Hello everyone!
In less than two hours, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will go one-on-one in Austin, Texas, at a debate sponsored by CNN - -their first face-off since meeting in Hollywood at the end of January. I will be blogging from my post in Manhattan while my colleagues cover the action on the ground in Texas.
If this sounds like the lead-in to a prizefight, well, that's just about what it is. This is the first of two debates the Democratic presidential candidates are scheduled to hold before the crucial, delegate-rich Texas and Ohio primaries on March 4.
Clinton, who has lost the last 10 state primaries and caucuses to Obama, desperately needs to win, and win big. To do that, she must use this debate-- and the next one on MSNBC on February 26 --to convince voters that she truly is not only tough enough and experienced enough for the nation's top job, but diplomatic enough to overcome the polarizing image that dogs her.
Obama, who has been on an impressive roll, wants to keep that roll going through the next big contests and beyond. To do that, he must effectively counter Clinton's charges that he is, in
Texas parlance, all hat and no cattle. And, he must not get lost in the verbal weeds when talking about policy.
Given what has transpired in the last three weeks, it will be interesting to see if the sarsaparilla sweetness that drenched the last encounter between these two will continue or if they are now locked and loaded for a showdown tonight. The stakes have never been higher in this race.
Stay tuned. I'll be back at 7 pm CST. Please join me then.

this is an important vote,
if you want Vision vote Obama - for DiVision vote HILLIARY - if you want lots of experience, vote McCain, if you want a bad flashback, vote HILLIARY - if you want campaign finance reform, vote McCain - if you want special interest/big corporation abuse of campaign financing, vote HILLIARY - if you want honesty, vote McCain or Obama or Huckabee or Paul, but if you want "i did not have sex with that woman" and "vast right wing conspiracy" , vote for the Clintons - if you want high standards, vote Obama or McCain, if you want double standards, vote HILLIARY - if you love Nafta, Vote HILLIARY - if you love earmarks, vote for HILLIARY - if you love candidates that plant questions in the audience, vote HILLIARY - if you want candidates that tell you where they stand on immigration, vote Obama or McCain or Paul or Huckabee - if you want a candidate who waffles on immigration, vote HILLIARY - if you want a strong defense, vote McCain, if you want someone who will not offend other countries, vote Obama but if you want an offensive first spouse, vote for the Clintons - if you want a president who actively tries to count delegates that are not eligible by their own party rules, then vote HILLIARY - if you want a candidate that wants us to win the war in Iraq, vote McCain (or Huckabee)- if you wants a candidate who will get us out of Iraq, vote Obama (or Paul), but if you want a candidate who votes for a war and then criticizes the war, fails to apologize for her vote and blames her vote on someone who is not running against her for office, then by all means vote HILLIARY - if you want someone who believes in restricted government, vote Ron Paul - if you want a million ideas for a massively expanded government, vote HILLIARY, if you want to look backward, vote for HILLIARY, but if you want change in washington, then no more bush-clinton-bush-clinton - one day (soon) the US will have a woman president, but if we want a good one, we must wait .......
there is NO good reason to vote for HILLIARY except to vote for a woman just because she is a woman - and that is sexist to say the least

Texas voters won't buy the born-again John Edwards line. Barack should resist the temptation to pander to union bosses in this debate. Workers exercise the right to vote in secrecy. It's too bad Barack is supporting legislation to take that right away at work, but he can still learn from that mistake.

If these sarcastic Clintonites keep referring to Sen. Obama as "the Messiah," I assume it is fair game to refer to the Clintons--the stars of financial scandals past, present and to come--as "the Profits."

Cliton will win the debate. She knows she needs to win if she wants to stay in.

I understand your hatred for Hillary, but at least spell her name right.

I think Hilary is very intelligent and has great ideas, but I am not sold. Obama is extremely likable and a great speaker, but I am not sold. I still don't think anyone can make that much of a difference with the government that they have to work with. There is too much red tape, gridlock, and waste way to much money. Sure they both have good ideas, but how many do you really, really think will come to fruition? There are so many special interest groups and oposition. It takes forever to get things off the ground. They may have the best of intentions in mind, but look at what they are up against, gridlock and red tape.

Look for Hillary to interrupt Obama as much as possible without crossing the line of "rudeness." She will hope to throw him off his game and off his message and confuse him enough to say something foolish and then pounce on it. That's my call. I'll check later to see if I was right - again.

I would like to know who each of the candidates would put into key leadership positions: Vice President, Chief of Staff, Secretary of State, Attorney General, etc. These positions are crucial and impact future decisions of an administration. If they are unable to give definite final choice names, I would like to know the "possible" candidates. That would give insight into the direction of their administration.

I think Hillary is doing a great job. I like Obama as well, but I don't like the fact that he is for giving drivers licenses to illegals. I live in an area where we border on Mexico and we have tons of people here who shouldn't be here. Why is it that they should just feel that they are entitled to ILLEGALLY cross the border, while everyone else in the world comes over LEGALLY and waits their turn. I cannot tell you how horrible the traffic is and how many uninsured motorists there are that get into an accident and don't have a leg to stand on.

Last night, Obama supporter Texas State Senator Kirk Watson was asked to name Obama's legislative accomplishments. He failed to name a single one. Heres a few

1). William Ayers, in the age of terrorism, is Obama's Willie Horton."
Former counterterrorism expert Larry Johnson, Huffington Post, Feb. 16, 2008.
There has been sudden information linking Obama to a former member of the radical Weathermen Underground group that claimed responsibility for a dozen bombings between 1970 and 1974. The former Weatherman, William Ayers, told the New York Times. I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough. Obama and Ayers were members of the board of Woods Fund of Chicago, between 1999 and 2002. In addition, Ayers contributed to Obama's election to the Senate. They lived within a few blocks of each other in the trendy Hyde Park section of Chicago, and moved in the same liberal-progressive circles. Larry Johnson, a former counterterrorism official at the CIA and the State Department, predicts Republicans would seize on the Ayers case, and raises questions about Obama's judgment.

Mirror mirror on the wall. I think both believe in the same things. Obama can beat McCain but Clinto will be in for a fight due to Anti Bill republicans.

Here is a thought: So far, I think they are being way too nice and no mud slinging, which is unusual for how close this race is. I think you will definately see the two of them on the same ticket. The democrats would love this. It is a for sure win. Then, whichever candidate is the Vice President, can run again for president after 8 years, assuming that they go 2 terms. Potentially, the democrats could be in office for 16 years. I know it is a stretch, but food for thought. I have always thought this since they began. They are not too far apart on the issues.

a crafty debater - Obama is keeping the distance on issues very close. Hillary is not creating any significant distance on issues which she must have to sweep Texas...

First off, I like Obama but Hilliary is an all aroun on the spot speaker. She has the details down while Barak is pretty scripted. Hilliary needs to get her act together and attack Obama when he slips up, which, unfortunatly, has yet to happen,it will be worth watchin. Go Obama!

We need Hillary. Barack's economic and other plans are a joke. He will be another W who doesn't have answers and will have to depend on aides whoever they will be. Perhaps his spiritual advisor, Rev. Wright, who gave Louis Farrakhan, black muslim leader, a lifetime achievement award. Or what about his numerous comments about "white" america such as 9/11 was a wake up call to white america. Why does he not get questioned about this? Especially with recent comments by his wife! We need a leader and that is Clinton. People want to bash Bill, but his presidency has easily been the best presidency since in our lifetimes!

Get real - we will help Mexico with their economy. What a laugh. Are we that gullible

Also, immigration. Both canidates are wrong, in my opinion, when it comes to immigration policies. Get the illegal aliens out because they're the ones breaking our economy. Democrats need to toughen up and get to work making the illegal immigrants go thre=ough the process of becoming legal. Until they have a green card... stay out of our great nation.
Posted by: ellyn | February 21, 2008 8:58 PM
I am not thrilled about giving drivers licences to illegals either -- but how do you expect them to get insurance without one! THAT is why Obama is in favor of giving DL to illegals. Then they have no excuse for being illegal on items such as insurance. A DL is not proof of citizenship.

Why was the American flag not proudly displayed for this American presidential debate? No where was the American flag to be seen - either on the candidates
attire or on the platform.
Posted by: MM | February 21, 2008 9:07 PM
I trust Obama to surround himself with excellent people. He has proven himself to have good judgement in that regard. He selected a campaign staff that knew the primary season did not end on super Tuesday. He is an executive office type person. He inspires and listens to smart/talented people. THAT will be a change from what we have today.
Posted by: lois | February 21, 2008 9:12 PM

Posted by: Sharon | February 21, 2008 9:14 PM
People, people, stop this charade about Obama. Who is him anyways. To me he is talk and no foam. Are we going to make another mistake for not checking the facts? Do we fall in love with just words? Are we just followers? I am not, I follow the facts. Who was the best president we had in the last 20 years? Yes, it was President W. Clinton: lots of jobs available, good salaries, no wars, etc. Then there was the Monica affair. My question is: what was the difference between him and President Kennedy? One was exposed the other was not. Also, there were the Republicans trying to dig dirt to stop the Clintons to achieve their goals. Republicans did this from day one because they knew what opposition they had.

What about Hillary using John Edwards words about immigration and the fact that she never passed the Washington bar exam. Maybe that is why she is in politics.

You had that same inspiration with Bush for the last 8 years. Remember? Bush talked a good game also...can you eat better today than 8 years ago ? no! I guess people just do not learn.

It doesnt matter who gets in(although Hillary is most annoying and duplicitous) they will be puppets to the big corporations, and the elite(i.e.Rockefellers,Rothschilds,kissinger,morgans,and their Bildeberger ilk).

Support for the middle class, lower taxes...more jobs...Clintons balanced the budget. Bill did it once Hillary can see to it getting done again.
Posted by: Tina | February 21, 2008 9:36 PM
Everything sounds very nice...but where Obama will get all the money to do what he is talking about?
Obama believes in miracle or Santa...Hilary not...She is more consistent
Posted by: Tina | February 21, 2008 9:39 PM
Moment of crisis that tested Obama the most? oh we went the pity route...single mom, drugs, but I made it....
Moment of crisis that test Hilary the most? Well thats an understatement and a stupid question. Who wrote these questions?
Posted by: Tina | February 21, 2008 9:42 PM
Maybe Clinton is too soft but Obama never answer any question directly...I don't trust him...he makes evetything sounds to easy...and we know isn't true.

Obama blames Hillary for voting for invading Irak. I understand that he did not vote at all. Wasn't his moral obligation to vote? Who do you prefer: someone who take a position, or someone wo does not? Not only he did not vote, but later he blames others for doing their job and taking a position? I, without a boubt, prefer the one who does her job and takes a position. Please think about this because it gives me a clear idea of character.

Hitlery is a hare's breath away from Communism and Barack possibly supports radical Islam(reference his forign advisor who wants us to donate to Hamsa and Hezbullah),and Mccain is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations(er,bilderbunglers). So, vote Ron Paul or we are in for a bumpy ride.

It is clear to me that this so called debate by CNN is/was designed to favor Obama. This wasn't a debate...I wanted to see the candidates interact, given a chance to respond to each other.I watched this debate because I wanted to hear details, learn the differences between their platforms. All I heard & saw was more fluff from Obama, protection of Obama from the interview team, some great comments from Clinton when she got the chance, and NO details from Obama on his platform. i think Senator Clinton was outstanding despite the circumstance. I don't care if Obama is winning in the polls, I don't hear anything from him that has substance. I'm voting for Senator Clinton.
Posted by: kermit571@mac.com | February 21, 2008 10:00 PM
I've recorded then timed the responses and Obama is getting on average 2 minutes more for each question.

Where's the BEEF? Like the 75 million pounds of diseased meat that was served to our schoolchildren.
Why does no one ask Hillary Clinton about her ties to MONSANTO and Tyson Chicken. That's where the Clintons started long ago. They staffed the government with MONSANTO people. We now have big food conglomerates with no standards. That why we get dogfood with strange ingredients that test like protein that kills dogs and serve disgusting meat to schoolchildren.
Are you concerned with the effects this relationship has to our health our children and even our dogs! C'mon! ASK HER THE QUESTION!

Just why is Obama being fenced off as the first black to be in the hunt for the White House? He is half white. His mother is white and he was raised in Hawaii then onto Columbia and Harvard. That is hardly an example of a down trodden black American from the hood. What a phoney use of race.

We get it: McCain is old. He knows everyone, have done everything, have been everywhere.
Posted by: V | September 26, 2008 10:39 PM
LOL, why wasn't Palin part of the comments after the debate. Its so funny, the republicans had to get Rudolph Juliani to comment instead of Palin.
Posted by: Eric | September 26, 2008 10:52 PM
I don't exactly approve of Pres. Bush's policies but I think McCain is a turncoat by ripping the Pres. so much while he is in office. He was exceptionally rude during the debate as well. Plus he was condescendingly reassuring to the Veterans who have really bad benefits in some parts of the country. I was an undecided Republican before this, and I was really, really trying but the thought of McCain having significant health problems, or God forbid worse as President and his bad behavior generally finished me off :(
Posted by: rebruss | September 26, 2008 11:53 PM
I did not think that McCain looked very presidential when he did not even look Obama in the eye..not once. McCain could not even answer the spain question, instead he took a swipe at Obama, I don't want someone like that in the fricken white house, we have enough problems without a grouchy old man doing things of htis nature.
Posted by: American | September 27, 2008 4:47 AM
Debate was a draw: The "surge" argument is all but irrelevant. In this regard, Obama failed to clearly establish that McCain has no strategic experience in keeping the US out of wars, only tactical - in fighting them, as many of the US generals also have - the US President needs a new, evolved vision of peace and global stability, an alternative to the bellicosity of recent times, which only Obama has strongly expressed. For the good of the US and the World, McCain should remain a Senator, offering a perspective from his experience, not in leading a country.

-He wants government to take over healthcare. That means less choices for individuals and more power to politicians-burocrats.
-Wants to destroy jobs by decreasing freedom with extra regulation, higher business taxes and higher capital gains taxes and with it drive businesses out of the country
-Will give each individual $500 rebate check but take away at least $960 on everybody making more than $32000 when he repeals Bush's tax cuts and with it increases tax rates across the board. Democrats wanted to ban the oil shale production this years but they failed. They want to limit offshore oill drilling only to areas which are farther than 50 miles from the coast, but those areas have almost no oil. They dont care about you they serve the radicall enviromentalist
-Citizens against government waste gave Obama a score of 10% and mccain got 100%. Obama is a big spender
-Obama will increase gas prices when he increases taxes the oil companies with "windfall profit tax" and uses that money to give everybody a $500 rebate check. This will increase gas price by $500 in the coming years.
-He wants to make United States a communist country like Cuba and North korea where the small political elite controls the lives of regular people who are their tax slaves
-China is prospering now becouse they have now lower taxes and a more capitalist society than US depite the fact that they call themselves "commmunist". The solution for US is smaller government.
People in United states love Freedom and Individual Liberty, but obama and the rest of the democrats in congress want to tax and regulate the productive members of the society, steal your money and give the money to the unproductive members of the society including politicians, burocrats and union leads.
Dont give up your personal freedoms vote for a limited and accountable government with low taxes and low spending which supports personal freedoms and choice. This is why US prospered and Soviet Union didn't.

I think oboma should win because the way we going now we all are going to be in dept. The gas is to high i mean its 3 75 for a tank a gas. just think. how much prices will drop
