Clinton's big Massachusetts 'upset' victory: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

The Clinton campaign is pushing the line tonight that its projected win in Massachusetts is a major victory.

It is actually calling it an upset. This may be one of the best examples of spin we'll see tonight.

It is arguably not an upset. Sen. Hillary Clinton had a big polling lead in the state, depending on which poll you looked at. Yes, some polls showed the race close.

But a Feb.1-3 Survey USA poll had the race with Clinton at 56 percent and Obama at 39 percent. With more than a quarter of the vote in, the race looks about like that poll.

Nevertheless, these are the Clinton camp's Massachusetts talking points this evening:

UPSET OF THE NIGHT

One of the biggest surprises of the night is Massachusetts

Despite the fact that Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry were actively supporting and campaigning for Obama, Hillary Clinton won the state.

Despite the fact that the Governor of Massachusetts endorsed Obama, Hillary Clinton won the state.

Despite the fact that Obama visited Massachusetts just last night, Hillary Clinton won the state.

This is a strong victory and shows that Hillary Clinton has strength in places where Barack Obama was expected to win.

Er, Obama was expected to win Illinois, Georgia and Alabama, not Massachusetts and Clinton didn't perform strongly in those places.

The Clinton camp is clearly elated that the Kennedy magic didn't help Obama take a state that many observers didn't expect him to take. The Clintonites really appears to want to rub its performance in the face of the Kennedys, namely Sen. Ted Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, as well as the state's junior senator, John Kerry, all who provided Obama with major endorsements that rocked the Clinton campaign.

Obama won Illinois by a much bigger margin than Clinton won New York. Enough said.

(Clinton's spin doctors are pathetic.)

I think you are being unfair to Clinton. This is a big win for her and should not be minimized.

If she was polling ahead in the state, I wouldn't call it an upset. Pundits over-estimate the effect of endorsements - that's the real story of what happened in Massachusetts.

Clinton's experience, and well-financed campaign, and strong Hispanic and women, and anti-bush fanbase vote will propel her to the top.

I'm from Illinois and I didn't vote for Obama.
He's an idiot because he brushed aside the Hispanic vote.
I voted for Clinton.

Seems like plausible clintonesque spin - a last vestige of the "me" generation she represents - if Clinton gets the nomination, centrist independents will side with McCain before supporting another political dynasty. God knows the current one is a disaster!

Massachusetts voters fell for the "Change" campaign when they voted for Deval Patrick (who's charisma parallels that of Obama and who so far hasn't been able to make CHANGE)Deval's campaign strategist is now working for Obama. It takes political savvy to make change which requires experience - I still hope for the dream ticket though.

Clinton victory in the very heart of what once was Kennedy-land shows just how little those Kennedy endorsements are worth.

"I think you are being unfair to Clinton. This is a big win for her and should not be minimized."

The press being unfair to Hillary? That's a shock.

I really hope the media keeps the blind, biased Hillary hating shenanigans up; the sympathy/backlash vote is helping a lot.

Massachusetts just pimped slapped Ted Kennedy and the media that lapped this endorsement up. Spin or no spin...HAHAHAHA!

Hillary won big in Mass. and this hopefully will make all of the Kennedy clan to stop playing favorites. At the end substance will prevail. What about charisma? Well that's got us into trouble for the last seven years. Go Hillary!

Heh - Clinton outspent Obama in Massachusetts 2 to 1 and saw her lead cut in half from what it was just a few weeks ago.

Maybe her campaign meant to say the she is upset? That would make more sense.

How is it surprising to anyone at this point that the Clintons' have an effective spin team? I'll make you a prediction though: if Clinton wins, not only won't she hold onto the Independents and Republicans Obama has brought in, she'll turn off a whole generation of young Democratic voters who are turning if for their first experience voting this year.

Hillary rocks! The people of Massachusetts have spoken! They don't need "has-beens" and movie stars telling them how to vote...they have minds of their own.

Nobody is minimizing Clinton win in Massachussets. It is the spin her campaign is putting on which is clearly a distortion. But then, what is new with the Clintons?

Of the myriad of things that have been said (and re-said) during the race to the White House, there are a few that are grating on my eardrums and I hope never to hear again! It's a shortish list, but I'm sure that for many of these, you might feel the same.
Please stop talking about Hillary Clinton's "experience." - She's had exactly the same presidential experience as Obama: Zero. And their elected experience consists of being a US Senator and that's it. Mrs. Clinton is 14 years older, but does that make her a better candidate? No. Is the fact that Bill Clinton being her hubby enough to support her? No. He was Bill. She is not. And times are way different than they were 16 years ago. Damn, it's been that long?...

Drop the whole "Reagan Revolution" nonsense - Ronald Reagan was a curse. His revolution was disasterous for the long-term health of our system of government, introducing the nation to the term "structural deficit." Did you know that the US Government, during the Reagan years, created a larger deficit than had been accrued throughout the preceding 200 years? And that for the most part of the 8 years he was president, the poor actually did worse than they had during the recession-plagued Carter administration? Hell, his vice president George H.W. Bush didn't even like the man!

Please stop talking about Obama supporters being cultist or groupies - I guess three governors, a handful of sitting U.S. senators, Toni Morrison, Garrison Keilor, Maria Shirver, and a ton of other supporters are groupies too, huh? The man has a legitimate following of thinking individuals who find his campaign to be worthwhile. And for goodness sake, he draws crowds of 20,000 or more whereever he goes, and they represent a nice cross-section of the electorate. Plus, one doesn't raise $32 million in three months being some fly-by-night hack.

Please quit with the "glass ceiling" thing for women in politics - While Hill may not be my choice for the White House, she is proving that if you're smart, and tough, and connected, you can be a woman and be president of this nation. And one doesn't have to be "bitchy" to do it. I got into a discussion about this with a friend of mine, and her point was that Hillary was being punished and picked on because she's a woman. No, she's being picked on because she's a Clinton. Bottom line is, despite all that Clinton baggage and despite her persistent 36% negativity rating, she can and just might be the next President of the United States of America.

Mitt Romney is not a Conservative - Please. Dude is from Massachusetts for goodness sake. He was pro-abortion and pro-government-sponsored healthcare. He sounds pretty liberal, on its face, to me. He's a chameleon. Today he's conservative, tomorrow he'll be a liberal again. He might be a Mormon, but that's about all we know about him to be unchanging and true.

Rudy Guiliani is America's Mayor and a hero - No, he was just New York City's mayor, and the jury is still out on whether he was a good mayor then. Let's be real, he looked mayoral when he donned the "FDNYPD" hat at Ground Zero, but to hear firefighters tell it, it was his fault they had shoddy communications gear, costing lives. Plus, he has horrible people-skills. He hired Bernie Kerik to be his Police commissioner in NYC, after firing his predecessor because he was stealing Rudy's flash. Couple of issues though: Kerik was mobbed up, and wasn't even qualified under New York City rules to hold a rank above captain. The accusation, among others, was that Kerik's chief qualification appeared to be that he had served as Giuliani¢s driver and bodyguard.

John McCain is a "maverick" - This guy is all establishment. True, he is a real-life American Hero but he's no choirboy. He followed Barry Goldwater into the U.S. Senate from Arizona, and he's as tied-in as they come. And, he was wrapped up in the largest bank fraud in the history of the country, the Savings and Loan scandal of the 1980s. McCain survived the political scandal by, in part, becoming friendly with the political press, and remains so, today. Wait, maybe he is a Reaganite.

Tom Brady is the greatest QB Ever - No, that's still Johnny Unitas. And it seems the New York Giants had a trick bag for Mr. Model himself in last night's big game. Brady can now go home to cry in the arms of whatever supermodel he's dating today. He's snide, arrogant and off the football field, quite an ass apparently. Good riddance. Wait, that wasn't political. But nonetheless, I'm tired of hearing it.

Ted Kennedy and John Kelly this is the end for you both in Massachusets. I also hope the people of Massachusets will vote both of them of the office.

Go Hillary.

I am woman, hear me roar, and I'm ten times as important as Ted Kennedy and Devil Patrick!

MA keeps Kennedy because of his clout. But a rich old liberal who drinks too much and a Park Avenue soccer mom really don't have anything of importance to say to the average American.

How amazing that 95% of all African-Americans in Illinois just so happen to agree with Obama. No racism there.

This is a surprise to anyone who never met someone from Southie (South Boston), where racism trumps party loyalty or loyalty to the Kennedys.

Hillary won because she's ready to lead. Period!

Good Job TEAM Hillary!! I wish Indiana could have voted last night....you would be even more ahead.
Best Wishes....we will be there for you in May...bummer it is that late

You find it hard to believe that a black man may prefer to vote for another black man? And that to you is racism? Wow!
So tell me...are you white? and did you vote for a white candidate? It seems funny that the evangelists vote for the candidate that throws God into the mix, or a woman candidate asking women to support her, yet a black man shouldn't have black support? Thats wacked!

In response to Catherine, "How amazing that 95% of all African-Americans in Illinois just so happen to agree with Obama. No racism there."

The racism is when the media and some white fail to acknowledge the republican party has had the white male and white female vote since the civil rights law was passed in 1964. MLK predicted this.

It's ok for whites to vote for whites, blacks to vote for whites, but if blacks vote for blacks, it's racism. I got it.

"racism trumps party loyalty or loyalty to the Kennedys"

So, the people in states Obama lost are racists. Here we go....

Catherine, are you saying that when a white candidate get 95% of white votes it's racism too?

No one who was looking at the polls expected an Obama victory in Mass. The aggregate polls showed Clinton about 10 points ahead and individual polls showed her 15+ points ahead. However, compared to the 30 point lead she enjoyed a week or so ago, it was more of a victory to close that lead by half than it was to hold a state you were always predicted to hold.

DOnt let the Obama loving press fool you. Obama thought he had a great chance in both Mass and CA. He lost both by big margins. Hillary won all of the big states besides IL. All that HIllary has to do is win Ohio and Texas and the nom is hers. Obama 100% thought they were going to win Mass and CA. The swamp was even reporting polls where Obama was up 13pts in CA and drawing even with her in Mass. I am not a huge Hillary fan but the swamp writers/readers need to give credit where it is due. So Obama followers would let us believe that there strategy was to lose the overall delegate count? That is spin by the Obama camp. I would like to know why more people are not asking why Obama faired so poorly in the big states.

How was Obama 'expected to win' in Mass when the polls all favored Clinton there leading all the way up to Super Tuesday, and the same for New Jersey and New York, Clinton lead all these states in the polls, so why is everyone trying to spin this Kennedy endorsement stuff? Why is it just because Obama gets an endorsement from heavyweights he's expected to carry the state even when Clinton is leading in that state? Give me a break! If that's the case, then why didn't Clinton win all the other states, since she also got endorsements in those states? Get off it. Kennedy and everyone else who endorses Obama is just that, an endorsement. They never say they will carry the state because of an endorsement, the media says it and wants to turn the American people into believing that, while the Clinton campaign spins it.
