LORAIN, Ohio—Barack Obama continued to press rival Hillary Clinton today on past statements of support for NAFTA and the Clinton Administration’s leading role in securing the trade agreement’s ratification as the two Democrats struggled over Ohio, an industrial state that lost hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs to foreign competitors.
Though Clinton argued on Saturday that the agreement was negotiated by the George W. Bush Administration, Obama laid responsibility squarely with the Clintons for the trade agreement squarely with the Clintons for the trade agreement, which is deeply unpopular here.
“Let’s be clear: It was her husband who got NAFTA passed. In her own book, Senator Clinton called NAFTA one of ‘Bill’s successes’ and ‘legislative victories,’” Obama said, referring to her memoir, Living History.
Speaking to a town hall meeting of manufacturing workers at a gypsum wallboard plant near Cleveland, Obama also cited a 2004 statement in which Clinton said, “I think, on balance, NAFTA has been good for New York and America.”
But he presented himself as a dedicated foe of NAFTA.
“I don’t think NAFTA has been good for America – and I never have,” he said.
Still, in answer to a worker’s question, he offered a position similar to his rival, saying he did not favor repealing the trade agreement but would seek to “amend” it to include greater protection for labor and environmental standards. Clinton has proposed a plan to “fix” NAFTA to address similar concerns.
“I don’t think it is realistic for us to completely repeal NAFTA,” Obama said. “I believe this because over the 10 years or more it’s been in place, now you’ve got so many relationships, so many U.S. businesses with suppliers, etc. that are going back and forth that to actually reverse it would probably result in more jobs losses in the United States than job gains.”
But Obama said criticism of her on the trade agreement was still legitimate because the “premise in her candidacy throughout this campaign has been thirty-five years of experience including eight years in the White House.”
“Every good thing that happened she says she was a part of,” Obama added. “So the notion that you can selectively pick what you take credit for and then run away from what isn’t politically convenient--that doesn’t make sense.”
Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said the former first lady had criticized NAFTA well before her presidential run, pointing to a March 2000 speech in which she described the trade agreement as "flawed."
Asked by a reporter about Ralph Nader’s announcement this morning that he would run for president as a third-party candidate, Obama was dismissive.
“There you go. He does it every four years,” Obama said.
The Illinois senator also brushed aside criticism from Nader that he is too friendly to corporate interests.
“His view is unless it is Ralph Nader , then you are not tough enough on any of these issues,” Obama said. “He thought that there was no difference between Al Gore and George Bush, and eight years later I think people realize that Ralph did not know what he was talking about.”

Comments
The conservatives have depended on churches and activist preachers to get the faithful out, and they have never been criticized for cult-like sentiments and activities, despite their use of fervant religious language to whip up feelings. The enthusiasm of Senator Obama's supporters has drawn much criticism, including from the Clintons, for similar fervor. But Obama's supporters are acting out of a deep sense of patriotism for a UNITED STATES that still has promises to keep. Promises to the younger generations, promises for social justice and equality for all. Sentaor Obama has modelled a life of immense promise--to rise in the corporate or legislative or academic world--to demonstrate a choice for extraordinary public service. The kind of idealism his life story illuminates is the kind of idealism that has motivated the best in US history and in its citizens. This possibility, to move away from the two decades of biiter, selfish, sleazy, sex-riddled, sheer incompetent idiocy of politics, toward a better republic and a truer democracy, away from a government owned by the powerful and rich, to take back our beloved country, is what excites a senior citizen feminist like me and many many other citizens who want a better America and a better world for our children and grandchildren. Our support of the Obama campaign has nothing to do with cults and everything to do with patriotism.

I am shocked that a candidate who is running on integrity, unity, and hope as his main contribution to US politics would make such groundless assertions.

Please go on Politico.com and find Michelle Obama's thesis on racial divide. A lot needs to be looked at with Obama's candicacy that is not being looked at. America can be in serious trouble. The press is not exposing what they rightly should. It all adds up --marries an unpatriotic racist, belongs to an Afrocentric church, he wont' wear a flag pin.

This attack by Sen. Obama doesn't only show his lack of experience to run the country but also that he's ready to say anything to be elected. Does Sen. Obama believe for one minute that large corporations need NAFTA to move their operations to a country where they can cut their costs by cheaper labor?
To make such a statement is an insult to the American people's intelligence.

Obama, I'm really getting tired of your holier-than-thou semantics of everything that has transpired before you ever came on the scene. How convenient it is for you to criticize in hindsight on just about everything if it benefits you. How hypocritical it is for you to have voted 'present' 130 times in the senate and then point fingers and talk about needing change. How dare you. And now you criticize Ralph Nader for doing the very same thing that you have done in this democratic race. He has always been the voice of discension. Sound familiar?

The Clintons have done phenomenal damage to this country with NAFTA. Hillary was picked for Weasel of the Year Award for her role in outsourcing American jobs. Now her anger is showing, and I do not envision a person with such little emotional control sitting in the White House with her finger on the button.

Where are you bloggers coming from? Keep your negative comments out and stick to facts. Obama DID say (in 2004) that he would like to see more trade agreements similar to NAFTA. Notwithstanding, he has never PROMOTED NAFTA. It was the CLinton administration that sold and promoted it to the American people. Hillary did not voice any concern until she had sealed up her New York senatorial campaign in preparation for her presidential bid. Hillary's two-faced candidacy will come to haunt her as bloggers and journalists pull out all the old quotations from her promoting NAFTA

Ms.Piff...
and Obama refuses to put his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance...that act is un-American.
We also have to ask ourselves if Obama gets glee seeing The American flag burned by radical muslims???

Billary should be blamed for prior support of NAFTA and the disasterous invasion of Iraq.

Unfair???
I guess you missed that HRC direct quote from 2004 -- “I think, on balance, NAFTA has been good for New York and America.”
Or maybe you missed her statement at the Las Vegas Democratic Debate on November 15, 2007 -- "NAFTA was a mistake to the extent that it did not deliver on what WE had hoped it would."
Or what about her 2003 memoir, "Living History", when she wrote -- "(Bob Dole) couldn't hand incumbent Bill Clinton any more legislative victories, particularly after Bill's successes on the budget, the Brady bill and NAFTA."
Yeah... Obama's being REAL unfair! Hillary never supported NAFTA and she was always an opponent of it!!!

Senator Obama is hope for America. Michelle Obama is hope for the American people. Keep up the good work Mr. and Mrs. Obama - it is time for change. When true change is on the horizon, the evil doers ALL rush together to prevent it. It doesn't matter EVIL DOERS - ALMIGHTY GOD IS IN CONTROL!!!!

For Hillary to say that she just became aware of Obama's mailings is just rediculous. Both campaigns are immediately aware of every piece of mail and every ad. It is timely for her to make it an objection now. However, the ads are based on true debate issues, as they should be.

I always thought that putting your hand over your heart during the national anthem was optional, since 3/4ths of all people don't in the crowds I've been in when the anthem was played. Also, I won't wear a flag lapel pin because it has been so identified with support for the Iraq war. I don't think either of these things makes me a Muslim or an unpatriotic American. I strongly suspect that people who say such incredibly silly stuff to attack Obama do it for a reason: because their real reason for disliking him is no longer considered respectable.

....and look who Obama's best friend is... A Syrian born muslim named [Tony Rezko] who's sitting in jail waiting trial on extortion charges.
Liberals have to start asking themselves....Who is Barack Hussein Obama?
Conservative, moderate Republicans and Democrats already know about Obama and will vote for McCain in Nov.

The Obama campaign quotes a story written by a paper that endorsed Sen. Clinton and he's the one being unfair?! Once the mailers are printed, you're not going to recall them just because the NYTimes retracted some punctuation. That's a ridiculous suggestion. Also, with respect to the suggestion that Sen. Obama failed to place his hand over his heart during the Pledge, that's blatantly false. I don't place my hand over my heart during the National Anthem and I'm an Army veteran! I wonder if those who are complaining about his not putting his hand over his heart during the Anthem have served? I suspect not.

Obama's lofty talk is empty, and when it comes to real substance, look at the fliers he sent out. Some messiah. The Obama fanatics are in fact delusional. Here's what factcheck.org had to say, after Obama's cocky and dismissive comments about Clinton, who's worked her tail off for many years to accomplish things that matter, like health insurance for children (successfully) while he's blowing smoke. Here's what factcheck.com says about the NAFTA and health care fliers: Nonpartisan Factcheck.org checked out the mailers and generally agrees with Clinton’s assessment:
Trade: A mailer showing a locked plant gate quotes Clinton as saying she believed NAFTA was “a boon” to the economy. Those are not her words and Obama was wrong to put quote marks around them. In fact, she’s been described by a biographer as privately opposing NAFTA in the White House.
Health Care: A second mailer said Clinton’s health care plan “forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can’t afford it.” We have previously said that mailer “lacks context” and strains the facts. But both Obama and Clinton have been exaggerating their differences on this issue.
This raises the possibility that the Obama campaign is doing what frontrunners should never do: becoming over-confident and sloppy.
Obama is pathetic and his flock is a laughing stock. Hillary's finally taking off the kids gloves and she's going to win this.

The article says Clinton attributes NAFTA to the "George W. Bush" administration.
The reference should probably be to the "George H.W. Bush" administration. NAFTA was negotiated, approved, and implemented before George W. Bush took office.

At this point Clinton is only doing harm to the Democratic party. Do the right thing Mrs. Clinton... consider the whole rather than your part in it.
Please.
Posted by: PulSamsara | February 24, 2008 9:35 PM
Why do Hillary supporters appear so hateful? Are these pitiful comments acts of desperation by the Clinton campaign? Hillary would just be more Bush but with mandatory health care. And Hillary is too divisive to accomplish anything.

Hillary's best friends are the special interests who donated almost $900,000.00 to her campaign. I wonder what they think about Hillary blowing it on 5 star hotels and designer clothes with bizarre collars?

Once Obama will have won the Democratic nomination, the race issue will 'kill' his chances to become president of the USA. Just wait and see!

Paul Volker is one of the Obama supporters. He is more accomplished than you are Martin.
Martin, I know its tough to lose especially when it is Bill Clinton that caused it.
Clinton is not the person of her time. Face the fact its over.
To win by double digits in Ohio she is going to have to change the mind of approximately 20% of the voting population. Unless the elections are rigged, it not going to happen.

Eberndorfer: I don't think Americans are as racist as you'd like us to believe. Obama has a good shot at winning the presidency,Hillary's chances are nill.

In her book, Hillary tried to take credit for NAFTA: Hillary: "Creating a free trade zone in North America-The largest free trade zone in the world-would expand U.S. exports, create jobs and ensure that our economy was reaping the benefits, not the burdens of globalization." (Hillary Rodham Clinton, Living History, 2003, p. 182)So, Hillary is going to explain that, to support her husband, she stood silent while a treaty passed that caused the loss of thousands of jobs in Ohio? This seems like a pretty lame excuse and I can't believe she would really say that if confronted. Should make an interesting debate point. Why she does not want to release the records of her 8 years of experience??????????
Posted by: Mario | February 24, 2008 10:57 PM
So Obama says: NAFTA has been bad for the economy but getting rid of something that has been bad for the economy would make the economy worse so it's better to stick with the bad instead of dumping the bad and avoiding the worse even though what we have right now in NAFTA is bad.
Anybody make sense of this?
Obama should stick to his feel-good platitudes.

In touting a "Co-Presidency
Hillary must ALSO take credit for the mishaps of their inept Administration"
She has it in her own book about the wonderment of NAFTA, but NOW, wants to retract it? Too LATE-it is out there. She cannot waffle on this as she tries
to do repeatedly-Ex:In one of the first debates, when
she was "BOTH FOR AND ANTI
ILLEGAL ALIEN DRIVERS' LICENSES THAT ELIOT SPITZER
WAS TRYING TO PUSH THROUGH-
AND SAID IT IN THE SAME SENTENCE. SHE IS NOT BEING
PINNED DOWN & PRESSED TO ANSWER & THE MODERATORS LET
HER SLIDE ON THESE ISSUES.
She & Bill have had passes w/the MSM from day one & now her being looked at more closely, she is teed off. Too bad-"YOU SAY THE WORDS-YOU OWN THEM"

Regardless of political parties, I think the candidates that dropped out were better than the candidates we have as choices right now.
Again, regardless of political parties. I would vote for Colin Powell or Condoleezza Rice in a heart beat. These are two very intelligent people that have executive decision making experience. As far as Obama, I just don't trust him. He's a good charismatic speaker that speaks of change, but offers no insight as to what he's going to fix and how he's going to fix it. This is dangerous.
Hillary is a socialist and a power hungry professional politician just like her husband.
This is also dangerous.
I'm not a McCain fan either. But, I think he's the lesser of the three evils. He's just old. I hope he chooses a younger V.P.

Clinton quotes Obama in a new mailer saying:
"the United State should continue to work with the World Trade Organization and pursue deals such as the North American Free Trade Agreement"
Here's what was actually said:
“But Democrat Obama said Keyes' ideas could lead to trade wars that would harm farmers, who are always looking for new markets willing to buy American crops. He said the United State should continue to work with the World Trade Organization and pursue deals such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, but the country must be more aggressive about protecting American interests. ‘We don't want to set off trade wars. What we want to make sure of is that our farmers are treated fairly,’ Obama said. ‘The problem in a lot of our trade agreements is that the administration tends to negotiate on behalf of multinational companies instead of workers and communities.’” (AP, 9/8/04)

Clinton is clearly swiping a few words out of context to smear Obama's position.

No, I do not think Americans are racists, generally less than Europeans. But once your 'former European special interest' media expands, of course only subtly, on the race issue, together with Obamas 'terrorist' Moslem middle name, Obama will be defeated by McCain, the true American 'anti-terrorist'. Your voters are a gullible bunch of non- or semi-educated people!
