What sweet nothings might the Republicans be whispering about Barack Obama if he ends up being the Democratic nominee?
Fortunately, we don't have to wait to find out, since missives come out almost daily about both him and Hillary Clinton.
Here's the latest, a jab at Obama's history in the Illinois Statehouse for voting "present" from time to time (to time . . . )

Lame! Typical RNC.. They are so 20th century..

Unfortunately for the Republicans their candidate has more missed votes than Obama and any other member of congress...how sweet it is:)

Obama is all fluff.
Posted by: qster | February 11, 2008 1:24 PM
I personally thinks that's funny. But it will not change the fact that I have donated to and voted for Obama.

Tried by the Clinton Machine, with some help from the Edwards camp... in other words Asked and Answered.
I know you are just getting warmed up and will get us into the SWAMP soon...

Will you be John McCain's Valentine?
Actually I can't think about that right now as I am preoccupied with the thought that Quasi-Republican McCain would reinstate the draft for his fantasies of many fruitless and long wars. I think McCain will continue to build infrastructure in Iraq, and later in Iran, then continue to tell Americans and OUR infrastructure to go to hell.
Swamp--Benabong is right. Would you please do a story on how many votes McCain has missed in the senate? Thanks.

Oh. How very 'hard hitting'. I'm sure the Obama campaign is trembling. Thank goodness the Republic party frontrunner hasn't missed any votes. Oh, wait.

GOP should really avoid any 'romantic' type ads. Not really their stong point. Hopefully no underage congressional pages received a valentine.
Posted by: karl | February 11, 2008 1:48 PM
Ummmm trying to take Obama down by referencing 170 present votes out of 4,000 votes in the Illinois legislature isn't going to have much impact given Senator McCains voting record.

Well, the following records bare repeating apparently:
Clinton v. Obama on Legislative Experience:
Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term (6yrs.), and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law, (20) twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years.
These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress (www.thomas.loc.gov), but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you:
1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive. 16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.
There you have it, the fact's straight from the Senate Record.
Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.
During the first (8) eight months of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included
**the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law),
**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law),
**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law),
**The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more.
In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.
An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record. . . . RNC, bring it on!!
Obama 2008!

That's the best you can do??? too funny!
Posted by: jenn | February 11, 2008 2:01 PM
Wow. I hope the RNC spends several million dollars on TV time for that one. That's one hard-hitting ad they've got there. Nothing like a "present" vote to fire up the base and make even hard-core Obama supporters question whether they can support a man who'd cast a non-vote vote. (snark)
That ad will be particularly effective if Obama faces McCain. McCain has only missed 257 votes (56.6%) in the current Congress, including a recent vote for a green energy amendment which McCain claimed to support.
Posted by: Tom O | February 11, 2008 2:02 PM
This kind of political antics is exactly what Obama is out to "Change." By that, I mean that you can say whatever you want and we (Obama supporters) will vote for him in spite of it; moreover, because of it! As for this "present" thing, it does not even deserve a response, at least, not one I can print!
Posted by: John Wilson | February 11, 2008 2:04 PM
This is just a typical GOP attack, and it's a good sign that Obama is putting the fear of God into them. They wouldn't be attacking if they thought he wasn't a threat. YES WE CAN, folks! Dems, Indies, and GOP, too (oh how embarrassing for the party that they're losing votes to a Democrat). Love you too!
Posted by: Megan | February 11, 2008 2:09 PM
Clearly anyone who focuses on this issue _republican or Hillary backer - hasn't a clue how the Illinois state legislature works! This is a fraction of the total votes he casted. And yes, it's still funny despite it being misleading and distorting.

And Where was Mccain on the Stimulus Vote?
Answer: Not in Washington DC
Posted by: MasterHurrikane | February 11, 2008 2:34 PM
The GOPer's are going to be extra desperate this year with their "swiftboating", afterall, their running a crazy man (McCain) who is nearly 100 years old and thinks that staying in Iraq for 100 years would be great.
Bad news for the Wingnuts, no-one is buying your "swiftboat" crap anymore.

Huh? These Republicans are so stupid. Instead of them actually checking out Obama's voting record of over 4000 votes they're gonna listen to Clinton instead. Idiots.
Posted by: RuthieM | February 11, 2008 2:46 PM
Mrs. Clinton's legislative record as cited by Brn Skn Gurl is certainly impressive. Typical of the meaningful bills was: "10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship." That kind of leadership deserves something. Any suggestions?
Posted by: Darius | February 11, 2008 2:46 PM
I suppose it's encouraging that the RNC is now randomly attacking Obama (a Grammy win? typical Hollywood liberal!), but these have been pretty toothless.
Posted by: dal | February 11, 2008 2:49 PM
Same old politics from RNC as from Hillary --
"In the Illinois state Senate, Senator Obama voted 130 times 'present.' That's not yes, that's not no. That's maybe," Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a debate.
THE FACTS: Obama acknowledges that over nearly eight years in the Illinois Senate, he voted "present" 129 times. That was out of roughly 4,000 votes he cast, so those "presents" amounted to about one of every 31 votes in his legislative career.
Illinois legislators often vote "present" and for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes blocs of lawmakers do it as a protest in some dispute over rules and procedures. Obama was often joined in his "present" votes by 10 or 20 other senators.
In other cases, lawmakers do it to signal objections to the details of a measure that they support in principle. They also use "present" votes as strategic moves to defeat legislation or, of course, simply to avoid taking a firm position.
Clinton highlights several of Obama's "present" votes that she considers questionable.
Several involve abortion -- a ban on certain late-pregnancy abortions, a requirement that a minor's parents be notified and restrictions on a type of abortion where the fetus sometimes survives for short periods.
"A woman's right to choose ... demands a leader who will stand up and protect it," said one Clinton campaign mailer.
But the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council says Obama's "present" votes were actually part of a careful strategy to prevent those restrictions from passing.

Obama is not the strongest candidate so buckle up Obama supporters. He is easy to target, he is so vague and lacks experience and speaks nothing of what he will do when office. He is a crowd pleaser with his speeches. A good speaker is about all you see with this guy. It is scary to me he may have a chance to be our next president based on CNN pushing him and his speaking skills. Does anyone care about health care, jobs, solutions, experience anymore?
Vote Hillary 2008

LET’S GET THE FACTS Straight! OBAMA vote a total of 4,000 times in the Illinois Statehouse approximately 100 out of those 4,000 votes he voted yes, no or present. This is widely ACCEPTED in Illinois. This is done to show that, there are certain aspects of a bill or legislation that you PARTIALLY agree with therefore, instead of striking down the legislation fully, like most typical politicians does, you vote, yes (present) on the section you agree with or no on the section of the legislation you think needs to be fix before you can give it an OK vote.
The FACT is OBAMA’S Voting record is FAR more SUPERIOR than John McCain. DID YOU KNOW: John McCain DID NOT SHOW UP TO VOTE for the recent Economic Stimulus Package? Sen. OBAMA, as the under-dog in this race, did take time from is busy campaign to Show up and vote, like he did 4,000 times in Illinois.
The Republicans are praying to get Hillary in the trenches, but that dream is slipping further from reality, after OBAMA’S 5 History breaking wins over the weekend. The Republicans is sweating trying to come up with NONSENSE to try and slow down Obama’s march to victory. Obama is one of the very few squeaky CLEAN people we have left in politics today. They pull the Race card, that didn’t work, then they pull the Muslim card, that didn’t work either, because he his a CHRISTIAN! Now they are trying the voting record nonsense which Hillary brought up in the debate in SC. RNC, bring it on!! GOOD WILL ALWAYS CONQUOR EVIL!!
Remember: Nothing Can Stand In The Way of Millions of Voices Calling for Change in politics, Change We Can Believe In! There is NO Stopping this Progressive MOVEMENT now, because we are on the move with most of this country onboard, and thousands more flocking this campaign weekly!
YES WE CAN and WE WILL!! OBAMA 08!
Posted by: Mark Lawrence | February 11, 2008 4:13 PM
Is that all??? I think the issue of marking "present" in the ILLINOIS senate was already cleared up during the earlier debates...Bring it!!
Posted by: Paul | February 11, 2008 4:29 PM
Thank you!
This calls for me to send another donation to Obama!
Posted by: Mary | February 11, 2008 4:51 PM
When you can't win on the facts, throw mud on your opponent and hope it sticks.
Unfortunately for the GOP, even their own constituencies aren't buying it this time. Sure, they'll keep the bigots and zealots, but they're losing the independents and the rational republicans.
Before this is over, we'll see John McCain denounce an ad put out for his benefit. He will be defending Barack and it will be BEAUTIFUL.
Posted by: TheTruthHurts | February 11, 2008 4:54 PM
These must be the hard-hitting tactics Clinton says she can whether better than Obama. A funny Valentine but a toothless attack.
Posted by: Jeff V | February 11, 2008 4:56 PM
It's becoming more and more evident Obama wins the experience issue. Hillary's been on the political "scene" longer but that doesn't translate into experience. It translates into name recognition. For better or worse.
How did Obama write and pass legislation superior to Clinton? Maybe it's because he's been legislating 4 years longer than Clinton. I'm not going to hold it against him. But even in his 1st year as US Senator, he authored a bill that became law.
It's ok to have brains AND inspire people.
Posted by: Karen | February 11, 2008 4:58 PM
Oh, well you Obama supporters sure have it right: That's the best the GOP can do. You bet. There's obviously nothing out there that they can hit Obama with. Just keep telling yourselves that.
Oh, and John Wilson, thanks for letting everyone know that you care nothing for facts. You just want to vote for Obama and his "change." But, John Wilson, can you tell the class what exactly Obama will change? And what he has done to inspire this kind of blind faith in you?
Posted by: JB | February 11, 2008 5:04 PM
In fact, Obama and Clinton have missed fewer votes.
McCain has missed 255 of 450 votes cast in the Senate since January including every vote this year. That's according to the Democratic National Committee, which keeps a tally.
Obama has missed about 40 percent, or 170 votes, and Clinton has missed 24 percent, or 108 votes.
One of those missed votes was late Wednesday, when Senate Republicans blocked a bid by Democrats to add $44 billion to help the elderly, disabled veterans, the unemployed and businesses to an economic stimulus package.

Both deserve to be laughed at as much as voted against.

The only way to top the devastating effect of this ad would be to take a page out of the Bush/Rove playbook and start a rumor that Obama fathered a black child.
Posted by: Tom O | February 11, 2008 6:36 PM
Might've made sense if their nominee was going to be Huckabee - not McCain, a man who has the most missed votes of any candidate canidate that ever ran for President.
Unfortunately, McCain has no explanation for his missed votes. Obama on the other hand has a legitimate defense. Voting present is acceptable in the Illinois legislator. You don't have to make my word for it. Just ask Republican Senator Kirk Dillard
Posted by: Jimmie | February 11, 2008 7:29 PM
Obama voted present in only 130 out of 4000 votes, only 39 of which were questionable at best. That means less than 1% of the time did he vote 'present.' Sometimes you need to put the numbers in context. http://politicalmaelstrom.blogspot.com/
Posted by: Jesse | February 11, 2008 9:57 PM
Mark Lawrence,
So Obama voted for the stimulus package that will add over $150billion to the deficit? I thought the dems were that party of fiscal discipline?
Posted by: Terry | February 11, 2008 11:14 PM
agnostic democrat says the amount of "present" votes was a small fraction of the votes cast. It begs the question were all 130 "present" votes cast on frivious issues?

"I believe my party has gone astray. I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy." John McCain

As long as you're trying to get the facts straight, let's compare apples with apples.
The list is definitely slanted towards Obama's record. Please note the bias of listing Clinton's "more substantive" bills at the bottom of the list. And whether the Republicans or Democrats have the majority is a definite factor in whose bills finally pass, especially in attempting to override Bush's veto.
Some versions of the post circulating first say Obama has authored 820 bills in his first 8 yrs of elected service, and then end it with "since enter the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096."
Obama's Senate record:
110th Congress sponsored 113; co-sponsored 375
109th Congress sponsored 152; co-sponsored 427
Although the post says, "to save you the time," I was curious, so I decided to go to the trouble of looking up bills sponsored/co-sponsored by Senator Clinton on the Thomas site.
Here's the search tool - you can do the math yourselves:
http://thomas.loc.gov/bss/d108query.html
107th Congress 2001-2002
sponsored 161 bills co-sponsored 495
108th Congress 2003-2004
sponsored 138 bills co-sponsored 688
109th Congress 2005-2006
sponsored 177 bills co-sponsored 720
110th Congress 2007 -
sponsored 150 bills co-sponsored 477
A few of the bills passed into law
S.1422 : A bill to provide for the expedited payment of certain benefits for a public safety officer who was killed or suffered a catastrophic injury as a direct and proximate result of a personal injury sustained in the line of duty in connection with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Note: For further action, see H.R. 2882, which became Public Law 107-37 on 9/18/2001.
S.1622 : A bill to extend the period of availability of unemployment assistance under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act in the case of victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Note: For further action, see H.R. 3986, which became Public Law 107-154 on 3/25/2002.
S.2496 : A bill to provide for the establishment of investigative teams to assess building performance and emergency response and evacuation procedures in the wake of any building failure that has resulted in substantial loss of life or that posed significant potential of substantial loss of life, and for other purposes.
Note: For further action, see H.R. 4687, which became Public Law 107-231 on 10/1/2002.
S.1425 : A bill to amend the Safe Drinking Water Act to reauthorize the New York City Watershed Protection Program.
Note: For further action, see H.R.2771, which became Public Law 108-328 on 10/16/2004.
S.272 : A bill to designate certain National Forest System land in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico as a component of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
Note: For further action, see H.R.539, which became Public Law 109-118 on 12/1/2005.
S.1283 : A bill to amend the Public Health Service Act to establish a program to assist family caregivers in accessing affordable and high-quality respite care, and for other purposes.
Note: For further action, see H.R.3248, which became Public Law 109-442 on 12/21/2006.
Rather than trivializing her record by clumping resolutions honoring deceased Americans into the same category as bills passed into "law" maybe we should add some of the amendments she sponsored that were agreed to by the Senate, for example:
S.AMDT.2066 to H.R.3061 To provide funding for services for children relating to crises.
S.AMDT.2082 to H.R.3061 To make funding available under title V of the Public Health Service Act for mental health providers serving public safety workers affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
S.AMDT.155 to S.CON.RES.18 To establish a deficit neutral reserve fund for influenza vaccine shortage prevention.
S.AMDT.3147 to S.CON.RES.83 To restore funding for the Alzheimer's Association 24/7 Contact Center
S.AMDT.4361 to S.2766 To require that Congress be apprised periodically on the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement.
S.AMDT.4868 to H.R.5631 To make available from Operation and Maintenance, Defense-Wide, certain funds may be used for community-based programs that provide mental health and readjustment assistance to members of the National Guard and Reserve and their families on their return from deployment.
S.AMDT.1106 to H.R.2360 To require the Secretary of Homeland Security to report to Congress regarding the vulnerability of certain facilities and measures to provide greater security, and for other purposes.
S.AMDT.328 to H.CON.RES.83 To strengthen our national food safety infrastructure by increasing the number of inspectors within the Food and Drug Administration to enable the Food and Drug Administration to inspect high-risk sites at least annually, supporting research that enables us to meet emerging threats, improving surveillance to identify and trace the sources and incidence of food-borne illness, and otherwise maintaining at least current funding levels for food safety initiatives at the Food and Drug Administration and the United States Department of Agriculture.
S.AMDT.516 to S.1 To provide for the conduct of a study concerning the health and learning impacts of sick and dilapidated public school buildings on children and to establish the Healthy and High Performance Schools Program.
