Turns out that the $5 million Sen. Hillary Clinton loaned her campaign last month might have been a pretty savvy move.
Not only did the money help Clinton buy television ads in the key Super Tuesday states in which she prevailed, but according to her campaign, it primed the money pump.
"For so long, Senator Clinton was so well-resourced. . . when people found out the money was needed, they responded," spokesman Howard Wolfson said Friday.
The campaign announced that, as of Friday, Clinton had raised $8 million online since Super Tuesday and $10 million online as of Feb. 1. He said the campaign had identified 75,000 new donors since Tuesday. (Sen. Barack Obama's campaign said yesterday he had raised $7.6 million since Tuesday.)
The money will be used to buy TV ads in regions such as the Washington, DC metro area, in advance of next week's primaries in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. And next week, ads go on the air in the critical states of Ohio and Texas.
The result has been so dramatic, Wolfson said, that he expects the two campaigns to have roughly equal resources going forward. "When all is said and done, Senator Obama may have some advantage, but the amount of money the campaigns spend on media will be about the same," Wolfson said.
The ad-buys in Ohio and Texas are crucial for Clinton. Obama may win most, if not all, of the Democratic caucases and primaries in February, making the March 4 primaries in those delegate-rich states a potential crucible for the New York senator.

Gee Hillary, it"s really great that you have such a personal fortune.
Do you keep it in Dubai Savings and Loan, The Shanghai People's Bank or is this part of the rainy day stash you keep in the HSU box under your bed?

Why would any rational person just accept Howard Wolfson and the Clinton machine at their word, without checking to see if what they say about fundraising is true?
But reporter Jim Oliphant accepts what Wolfson says as the truth--which is truly faith-based journalism.

So she raised $100M last year and ran out of money in January going against a 1 term Senator. And she's going to help our economy as President?
Posted by: Marko | February 8, 2008 4:14 PM
So is she going to take half of the $10 M she raised this month and pay herself back?

Hillary's "loan" to herself was a very clever publicity stunt to cadge more donations (quite successful, too, apparently). Yesterday Illinois Ex-Gov. Jim Edgar succinctly stated what I've been saying for almost a year: the Republicans MUCH prefer Clinton to Obama as their opponent in the general election. Hillary is WAY too polarizing of a figure, and will give the otherwise (now with Romney gone) apathetic "true" conservative" voters a reason to go to the polls in the fall - i.e., do anything to defeat the Clintons. There is plenty of mud to throw at the Clintons - lots of "Swift Boat" ammo.
Obama, on the other hand, scares the heck out of Roverian Republicans because there's just not enough dirt to throw at him in a general election.

I don't think this is a stunt. Hillary raised a lot of cash, but a good portion of it came with the restriction that it could only be used in the general election, not against other Dems in the primary.

Bottom Line:
Like all of you. I know that health care is the most critical, and important issue facing the American people. Now, and in the coming elections. And like the vast majority of the American people, I want HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law NOW! "Single payer, Tax Supported, Not For Profit, True Universal Health Care" free for all as a right. Like every other developed country in the world has. See: http://www.house.gov/conyers/news_hr676.htm
“HR 676:
For church goers: less money to insur. companies and more to the church- lots more.
Srs on Medicare: save way over $100/wk. Because no more medigap, long term care & dental insur. needed. No more drug bills.”
But if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our current politicians to get HR 676 passed into law before the elections. We will have to identify, and replace all the politicians standing in the way of passage of HR 676. And, I think the best first place to start is with the politicians that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bills for the kids. Passed by congress four times.
But what about the President. It was Bush after all that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bill passed by congress to assure more health coverage for Americas kids. So which of the presidential hopefuls do I think will be most supportive of implementing the demand of the majority of the American people to have HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law immediately!
We have some very fine presidential candidates who would make good presidents. But none of the top Presidential candidates directly support HR 676, the only true Universal Health Care plan. So I am supporting Hillary Clinton. She is the only top candidate that has ever actually fought for universal health care before.
I have enormous admiration, and respect for Hillary Clinton. She fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds back in 1993. To prevent this disastrous health care crisis that is now devastating the American people, and America. She fought so hard for the American people that she risk almost completely destroying her husbands presidency. I haven't forgotten her heroic effort. If any Presidential hopeful for universal health care deserves my support, it's her.
Also, if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our government to give us HR 676 which we all so desperately need NOW! Then we will need the most skilled politician we can get on our side to broker the best health care plan for the American people that we can get. Though it will be less than we need, and less than we deserve. The politician I think to best do this is Hillary Clinton. The Clinton's are probably the most skilled politicians in American history.
The insurance industry, and medical industry that has been ripping you off, and killing you has given Hillary Clinton so much money because they fear her. They have also given Barack Obama so much money because they fear Hillary Clinton. They think they can manipulate Barack Obama against the best interest of the American people better than they can manipulate Hillary Clinton. There is no race issue with Hillary Clinton. The Clinton's are the poster family for how African Americans want white people to be towards African Americans.
As always, African Americans are suffering, and dieing in this health care crisis at a much higher rate than any other group in America. The last time there was any significant drop in the African American death rate was when Bill Clinton was president.
My fellow Americans, you are dieing needlessly at an astounding rate. In higher numbers than any other people in the developed world. Rich, and poor a like. Insured, and uninsured. Young, and old. Men, women, children, and babies. And we the American people must stop it. And fix it NOW! Keep Fighting!!! Never! give up hope. There are millions of lives at stake. Bless you all... You are doing great!

And still the media will not ask the source of Hillary's $5 million. She makes $169,000 a year and received an $8 million payment on her book, minus millions in income tax. Does that leave her with anything? Does she just carry around that much or did she cash in an investment? If so, which one? I have never seen such a non-interested media?

The media IS asleep at the wheel. Clinton continues to block the release of her files from her 8 years worth of "experience" as First Lady until after she is nominated. By that time, it will be too late to elect another Democrat, but the Republicans will have a field day with those files. The media (and votes) need to press the issue! The Clintons, espcially Hillary, are known for lack of transparency. She's like the Dick Cheney of the Democratic Party!

"They say you couldn't stop me from spending all the money I've saved over the last five years if I wanted to, even though it would clearly violate the spirit of campaign-finance reform." -Bill Clinton
Nothing says "I'm not like you" to voters like a seven figure check made out to yourself. Aaah, the madness of the Clintons. Sheer madness.

If Hillary can give 5 million of her own money to her campaign, I decided I could give $100 of my own money for her campaign. Hillary raised over $4 million in 24 hours this past Thursday! Over 35,000 contributed online ot her campaign. As of Friday afternoon, another 40,000 had contributed. No mention of any of this on CNN, who all seem to be totally affected with Obamamania for some strange reason.

:) ... It is interesting for Obama's people who are supposed to be positive, some of you guys are so cynical.
Indeed, Clinton"s fortune is around 10-15 millions raised primarily by selling books and lectures. So, she was so committed to this cause that she was ready to forego 1/3-1/4 of her total belongings. It is indeed about 1/1000 of what some supporters of Obama possess (e.g. Oprah). For your information, Obama's house is worth a few million $.
Hillary 08 - you rock girl :)

This is nothing compared to ROMNEY!
btw - for most of their lives HRC has earned more money than her husband. She's not a curtain-picking-out do nothing. She was a serious lawyer and investor.

Obama and his wife reported earnings of 1 million dollars a year. That does not include advances or royalties on his books that have been re-released. He has not even completed 1 term. Clinton is an EX former first lady. All Ex former first ladies command speaking fees when they speak. Obama does the same. I don't think 1 million dollars a year is exactly putting him in the poor house. There is so much anti-clinton bias in the media and the facts.
You know, when you can buy a piece of land and house from an indicted slum lord for $300K LESS then market value that 1 million you make a year probably gets you a lot further in terms of buying power. It's really all about having the right "judgement."

"ABC News' Kate Snow reports that senior staff members on the campaign are not going without pay – they never stopped receiving checks."

Guess they were just PLANNING to go without pay.

Clinton made a LOAN to her campaign. I find it funny that so many other people decided to donate to pay back her LOAN. Shouldn't all fundraising figures have this money deducted? Saying she raised 8 million when in fact the first 5 went into her bank...

Was all of the money raised this week eligible for the primary, or was some of it only to be used in the main campaign? (Campaign laws allow contributions up to $2,300 for the primary and another $2,300 for the general campaign-- Hillary has "maxed out" a lot of her supporters. Is the new money all eligible now?)
If she had to loan $5 million and suspend salaries just to get by, and she collected $6 million, and she paid the loan back, doesn't that leave her with only $1 million? Isn't this still a story?
Posted by: Tony Iovino | February 9, 2008 12:06 PM
Yeah right, get the stories straight, Clinton supposed raised this money since February 1 not since Super Tuesday. All of a sudden, the second story, it became Super Tuesday because as usual, they try to compete with Obama, and as Hillary is now doing with her "Yes We Can" Obama slogan like everything else she's stolen from him.

If Hillary can't handle her 100 milliom campaign war chest she has no business handling our country.
