I personally don't agree with the use of his middle name because there is enough other things, like his record, to attack him with.

However, my understnding is as a boy he went by the name Barry and then as he entered manhood starting using his Barack because he was proud of his roots. Fair enough. Isn't part of his roots his middle name, so why he is ashamed of it. After all, he had the middle name long before Saddam was creating havoc in the Middle East.

Finally, I believe John McCain was born in 1935. What if he was given the middle name Adolph? Hitler wasn't just a small despot in Europe. How much do you think the left and probably the MSM would be making sure every American knew that fact?

I find it interesting that though many might fear the name Hussein (as in now deceased Saddam), if I remember correctly, wasn't our biggest and most respected US ally in the MidEast also named Hussein, as in King Hussein of Jordan..? For 7 yeard I've been hearing liberal commentators use the name "Dubya" to disparage George W. Bush (the "no W" stickers and every classless term they can use). I find it very ironic that the two leading canditates for the democrat party have the combined middle names of "Rodham Hussien". Suddenly, when the shoe is on the other foot, we should be sensitive? If someone does not want to be known by their middle name Hussein, then they could change it to something like Christopher. Every place you go, you are recognized by credit card companies, SSN, banks, government offices, etc, by your full-name your First, Last and yes, your middle name. Often when people convert to another religion, they do change their old religious name for a new one more in keeping with who they are.

This past Feb 25th the Democratic National Committee filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission against John McCain. Why? In the words of DNC Chair Howard Dean:

We want John McCain to obey the law with his own name on it.

This afternoon Dean and officials at the DNC held a conference call in which they spelled out why they will file a complaint with the FEC against McCain. The background is that in December and January, McCain was broke and had to tap in to a massive amount of lobbyist money to keep his campaign afloat. Doing so put him in danger of exceeding the spending limits attached to participation in the federal matching funds program, in which an eligible candidate can receive monies voluntarily contributed by taxpayers to match low-donor campaign contributions in exchange for abiding by spending limits.

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani had opted out of the federal matching funds program. John Edwards and several other candidate had opted in, but since there was insufficient money in the fund, they had to secure a loan against the money they were certified to receive.

McCain publicly declared that he would accept the matching funds (and therefore abide by the spending limits). But since he was broke, he had to go to a bank and secure a loan under dubious conditions. Since he appears to have secured the loan by using his eligibility to accept the federal matching funds, it seems fairly clear that he is committed to the federal matching funds system.

The DNC's complaint will allege the following. Fist, that McCain used his status as a candidate operating under the federal matching fund program to gain access on state ballots without having to spend any money to submit signatures. From the DNC's press release:

The McCain campaign has incorrectly stated that McCain is doing what Dean did when he withdrew from public financing in his presidential bid, but they have the facts wrong. Dean did not use the promise of matching funds as collateral for a loan. Dean withdrew before the FEC determined eligibility for funds, unlike McCain. And he spent millions of dollars to get his name on the ballot after withdrawing, unlike McCain, who had free ballot access in many states because he pledged to accept matching funds.

That is a material gain from pledging to accept the matching funds. Another material gain from pledging to accept the matching funds is the ability to use his eligibility as collateral, which he did to secure his loan.

Finally, by receiving these material benefits from his pledge to enter the matching funds system, he is bound to abide by the spending limits. The matching funds program requires one to spend no more than approximately $57 million dollars for the entire campaign up until he officially becomes the nominee in September. Through January, he had already spent over $46 million.

If you follow the implications, since he entered the federal matching funds program, John McCain is now essentially at the spending limit, and is legally prohibited from spending any more money until September. To spend more money would be to break federal law.

That law, by the way, is sometimes named after its Senate sponsors:
McCain-Feingold.

I was very disturbed what I heard tonight on Hannity and Colmes about Obama's association with the weather underground.

I had mentioned this group to talk show host Stephanie Miller on her radio show a few days ago.

Well to say the least, they all laughed at me and said that Obama's only association with this radical group was, that this group had donated $200.00 TO HIS CAMPAIGN.

Well low and behold, Sean Hannity was correct.

When I got to that page I scrolled down to the 3rd site: Stop the ACLU "Blog Archives" Obama's terrorist friends....and to say the least I was shocked at what I saw and the write-up on his connections with this radical underground group that was responsible for bombings in our country in the 1960's.

"Ask Jack Abramoff if I'm an insider in Washington," McCain often contends. "You'd probably have to go during visiting hours in the prison, and he'll tell you and his lobbyist cronies of the change I made there."

But how much change did McCain actually effect? And is he all that removed from Washington's special interests?

A review of campaign finance filings shows that the Arizona Republican has accepted more than $100,000 in donations from employees of Greenberg Traurig, the very firm where Abramoff once reigned.

Those donations include several thousand dollars from registered lobbyists who represent, or have represented, businesses such as NewsCorp, Rupert Murdoch's media empire; Spi Spirits, a Cyprus based company that has fought with the Russian government for the rights to the Stolichnaya vodka brand name;

El Paso Corp, a major energy company; General Motors; and the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition, a group of businesses and trade associations "concerned" about the shortage of lesser skilled and unskilled labor.

All told, McCain has received more than $400,000 from lobbying firms, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

And among his major fundraisers ("bundlers") 59 have been identified as lobbyists by the non-profit organization Public Citizen.

MCCAIN IGNORED A SAM WARNING IN VIETNAM

From a recent copy of Newsweek magazine, I learned an interesting fact about McCain.

When he got shot down over North Vietnam, he had sufficient warning that a SAM was tracking him to jink and avoid the missile.

Instead, in a fit of rage or stupidity or just plain idiotic stubbornness, McCain stayed on course, kept his eye on the target, and got his pretty little airplane blown all to smithereens.

He was shot down, captured, and endured five years in a North Vietnamese prison because he was unwilling to LISTEN TO A SAM WARNING AND TAKE PREVENTIVE ACTION!

This is not the kind of person we need as President. This is the kind of 'leader' that would 'lead' the United States right over the brink of disaster.

It is absolutely deplorable to use his middle name as a fear tactic. However, for his wife to say that he won the senate election despite that is undeniably misleading. He ran virtually unopposed in Illinois. (his rivals campaign imploded on its own and then in the 24th hour through in the unelectable Alan Keyes). Just thought it should be called as it is.

Like all Americans, Obama should have the option of going by his middle name, middle initial or only his first and last names. It doesn't matter what a person's middle name is; what matters is the content of the person's character. Most parents give their children their names out of Love. Assuming that Obama's mother and father named him in this spirit, he should wear his middle name with pride. We, as Americans, should accept Barack Hussein Obama's name with the same pride.

How people feel about him has nothing to do with any part of his name. It has to do with remarks like this:

Personally, I see no problem whatsoever with Obama's full name - it is part of who he is. What I object to is the fact that it is being used solely for the 'fear factor' by ignorant people to influence other people - on the basis that the candidate thinks most people out there are equally as ignorant. Obama and his wife cry foul too many times. They accuse others of making racist comments but have no problems associating with groups that are racist. Michelle Obama's college thesis reflects racist feelings. When American citizens question Obama's qualifications, statements, or associations, he and his followers conveniently accuse people of racism. We still have First Amendment rights in the United States. Obama is only a politician. He is no more special than any other American citizen. We as citizens have a right to question any politician. George Bush came to office in 2001 promising a new era of integrity, civility and "compassionate conservatism," an era of humble American foreign policy, and a bi-partisan approach to government.

What did we actually get?

Once in office, this chameleon president almost immediately set out to embroil the country in a major war in the Middle East against the nation of Iraq. The game plan was laid out at the president’s first National Security Council meeting, attended by Vice President Dick Cheney (the man holding Bush’s controller), Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleezza Rice, and Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neal (who later spilled the beans about the session).

Bush also famously ignored all warnings about the imminent attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. How much he and the rest of the administration knew about that attack in advance, or whether elements within the administration may have even helped it along, remains the subject of considerable interest and investigation and may never be answered, but it is clear that there were ample warnings about it, and he did nothing—even rudely blowing off a briefer who tried to alert him to the danger. Moreover, it is known that Israeli Mossad agents (who we know have close ties to both the US intelligence apparatus and to the Neocons who infest the Bush White House) did indeed have advance knowledge, and were set up across New York Harbor with a video camera to tape the attack on the Twin Towers (they were subsequently arrested by New Jersey police, only to be later released and sent back to Israel, through intercession by the US government). As well, we know that unidentified people made a killing by placing negative bets, called "puts," on the stocks, several days before 9-11, of the two airlines that were hijacked, American and United, and of two investment banks that would be seriously hurt by the building collapses, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley. (The puts were placed through an investment bank, Alex Brown, which until a year earlier had been headed by a man who moved over to become the number three person in the CIA.) It’s hard to escape the conclusion that the Bush/Cheney administration, at a minimum, wanted an attack on American soil, and a national disaster that would put the country on a war footing.

Certainly instead of rallying the public and defending the nation’s democratic traditions and its Constitution, Bush and his handlers after 9-11 immediately set in motion a concerted scare campaign to undermine both. While urging the public to buy sheets of plastic and duct tape to construct "safe rooms" in their homes, they rammed through Congress a deceitfully named measure, the so-called Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (USA PATRIOT Act), which effectively undermined most of the articles of the Bill of Rights (and which appeared, suspiciously, fully drawn up in bill form, only days after the attacks).

At the same time, the president, only one week after the attacks, obtained an Authorization for Use of Military Force for a military attack on the Taliban government in Afghanistan and on Al Qaeda forces in that country, which he subsequently interpreted broadly as an authorization for a global "war" on terror which he then claimed made him effectively a dictator with absolute power both at home and abroad (the so-called "unitary executive" theory). Under this claim of absolute power as commander in chief in time of war, Bush went on to order the use of torture against captives, foreign and domestic, including US citizens, to strip even US citizens of the right of habeas corpus—that is, the right to have their arrest and detention brought before a federal court—and to establish secret torture centers around the globe and on military installations in Iraq, Afghanistan and at Guantanamo Bay on the island of Cuba.

As well, even before the 9-11 attacks, the president began a sweeping program of electronic spying, run through the super-secret National Security Agency, on Americans’ telephone and internet activities. It was and remains a program that deliberately avoids seeking warrants and court approval even by the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court—a body that has only rejected some five requests for warrants out of hundreds of thousands sought since its establishment in 1978.

Finally, in a perhaps fatal undermining of the Constitution, the president after 9-11 began a practice of simply refusing to enact or obey laws passed by the Congress, effectively rendering the legislative branch an impotent debating club.

Not content to simply explode or dismantle the legal foundations of the American government and rule of law, Bush and his handlers also went about systematically destroying the country’s basic institutions and even its economy.

The education system was fatally ensnared in a test-driven system called "No Child Left Behind," which has in short order dumbed down public education to an extent shocking even to this already anti-intellectual society, with many schools simply giving up the teaching of art, literature or history, in order to focus desperately on math and reading in order that their students would do well enough on standardized tests to keep the schools from losing their funding.

The dollar has been cast adrift to become the new Lira as the government has gone on an unprecedented borrowing spree to fund endless war and ever-larger military budgets, while erasing the taxes on the wealthy, the super-rich, and corporations. Banks were given free rein to enter into all manner of risky ventures, leading to the current collapse in credit. Corporations were encouraged to ship their production and jobs overseas. Homeowners were encouraged to spend, spend, spend and to mortgage their homes to the hilt and then some. Towns, cities and pension funds were encouraged to invest in fantastic "structured" products that were actually towering card houses. Domestic car manufacturers were encouraged to build every larger, ever more voraciously gas-guzzling vehicles, pumping out ever larger quantities of carbon into the already overstressed atmosphere.

The nation’s infrastructure—its roads, dams, bridges, levies, airports, veterans hospitals etc.--were left to decay, with predictable results, the most dramatic of which was the loss of an entire city, New Orleans, to a routine Category 3 hurricane (after which, the president did nothing to rescue the survivors or fund a recovery).

Surveying at the appalling wreckage left after eight years of the Bush administration, it is hard to recognize the country that he started out with in 2001. A once proud nation—one that only a few years ago was admired around the world and that now is viewed as a pariah and a rogue state—today trembles before a handful of turbaned fanatics holed up in caves in the Hindu Kush, its trillion-dollar high-tech military colossus fought to a standstill in Iraq and Afghanistan by a few thousand brave men and women armed with RPGs, antique AK-47s and home-made roadside bombs. A nation that once was the envy of the world for its free society now has scientists afraid to report their findings, university professors afraid to support outspoken colleagues, members of Congress afraid to defend their Constitution, citizens afraid of their neighbors, journalists afraid of government criticism, lawyers afraid to defend clients...

Having been born and raised in Chicago, and having been a police officer for 20+ years, my main concern is domestic crime. Obama did NOTHING to stem the continued gang violence in Chicago while an Illinois state senator. A few years ago, at a memorial service for two girls killed within a week by gang gunfire, Obama said that the problem was that the murdering thugs did not get enough "love". The name Hussein is used to instill a sense of uneasiness and doubt. It is very different than using Sidney, for instance.

Obama will require scrutiny by the American people to resolve any suspicions regarding his Islamic heritage. The two key men in his life appear to be substantially grounded in Islam and we cannot see his Christian religious commitment in terms other than a convenient demographic for his political aspirations. The concept that a man might seek to distance himself from his own middle name or fail to publicly embrace it because it could be a political liability suggests there is something, perhaps, to hide?

Now half of the 9.2 trillion is held by the Government in the form of IOU's in the SS "lockbox", not cash. Now the government will tell you that it holds bonds that cover the debt, which is true, but guess who issued the bonds, that's right; the government. Now where will the government get the money to repay these bonds, that's right again; the taxpayer.

Who holds the rest of our debt; oversea investors. Now with the dollar at all time lows, precious metals (gold, silver and platinum) at all time highs and a trade deficit near record highs, I see in the near future, these investors looking elsewhere to invest in safer markets. Would you buy bonds from someone who held this kind of debt? And when that happens, the good ol' US of A will be bankrupt. It will be like Germany after WW1, when the German Mark became worthless. One million Marks at that time wouldn't buy you a loaf of bread, but a cart of firewood did.

With all the new social programs that Obama plans to enact, at the cost of hundreds and hundreds of billions more, I can see the crises happening before 2012.

You continue to bring up the fact that McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone. What you fail to mention is that he was born on a US Military base because his faimly was stationed there. You may not know this, but just because something is printed in the New York Times doesn't make it fact. Military bases are considered sovereign U.S. soil and nowhere in the Constitution does it say that one must be born in the continental US to be president. It merely says natural born citizen. If McCain is not eligible to run then we might as well exclude anyone born outside of the original 13 colonies since those were the only states in the union when the Constitution was drafted in 1787, thus only people born in those states are eligible.

Facts are facts. If his middle name is a liability, that isn't the Republicans' fault. Instead of trying to ban its use, he should be much more fixed on where he really stands in terms of religion and patriotism. Up until now, he's been a moving target in these areas, and that's why the middle name will hurt him.

People want to know in the end what kind of guy this is who would run the world's largest super power, and to date, he's been evasive on the key measures - religion and patriotism. Do we really want a "fundamental change" in the way our President governs? I want the President to follow the rules laid out in the Constitution - anything else and I think we should all be very afraid.

What is wrong with using her husband's middle name. If he is that ashamed of his middle name, why did he never have it legally changed?

Could it be, rather, that he is actually very proud of his muslim, arabic middle name but just doesn't want the voters to know that, given tensions with the muslim world.

Under Muslim law, children born of a muslim father are considered muslim at birth. Has he ever renounced his faith? I don't think he has.

Unless I am mistaken, it was Clinton's campaign that made the reference to the middle name and released the picture dressed in traditional Muslin wardrobe in Africa.

While Obama may not as yet laid out a concrete plan for everything he will change in Washington (has Clinton or McCain?!?!), he is the only candidate running who has a chance in hell to start to moderate our dangerously partisan government and restore some of our lost international stature and national pride that 20 years of Bush-Clinton has decimated.

The younger generation of voters who are truly motivated for the first time in a very long time in this election realize that our very future is in serious jeopardy because of the polarization of our two ruling parties. As the growing problems of rising energy costs, education costs and stagnant wages and job loss hear as well as global problems of climate change and overpopulation continue to be ignored in Washington while Republicans and Democrats shout names at each other across the aisle and Bush and Chaney bankrupt our great grandchildren to fill the coffers of their masters (Haliburton and Blackwater). Obama alone cannot even begin to fix everything wrong with our country but he will, I believe start a tidal wave of change in Washington and bring a whole new group of voters into the mix that the old guard in Washington should be very afraid of.

I think it speaks volumes that the only thing the Republican's can find on Obama is his name.

You continue to bring up the fact that McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone. What you fail to mention is that he was born on a US Military base because his faimly was stationed there. You may not know this, but just because something is printed in the New York Times doesn't make it fact. Military bases are considered sovereign U.S. soil and nowhere in the Constitution does it say that one must be born in the continental US to be president. It merely says natural born citizen. If McCain is not eligible to run then we might as well exclude anyone born outside of the original 13 colonies since those were the only states in the union when the Constitution was drafted in 1787, thus only people born in those states are eligible.

How will electing an apostate as President effect this nation’s relationships with Muslim nations? Do the American people have the right to know about this before the election? Voting for Obama is a TRAP!

I'm Muslim, and frankly I am sick of the "history" that Obama has created for himself. If you view it from a strictly Islamic viewpoint, his background is really not respectable at all nor one that gives me a good feeling in and of itself about him. It's not his fault how he was raised but still he has to be very careful with how he portrays himself or it will come back to haunt him from non-Muslims and Muslims alike.

We don't really know whether his mother and father had a civil marriage, we don't even know whether they went through an Islamic marriage ceremony. Even if we did the latter, the fact that his mother was an atheist would have made the marriage completely invalid. Without a valid Islamic marriage between the two, the son is only to be considered the child of the mother, not of the father. He should never have been named after his father and instead been given his mother's name. Also, her second marriage to his "stepfather" would have been considered invalid because of her atheism, making his sister equally illegitimate.

So we have an atheist mother who shacked up with two Muslim men without the benefit of a real Islamic marriage. This is what scares me, because he is touting his background as somehow knowledgeable and accessible to different cultures but it is an insult to any God-fearing Muslim that he tours his background as something positive because when you actually analyze it it isn't. It's just shallow rhetoric.

We need to be having adult conversations to choose the best president we can. This next election could be the "big one." First, McCain isn't just Bush reheated. McCain is a moderate Republican. And although Bill Clinton talked very liberal, he ACTED like a moderate. Extremism is not healthy on either side. The moderates are the ones who have been our most successful presidents. Obama is WAY to liberal, as is Hillary. That may appeal to you, but you have to ask yourself, why? I see the downfall of extreme conservatism. Can't you see the downfall of extreme liberalism? Obama is a showman. He is very articulate and says what you want to hear but he never says how he is going to accomplish things. He doesn't do it in his speeches, and his record doesn't show he authored any legislation to improve things. Appearing presidential, doesn't make you a president. As far as his name, Hussein, that is the name of Muhammad's grandson and is a figure revered among the Sunnis. Obama was raised by Muslims. He prayed Muslim prayers, and he was influenced by Muslim ideology. Is that a threat? Maybe not in the short term, but look at the long term repercussions: Islamic emmigration to the US will grow. That is a given. The more Muslims in the US, the more pressure will come to bear on the "freedoms" that liberals hold so dear. Not only is his religious background a threat, but his extreme liberal ideology is a threat too. This country cannot afford to finance the lives of the perpetually oppressed/poor. Put enough straw on a camel and eventually, it will break his back. I am not a fan of McCains, but I think Obama is dangerous to our future, and I believe Hillary is as well. I would be happy to put a Democrat in the Whitehouse if it is the right one. Keep an open mind and stop being so zealous. Stop creating a false image of people. Certainly, Obama isn't perfect, is he? And certainly, McCain and the rest of the republican party aren't all fatally flawed. Open your eyes and be objective

I think Barry should emphasize that his father was a no-account who was legally marred to someone else when he committed bigamy by "marrying" Barry's mother in the US. Then he could say that his middle name was created by this bigamist of a father, and he can't help that it's his middle name. I think he should change it to Barack Fitzgerald Obama.

How is it a smear to call a man by his given name? If he doesn't like his name, he can have it changed legally. Barak Obama is just as odd and Muslim sounding as adding in the middle name Hussein. At least it's accurate, unlike the many stupid emails i get saying he is Muslim, and his middle name is Muhammed.

Apparently Michelle Obama has determined that she can read the minds of the American people. Like when we hear the name "Hussein" and it makes us afraid. She has this extrordinary ability you see. It is called profiling -in other words she prejudges a person or group because she "knows how these people think". It may or may not be racial profiling (although I suspect it is), but it is profiling none the less. This is the type of hypocrisy and condescension we can expect from a person who is ashamed of the country she so much wants to govern along with her husband. If she has such a low opinion of us she should find a more promising place to live. She would do better governing savages.
