I believe the Freedom of the Press to NOT tell the truth or find out the truth is the problem.

What's not to like?
Forget about the Special Interest Fluffing, continued devaluation of the American Dollar (aka New World Peso), no organic growth or jobs and the fact your great-great grandchildren will be born in debt.

Like every other Clintocrat out there, whenever your Fearless Leader Billary is in trouble you jump to something childish like a pot joke. Sherise made a logical point about how the media panders to Billary Clinton and how most Americans, such as yourself, are too lazy or stupid to take the initiative and research your candidates background; instead, you choose to listen to the Boob Tube and follow whatever it tells you to do.

The Clinton's still have a lot to answer for. They have been very secretive since they came into power. Their both worth millions of dollars why has't she dipped more into her personal wealth. Begging the electorate for money is really ludicrous And whats worse is the little people, the ones that can least afford it are the ones that are donating. Go figure. In addition to that she really don't give a tinkers damm about the common people.

two major Chicago Daily papers have spent untold time and money trying to find more aout the Rezko issue--
Rezko is a sleezebag who glommed onto an up and coming politcal star and Obama didn't realize this
In the meantime there is NO evidence of any wrongdoing on Obama's part, there is no evidence or Obama doing any favors for Rezko and all the money related to anyone related to Rezko - which total was in the high $200.0 has been returned
Maybe there is no more --
both of these same Chicago newspapers endorsed Sen Obama -- they must be okay with it
NOW: compare that to TNR article on Clinton's top 10 sleeziest donors--

"She has released all the documents that are required."
Now isn't that something we'd like to change: politicians being only as transparent as they are required to be by law. Obama has been much more forthcoming with voters.
When the next president takes office, it will be very tempting to start right where Bush left off in terms of executive power. We need someone who is going to resist the temptation to be secretive and manipulative; I think I know who that is.

Why do we keep believing that HRC has 35 years experience when she refuses to release the 8 years of docs while in the White House? That brings her down to 27 and don't get me started on the embellishments of those!!
Posted by: Susan | February 8, 2008 9:09 PM
Richard,
Here is what Obama was busy with while HRC was shoring up her war chest that she won't disclose.
During the first (8) eight years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced:
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded:
**the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law),
**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law),
**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law),
**The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more."

We will become more interested when Hillary starts spending your money and garnishing your wages and raising your taxes in order to support her heavy handed Hillary Care government take over. Then think back how she overspent her own campaign on the bet she would be coronated and wasn't. That's how she will be in office.

Posted by: Michelle | February 8, 2008 9:55 PM
I would point to the 8:53 comment above: the Chicago powers have been vetting Rezko pretty thoroughly, have found nothing to hang Obama, and have endorsed him.
Her tax returns are a horse of a different color--they exist. I do not see how one can argue that she needs her privacy on this until she has the nomination sewn up--whatever I may think of the media glare on politicians' private lives (or Britney's), the White House is not the place for people hoping for privacy in their dealings. Don't try to tell me this hasn't occurred to someone in the Clinton camp.

I was in the dilemma to vote for Senator Clinton or Obama. But now learning the intention of Obama about the Senator Clinton tax released I think this is too much. The Times of London, UK, does the investigative work on Tony Rezko and Obama the DNC Swamp/Tribune reporters won't:
"An undeclared $3.5 million payment from a corrupt Iraqi-British businessman has landed Barack Obama's former fundraiser behind bars. The payment, disclosed in court papers, is the first time that Obama's long-serving bagman Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a Syrian immigrant to the United States, has been linked to Nadhmi Auchi, the Iraqi-born billionaire who is one of Britain's richest men. The relationship is a potential embarrassment for Obama, who has made his opposition to the Iraq war a central plank of his campaign. Court papers describe Mr. Rezko as a close friend of Mr. Auchi. The two are involved in a large Chicago land development together. The Times has discovered state documents in Illinois recording that Fintrade Services, a Panamanian company, lent money to Mr. Obama's fundraiser in 2005. Fintrade's directors include Auchi's wife. The property developer has been condemned by Hillary as a "slum landlord." According to prosecution documents Rezko tried to persuade unnamed Illinois officials to help Auchi get a U.S. visa after he was convicted of fraud in France. Obama's aides deny that he was approached. The Chicago businessman has already been an embarrassment to Obama's campaign. Obama tried to dampen criticism by paying $150,000 to charity to make up for donations from Rezko at a time when he was known to be under investigation."

*Thanks China*
Barack had nothing to speak of as far as money, but now he has a mansion.

I have only the utmost respect for Hillary Clinton. I believe with her there will be change for the better. Change for the better! We are unable to become a united one party Obama then we would have no democracy. I believe that would be a dictatorship and we need the check and balance system both parties offer. You can influence the kids with your juvenile videos, but more mature people can see through you. Obama you are a real show person with your suave unique self and a wonderful speaker, however sometimes things are too good to be true and I feel you fit that description and are superficial. Hillary is way more qualified for the job as President. I'll take experience over entertainment any day! Go HRC

Patty says it's not anyone's business how much they made. OK, but it might be the Attorney General's business WHO they made it from. So if the name Jim McDougal shows up, or Frank Giustra, or Norman Hsu (try googling these names), it would be all of our business. How about if the people who already gave $4600 were involved in Clinton's income? Wouldn't that be a campaign finance issue?
Maybe Bill Clinton can show up on the Senate floor and wag his finger and Hillary's current ethics problem for fake financial disclosures to Congress will go away.

I'm always surprised at the ignorance of Hillary supporters. Women actually believe a woman who trades tears for votes, plays poor so her truly poor supporters feel guilty, lives with a chronic breast grabber, has little more experience than making backroom deals in Washington, panders to special interests and is more secretive than Bush. She even voted with Bush on the war so what's difference?
Posted by: Susie | February 9, 2008 2:06 AM
"She has released all the documents that are required. There's no need for anything additional to be released at this point."
Well, it's good to know that Clinton is willing to do the bare minimum (and not a thing more) to lend transparancy to her campaign. Sure makes me want to have her in office.

WHOA. Give me a break. ANOTHER $5 million?
From CNN: "She also transferred an additional $10 million from her 2006 Senate re-election account, which, at the end of March, gave the former first lady the most available cash of any presidential candidate,"
I find her a very cunning lady.

At least Mitt Romney admits that he is a multi-millionaire. Billary trying to play the broke local/yocal is yet another disgusting tactic. There is nothing this tag-team won't do to grasp the power yet again. Tears on cue.... cut to the poor broke candidate saying that she's 'lending' the campaign her own money. Come on.
The 1990s are over, and there's no reason to issue a blank check to yet another four-eight years of a 2 family system. McCain or Obama will win. If Hill gets the Dem nod, she'll never win in November. - Especially with how broke she claims to be.

Yeah Clinton campaign, keep trying to hide over her not releasing her tax returns by bringing up that old and tired and nothing Rezko. First of all, everybody and anybody has been digging into this "Rezko" situation and so secondly that has nothing to do with Clinton not releasing her tax returns. Carl,
You speak about voting being the primary factor that separates a democracy from a dictatorship. What about the Clintons forming political dynasties like the Bushes? What about all those unelected Superdelegates backing Hillary simply because they have a place in the DNC? Hillary Clinton is a liar, and anybody who believes her is an idiot. Think about it mathematically: a senator earns $120,000 a year. She has been a senator for 8 years. That equals $960,000. Where is the rest of the $4.4 million she "donated from her own finances" to the campaign? I'd like to see these statistics before I trust her enough to run my country. But let's face it: HRC is a secretive, deceptive, spin-master who will sell her soul to the Devil himself to become President. Maybe she got it from her Chinese buddies in Hong Kong, or her Wal-Mart cronies from Bentonville. Maybe it was money she laundered after Whitewater. Heck, since we haven't seen the documentation, maybe she and Bill are running a Columbian cocaine ring in Harlem? Yeah, a little farfetched, but how do we know?? She won't give us the information.

Billay hasn't released her tax records for the same reason studios don't release a movie until it is completely edited.
You have to show it to some test audiences and see which one they like best. As soon as they have dummied up the best docs campaign money can buy, they will 'WOW!' us with a wonderful tale of charities and low income. It will be an epic event to witness.
