by Jason George
Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, has announced that he is endorsing former Gov. Mike Huckabee's White House bid.
"My decision comes in the wake of my statement on Super Tuesday that I could not vote for Sen. John McCain, even if he goes on to win the Republican nomination," Dobson wrote.
"That left two pro-family candidates whom I could support, but I was reluctant to choose between them. However, the decision by Gov. Mitt Romney to put his campaign "on hold" changes the political landscape. The remaining candidate for whom I could vote is Gov. Huckabee. His unwavering positions on the social issues, notably the institution of marriage, the importance of faith and the sanctity of human life, resonate deeply with me and with many others."
That's far from the strongest endorsement in electoral history – in some ways it's seems more an anti-McCain disassociation – but Dobson's nod is surely welcome news for Huckabee, who previously has expressed frustration that major religious leaders had not coalesced around his campaign.
Although Dobson's endorsement says he's speaking as a private citizen – ostensibly to not violate his organization's tax-exempt status – his words will surely be heard by many of the millions of evangelicals who turn to Focus on the Family's Web site and radio programs.

Just a week ago this guy was sitting the election out! The weird political actions that Dobson makes are a black to religious voters.

As if this would be a surprise. What the big surprise is if McCain chooses Huck to be a running mate. McCain would have gone from calling the religious intolerant, to the complete sucking up to them just to get into the office.

Posted by: Gary | February 8, 2008 1:08 PM
Here is the truth: Huckabee is as close to George Washington as you can get. The "real" Washington, not the man they lied about in revised American history in the 20th century, was a devout Christian. And stop talking about "intolerant" Christians. If the bible is intolerant of certain behavior, so are Christians. Do your history: go to the National Archives. This nation was established by Christians; like it or not.

I applaud Dr. Dobson for taking a stand and putting himself in the line of fire. In this democratic society, we have a right to our opinion and our voice. As citizens, we all pay taxes, regardless of our employment status. We have not heard the last of Mike Huckabee, and the media should wake up and smell the coffee.

Speaking as one of the much touted evangelical Christians, I think there are many in that category that are tired of current administration policies and happy to find a moderate, maybe even an Obama or Clinton. Things need to change in our country. Despite what you read in the news and what certain evangelical leaders say a large portion of evangelicals will be choosing their own candidate outside of the "party" lines.

R. G.:
Check your OWN history - this country was founded by DEISTS, not Christians. There was only ONE minister among the writers of the Declaration of Independence.
George Washington had no impact on the Declaration, the Constitution, or any of the founding documents.
Maybe you should read the First Amendment - the part about the seperation of church and state. You know - the Constitution. The document that most right wingers believe starts at the 2nd amendment.

1. You have to be against capital punishment, but support abortion on demand.

This is from Gov. Mike Huckabee's web site
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
1. With ten-and-a-half years of experience running state government, Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas has more relevant executive experience than any candidate in the race – either Republican or Democrat.
2. Recognized and tapped by his peers for leadership, the National Governor’s Association selected Governor Huckabee as it’s Chairman,
3. TIME Magazine honored him as one of the five best Governors in America.
4. Governor Huckabee is a fiscal conservative who cut taxes almost 100 times in the state of Arkansas, including the state’s first broad-based tax cuts, and turned a $200 million deficit into an $850 million surplus.
ISSUES
1. TAXES/ECONOMY –Governor Huckabee supports The FairTax because it will restore the “Made in America” label, making American goods 12-25% more competitive, boosting economic growth, increasing our exports, and securing American jobs. It also prevents criminals or illegal aliens from avoiding taxes, and makes the taxes we all pay 100% transparent.
2. GOVERNMENT SPENDING – Governor Huckabee is committed to reducing government spending. One way he’ll do this is by reducing the cost of welfare. Governor Huckabee will work with states to reduce welfare roles through programs like the one he implemented in Arkansas, which reduced welfare roles by 50%.
3. HEALTH CARE –Governor Huckabee will implement a consumer-based healthcare system that emphasizes preventative medicine and wellness. Because 70% of our $2 trillion dollar healthcare costs is spent treating chronic, preventable diseases, this approach will make healthcare more affordable for everybody while keeping us healthier.
4. FAMILY VALUES –Governor Huckabee supports a federal constitutional amendment to protect the right to life. He Successfully fought for Arknasas’ marriage amendment and strongly supports a similar, federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
5. IMMIGRATION –Governor Huckabee will secure the border (with physical barriers, electronic surveillance, and more border-patrol personnel and detention facilities). He will also end sanctuary cities and increase penalties on, and enforcement against, employers who hire illegal immigrants. Governor Huckabee will make sure the border patrol has adequate funding to end our “catch and release” system so that everyone caught trying to enter illegally, overstaying their visa, or committing a crime will be held until they’re tried, convicted, and deported.
6. WAR ON TERROR AND IRAQ – Governor Huckabee knows it takes a large, well-equipped military to ensure our national defense and to deter conventional military confrontations. He also knows we need large, well-equipped intelligence and Special Forces operations for our national offense – so we can effectively find and eliminate terrorists threats at home or abroad. Governor Huckabee will be a Commander in Chief who knows that IF WE HAVE TO FIGHT A WAR, our President has to fight it the way our GENERALS tell him it can be won, not the way we wants it to be won.
7. ENERGY INDEPENDENCE –Governor Huckabee will implement a program to end the import of foreign oil in the next ten years by increasing domestic oil production in the short term, and then replacing oil-based energy infrastructure with alternative and renewable energies.
8. CLEMENCIES – Arkansas Governors grant clemency, but the parole board grants parole. Wayne DuMond’s parole was granted by the board and NOT Governor Huckabee.
9. TAXES –When Governor Huckabee left office, the tax rates remained exactly the same as when he first came into office. Governor Huckabee returned almost $400 million to Arkansas taxpayers, and he also DOUBLED the standard deduction for individuals and married couples, DOUBLED the childcare tax credit, and eliminated the marriage penalty. He also repealed capital gains taxes for home sales, lowered the capital gains rate by 25%, expanded the homestead exemption, and set up tax-free savings accounts for medical care and college tuition.
10. SECOND AMENDMENT-
• Lifetime member of the NRA, member for over 15 years
• First Governor to have concealed-carry permit
• Removed restrictions on carry permit holders
• Protected gun manufacturers from frivolous lawsuits
• Opposes reauthorization of the Assault Weapon Ban
• Opposes expansion of the unconstitutional “Brady Bill”
• Opposes waiting period for purchase of firearms
• Opposes background checks on private firearms transactions at gun shows
• Will nominate judges who interpret the Constitution a the Founders intended, rather than as a “living document reflecting current political trends or opinions”
• An avid hunter and conservationist, and a member of the Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation and BASS.

It may be impossible for Huckabee to win the nomination (get the 1191 delegate majority), but its certainly not impossible for him to stop McCain from getting that majority. As far as I understand it, if neither have the majority it goes to a vote from scratch at the convention until one of them does have the majority. In that scenario with the delegates having a "second chance" to vote I think Huckabee's chances are very good.

I find it interesting that Mr. Dobson is now going to endorse Mr. Huchabee. Mitt Romney was the only conseritive christian with a chance at the presidency and Mr. Dobson and the evangelicals couldn't endorse him because he was of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. They promote christian and family values more than Mr. Dobson and all the evangelicals combined. Now they can deal with John Mc Cain.

Mike Huckabee has no chance of winning th nomination - anyone who counts delegates sees that. I respect Dr. Dobson, but I respectfully disagree that Mike Huckabee is more conservative than John Mccain. Check their records on Anti-abortion views - they both are Right -to-Life advocates. John Mccain also voted for conservative Supreme Court judges Sam Alito and John Roberts that president Bush appointed. If the choice becomes either Jihn Mccain or Hilary Clinton / Barac Obama and you don't vote, you're giving a big victory to Hilary or Barac and killing any chance to get Right-to-Life Supreme Court judges.

If Dobson wants a "social" conservative for President, then he should be supporting Ron Paul - NOT Huck the Schmuck!
Judicial Watch, Inc., the non-profit organization that uncovers corruption in government, posted in December its ten most corrupt politicians for 2007. Besides the permanent resident of that list - Hillary - Barak Obama, Rudy Guiliani, and Mike Huckabee were also on that list.
Huckabee was on Judicial Watch's list because, when Huckabee left office, he had the hard-drives of 83 computers destroyed as well as the hard-drives of three network computers. In addition, there were 14 investigations into his ethics. Over $70,000 of furniture was donated to the Governor's mansion in Arkansas and Huckabee said it belonged to him!
What's worse is that Huckabee, who claims to have a degree in theology - but doesn't - plays guitar in a band call "Capitol Offense." His band plays such suggestive songs as "Honky Tonk Women" and "Good Golly Miss Molly." Shouldn't a man of the cloth be trying to redeem fallen women, drug addicts, and perverts instead of extolling them in song?
In a speech before the Republican Governors Association, Huck did a take-off on a Bob Newhart skit and pretended to receive a cellphone call from God! Huck played God as the straightman! IMHO, Huck was the fool. (A fool in his heart says there is no God.)

Conservatives are beginning to amaze me in their inability to see what's really at stake here. This election is about more than McCain and his inability to follow conservative principals.
How is handing the whole country over to liberals a suitable alternative to McCain?
There is a serious difference between McCain and a purebread liberal who is bent on destroying ALL conservative values as well as our country with them.
Anti McCain commentators such as Rush Limbaugh have ventured the idea that perhaps we should sit this election out and let the Dems have a term in office, claiming it might pave the way for a future shot at a candidate he and others will like in four years.
Imagine the damage our country will endure if Democrats control all three branches of government for 4 to 8 years.
This would give liberals what they will treat as a clear sign from America that is it ready to move sharply to the left. Not slightly to the left.
Cherry picking our candidate is exactly what got us INTO this mess, and if conservatives aren’t careful, they will throw the entire country into a liberal free for all...
There is no such thing as a quick recovery from 4 years of liberalism unchecked. We may be facing what will take years and years of damage to undo. What’s more, there’s no guarantee that it WILL be undone. Have conservatives completely forgotten Roe v. Wade and other extremely important issues? We need an allie on every core issue we can get.
Questioning McCain was right and highly useful for a time and a season. Many of us wish we had acted sooner to support Romney or Huck....
But staying home on election day allows liberals a pass to capture all THREE branches of Government. Do you want your kids growing up in that kind of environment?
I'm not asking anyone to sacrifice their own belief or convictions, but we have a serious serious problem here, that we can't afford to fall asleep on.
Give it some thought, friends.

Mike Huckabee has always been the only candidate in this race for many of us. I have always said that not only is he an authentic conservative, he is an authentic human being.
We like Mike because he is out there fighting for us, the average everyday American.
Governor Mike Huckabee was kicked in the knees by Romney, but Mike got up and decided to keep fighting. He did not accept failure and he will fight to the end. His true American spirit has inspired us to love our Country again.
We are all going to go out and vote for Huckabee, because we are voting for ourselves, our children, and our future.
This race will be one sided from now on and Mike Huckabee will be the 44th President of the United States!

All who advocate taxing religion while mindlessly spouting Secular Humanist, view points should probably duck. ("the new religion" see early 1900’s history of public schools, John Dewey) It’s the only religion tax payers pay to have taught, in our public schools. Oh, except for any other religion but, Christianity. Also take a real look at history, and the actual documents that the public schools have perverted to expunge any reference to religion, and you will see truth, this country was founded by Christians.
Dr. Dobson has every right to voice his personal preferences and views. Why should public funded teachers always get the bully pulpit without any protest?

"That left two pro-family candidates whom I could support, but I was reluctant to choose between them."
According to Dobson, anyone who doesn't 100% agree with "anti-Christ" beliefs are all homosexuals or don't care about their families. What an idiot.
Hey, mororn, Democrats/Liberals have families, too. And they, more times than not, turn out to be much more well-rounded, and productive members of society than the narrow minded, bigots you produce.

I am amazed at the lack of maturity in some of the comments....your language and name-calling is evidence enough to me that you lack the maturity and intelligence to make a convincing argument about any candidate.

To Dr. Dobson and all Values voters: We should have all lent our voices, time, financial support and VOTES to Mike Huckabee MUCH sooner. As we all should have sensed and probably DID sense when we first began hearing Mike Huckabee he is a GREAT candidate and a great representative of our our values and our positions. I honestly believe that we will NEVER see a better OR more VIABLE candidate to stand for our vital causes in our entire lifetimes. He is ROCK SOLID on all of our issues and ALSO has the humor, wit, likability and ELOQUENCE to present our case on these issues in a way that does not get him rejected out of hand. With the race as narrowed as it is now, let's follow Dr. Dobson's lead and WHOLEHEARTEDLY throw our support behind this courageous and remarkable standard bearer for our vitally important causes. Take a stand for Mike Huckabee!

Dobson and Huckabee are the Anti-Christ look at the weather that happened in the states Huckabee won... With McCain not being a eligible because of lack of citizenship does Romney get back in?

to syj, your way over the top attack on Dr. Dobson is appropriately decorated with your inability to spell "moron" correctly.
and to BOBinATL, I was beginning to think you were intelligent, balanced and humorous with your responses to the anonymous posting until you got to numbers 14, 18 and 21 - in 18 you were just plain childish and in 21 you were not only childish but you show your true leftist wacko colors/tendencies - only a truly mindless HilLIARy loyal foot soldier/lap dog would ever say anything like that - in the case of number 14, you simply underscore the fact there is indeed much confusion among both democrats (like yourself) and republicans (like limbaugh) about what a true conservative is - any old school conservative, libertarian or open-minded independent would know that no true conservative could ever put Reagan ahead of Jefferson (though many republicans that are pseudoconservatives often do) - Reagan (for all the good he did) was unable to balance the budget (he tried but not all that hard and you could blame the democratic congress or the lack of a line-item veto or the cost of the cold war but that would be a cop out because the economic recovery under Reagan did boost federal revenues by hundreds of billions of dollars and Reagan was still unable to reduce the deficits) - so no true conservative would ever put reagan ahead of jefferson - please remember that jefferson was the brilliant man (who was, for the record, Christian then deist then Christian again) who said "the government which governs the least, governs the best" - now that is a true conservative not your typical republican bogus conservative who says he wants to shrink government and then doubles spending (and the Bushes were as bad, or more often worse, than Reagan on that point)
from little t - tom the true independent
p.s. regarding #3, the only reason the DNC leaders including Clinton were not tried for treason (for selling all of that influence to the Chinese) is because some of the republican big wigs were also taking Chinese money - not as much as the DNC but still way way too much

I applaud Dr. Dobson for his refusal to vote if John McCain is the nominee, and hope all who listen to him sit this one out too. It will surely improve our chances of taking our government back from the dishonest, immoral corporatocratists that have done so much damage over the past seven years. Keep it up, Dobson, we can use your help.

Dobson joins the other crybabies who are angry that John McCain won't kiss his ring. By being blatently political (and not just speaking to values), he gives Christians a bad name. I'm an Evangelical Bible Believing Christian and Independent Conservative, & I strongly support John McCain who is a true conservative on anti-abortion, national security, and fiscal matters. This country needs someone who will fight pork and corruption, and John McCain's the man for it. Maybe that is the real reason so many so-called conservatives are angry with him.

Thank you Dr. Dobson, you have endorsed a wonderful candidate. May the conservative party follow in your footsteps.

Dr. Dobson: Do you really mean we are not to vote AGAINST the liberals who will take our country the opposite direction than the way we want to go. How can God bless our nation if they do that? How can we NOT vote against them, even in it's McCain... isn't he the lesser of the evils???
Posted by: deb | February 10, 2008 11:26 PM
Ok Dr Dobson and fellow evangelical conservatives, now let's put our money where our mouth is and get the financial support to the Huckabee campaign!

I have to say a person of integrity, lives out their values. What motivates a person....money, power, lust, greed....is he/she an honest person who practices what he/she speaks? Look at Hillary and Bill, Obama, McCain and Huckabee carefully. Huckabee's choices, his married life, his children, his 10+ years of experience governing Arkansas..... speak volumes about this person's character. Ask the men and women of Arkansas. Those living in his region of the country were so happy with this man's integrity that he won the majority vote in those states. We should protect the values we live for.....loving and caring for our neighbor, loving God, cherishing and respecting marriage and the family. Let's vote for a man of integrity, one who is a role model for our country's children.

BOBINATL:
I guess you haven't read the constitution. The separation of church and state isn't in the constitution and neither is healthcare, welfare, abortion or privacy. However, it is in the constitution that congress' power is limited to those powers expressly granted in the constitution. Your problem is you're a liberal. Liberals think that the Government and not the people can fix problems, that Government and not the people know how better to spend money, that the Government and not the people can create wealth and jobs, that the government and not the people can be trusted with their own defense through gun ownership, that the government must take care of those who do not wish to work, that the government should control how our children are educated, by whom they are educated and what they should be learn,
Look at YOUR city Bob, Atlanta. Look at how well your schools perform, how well the welfare programs serve the poor, how high the crime rates in Atlanta are and tell me why the Government- which has completely failed the poor, the children of the poor and the rest of its subjects- is still trying to solve the same problems with the same answers- government control and tax money.

Someone responded to me and said that our Founders were deists? Whoever is reading this, here is the proof of our Christian foundations. Please go to www.wallbuilders.com. These people can prove, with historical documentation, that our nation is a Christian nation. The revisions of our American history, which began at the end of the 1800's, were written by self-proclaimed atheists who resented the fact of God in our documents and Founders' writings. All of us, since the beginning of the 20th century, have been taught REVISED, GODLESS AMERICAN HISTORY. BEFORE YOU TRY AND TELL ME OFF, GO DO YOUR RESEARCH. MOST OF THE GODLESS HISTORY THAT HAS BEEN TAUGHT TO US CANNOT DOCUMENT ACTUAL REFERENCES TO PROVE THEIR CLAIMS.
If you are sincere, go to www.wallbuilders.com. It will put to rest everyone's confusion.

Dear Dr. Dobson,
My husband and I have been strong supporters of you and "Focus on The Family". I can understand your dislike for John McCain. He certainly is not our first choice either, but we are so disappointed to hear you say that you are "not going to vote" if he is the Republican candidate. Knowing how many people are influenced by you, if they follow your example and don't vote, that can only help ensure a Democrat victory in November. Knowing what Hillary and Obama stand for,do you really think either one of them would be better for our country and the "families" of our country? At least, McCain may choose a running mate who can be of influence and may eventually take his place. That doesn't have a chance of happening if the Democrats get back into office.
Please reconsider your stance on "not voting", and use your influence to encourage people to vote for the Republican nominee, whoever he is. Once he is in office, we can do what the Bible says: "to pray for our elected officials". If you maintain your stance on "not voting", we can no longer support "Focus on The Family". Many of our Christian friends feel the same way because what you are doing (saying you will not vote)and influencing many others to "not vote" is only a contradiction to helping the "family".
Sincerely, Nancy Reed
