NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sen. Hillary Clinton teared up this morning at an event at the Yale Child Study Center, where she worked while in law school in the early 1970s.
Penn Rhodeen, who was introducing Clinton, began to choke up, leading Clinton's eyes to fill with tears, which she wiped out of her left eye. At the time, Rhodeen was saying how proud he was that the sheepskin-coat, bell-bottom-wearing young woman he met in 1972 was now running for president.
"Well, I said I would not tear up; already we're not exactly on the path," Clinton said with emotion after the introduction.
Clinton is holding a roundtable discussion with Connecticut women to talk about childcare and healthcare in her primary contest with Barack Obama.
When Clinton got misty-eyed at an event in New Hampshire on Jan. 7, politicos and pundits filled hours discussing if it helped her, and Clinton eventually pointed to the moment as when she "found her voice" and turned the corner in the Granite State.
At the time, there was much debate if the candidate's emotional response to a question -- "How do you do it?"" -- was genuine or calculated.
Let the conversation begin again...

Do we really need a president who tears up all the time like she's watching some tearjerker movie all the time? In fact, if the Queen B does win, her presidency will be one big tearjerker.

Clinton sees her lead slipping away and turns on the waterworks yet again.
I hope the leaders of Iran, Syria, N. Korea, Pakistan, etc are equally impressed when she starts bawling in front of them to get her way.

Why do we have tear ducts?! Why even feel anything, if you aren't allowed to show emotion. It's not like she had an emotional breakdown. Geesh, people. I, for one, am glad to have someone show true emotions and empathy. And I'm voting for BARACK. Still, I support Hillary in being allowed to be more than a stiff robot in public.

Not again. Please tell me that Obama rescued some puppies on camera today to counter this tactic.

Oh, Pleeeze... Crying again? C'mon, we want a President of the united states, not a lying, calculating, tear-dripping, whiny Clinton leading the way... Give her some Kleenex and a return to the senate where she's done so much -- at least according to her -- between sniffles. D.

Hillary's a human being not a packaged perfect answer for everything automaton. I get misty when I visit my alma mater, does that make me unworthy of respect? Give it a rest Obamanuts.
Posted by: Joe de Nadie | February 4, 2008 11:09 AM
Wow how cynical you are. Hillary is a human and crying is a human emotion. I suppose if Obama tears up it would be called wondrous and hopeful. You people are really mean spirited fools, and here's a newsflash for you. If your big hope wins the nomination this Hillary support will NOT vote for Mr Hope, I have so learned that if you live in hope you die in despair, I'm for the strong, brilliant, experienced and supper vetted Hillary. Do you think NY State would like her that much if she were all the bad things you say?? No in conservative upstate NY respect is earned and earn it she has! Oh and by the way Obama zombies, whoever designed his posters left his ears out, why is that? Because he talks so much or because they resemble our currant president's ears?
Posted by: Elena | February 4, 2008 11:10 AM
The problem with Ms Clinton is that everyone knows she is so fake and calculating that even when she expresses what may be a genuine moment everyone has to question her sincerity. That does not bode well for building trust around the world.
Posted by: Scott Wilson | February 4, 2008 11:11 AM
Using her husband to advance her career, crying up sympathy... none of these things advance the cause of woman's rights.
I'm all for showing emotion outwardly and I'm against sexual discrimination, but if I were a woman, I would be offended and a little embarrassed by this.
I'm not suggesting that she "act like a man", I'm saying she's using her gender as leverage.

We should not forget too quickly that the present occupant of the White House cried frequently , and he still cries

The Clinton's are crooks, always have been and always will be. Every move they make is poll-driven, every word is calculated. They are masters of the Big Lie. It is time to move on, Barak Obama is the right man at the right time. The sordid Clinton duo are slime from the past.

Don't women find this patently phony behavior by Clinton insulting to their intelligence? Doesn't it argue against women being elected to high office? At best, Clinton is demonstrating that she is too emotionally unstable to be president, and at worst, that her lust for power is so utterly cynical and contemptible that she will do or say anything to achieve it.

I had thought the first time that this happened in NH was GENUINE, that HRC was not the cold calculatiing, underhanded candidate that many of her detractors proclaim. Now, after Barack Obama seems to be on the verge of beating her in many places (just like IA leading into NH), threatening her canidacy anew...on come the water-works.
I was wrong. She seems to be a self-interested phony. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on ME.

Posted by: Turner D | February 4, 2008 11:15 AM
If she is so crying like a baby, she is unfit as a president of the most powerful country in the world. If it is just an act to get attention as Obmama's Sun is rising; this magic will not work this time.

For those with short memories... President Bush teared up on Oprah 7 1/2 years ago when describing his wife and children. It is what it is. Obama licks lips alot, McCain curses people out, Bill Clinton doodles, Huckabee bites his nails, Romney strikes a pose for photos. Let's get back to the issues.

Funny how she always cries when she's losing in the polls--she's down by more than 10 points in Connecticut.
What an opportunist and certainly not representative of the kind of President I want to lead our country forward.

I respect Hillary Clinton a great deal, but this is outlandish and not appropriate. I think emotion is laudable, but why does she only cry on the eve of a primary and when asked about herself. I've never seen her tear up for other people. I think its telling, and I think its manipulative.

well. she's desperate for the votes again, so of course she cries. look what it did for her in new hampshire. pretty soon voters will catch on to her...
-being a first lady does not equate to experience
-she wants it too much
-bush, clinton, bush, clinton. how does that equal change? she's the expected candidate.
i have no respect for the woman. her husband publically humiliates her by cheating on her and she stays with him. you know why? so she could run for president. greedy.
now all the hillary lovers will bash me for my comments. go ahead. it's expected. but then again, so is she.

seems to me we are being super critical of Hillary. On the one hand she is seen as a cold and unemotional, on the other hand when she displays feelings we begin to puntificate about her humanity. Which is it America?
Are we so blinded by celebrity power, we have forgotten Oprah is playing the biggest race card? What's next for her under Obama's Presidency?

Posted by: Don | February 4, 2008 11:25 AM
Hillary's emergence from a potential Obama New Hampshire "blowout" was readily understandable. In a carefully calculated move Bill and Hilla once again played the "victim card". A strategy that was so successful in countering the Monica scandal, when Hillary, the serial "enabler", and Bill, the serial "groper" put on an academy award performance for several months to convince gullible woman to pull the sympathy lever in the voting booth for them. Now it's Connecticut's turn to experience the Clinton charade. Greg Neubeck

As a woman, Hillary does not have my vote. She is not a strong woman. What is she going to do when the pressure of foreign countries come upon her. Is this what American wants in a president? She cries when she thinks it will benefit her. She will do anything to win. She is a desperate woman now since Obama is even with her in the poll.
Posted by: Mitty | February 4, 2008 11:25 AM
RE: Finding her voice
It's amazing that in 35 years of experience she only recently found her voice.
It worked the first time but if the media has a shred of integrity, it won't work a second. What could be more calculated than using her strongest move thus far a day before Super Tuesday?

Whether or not a person shows emotion by shedding a tear does not determine the type of president she would be for the United States! We aren't talking about a "tearjerker movie," we're talking about real life and real situations that have had an impact on her life. If somebody is going to discredit HRC for president because she has shown emotion at certain times is not in touch with reality. Is it not the case that with the general population of people that women are more emotional then men? Wake up - judge her and every other candidate on the issues and quit being so petty! These misogynistic beliefs so many people are displaying in the US does not give us much credit for being a cultured and well rounded society. It's time to move forward and be progress-minded and not keep regressing backwards.

Yes, that is all we need the leader of the free world tearing up and showing emotion all the time. Never mind our enimies through-out the world. Islamic-facism do not respect women in any sense, we are trying to elect one that gets emotional and cries all the time. That will really get a lot of respect from middle eastern leaders and the heavily mach culture performing the southern invasion of the U.S. and i am sure Putin will have loads of respect fro her to.

How do you make a hormone? Don't vote for her!

I think that crying the first time the day before you are about to lose an election can make you look more human; crying a second time in the exact same circumstance three weeks later, makes you look either weak or highly calculating.

I can't believe this person is still in the race. She's already talked about the government taking more control of the economy, and now she's talking about garnisheeing wages for those who opt not to have medical insurance. Why are there so many socialists in this country?! Move to Canada!

Well, she and Bill will really cry for real when Obama wins on Tuesday. They are such phonies!
Posted by: yoli | February 4, 2008 11:40 AM
Hillary's tears are very real. Every time she slips in the polls she cries. She's crying for herself and her ambition; nothing else.

she's toast! the last thing we need is crying in the white house as we oppose worldwide islamo- fascism!!
please don't kill us Mr. Al-Qaeda Jihadist- I'll cry for you...

She may have something to cry about after Super Tuesday...
Posted by: Patriot | February 4, 2008 11:42 AM
It's simply amazing how she only tears up the day before contests where she stands to lose. She's been in front of cameras and media for decades .... and she's only EVER let herself be seen tearing up the day before an primary. America ... please see through the political theatre. Don't let yourself be manipulated. If you like Hillary because she cries .... vote for Obama tomorrow and give her a reason not to stop.

If you just take a second to think about it, she never tears up out of compassion or empathy. It's always self focused. She doesn't cry in response to the pain of others but in response to her own situation. We need a president who keeps their own emotions in check unless it involves... oh,I don't know...someone besides her as the poor mistreated soul of charity and self sacrifice?
Try being called Hitler for eight years and never once responding in anger.

As the poll numbers dramatically drop, I'm watching campaign TV spots with the following:
"I have the experience. I have been vetted. I am the only one tough enough to stand up to the Republican attacks. I have the experience to be ready on day-one. I..."
Doesn't the script now call for Bill to lose his temper with the media and slur Senator Obama with his list of over 80 grievances?

Can't Hillary have real emotions and be allowed to cry without it being a ploy. I'm sure given her history at the Study Center and her relationship with the folks can make a person emotional coming back. Geez. I hate for her emotions to be taken negatively. I'm sure there have been many Presidents crying behind closed doors and teary eyed on occassions. But being a female - OMG, she can't handle it. Give me a break. That's the problem with President Bush, I think the well is dry there and he should have lots to cry about. Democrat in 2008! Yahoo. Go Hillary! I got your back. :)

Real men don't cry Hillary
Posted by: johnb | February 4, 2008 11:45 AM
The difference between Bush and other presidents crying and Hillary crying is that the men are moved to emotion about the plight of others. That is an admirable trait. Not so with Hillary. All of her tears have been about herself. Bush would not be president today if he started crying because he worked so hard and it looked like he was going to lose a primary.
Hillary's tears can only be viewed in one of two ways: political calculation or the outburst of someone unsuited for the office of the President.

I think this is a non-story. She clearly was touched by the introduction.
I do not think this is going to affect the voting one bit.
Posted by: Dan, TX | February 4, 2008 11:46 AM
There is nothing wrong and certainly nothing calculated about showing honest emotion. She was reacting to a man's tears this morning (and apparently there was nothing wrong with the man crying, was there?)

Wow..a fodder piece on Clinton. Maybe we could have a fodder piece on McCain when he said Iraq will be a long war and there will be more wars. Maybe a little more meaningful than moist eyes.
