The Swamp

by Aamer Madhani

Israel’s ambassador to the United States said today that Iran was becoming a “very, very dangerous ticking bomb” and urged the world to take a more active role in forcing Iran to give up its uranium-enrichment program.

A National Intelligence Estimate issued by U.S. agencies in December concluded that Iran suspended its nuclear arms program in 2003, but the Bush administration has stressed that the report confirms that Iran had a program and continued desire to build nuclear weapons.

Sallai Meridor, Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., echoed the Bush administration call that Iran remains a serious threat, but he also upped the ante in making a comparison to the international community’s slowness to head off Adolph Hitler in the 1930s.

“The writing is on the wall like in the ‘30s,” Meridor told defense reporters in Washington. “It’s not hidden, it’s stated. Everybody who doesn’t close his eyes can see it. Everybody that is not deaf can hear it. The world should act and act now and not repeat the terrible mistakes that it made in the past.”

It’s important to note that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called Israel a rotten state, has declared that the nation needs to be obliterated, and has expressed doubt about the Holocaust.

Still, it was interesting to hear Meridor say he believes that Iran is the top concern of Israel's people, even over emerging worries about Hamas in Gaza.

Meridor said Hamas is smuggling longer-range missiles, anti-tank weapons, mines and other weapons into Gaza through the border with Egypt, and that Israel may be forced to take “action.”

Any potential military action by Israel would be complicated.

In 2006, Israel faced tough fighting in southern Lebanon in a 33-day conflict with Hezbollah. Meridor said in similar fashion fighters in Gaza are building deep-buried trenches. Unlike southern Lebanon, Gaza is densely populated, and any potential incursion could be far bloodier than the 2006 fighting that left about 1,000 dead.

“It’s true that in southern Lebanon they were largely shooting [at us] from within the villages,” Meridor said. “But Gaza is one large village if you will. Tactically, it does make a difference..to a potential action.”

"ticking bomb" is very scary languauge to hear from an Israeli official. It is the same languauge they use to justify assassination attacks.

It means a very specific thing to them, leading up to a very specific response.

Israel said what? I'm so surprised.

I get this feeling that Turncoat Holy Joe Liebertoad is behind this nonsense somehow.

Every once in awhile Holy Joe and his Republic Party pals feel the urge to tell everyone that the sky is going to fall if we don't invade, bomb and occupy some country that they don't like.

Me thinks it has something to do with this:

Come on Chitrib! How can you be this slow?
3 1/2 hours? No postings?

Mark;
We know you need to eat and see the kids, but come on! Get an intern or somebody to hit the feaking accept button
while you kick back on the couch.

What else would they say.

Here we go again - bring out the Holocaust and use the U.S.'s children to murder a nation because of Israel's government's ethnocentric desire to dominate the region. WMD's are in ISRAEL! Why doesn't our government demand that Israel remove its WMD's? Dream on, D.C. is a "puppet" of the government of Israel. Should any Congressmen or President defy Israel, AIPAC and the Israel lobby would attempt to destroy them.

The most conniving enemy of the U.S. is Israel because this is the only nation out for itself at the cost of destroying the entire Middle East and dragging our young people into fighting its wars of paranoia.

If Israel wants to take Iran out, let Israel do it by itself. Iran has NO WMD's; Israel does. What is Israel afraid of, or maybe Israel believes that the lives of young Israelis are worth more than the lives of young Americans.

WE are already in the Iraqi quagmire that Israeli's Neo-Con emissaries orchestrated to serve their country,Israel. They certainly weren't thinking of spreading democracy throughout the Middle East, but rather insuring the stranglehold that Israel has on the Palestinians and making certain that no other country in the Middle East achieve the technology that Israel stole from the U.S.

READ BELOW:
"The new year started off on a sour note for the controversial U.S.-Israeli "strategic relationship" when two reports from the Department of Defense and one from the General Accounting Office (GAO) highlighted Israel's espionage activities against the United States and Israeli thefts of U.S. military technology secrets, and confirmed that Israel has illegally retransferred U.S. technology from the largely U.S.-funded Lavi fighter program to China....

"An espionage operation run by the intelligence organization responsible for collecting scientific and technologic information for [Israel] paid a U.S. government employee to obtain U.S. classified military intelligence documents. [This is a reference to the 1985 arrest of Jonathan Pollard, a civilian U.S. naval intelligence analyst who provided Israel's LAKAM espionage agency an estimated 800,000 pages of classified U.S. intelligence information.]

"Several citizens of [Israel] were caught in the United States stealing sensitive technology used in manufacturing artillery gun tubes.

"Agents of [Israel] allegedly stole design plans for a classified reconnaissance system from a U.S. company and gave them to a defense contractor from [Israel].

"A company from [Israel] is suspected of surreptitiously monitoring a DOD telecommunications system to obtain classified information for [Israeli] intelligence.

"Citizens of [Israel] were investigated for allegations of passing advanced aerospace design technology to unauthorized scientists and researchers.

"[Israel] is suspected of targeting U.S. avionics, missile telemetry and testing data, and aircraft communications systems for intelligence operations.

"It has been determined that [Israel] targeted specialized software that is used to store data in friendly aircraft warning systems.

"[Israel] has targeted information on advanced materials and coatings for collection. An [Israeli] government agency allegedly obtained information regarding a chemical finish used on missile re-entry vehicles from a U.S. person..."*

Whaaaa?

Not posted immediately?

How 'bout not posted while relevant or timely?

How about posted after everyone connected to the situation is dead from old age?

Israel needs to go to the UN. Why do they usually want us to be their attack dog? Why does the USA pay Israel billions of dollars each year--even though they are a developed nation with the highest percentage of scientists and engineers for a developed nation?

Iran is a threat, but Israel has as much, if not more, to fear from having Obama, who has spoken at Palestinian fund raisers, as president of the U.S. And now he has anti-Semite Farrakhan endorsing him. Jewish voters had better think twice about voting Democrat in November.

Israel is quite funny in makin that kind of comment... trying to "Label Iran as a Rebel" - kind of thing. Already IAEA has appreciated Iran. Iran is now not at all vulnerable which was thought to be earlier..

Go tell your fairytales somewhere else, you moron.

The rightwing lunitic fringe is just one giant propaganda parade on acid, the best part about it is they actually beieve that there are people out there who will beilieve their BS....not gonna Happen this time, Wingers!

OBAMA 08!!!

Yes Iran is a danger to the TERRORIST state of Israel and with any luck Iran will NUKE ISRAEL off of the face of the planet!!!!!

Jewish voters had better think twice about voting Democrat in November.

yes Sol....those pesky anti-semites are all hiding in the wings waiting to vote for Obama because they know that at least one of his supporters is an anti-semite. That makes him more of a threat than Iran. Judging by your fear, you must be a staunch republican.

Sol...one more thing. I grew up believing that Israel was the victim in this whole middle east mess. That was over 60 years ago. Our problem in the middle east is directly a result of helping Israel. Over the years I have grown tired of the same old conflict. Maybe you could get the rest of your jewish friends to come together and solve the damn problem instead of worrying about the democrats.

Sallai Meridor's comments are intended to fuel our march to war against Iran. It is awful to have to stomach the offensive bile pouring out of Ahmadinejad and no one wants Iran to possess the bomb.

But we must consider the best way to stop them from attaining it. First, they may only need the "Japanese" option or the ability to produce one if necessary. This carries a significant deterrence without sparking a local arms race.

The West has the ability to rejuvenate Iran's crumbled economy which is a strong enticement to peace. Iran has helped the US in Afghanistan and rhetoric aside, helped the US in Iraq, yet Iran and the US continue to escalate tensions without considering the outcomes of confrontation.

The people of the US need to realize that name calling statements like Meridor are part of the problem, not the solution.

Why should we care? Israel has helped make us the most hated country in the world already. Let them and the rest of the world deal with their own problems, we have our problems to deal with without them.

Iran has attacked no one in the modern era, although it has been attacked brutally, much to the joy of Washington and Israel.

Indeed, when America attacked Iraq, Sharon was constantly promoting the invasions of both Syria and Iran also.

Israel has attacked every one of its neighbors, some more than once, as with Lebanon where its efforts have killed in total on the order of 20,000 people.

Israel holds about 3 1/2 million people in virtual servitude. It is an apartheid regime as brutal as the old South Africa, and authorities like Bishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela have said so

Israel has nuclear weapons, having lied, cheated and stolen materials to get them. It lies to the world every day about their existence.

Israel kills people almost daily. They call them "militants," whatever that means, so the press doesn't question multiple extra-judicial murders.

Israel holds about 9,000 people in illegal detention, including much of the elected government of Gaza. It also tortures them.

Israel shared its nuclear technology with the old South African regime before its collapse. Undoubtedly there were favorable economic exchanges behind it. South Africa had produced a small number of nuclear weapons which were quietly removed by the U.S. after the government’s collapse.

I wonder how many clear-thinking people in the world would agree with Israel's characterization of Iran?

Israel is itself the ticking bomb. Always making new demands, always expanding its armed forces, always ready to make dirty behind-the-scenes deals in its favor as in the case of South Africa or the invasion of Suez, always taking new property from decent people in the West Bank, and always blubbering about peace it doesn’t want.
