A Pixar production: 'I Believe in Miracles.'
by Mark Silva
Mike Huckabee, facing an apparent mathematical impossibility in the remaining hunt for Republican presidential nominating delegates, said today that he will not “walk off the field.’’
With the lead in Republican nominating delegates that Sen. John McCain of Arizona holds over Huckabee, even running the table in every remaining primary does not offer Huckabee the number of delegates needed to win his party’s nomination. But Huckabee insisted that he will remain in the fight until his party has a nominee.
“I think we have a shot at Virginia. I think we have a shot at Maryland… I think we have a shot at everywhere we go,’’ Huckabee said today, fresh from caucus and primary wins in the Kansas and Louisiana contests on Saturday and a close fight with McCain in Washington.
“To step aside and have a coronation instead of a nomination, that’s the antithesis of everything Republicans stand for,’’ Huckabee said on NBC News’ Meet the Press. “Miracles are still happening,’’ the ordained Baptist minister said. “I still believe in them.’’
Reminded that he once said he had a hard time seeing McCain getting elected president, Huckabee said: “I have an easier time seeing him elected than I do either of the Democrats…. We’ve not attacked each other… We have mutual respect.’’
“But there are significant differences we have,’’ said Huckabee, citing the anti-abortion constitutional amendment that he supports and the campaign finance reform that McCain supported as a couple of their key differences. And he and McCain will carry on a “civil’’ contest in the remaining primaries ahead, Huckabee said.
Huckabee did allow that he had eaten fried squirrel in college – reminded of a remark he once made about frying the hunted prey in his popcorn popper. Meet the Press moderator Tim Russert suggested that might help him in Virginia’s primary on Tuesday.
“It may kill me in other states,’’ Huckabee said with a laugh, noting that fried squirrel is a Southern delicacy, but, “thank the Lord,’’ he hasn’t eaten it since college.
Huckabee had begun his campaign on this Sunday morning news show in January of 2007, and moderator Russert handed him a test Sunday on issues on which Huckabee has changed his stance – a federal smoking ban, the Cuban embargo and a no-tax pledge.
“First on the smoking ban, I was asked, if that was presented to me, would I sign it… I still believe there is a fundamental right people have to do damage to themselves, but they do not have a right to damage to others in the workplace,’’ Huckabee said. “It is best settled at the state and local level …
“On the second issue, which was about the embargo, that was specifically focused on the rice industry in my state,’’ he said. “As the governor of the No. 1 rice exporter of rice in the nation, we wanted to export rice to Cuba.’’ But then, running for president and looking more closely at the Cuban foreign policy, he said, “I realized that my view was shortsighted… I had to recognize that the embargo did have an important effect.’’
And on taxes, as supporter of a “fair tax’’ in place of the current personal income tax, Huckabee said: “My position now is probably the most conservative of any candidate.
“I realized that my position had to mature in each of these areas… It’s one thing to be the governor of Arkansas,’’ Huckabee said, and another to be president.
Finally, that question about serving as McCain’s running mate.
“I’m not going to be asked,’’ Huckabee said. “I think it’s pretty evident that there would be a lot of people on the list before me…..Everybody says, ‘No, no, wouldn’t ever touch it…. I wouldn’t think about it right now. Until John McCain has 1,190 delegates I wouldn’t think about it.’’

Comments
Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has taken to calling himself a “fiscal conservative,” but who ever heard of a fiscal conservative who raised taxes and spending through the roof while governor of Arkansas? Mike Huckabee is also calling himself “a different kind of Republican,” but that’s just a codeword for a big-government Republican who wants to cover up his tax-and-spend record with folksy talking points and one-liners. Sorry Tax Hike Mike. No dice.
http://www.taxhikemike.org/
1. He doesn’t believe in evolution: Yep, Huckabee is a supporter of the “intelligent design” theory. He has claimed that this issue shouldn’t matter in the presidential election, but why in the world would we want a president who cannot come to objective conclusions based on present information?
2. He is a scaremonger: Huckabee has called Islamofacscism the greatest threat we ever faced. I think he needs to read a few history books and see that a few terrorists in the Middle East are hardly presenting America with greater threats than those faced in its war for independence, a civil war that tore the nation apart, a world war against Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, and a Cold War against a nuclear-armed USSR.
3. He thinks AIDS patients need to be isolated: Huckabee once advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, opposed increased federal funding in the search for a cure and said homosexuality could “pose a dangerous public health risk.” When recently questioned by the media on this view, he defended his previous statements.
4. He puts rapists on the streets: As governor of Arkansas, Huckabee personally demanded the release of a convicted rapist who had been put in jail under Bill Clinton’s governorship. After the man was released on parole, he promptly raped and murdered a young woman. Huckabee has tried to play down his role in the parole of the criminal, but those involved have confirmed that Huckabee was far more involved than he now claims.
5. He claims to be a “fiscal conservative,” but he is lying: Huckabee raised taxes and spending while governor of Arkansas, revealing that he is a free-spending big-government Republican.
6. He thinks God wanted the American people to re-elect George W Bush: At the 2004 meeting of the Republican Governor’s Association, Huckabee put on a performance in which he received a cell phone call from God in with the almighty endorced George W Bush’s reelection campaign.
7. He supports torture: Huckabee will continue the Bush Administration’s policy of torturing detainees if elected president.
8. He wants to give illegal immigrants drivers’ licenses: Thought that stuff he said about being tough on immigration in the youtube video with Chuck Norris was true? You’ve been fooled.
9. He holds extremist views on abortion: Even many pro-lifers would agree that a 15 year-old mentally retarded girl who was raped by her stepfather should be able to get an abortion. As governor of Arkansas, Huckabee blocked Medicaid funding of just such an abortion.
10. He doesn’t follow the news: When the newest National Intelligence Estimate came out revealing Iran was no longer developing nuclear weapons, Huckabee was one of the last people in America to find out about it. Does this guy ever pick up a newspaper?
11. He thinks God wants him to be president: Yes, Huckabee actually said that.
12. He doesn’t want us to know the truth about his past: Huckabee had computer hard drives used during his time as governor crushed at the end of his term in order to keep the information stored there from the public and the press. What are you hiding, governor?

Your summary is an over-the-top personal attack of the type The Swamp says it won't publish, yet here it is. Anyone who wants to know the truth about Mike Huckabee should do their own independent research and avoid this vitriolic drivel.

Mike Huckabee is the BEST candidate to beat Hillary/Barack. McCain couldn't talk his way out of a paper bag...they'll cream him in a debate. Huckabee is an persuasive orator in the mold of Reagan or Abe Lincoln. Candidates like Mike come along very rarely and it seems like America finally woke up yesterday to who the true conservative is... Of course there's alot of hate (like from the previous poster) that comes his way...but obviously this means they're running scared, otherwise they wouldn't bother to comment. Go Mike!

Oh give me a break...
I'm a Democrat and I'm voting for Huckabee!
Many voters out there remember when Democrats were conservative and believed in Less Taxes, Family First, Strong Military w/Control of our Borders and Simple Moral Ethics?
Huckabee is my Republican choice (as a voting Democrat) and MUCH Better then both Democratic options.

These posters that regergitate the same tired worn out already refuted talking myths are making it so much fun to be winning all over the country. Washington state cared so little about the race they quit counting at 87% return, Vote count difference 201. I call that a victory for Mike.

Mike Huckabee is truly an authentic conservative:
1. Huckabee is 100% prolife--the REAL thing! That should be enough, given that 48 million babies have been killed by abortion, for true conservatives to vote for him. Nothing else even compares in seriousness to this grave issue. However, there are many more issues where Huckabee is obviously an authentic conservative:
2. Huckabee supports the marriage amendment. Mike Huckabee has always consistently stood his ground for the sanctity of marriage.
3. Huckabee is a firm supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and is a lifetime member of the NRA.
4. Huckabee is the only candidate to sign a pledge to not allow amnesty. His 9-point immigration plan is more extensive than any other candidates' plans. At the same time, he is compassionate toward the immigrants themselves, especially their children. He doesn't believe in punishing children for the failure of the government to secure our borders.
5. Huckabee cut taxes more than 90 times in a predominantly Democrat state. When he left office the state income tax rates remained not one percent higher than when he left office more than a decade later. He also DOUBLED the standard deduction for individuals and married couples, DOUBLED the childcare tax credit, ELIMINATED the marriage penalty tax, repealed capital gains taxes on home sales, lowered the capital gains rate by 25%, expanded the homestead exemption, and set up tax-free savings accounts for medical care and college tuition. He IS a fiscal conservative.
6. Huckabee believes in a strong military. He holds to the Reagan doctrine of strength through peace.
7. During his 10+ years as a governor, Huckabee showed himself to be friendly to homeschooling. He signed into law homeschooling-friendly legislation, and he even had a homeschooling parent on his education board.
8. Huckabee's plan to abolish the IRS and have a Fair Tax is as conservative as you can get on taxes. He also strongly believes in relieving the heavy tax burden on smal-businees owners, and would do so as governor.
9. Huckabee will help this nation to once and for all be free from dependence on foreign oil, and he has established a timetable to do that. Politicians have been talking about this for decades, but Huckabee has gone a step further: he has committed to doing it and has set a timetable (10 years).
10. Huckabee believes that we are one nation *under God*.
There is no other leading candidate in this race who even compares to the authentic-conservative credentials of Mike Huckabee.
For the sake of the nation, for the sake of the unborn babies killed by abortion and by embryonic stem cell research, for the sake of the sanctity of marriage, and for the sake of the 2nd Amendment, and for the sake of having a president who will honor God -- I pray that Mike Huckabee will once again surprise the media pundits and those who keep wishing to no avail for his demise.
I will vote for Huckabee when TEXAS has its primary!

It is not enough to "support" another candidate for an election... you must seek to "destroy" the opponents in the process.

OK. I need to address something that I am SO tired of hearing. People keep slamming Huckabee because he said he didn't believe in evolution. Then they throw out this nonsense that those who don't believe in evolution are a bunch of unintelligent extremists, and so on and so forth. Yawnnnn!
Of course, these attacks are completely irrelevant to the presidential nomination, but I can only listen to nonsense for so long without speaking up.
The truth is, the scientific evidence for the theory of evolution is a big ZERO. I am speaking of macroevolution--the notion that one species evolved from another. I invite the open-minded scientifically oriented person to thoroughly research all the information at http://www.creationscience.com/onlinebook/FAQ417.html, hosted by a PhD who used to be an evolutionist until he more closely investigated the FACTS.
This is one of several places where an intelligent person will come to see that the theory of evolution is essentially a false RELIGIOUS belief, and not a bonafide scientific conclusion.
I have a BS in a scientific field (magna cum laude); I also have an MA in another field (summa cum laude). The true scientific method regarding a theory is to rigorously test it to *try to make it fail*, to try to come up with other explanations for the reality that the theory is trying to model. If the theory is still standing after this rigorous test, then it is worthy of being called a theory. But, even then, it is NOT *fact*, and it may one day be replaced one day. (Einstein disproved some of what were once considered "laws" of physics.) However, the advocates of the theory of evolution do not welcome such a test, but instead push this theory with all the religious fervor of an evangelist (albeit, a false one). Why? Because the basis for this theory is NOT scientific; it is philosophical: the basis is a denial of the existence of God (a very foolhardy thing, since Thomas Aquinas proved the existence of God in at least six different ways! Read the Summa Theologica—if you dare. :o)).
Check out the facts. Research this issue more thoroughly. Be honest and open-minded. Don't just spout off what the media or your Freshmen College Biology teacher told you. The theory of evolution is about as sound a pile of ashes.
So, please spare us your attacks against Gov. Huckabee because he hasn't signed up to your "religion"--evolution. True thinkers know better.
"Evolution is a fairy tale for grown-ups. This theory has helped nothing in the progress of science. It is useless."

The people of Arkansas re-elected Governor Huckabee until his term limits expired and he was also their Lt. Governor prior to that. To think that the State of Arkansas would re-elect someone over and over because he was a tax hiker is beyond ridiculous. He was great for the State of Arkansas and THEY have voted for him as their President too in case you haven't heard!
Take your slam false facts back to the Club for Greed where they belong.
WE VOTE HUCKABEE!!!!

I'm voting for Huckabee in the Texas primary and also the general election if he is nominated.
If McCain wins the nomination and runs against Hillary, I'll Stay home.
If McCain wins the nomination and runs against Obama, I'll vote for Obama.
I vote for who I think will be the best person for the job from the choices.
McCain is qualified to be president but I just don't like him. He has no personality. Huckabee does.

I hope Mike Huckabee takes his candidacy all the way to the convention floor. The American people want this man to be president. Maybe that is why the old party line Republicans are talking trash about him. Maybe they need to wake up and realize Americans are sick and tired of the old Republican bosses that hand-pick the president and we are not listening to the talking heads that ignore that change is here. You go, Mike, all the way.

Miracles? What is miraculous about the average redneck having the wool pulled over their eyes by yet another fraud? And such an obvious, pathetic one at that. In citing his absurdness, please don't forget forcing school officials to put weight on kids report cards. Every credible eating disorder therapists warned this was disasterous! But the healthier-than=thou huckster doesn't care about kids, their health, or self-esteem. He did it as a look at me, look at me ploy to call attention to his own weight loss. Then goes on to scapegoat all fat people just because HE was a glutton. I am putting my real name on this post because I myself have sacrificed for my beliefs a time or two. People who live in CA or AZ might know what I am talking about. Huckabee is a fraud and not a true man of God. That he came this far is an embarrassment to the U.S.

Huck's word "miracles" = the cross on his bookshelves in his transparent Christmas political commercial. I think he is an embarrassment to most Christians. Often, there is too much in-your-face hatred, belittling, abuse, and killing in the name of God. Why not be caring toward all people, and modest in public, then pray in private? The use of God for political gain seems to be a one way ticket to Hades--not Huck's Hog Heaven. And then, there is W. Bush--THE Christian. Excuse me while I go puke on my shoes. How many hundreds of thousands of people have been killed by the Bush mouth--and pen?

the only miracle is that people actually think this hillbilly has a chance to be our next president. it's cute that he appeals to the xenophobe/fundamentalist/idiot crowd, but it's also scary to think of how large that crowd is. thankfully it's not large enough.
Posted by: chad_broski | February 11, 2008 9:42 AM
Mike Huckabee is a man with nothing to offer the American people. The only miracle will be when his supporters wake up to the fact that Huckabee is an under-vetted former governor who is manifestly unprepared to be president of the United States.
His salesmanship skills obscure the real significance of his rise within the Republican Party. Mike Huckabee represents something that is either tremendously encouraging or deeply disturbing, depending on your point of view: a marriage of Christian fundamentalism with economic populism. Rather than employing the patented Bush-Rove tactic of using abortion and gay rights to hoodwink low-income Christians into supporting patrician, pro-corporate policies, Huckabee is a bigger-government Republican who emphasizes prison reform and poverty relief. In the world of GOP politics, he represents something entirely new -- a cross between John Edwards and Jerry Falwell, an ordained Southern Baptist preacher who actually seems to give a shit about the working poor.
But Huckabee is also something else: full-blown nuts, a Christian goofball of the highest order. He believes the Earth may be only 6,000 years old, angrily rejects the evidence that human beings evolved from "primates" and thinks America wouldn't need so much Mexican labor if we allowed every aborted fetus to grow up and enter the workforce. To top it off, Huckabee also left behind a record of ethical missteps in the swamp of Arkansas politics that make Whitewater seem like a jaywalking ticket.

I see a bunch of liberals spewing their vitriol in this thread. Notice how their arguments are always based on hate and intolerance, well, of America and Christians anyway.
Huckabee has been so misrepresented by even our own conservative pundits. I've learned this election that pundits don't do any real research, just elaborate on the headlines.
Thanks to all those in this thread that have posted to clear up these misrepresentations about Huckabee.
I've voting for Mike mainly for the FairTax. The FairTax will give the conservatives the freer free market and economic growth that they want and give the liberals the funding for the big government they want. It will do this and save Social Security and Medicare by growing the economy.
http://www.realclearmarkets.com/articles/2007/12/the_fair_tax_is_about_economic.html
The FairTax is THE issue that can win the whitehouse because it appeals to many independents and liberals too, well, at least the ones smart enough to understand the importance of economic growth. McCain will NOT win the presidency.
While I believe in less government spending, I'm happy to fight that battle another day so we can get the FairTax passed. Who knows, I might just be so busy making money after the FairTax passes I'll forget to fight for those budget cuts lol.
If Huckabee doesn't win the nomination, he and Ron Paul can still get 60% of the remaining votes and force a brokered convention; then anything is possible.

Everyone has the right to question a person's stance on issues, but the moment you cross the line and judge a person's heart - how Christian is that?
You are judging Huckabee for presuming that he is using God. Let's take time to take out the plank in our own eye, please.
If you are without sin, go ahead and cast the first stone.
I was convicted about this because I was really irritated with Romney and I started judging his heart. Then I realized, I just needed to step back and know that it is where he stood on issues that I disagreed with and there was no need to tear down the person or claim to be God by telling the world what his heart is really like.
In the same way, if you claim to be a Christian, how can you judge the heart of Huckabee? You are not the final judge, so please stick to the issues instead of character attacks.
Posted by: Phoebe | February 12, 2008 11:51 AM
Logic Prisoner,
Anyone can claim they're a Christian on a forum. Liberals don't mind lying if the ends justify the means. It's all part of their moral relativist beliefs.
Your list of anti-Huckabee statements prove to me you're no Christian; every one of them is false or an exaggeration. For example you try to minimize the threat of Islamofacscism; this shows you're a godless, moral-less, soulless Liberal through and through.
As a Libertarian Deist and moral objectivist I'll happily support a moral absolutist Christian for president. Why would anyone support a Progressive like Hillary once you know her morals shift with the wind?
Quite simply the Left is trying to make anything morally wrong into just another lifestyle choice or at least accepting any moral values as some kind of superior attitude. If the Left is allowed to do this it will destroy our country just like what happened to Rome.
I believe there are plenty of liberals on the internet claiming they are Mormons or Christians trying to fragment the republican party. There is no real animosity between any Americans of faith.
All of us moral realists, objectivists and absolutists are united to save this country from the moral relativists of the Left.
