For a guy who promises not to “overstay his welcome’’ in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, Mike Huckabee was having a hard time leaving the stage last night.
The former Arkansas governor’s appearance in the “Weekend Update’’ news segment of NBC’s Saturday Night Live ended with repeated and ignored cues for his exit, stage right.
Huckabee also admitted to some confusion about the mathematical impossibility of winning his party’s nomination.
“I’m not a math guy,’’ Huckabee said. “I’m more of a miracle guy. So at this point, I’m gonna focus on the miracle part.’’
Actually, this is what Huckabee really says on the campaign trail as well – the ordained Baptist minister “didn’t major in math,’’ he said here in Washington once. “I majored in miracles.’’
(NBC photo of SNL's Seth Meyers and Arkansas' Mike Huckabee)
Yet, on the SNL set, Huckabee was having a little fun with a question which many in his party are asking about his improbable campaign against Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the runaway frontrunner in the GOP's delegate chase: When is he planning to wrap it up?
"Mike Huckabee does not overstay his welcome,’’ he told host Seth Meyers. “When it's time for me to go, I'll know. And I'll exit out with class and grace."
Then he sat there.
Staying at the Update desk despite Meyers’ attempts to show him the door.
SNL, with a tradition of political humor – and star political guests and guest-hosts – has been on the sidelines for nearly four months due to the strike of the Writers Guild of America.
Much has changed in that time: The butts of many SNL jokes are gone from the race: Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney alike.
The last fresh episode of SNL, in early November, featured Sen. Barack Obama playing himself at a Halloween party hosted by Hillary and Bill Clinton. McCain served as a host in 2002.

Ummmm, did anybody actually see the episode? You realize it was a sketch and that Huckabee was joking, right? Everything I've read this morning makes it sound like he, literally, didn't realize it was time to leave. Are you people stupid, or what?
Posted by: Joe Dusek | February 24, 2008 9:00 AM
Maybe that was the idea of the skit...he is being asked to leave and he doesn't. Maybe SNL writers didn't script it...perhaps Mr. Huckabee decided to improvise..and if he did......Perfecto!
Posted by: oh | February 24, 2008 9:09 AM
Are you so stupid that you did not see this was part of the gag? What kind of reporting is this? Give credit to the man to participate in the comedy, even for those of you who fail to understand that it was part of the entertainment.
Sheesh!

Joe "Everything I've read this morning makes it sound like he, literally, didn't realize it was time to leave."
That't the point, if anyone is stupid Joe, it is Huckabee cause he really doesn't realize when it is time to leave. And he admits he is poor at math, our POTUS should at least kmow simple math basics. :)

I saw SNL, and it was all scripted comedy. It showed that Huchabee has a sense of humor. He is not my candidate, but it made him likeable.
This write-up shows no hint of realization that it was a comedy skit, which is irresponsible reporting.

Does the last voter in S. Dakota on June 3rd not have a right to choose between AT LEAST 2 candidates?
Why do many not welcome voter input when Americans already have a problem with voter apathy?
I am very pleased that Gov. Mike Huckabee does not listen to Mark Silva or ANY other press or pundit when it comes to EVERY American having the right to CHOOSE.

I'm a liberal Dem, but I really enjoyed this clever skit. Huckabee deserves credit for participating in a bit of smart, self-deprecating humor. I think Mark Silva may be having some fun of his own reporting this as "news".
He is, after all, just telling us what happened. That's what a reporter does.
Everyone got it. Hilarious.

Please tell me that people are intelligent enough to know that the end leg of the skit was part of the gag. He was SUPPOSED to stay there to make the point that people think that he has overstayed his welcome. Please tell me that people are not this dense to actually think that Huckabee didn't know that it was time to exit.
If you actually thought that portion was real, then I am convinced that people will want to see whatever they want to see and define it the way they want to define it - no matter what reality is.
I can't believe that some people missed the whole point of the gag!
Posted by: Phoebe | February 24, 2008 9:40 AM
Well, it beats a front page article in the NYT which WAS serious, accusing John McCain of sexual and other moral pecadilloes through innuendo and "anonymous" sources. This is at least funny on two counts: that the Trib's news editor thought this was serious news, and on the second, that (as others have noted) Huckabee was in a bloody SKIT on SNL, a COMEDY show. Get it? D'oh!
Posted by: Randy S. | February 24, 2008 9:41 AM
Mike Huckabee is a decent and honest man, we have not heard the last of him. For that I am thankful. It seems as though a great many Americans have forgotten their American history, where we came from and how we got where we are today. A great country with a big heart and always with both arms outstretched to help any country in their hour of need, be they friend or foe.
Posted by: Paul Jaeger | February 24, 2008 9:41 AM
How unfortunate that this reporter still does not "get" Mike Huckabee's humor. Governor Huckabee was obviously satirizing himself as viewed through the lens of the media -- a subset of our populace that has been unwilling, and unable, to see the depth and breadth of this most unconventional candidate and talented leader. Mr. Huckabee, and we, deserve more insightful reporting.

Regardless of whether you think it was telling or you are an reactionary zealot like Rey Flores, the point is the article reported comedy as fact and self-mockery as an actual action. I do congratulate the Sun on recognizing that Barack Obama was last on the show months ago, the white guy playing him in the first skit last night was not the actual candidate.
Posted by: B-Matt | February 24, 2008 9:51 AM
How irresponsable of this reporter to write this article as if it was real. It was all scripted and Mike H is a great sport that even laughs a himself. I respect him for fighting against the media machinery that normally tries to discredit him.

You people have got to be kidding -- how could anyone read any account of a SNL skit as anything but intentional humor? Yikes.
Posted by: Mark Silva | February 24, 2008 10:11 AM
I know it' s been said already and will be said again, but I am honestly STUNNED that you
apparently didn't "get" that Huckabee not leaving the stage was part of the SCRIPTED joke. Yet I've read this post a few times over, and I'm pretty certain you did not -- that you honestly thought it was genuine, unscripted awkwardness and rudeness on Huckabee's part.
I don't know how you could have actually seen the skit and come away thinking it was anything but intentional on the part of the writers. It was FUNNY. Mike Huckabee doesn't know when to leave ... ever ... THAT was the joke. Get it?? I guess maybe (maybe?!) the writers didn't plan it and it was, as another commenter suggested, improvised by him. I don't think so -- it's hard to imagine they would have missed such an obvious opportunity to keep the joke going. But even if that was the case, that's still FUNNY, completely in the spirit of SNL and the skit itself. If that is how it went down, kudos to Huckabee.
Either way, Mark Silva's interpretation was flat-out, embarrassingly wrong. And then the editors made this absurd MISunderstanding the front page headline in the Sunday edition?! Wow. Get a clue, you guys --- and next time do a little 5-minute YouTube research before you jump all over a too-good-to-be-true story. You really messed up.

Posted by: getafreakinclue | February 24, 2008 10:14 AM
It ceases to amaze me that a newsreporter can deliberately skew the intent about even a humorous, harmless skit on SNL...so that it appeared like it was totally serious! How stupid do you think we are, Mr. Silva? And, furthermore, the fact remains that if McCain doesn't get the needed 1191,then the Republican candidate will be decided at the convention. THAT should be your news! GO HUCKABEE!!!
Posted by: Europeantraveler | February 24, 2008 10:20 AM

Posted by: timm | February 24, 2008 10:21 AM
Of course, Mike Huckabee's lingering after cues to leave was a part of the act. Anyone who watches will know that. Those who try to make it seem otherwise are the stupid ones for not being able to "catch on" to a simple joke.
Posted by: Anne | February 24, 2008 10:25 AM
I don't know what's more humorous, the SNL skit or the people who thought it was serious.
Posted by: fl06 | February 24, 2008 10:28 AM
Mark, your comment is somewhat disingenuous. Read the headline on the home page, then link to your post and reread it. Too much non-satirical commentary diluted the effort at straight-faced, "Onion"-style satire it sounds like you may have been aiming for. Yet it may have worked had it not been for the home page headline. The very fact that someone (not you, I'm assuming) made the decision to make your blog post the LEAD POLITICAL STORY implies that it is being understood and treated as serious news. Keep in mind that pretty much everyone who linked to your post was coming off of this headline. Follow that path yourself, from a reader's perspective, and surely you will understand the confusion here.
Posted by: SPL | February 24, 2008 10:31 AM
Huckabee is NOT matematically eliminated !!
He CAN theoretically STILL WIN. How ? This is how. If McCain doesn't pass the threshold, Huckabee gets Ron Paul and some of Romney's delegates to vote for him at the convention.
Romney's delegates are NOT sworn to support McCain.
It IS possible STILL.

That's the guy I want for president. One who doesn't need to "believe in math", but to "believe in miracles"! If he was actually a prophet, maybe, but I haven't seen Huckucleberry perform any miracles lately!
The joke was the fact this guy was even on SNL in the first place! He should go back to his hick state and continue preaching, since that is what he does best!

i can't believe that every news outlet has managed to make something out of nothing. clearly none of them actually watched the skit, or have a sense of humor, because that is the only explanation for not understanding that it was a part of the skit. it astounds me that they believe a presidential candidate is so dense to miss all of the "cues" to leave the set.
and to put his "blunder" on the front page...shame on you. i look forward to seeing multiple retractions in the week to come.

The Huckster is the only person in this race who has a sense of humor. Soon as he drops out is when I tune out, as there is very little difference between the two parties or their leading candidates.
And, he's not as mathematically as Mr. Silva is "humoristically" challenged.

The reporting on this across the country--especially on CNN--doesn't seem to make it clear that the reporters are aware that Hucakbee was "in on the joke" even if they were. I guess satire is hard to report on. MSNBC titled their story "Hucabee In On the Joke at SNL." CNN's really comes off that they don't understand Huckabee was in on the joke. This is somewhere in-between.

Props to you Huckabee!!!And as far as the extreme conservatives saying Obama is anti-American- I heard the man speak last night in Cleveland and I assure you he is NOT anti-American, he just has some different ideas on what he thinks will be best for all of us. Are you people kidding? Oh, I guess not, because you clearly don't have a sense of humor. SNL does this thing called SKETCH COMEDY, where the WRITE JOKES and PERFORM THEM on TV. Mike Huckabee was just saying his lines. Apparently he's such a good actor that he had most of you fooled into thinking he actually was overstaying his welcome. C'mon people. If even Mike Huckabee has a sense of humor, you all have no excuse.

What a TRIBulation. How can so many errors in judgment make it to page one? Added to the already-mentioned newsworthiness issues and Silva’s implication that the sketch was neither scripted nor intended as self deprecating humor – what about Silva’s use the word “admission” in paragraph three? C’mon! Is it really possible to make an admission while ACTING? This is irresponsible reporting, at best.

The Trib certainly has good company in treating entertainment stories as news. (As we'll see on Monday as the "Oscars" make their self-congratulatory annual splash.)

I'm surprised that you have no understanding of scripted live comedy, Mr. Silva. Huckabee was joking. He and SNL writer Seth Meyers worked out the idea for this skit last week. the miracle jokes, the failure to leave the stage: JOKES. Huckabee knows his true chances of winning the nomination are incredibly high--perhaps not before the convention, but certainly through a brokered convention which will most likely happen--and yet he is still easy-going enough to poke fun at himself. He's a real guy, let's face it. A real "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" guy. And this independent thinks he's brilliant.

This is typical conservative baloney and name-calling. It ignores that the two Democrats are still in the race, proving that someone wants them. It resorts to the usual conservative name-calling when it comes to liberals. It once again blames the media where there is nothing to blame. It says more about conservative blather and victimhood than about liberals.

He's the ONLY candidate for president of this nation. VOTE FOR HIM.

Silva is a serious writer, so why in the world did he miss this one? It was an obvious spoof and the newspaper needs to immediately pull this article from it's website and then wipe the egg off of their face. By the way, any serious person or poster wouldn't engage in calling an entire state a "Hick State". That type of stereotyping is normally reserved for biggits.

BLAME IT ON DEWEY:
So many of the media got this wrong that it means either Huckabee is that good of an actor or that those in error were so betrayed by their bias against Evangelicals. I'm presuming it is the latter, though Huckabee did do a great job in the spoof. How shameful for the press to get this wrong, and how humiliating for the editorial groups reponsible for the gaffe.

ajarizona: Mitt Romney is never going to be President of the United States. EIGHTY SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS, and he still had a pathetic showing. It won't happen.
Posted by: GoMike | February 24, 2008 3:24 PM
The problem with these comments about being mathematically challenged is that most of the people making this argument are actually clueless. You've listened to Karl Rove and the other pundits a little too long. Mike Huckabee does not have to win 1,191 delegates to win the nomination. He can force a brokered convention by preventing McCain from getting the 1,191 that he needs. But apparently no one associated with the GOP is willing to make any kind of statement like that in public because they don't want a brokered convention, no matter what the voters want. Let everyone vote (supposedly the GOP doesn't influence the primary process, but I guess that's gone by the way side) and then let the chips fall where they may.
This was just a humorous skit where the Gov. made fun of himself and injected some humor into current events. Doesn't SNL supposedly do that every week?! You guys need to get a life and laugh a little bit.
Posted by: Hulen B | February 24, 2008 3:26 PM
Hey, Mark Silva... Do you need some help getting that hook, line and sinker out of your mouth? Satire is one of Governor Huckabee's favorite kinds of humor, and he's doing this so that libs and cons who take themselves too seriously might look at something TOGETHER and enjoy it!!! I'm sure that Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" would have you yelling and screaming as well. But, hey... It's okay. You're forgiven. You can go now.

Clyde, EXACTLY WHEN was he "supposed" to? And under who's orders?
And then you can answer this question: What is so wrong with allowing the LAST voter in S.D. having a choice between Sen. McCain and Gov. Huckabee also?

Why is this story still posted on Tribune's website.
It comes off as a completely inaccurate portrayal of the comedy skit on SNL last night.
Did Silva understand the whole "staying on stage too long" was a gag OR was his writing this morning so poor that he didn't explain that part clear enough?
Posted by: J. Locke | February 24, 2008 4:40 PM
Mr. Silva, this "story" is embarrassing!
Huck's overstaying his interview was the joke! If you and the Associated Press and CNN, and MSNBC could not get it, you must either be daft/dense or irredeemably biased! Very sad indeed!
Thanks to Youtube, we can see things for ourselves.
You have just made me a media skeptic!
Posted by: Sid | February 24, 2008 5:08 PM
This whole thing is weird, from the reporter's seeming obtuseness to the many commenters who perceive the Tribune as being part of the LIBERAL media!
Posted by: Steve Newton | February 24, 2008 5:35 PM
I also read somewhere else that the whole skit was actually Huckabee's idea.
Posted by: Kenny | February 24, 2008 5:52 PM
I want silva's job...how is this guy a writer for the tribune seriously...this was the worst article ever written and we are now all dumber for reading it...
Posted by: jake | February 24, 2008 6:08 PM
Silva got it. We all got it. Funny, haha. The point is why did it take Mike Huckabee so long to get it. Come to think of it, I haven't seen TAX HIKE Mike withdraw from the republican race for president yet. The joke is on anyone who buys into this guys funny preacher routine. He's the so called nice guy who sat on his hands while Mitt Romney explained his faith. Never did TAX HIKE Mike take the moral High ground. Romney of course didn't exactly run a nice guy campaign either but...at least he knew when to leave. Mike Huckabee is not even REMOTELY presidential material. Not in word. Not in deed.
I'm sick of his former fat guy face polluting my TV every a.m. on Morning Joe. Mike the show is over. Go back to scamming brainwashed Kool-Aid swizzling lemmings. Your flock so to speak. The rest of us are on to you.
As Frank Zappa once said "Shut Up And Play Your Guitar!"

I am a liberal and I found the skit refreshingly funny (a oddity for SNL of late)...
My feeling is while I don't agree on the majority of his views, it was nice seeing someone of the conservative party branch out a little. I will never vote for him, but I aprreciate the fact that he was willing to make himself the butt of a joke.
The thing that does the most damage to the conservative/republican party are posters like this:
"Many Americans with a moral conscience are ignored by the liberal media.
We know that Shrillary &
anti-America NObama have certainly overstayed their welcome."-ray flores

Having both a quick mind and humility are Huck's strengths, not Silva's.

Mark Silva is the joke here. It is SO OBVIOUS that this is an attempt to demean Huckabee under the guise of journalism. The AP did the same thing, too. GET REAL!
You all need to change your paper's name to the Baltimore Spun. Stop editorializing -- it is really transparent. But if you didn't get the joke, you probably won't get that either.
Posted by: Dave Plemmons | February 24, 2008 7:13 PM
SILVIA needs to appoligize to Mike for making him look stupid. MIKE was supposed to overstate his welcome on the show. That is why right before Mike was suppposed to exit, Mike said "I will graciously leave when I know I am not able to win". Then the audience clapped and Huck looked and Seth and Seth said "Gov. Huckabee" and Huck said "Seth". You can tell Huck was acting the script the whole time. He was supposed to overstate his welcome, it was all part of the script. I hope this reporter gets fired. What a dummy. Huckabee wasn't the one in on the Joke. You are. SILVIA gets the last laugh.

Hey GomerMike
When Romney got out, he had 4 million votes to McCain's 4.7 million and had won 11 States to McCain's 13. Hucky was not even close. The killer for Romney? Winner take all States.
Hucabee was and never will be a contender. He's a phony, brown nosing, nasty tempered populist, who will never be more than a regional candidate. Seriously, check this guy out, he is a crafty dishonest man. He's lied and flipped his way throughout this campaign.
It's documented. Don't forget his ethics violations while in Arkansas. To this day he has not yet been fully vetted.
And putting him on any ticket will alienate not only Moderate Conservatives, big time, but he will be doomed in the Western States. Huckster's subtle bigotry against Mormons will backfire out West where the Mormon vote is very influential. And without the Western states nobody will be elected President. And when it comes out what he thinks of Catholics and Jews? Look out.
Hucksters play for delelgates now, is shallow and egocentric at best, Romney's not competing with him now. It's like running a race with Johnny down the road but Johnny's not there. So Huckster runs the race anyway, alone, and then declares himsef the victor?
Rrrrright!
Romney is now the "Complete Conservative" leader of this Country. Huckster will never have broad based support of all Conservatives, either now or in 2012, he's finished as a National candidate.
The smartest, "most accomplished" candidate in over thirty years has bowed out.
Compare the resume of Romney vs, Hucky or McCain.
*Valedictorian-BYU
*Cumlaude-Harvard Law School
*Baker Scholar-MBA Harvard
*Spent 30 months serving his faith in France-no pay
*Created a 10 Billion Dollar Business
*(never dumped his wife for one 18 years younger with a beer distributorship)
*"Earned" Millions by Saving and Creating literally Hundreds of Business’ and Tens of Thousands of jobs.
*Turned around the Olympics, and a State (Mass.) from the red to the black.
Just to name a few.
Romney has donated Tens of Millions of dollars of his own money for charitable causes, something you will never hear from him. He also took no salaries as Governor or at the Olympics and he has succeeded and excelled beyond measure in his life. He is an Exceptional man.
Hucabees never met a payroll, created a job or run a corner store. And no, running backwoods Arkansas just does not count. I think this country has just about seen a belly full of the Arkansas way of doing things!
Now, we have to settle for the Inarticulate (where's my teleprompter?), Nasty, Bottom of his Class, Prevaricating, Backstabbing, Flip Flopping (check his record) Old Toad, and lest we forget, the "Perceived Cool Guy"(McCain)
How cool is McCain now, people?
Well, as for me and my house, I don't want the average Gomer or Goober to run this country.
With 300+ million people in Our Country, we can and should, not only desire, but demand, the Ideal.
Let's hope in 2012 we can have another Reagan to bail us out. If people are truely honest and objective, right now, there's only one choice, Romney.

If making conflict sells papers, then my compliments to Mark Silva. But, my heart is with Huckabee. He was great! What a fun bit! I'm voting for Mike Huckabee! Oh, and actually, Silva is an Idiot!
Posted by: Luke | February 24, 2008 9:36 PM
The only thing stupid on the show was what they did to Huckabee. Every other person that's ever been on that show were the head line but as NBC always does to a conservative, make him look stupid in the scrip. I'm sure Huck thought he would get more out of it than he did. I never watch that stupid show anymore since the good people from many years ago are gone but I watched it last night just to see Huck. Anybody with any sense knew all that was a scrip but a lot of idiots out there think it's real and he sure did look stupid but I know better. You're not a governor of a state for over 10 years if you are.

FYI; SNL is a comedy show. Surely, the author of this article didn't think this was serious. Why put this up as if its news. This belongs on the entertainment page and should be identified as such when you post it elsewhere (since it was taken quite seriously by some.) Huckabee is intelligent, and not a backwoods hick as some seem to think. He has a great sense of humor. He doesn't need to be a whiz in math; Hire someone who is. How many business men do their books? By the way, he speaks correct English.

Guys I'm not for Huckabee but I saw the skit and him missing his cue to leave the news set on SNL was written in the script, to compare it to his not taking the cue to leave the election it doesn't take a genius to know this.

The joke is on Huck, he is stupid..I know it was a skit... The skit was done by SNL as a put down on Huck.
Huck didn't get it, he played the skit as the fool he really is and SNL accomplished what they wanted...to show everybody how the fool could be suckered into playing the fool.

Correct Jackie!!! A friend of mine once did a performance art piece called "the fool." It was a bicycle. Her teacher sat on it and asked what it was. Hence "the fool."
Mike Huckabee and his followers would have sat on the bike too.

Hey Silva,
I think YOU have overstayed your welcome.
There was a time, not too long ago, that Trib political converage was the best in FOA. There was also a time when Trib content was exclusive to...AOL. You're clearly a legacy of the latter.
This is just one more reason not to subscribe- as if having Sam Zell running things wasn't enough.

Yet, on the SNL set, Huckabee was having a little fun with a question...

From Conservative Voice:
"I read a very interesting article on February 20th that pointed out the campaign of Mike Huckabee was in trouble, as it hadn’t won a state since February 9th, a whopping 11 days prior over a span that included five primaries.
Of course, were the Huckabee campaign making plans based on winning Virginia, Maryland, DC, Washington State, or Wisconsin, one would have to question the sanity of Campaign Manager Ed Rollins. Texas has long been pointed to as the key. A neighboring state to Huckabee’s home state of Arkansas. Huckabee had actually lived in Texas for four years. The State’s large population of Religious Conservatives, and its status as the home of Chuck Norris makes it the best spot for Huckabee to make his next big win. Odds are against him, but that’s never stopped Huckabee before.
Getting There
To make it to Texas, Huckabee had to keep his campaign alive through the Potomac Primaries, Washington, and Wisconsin. There had to be signs of life going into Texas, and in this line-up of primaries that would be hard to achieve. All told, Huckabee’s campaign did the best they could and have a shot at Texas.
February 12th’s primaries in Virginia, DC, and Maryland. Maryland’s GOP generally leaned left, particularly on social issues. DC’s GOP was dominated by liberal Republicans and establishment insiders. Virginia is perhaps the least conservative state in the South, with a very strong establishment wing that has elected a bane of conservatives, Senator John Warner, to five terms in the US Senate.
So, on February 12, Huckabee’s primary focus was on Virginia. He turned a 32 point deficit after Super Tuesday into a 9-point loss, making up 23 points in record time. Huckabee won several congressional districts in Virginia, but as the state was winner-take-all, this didn’t matter towards the delegate count.
Next up was Washington and Wisconsin. Washington’s primary was mail-in and several weeks worth of voting having already completed, Huckabee had little chance to make an impact. Given that 10 of the 19 delegates won that day would be divied up proportionally and 1 each given to the winner of each of Washington’s 9 Congressional districts, there was little reward to campaigning there. No matter what, he’d pick up 2-3 delegates Statewide, and the chances of swaying a delegate in any of the congressional districts was narrow. Instead, Huckabee focused on Wisconsin, and while Huckabee lost statewide, his campaign won a contiguous fifteen county area (Hucksconsin if you will) including two congressional districts and has apparently won all six delegates from District 3 and 7. Now, he looks ahead to Texas, and to a lesser extent, Ohio.
Huckabee has said winning Texas changes everything, and it does. A win in Texas will make McCain’s job of getting to 1191 harder for McCain to do before the convention. McCain has heretofore done very well in Blue States. After March 4th, the only Blue States remaining to vote are Pennsylvania and Oregon. On the other hand, Red States abound: Mississippi, Indiana, North Carolina, Nebraska, Kentucky, Idaho, New Mexico, and South Dakota. A Huckabee win in Texas gives rise to the hope of political junkies the nation over, a brokered convention, a real convention in Minneapolis in September, along with a real debate over the party’s future."
