For those social conservatives still suspicious of Sen. John McCain, take heart. Gary Bauer, one of the leading advocates of family values, has given McCain his blessing.
"John McCain has dedicated his life to defending human rights around the world, including the rights of the unborn," said Bauer, who ran for president himself in 2000 and now runs the group Family Values. "I admire his consistent 24-year pro-life record and demonstrated commitment to the values that keep our families and communities strong. John McCain alone has the experience, character and credibility to lead as commander in chief on day one and defeat the transcendent threat of our time -- radical Islamic extremism. I am proud to support John McCain for president."
McCain has consulted with Bauer regularly as heâs run for president, so his endorsement is not a huge surprise. But with brickbats flying at McCain from Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Tom DeLay, the senator needs every social conservative whoâs willing to come on board.
"I have long admired Gary's commitment and passion for our shared pro-life and pro-family values,â McCain said in a statement. âGary has always been a forceful, unapologetic advocate for the sanctity of life and traditional marriage, judicial restraint and a strong American foreign policy based on our values. I am honored to have Gary Bauer's support, and his advice and counsel will be critical as we continue to bring our Party together for victory in November."

Those pesky "agents of intolerance" Always return. Watch for McCains immediate refusal of his blessing. A maverick such as McCain would never suck up to the rightious right just for votes. Bully!!! McCain!!!!

Regardless of his faults, McCain is almost without doubt the GOP presidential nominee.
I think if he very soon announced Mitt Romney as his running mate that conservatives would rally around the McCain/Romney ticket and immediately gear up for the fight to defeat the Democratic nominee in November.

Gary Bauer is like a germ that keeps mutating.

Yeah, a "maverick" like McCain would never pander to the religious right by hiring someone like Gary Bauer.
Oh wait--never mind.

I used to like McCain until he started stumping for Bush in '04, and then started pandering to the evangelicals.
They're a cancer that's wrecking the Republican party.
Family values my eye.

Why would anyone vote for 4 more years of:
1. A recession
2. Housing chaos
3. Selling of the US to China
4. Every child left behind
5. special treatment for the rich, and well connected
6. Trillion dollar deficit
7. Illegal wire tapping
8. Illegal Firing of Athornies that want to do their jobs properly
9. Unnecessary war
10. Turning a blind eye to illegal immigrants
11. Illegal tortures
13. Reducing a world superpower to the impression of a bully without proper military backup.

Isn't McCain the guy who once said he was glad abortion is safe and legal in case his daughter needed it?

A "maverick" like McCain has to suck up to the religious conservative element in the primaries because thatâs where the votes are. As for a McCain/Romney ticket, donât hold your breath, especially after all the animosity generated between the two of them on the campaign trail. Besides, a partyâs nominee always goes for someone outside the nominating process, a fresh face, not one of the losers that people are probably tired of seeing.

Anyone, I mean anyone who falls for this family values crap again deserves what results. How dare anyone usurp the term as if conservatives' value family more than others. What utter crap!

Is cheating on your disabled wife and then leaving her for an heiress who is 17 years younger than you the "family values" the Republicans refer to?

Most Normal Americans are not interested in what the "xtian" lifestyle has to offer. It is not relevant in our modern society.

It is important to remember that no matter how much of a maverick McCain is he is still lightyears better then either of the two extreme liberals Clinton or Obama. Can anybody remember the Clinton family values??!!!
Posted by: JB | February 11, 2008 3:14 PM
Beware this guy...he's the next political trojan horse just like Bush in 2000. Remember Bush was the "compassionate conservative- uniter not divider" that divided this country- gay vs. straight, pro-life vs pro-choice, war vs anti-war...you name it he did it to divide this country. McCain will do the same things with these wingnuts backing him. Instead of addressing real issues we'll be talking about gay marriage and Roe v Wade again and again and again pitting one against the other.
Oh yeah and let's court the bride of satan- Ann Coulter, the drug-abusing Rush Limbaugh, and the indicted Tom DeLay.
What a crowd- so apparently family values is really about hatred, intolerance and "do as I say not as I do" mentality.
HELP- the GOP has been hijacked and they are hoping you are too dumb to realize it.

I'm afraid of family values. They hurt good people with good hearts. I have my own family values which I teach my children: Tolerance, Humility, Compassion. Kindness

"Gary Bauer, one of the leading advocates of family values...."
Could you POSSIBLY have said "leading advocates of *so-called* family values"? Not all of us think that intolerance and bigotry are family values, thank you.

What a pathetic pack of posts!!! If the 'tolerance' crowd would quit being so INTOLERANT against Christians, maybe they'd actually come to realize that they stand for compassion, all the while holding strong convictions... just like you. Whether that means we'll never get along, sadly perhaps.
And just to nitpick - BRIAN, I don't get how Bush could have turned pro-life and pro-choice against eachother. They have always butted heads and I don't see either side giving in to the other, so they'll always be at "war."

Keep it up, WB, and you're going to end up with kids that are nice, normal, productive members of society. Can't you at least teach a little bit of bigotry?

Well Steve...while you don't like the posts, I don't like the fact that because of Bushs' religious beliefs, that stem cell research doesn't have the backing it needs to provide new wonders in health care. I don't like the continuing debates over Roe V Wade every year when to most Americans it is settled law. I don't believe that our government should be run by End timers.

Gary Bauer? Yeccch.
And how annoying that the media continues the myth that only rabid conservatives are "values voters". Liberals, moderates and other non-conservatives vote on values also - honesty, diversity, inclusiveness, sharing, participation, etc. It's ridiculous that "values" got to be a code word for anti-gun control, anti-gay, anti-abortion, and pro-Bible!

The only way I could force myself to vote for McLiar, is if Romney is his running mate, the chances are slim and none.He has probably offered that to the Governor of Florida, or the Huckster from Arkansas, so they will get what they deserve for supporting him. Besides I heard a piece about McCains facial cancer and it is the type that could gravitate unexpectedly to the brain and cause irrational behavior, and in some cases even death. Although I wouldn't wish that on anyone, you would need a back up who could do the job. Besides as we get closer to the election and the economy becomes a full blown recession, we would need a person like Romney to address that issue. Some folks may not like Romney and he turned the Olympics around, probably the biggest reason McCain doesn't like Romney is he made the Senator's prediction of costing the taxpayers a Billion and a half dollars....Wrong ended up around four hundred and fifty million, McCain looked foolish and he was trying to take it out on Romney during the campaign. But regardless of that as a conservative, without Romney as his running mate, I'll just stay home this election cycle.

Bush pretty much pooped in this pot anyway. Why do you think Huckabee floundered so badly?

Vote for McCain. Forget all the hate filled and threatening messages posted by others.
Posted by: Irene | February 11, 2008 9:40 PM
As for Paul Weyrich, who said he'd "never vote for McCain" today, I agree with Senator McCain's assessment of him:
""a pompous self-serving son of a bitch."

Flip-flop enough times fast enough, you'll look like your spinning.
Speaking of conservative spin, just waiting for Rush to endorse McCain.
Should happen any moment...

Family Value, GOP says. The only family value they are interested is how many children you can contribute to their needless wars around the world (Cheap security guards for war profiteers).
Posted by: Anonymous | February 12, 2008 10:50 AM
Don't let these 'family values' guys hijack another election. They are not about family values, they are all about acquiring and retaining power. They do not have the slightest notion what family values are.
Stay focused on the real issues....Iraq, the economy, health care.

Fidel don't like McCain either -must be a Dittohead.
CNN contributor Roland Martin, in an interview on Thursdays "American Morning" about Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhans apparent threat against law enforcement officials in a recent speech, tried to explain away the comments as "rhetoric," and tried to put them in the context of "the history of the Nation of Islam." "It is not like it is a surprise when you actually hear the kind of rhetoric."

I posted earlier and I'm still waiting to see a "tolerant" person be tolerant. Don't they just hate it when you get called out for being a hypocrite? feel good? Now... lets actually talk turkey.
