In his Washington Post column today, Michael Gerson noted, as have many others, that Sen. John McCain's was quite the mellow fellow at yesterday's press conference at which the presumptive Republican presidential nominee rebutted charges raised in that now infamous New York Times story about his one-time ties to a Washington lobbyist.
Gerson, President Bush's former speechwriter, writes:
In his remarks, McCain's manner was restrained -- the lava bubbled; the volcano did not blow. Yet he managed to dramatically raise the stakes of his confrontation with the Times by essentially accusing the newspaper of shoddy, inaccurate journalism.
McCain, of course, is known for having quite the temper. Over the years, he has lashed out at Senate colleagues and others. And who can forget the seething performance he gave in 2000 in Virginia Beach when he went after the Religious Right, calling them "agents of intolerance"?
But yesterday, he had the aspect of a once volatile parent who had successfully completed an anger-management course. He said repeatedly that he was "disappointed" by the Times for publishing the story.
It probably helped that McCain and his team had weeks to prepare for what they kenw was coming. As Politico.com reports today, the McCain campaign had a damage-control plan on the shelf and ready to go for when the Times finally published the story.
This is from the Politico story:
Since November, McCain’s campaign had feared the story and its impact. But the delay also allowed McCain’s backers to plot exactly how they would respond. An hour after The Times posted the story at about 7:45 p.m., Hazelbaker issued a scathing response labeling it “a hit and run smear campaign.” Soon after, the campaign sent reporters the extensive response prepared for the Times back in December. After that, the press received excerpts from the appearance of Robert Bennett, the Washington lawyer hired by McCain to try to deal with the newspaper on the story, on Fox’s “Hannity & Colmes.”
At the same time, McCain backers were gathering up favorable reaction and analysis on the cable networks and forwarding it to conservative media voices and other opinion makers on the right.
“We wanted to be fast, forward-leaning and as open and transparent as possible,” said a McCain aide involved in the effort.
So McCain and his campaign had ample time to do a lot of relaxation exercises before yesterday.
Nonetheless, it was impressive to see how low-key McCain kept it. If he was outraged, you'd never be able to tell.
Looks like it's going to take more than a controversial newspaper story with anonymous sources and anecdotes from nearly a decade ago to get the old Navy man's goat, if anything can.

Comments
Don't get me wrong, I think the Republican Party as a whole is an "agent of intolerance" and do not want another one in the White House in my lifetime, but this story is really about the cat that didn't get caught up the tree, something journalists never write.

This is how America would look if concealed weapons were unrestricted:
The violence began around noon when a 37-year-old man police described as a bystander was shot more than a dozen times by suspected gang members as he held the hand of a 2-year-old girl. He later died. The toddler, apparently picked up by a passerby and carried to safety, was not wounded. As the gunmen drove off, witnesses told police, several pedestrians who apparently knew the victim opened fire on the car.

Even if McCain is not guilty of this, didn't he cheat on his first wife with his the woman that would become his second wife? How can she stand there and "trust" him without reservation when she knows that she's been "the other woman?"

Yeah, McCain's damage control spin is to smear the newspaper for merely reporting. So much for Mr. 'Straight Talk'.
The man is a serial liar.

If there's a tangible risk that a guy's going to blow his top over a newspaper story, perhaps he's not really presidential timbre. I'm pretty sure the job might entail the ability to handle adversity with a level head.

It has already been proven that the NYT (more like NY Slime) misquoted (as if we didn't know they do this all the time) one of the main sources. Not only is this bad journalism but unethical.

I think we need to know what meds McCain is on to control that famous temper. He is far too calm.

Your Tribune editorial today got it right about the New York Times publishing an article without attribution and without merit. It was a political smear by a newspaper that has lost whatever flimsly reputation it ever had. I suggest you read your own editorial.

If you want to "get the old Navy man's goat", please show him the quote in 2003 of him saying the Iraq War would be easy, then show him the quote of him in 2006 saying some people tried to misleasd you that the Iraq War would be easy. Ask him to please explain.

The reactionary libs like Mr. Weinerdog (let's use NY Times style for this piece!) are hilarious.
McCain doesn't need to "smear" the Times. It's done a good enough job of that itself with its shoddy reporting.
The Seattle P-I cites "seriouse flaws in its reporting" for the reason it didn't run the piece and the Columbia Journalism Review has five questions it says Bill Keller needs to answer.
Journalists wary of losing more public confidence are rising up as a community against this hit piece. McCain doesn't need to do a thing.

The NYT article was about McCain having bad judgment! Whether it is true on not that he was acting on behalf of lobbyists, it doesnt matter. The lobbyists were flying him around the country to raise money for his campaigns and he developed a friendship with them but he is also in charge on regulating the industry they lobby for ? To me this is bad judgment. How can you be unbiased about something when you are only exposed to one point of view. This is the exact reason the government does and has not address/ed the needs of the people.

How did McCain's people know about this story since November, and what to the Times so long to publish it? Something going on here?
Posted by: Larry A | February 22, 2008 11:45 AM
Wow. Looks like the Trib is joining the NY Times-led effort to ignore journalistic ethics and savage Senator McCain. Really, look at the words you choose to use in your headline: "McCain the volcano fails to erupt over NYT story", like you're disappointed that he responded in a mature and statesmanlike manner. That tells me that you're more interesting in baiting him than anything---that you're more interested in entertainment than enlightenment. Would you treat Senator Obama in a similar manner? I think we all know the answer to that.
Posted by: Tim1979 | February 22, 2008 11:45 AM
Michael Costello, if you judge leaders by their level of fidelity to their first wives, then I trust you have had similar criticisms of President Clinton, President Reagan, MLK, JFK, Ike, FDR, and Thomas Jefferson for that matter. Let's stick to the actual issues, shall we?
Posted by: Tim1979 | February 22, 2008 11:49 AM
So the NYT was "merely reporting"? By your standards then, the Weekly World News is "merely reporting", as long as they have at least one witness to say that he actually saw Angelina Jolie give birth to a half gorilla, half alien monster.

As a conservative and longtime supporter of Senator McCain, I want to thank David in Evanston for such a classy and bipartisan observation. Really, there is so much at stake in November, and the choices between the two nominees will be so clear and significant, that none of us should be sidetracked by red-herring stories relating to the candidates' personal lives. Frankly, I don't care what Senator Obama, Senator Clinton and Senator McCain do in their private lives. I basically want to know two things only---do they have the ability to be an effective leader (I think the answer for all three is clearly "yes"), and in what ideological direction will they steer the ship of state.

Tim, BS is an important issue this election year for Michael Costello.
Bill Keller just can't imagine why his readers would be upset and react negatively to the politically motivated hit job he ran.
"Personally, I was surprised by the volume of the reaction," writes Bill Keller on the Times website. "I was surprised by how lopsided the opinion was against our decision, with readers who described themselves as independents and Democrats joining Republicans in defending Mr. McCain from what they saw as a cheap shot. We knew some readers would disagree with our decision to publish this information. After all, we wrestled with our own doubts on that score."

You really want this crazy old man with his finger on the button?
"F--- you," he shouted at Texas Sen. John Cornyn last year.
"Only an a------ would put together a budget like this," he told the former Budget Committee chairman, Sen. Pete Domenici, in 1999.
"I'm calling you a f------ jerk!"
"F--- you. I know more about this than anyone else in the room," McCain reportedly shouted.
"I decided I didn't want this guy anywhere near a trigger," Domenici told Newsweek in 2000.

This whole story will be about McCain doing favors for lobbyists, not some damn affair that can't be confirmed...yet.
McCain calls himself a "reformer", a "straight-talker" and yet he's still doing "favors" for lobbyists like he did back in the Keating days.
By Michael D. Shear and Jeffrey H. Birnbaum
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, February 22, 2008; A01
"For years, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has railed against lobbyists and the influence of "special interests" in Washington, touting on his campaign Web site his fight against "the 'revolving door' by which lawmakers and other influential officials leave their posts and become lobbyists for the special interests they have aided."
"But when McCain huddled with his closest advisers at his rustic Arizona cabin last weekend to map out his presidential campaign, virtually every one was part of the Washington lobbying culture he has long decried. His campaign manager, Rick Davis, co-founded a lobbying firm whose clients have included Verizon and SBC Telecommunications. His chief political adviser, Charles R. Black Jr., is chairman of one of Washington's lobbying powerhouses, BKSH and Associates, which has represented AT&T, Alcoa, JPMorgan and U.S. Airways".

So, you're telling us that law-abiding citizens with CCW permits would be overcome with the powerful urge to arbitrarily draw their weapons and kill innocent bystanders? Why would that happen?
Are you a nut-job or a criminal, john? Would you go out and commit murder or robbery if I put a pistol in your hand?
No, I didn't think so. So, why do you think that the rest of the law abiding citizens in this country are any different?
Criminals already carry around guns and have shootouts - including shootouts with the police. They get away with it because nobody except the police bother to shoot back.
There would be a lot less crime if criminals were more afraid to operate in the open. Just ask deer hunters how fun hunting would be if the deer returned fire.

McCain's defense is already starting to fall apart. Newsweek has a story up, A Hole in McCain's Defense, and it reports that McCain's testimony in a previous matter contradicts part of his story told yesterday.
A sworn deposition that Sen. John McCain gave in a lawsuit more than five years ago appears to contradict one part of a sweeping denial that his campaign issued this week to rebut a New York Times story about his ties to a Washington lobbyist.
Further, this morning I heard news report reminding listeners that McCain has a lobbyist running his campaign, a lobbyist as political director.
The NYT and WaPo stories are just a starter pistol--for uncovering all the slime in McCain's past.

You “highlight” was about as clear as mud from your post and the article you attached. You made no reference to those who shot at the escaping suspects, and the article had only a single line about them.
Furthermore, the lockdown and manhunt had nothing to do with a neighborhood troubled “with fear and confusion as to who was defending their life and who was taking life.” There was no confusion. The police were looking for two suspects who had participated in the taking of a life. They were not after the pedestrians who returned fire to protect the man who was killed.
So, what’s your point?

Don’t believe one optimistic word from any public figure about the economy or humanity in general. They are all part of the problem. Its like a game of Monopoly. In America, the richest 1% now hold 1/2 OF ALL UNITED STATES WEALTH. Unlike ‘lesser’ estimates, this includes all stocks, bonds, cash, and material assets held by America’s richest 1%. Even that filthy pig Oprah acknowledged that it was at about 50% in 2006. Naturally, she put her own ‘humanitarian’ spin on it. Calling attention to her own ‘good will’. WHAT A DISGUSTING HYPOCRITE SLOB. THE RICHEST 1% HAVE LITERALLY MADE WORLD PROSPERITY ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. Don’t fall for any of their ‘humanitarian’ CRAP. ITS A SHAM. THESE PEOPLE ARE CAUSING THE SAME PROBLEMS THEY PRETEND TO CARE ABOUT. Ask any professor of economics. Money does not grow on trees. The government can’t just print up more on a whim. At any given time, there is a relative limit to the wealth within ANY economy of ANY size. So when too much wealth accumulates at the top, the middle class slip further into debt and the lower class further into poverty. A similar rule applies worldwide. The world’s richest 1% now own over 40% of ALL WORLD WEALTH. This is EVEN AFTER you account for all of this ‘good will’ ‘humanitarian’ BS from celebrities and executives. ITS A SHAM. As they get richer and richer, less wealth is left circulating beneath them. This is the single greatest underlying cause for the current US recession. The middle class can no longer afford to sustain their share of the economy. Their wealth has been gradually transfered to the richest 1%. One way or another, we suffer because of their incredible greed. We are talking about TRILLIONS of dollars. Transfered FROM US TO THEM. Over a period of about 27 years. Thats Reaganomics for you. The wealth does not ‘trickle down’ as we were told it would. It just accumulates at the top. Shrinking the middle class and expanding the lower class. Causing a domino effect of socio-economic problems. But the rich will never stop. They will never settle for a reasonable share of ANYTHING. They will do whatever it takes to get even richer. Leaving even less of the pie for the other 99% of us to share. At the same time, they throw back a few tax deductable crumbs and call themselves ‘humanitarians’. IT CAN’T WORK THIS WAY. Any 'humanitarian' progress made in one area will be lost in another. EVERY SINGLE TIME. IT ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT WORK THIS WAY. This is going to end just like a game of Monopoly. The current US recession will drag on for years and lead into the worst US depression of all time. The richest 1% will live like royalty while the rest of us fight over jobs, food, and gasoline. Crime, poverty, and suicide will skyrocket. So don’t fall for all of this PR CRAP from Hollywood, Pro Sports, and Wall Street PIGS. ITS A SHAM. Remember: They are filthy rich EVEN AFTER their tax deductable contributions. Greedy pigs. Now, we are headed for the worst economic and cultural crisis of all time. SEND A “THANK YOU” NOTE TO YOUR FAVORITE MILLIONAIRE. ITS THEIR FAULT. I’m not discounting other factors like China, sub-prime, or gas prices. But all of those factors combined still pale in comparison to that HUGE transfer of wealth to the rich. Anyway, those other factors are all related and further aggrivated because of GREED. If it weren’t for the OBSCENE distribution of wealth within our country, there never would have been such a market for sub-prime to begin with. Which by the way, was another trick whipped up by greedy bankers and executives. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. The credit industry has been ENDORSED by people like Oprah, Ellen, Dr Phil, and many other celebrities. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. Now, there are commercial ties between nearly every industry and every public figure. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. So don’t fall for their ‘good will’ BS. ITS A LIE. If you fall for it, then you’re a fool. If you see any real difference between the moral character of a celebrity, politician, attorney, or executive, then you’re a fool. WAKE UP PEOPLE. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. The 1% club will always say or do whatever it takes to get as rich as possible. Without the slightest regard for anything or anyone but themselves. Vioxx. Their idea. Sub-prime. Their idea. NAFTA. Their idea. Outsourcing. Their idea. The commercial lobbyist. Their idea. The multi-million dollar lawsuit. Their idea. $200 cell phone bills. Their idea. $200 basketball shoes. Their idea. $30 late fees. Their idea. $30 NSF fees. Their idea. $20 DVDs. Their idea. Subliminal advertising. Their idea. The MASSIVE campaign to turn every American into a brainwashed credit card, pharmaceutical, love-sick, celebrity junkie. Their idea. All of which concentrate the world’s wealth and resources and wreak havok on society. All of which have been CREATED AND ENDORSED by celebrities, athletes, and executives. IT MAKES THEM RICHER. So don’t fall for their ‘ good will’ ‘humanitarian’ BS. ITS A SHAM. NOTHING BUT TAX DEDUCTABLE PR CRAP. Bottom line: The richest 1% will soon tank the largest economy in the world. It will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before. and thats just the beginning. Greed will eventually tank every major economy in the world. Causing millions to suffer and die. Oprah, Angelina, Brad, Bono, and Bill are not part of the solution. They are part of the problem. EXTREME WEALTH HAS MADE WORLD PROSPERITY ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. WITHOUT WORLD PROSPERITY, THERE WILL NEVER BE WORLD PEACE OR ANYTHING EVEN CLOSE. GREED KILLS. IT WILL BE OUR DOWNFALL. Of course, the rich will throw a fit and call me a madman. Of course, their ignorant fans will do the same. You have to expect that. But I speak the truth. If you don’t believe me, then copy this entry and run it by any professor of economics or socio-economics. Then tell a friend. Call the local radio station. Re-post this entry or put it in your own words. Be one of the first to predict the worst economic and cultural crisis of all time and explain its cause. WE ARE IN BIG TROUBLE.
