COLUMBUS, Ohio—Barack Obama today suggested that a passionate denunciation Hillary Clinton delivered this morning assailing his campaign for “Karl Rove” tactics may have been just so much performance art for the cameras.
Clinton blasted the Obama campaign for flyers sent to Ohio voters arguing mandates to purchase insurance contained in her health care plan would “punish” people who cannot afford health insurance, as well as another Obama flyer that highlighted past praise for NAFTA, a trade deal that is anathema to many in the state.
Noting that the literature “started going out several days ago, if not weeks ago,” Obama said he was “puzzled by the sudden change of tone.”
“Unless these were just brought to her attention, it makes me think there’s something tactical about her getting so exercised this morning,” added Obama, who defended the flyers as accurate portrayals of Clinton’s positions at a hastily arranged press availability while he was campaigning in Columbus.
Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said the literature on NAFTA was sent out to Ohio voters more than a week ago and the literature criticizing Clinton’s health care plan was sent out several days earlier.
One mailing from the Obama campaign has been used before and the Clinton campaign contends it plays off the “Harry and Louise” ads that were run by the insurance industry to fight her early 1990s efforts to create a national health insurance program.
The mailing says, “Hillary’s health care plan forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can’t afford it.” It also says, “Punishing families who can’t afford health care to begin with just doesn’t make sense.”
Another mailing involved NAFTA, which was implemented under the administration of Clinton's husband. The mailing cited a Newsday chart of her calling NAFTA a "boon." But Newsday later noted that it should have chosen better wording for its chart and said Obama's use of the word "boon" was "misleading."
Clinton’s plan mandates that everyone get insurance, while Obama’s only mandates coverage for children. Obama maintains his plan would make insurance more affordable but Clinton contends his would leave 15 million people uninsured and not accomplish the goal of universal health care.
“Shame on you Barack Obama,” Clinton told reporters after delivering a speech at Cincinnati Technical and Community College.
“Enough of the speeches and the big rallies and then using tactics that are right out of Karl Rove’s playbook,” Clinton said. “This is wrong and every Democrat should be outraged because this is the kind of attack that not only undermines core Democratic values but gives aid and comfort to the very special interests and their allies in the Republican Party who are against doing what we want to for America.”
At Obama’s press availability, he said his rival had made their differences on a mandate requiring all Americans to buy health insurance “the centerpiece not just of the health care debate but practically her campaign.”
“A mandate does not work unless you impose harsh, stiff penalties on those who don’t purchase it, and that’s what we point out in this mailer,” Obama said.
Obama said it was clear that Clinton previously had backed NAFTA and praised the trade agreement’s impact.
“We point that out in a state that has been devastated by trade and is deeply concerned about the position of candidates on trade,” Obama said.
“Senator Clinton as part of the Clinton Administration supported NAFTA. In her book, she called it one of the Administrations successes,” Obama added, referring to a passage in her memoir, Living History.
Campaign aides also circulated to reporters a 2004 statement in which Clinton said “on balance, NAFTA has been good for New York and America.”

Isn't it obvious that Hillary's anger is contrived? She is desperate to get some traction in this campaign. But anger and backbiting is not what voters are looking for this season, at least I hope not. That is why Obama is ahead of Clinton at this point in the campaign.

I love how Clinton blaims him for attacking her when she has been doing this for weeks. The very notion of her saying he should be ashamed of himself is just sad. How much more bullcrap will she try and stick down our troats.

There is a video on You Tube from an episode of Meet The Press- regarding Hillary and NAFTA - her 2004 as quoted in the above article is accurate. The video shows how flipped on that entirely during a debate when she began her presidential campaigning. Here's the link:

Congratulations, Hillary, you just played into the "overly-emotional female" stereotype, proved that you are unfit to be President, and set all women back about 50 years. You must be so proud!

Hillary is starting to act like John McCain/Bush:
You really want this guy with his finger on the button?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23201300/
"F--- you," he shouted at Texas Sen. John Cornyn last year.
"Only an a------ would put together a budget like this," he told the former Budget Committee chairman, Sen. Pete Domenici, in 1999.
"I'm calling you a f------ jerk!"
"F--- you. I know more about this than anyone else in the room," McCain reportedly shouted.
"I decided I didn't want this guy anywhere near a trigger," Domenici told Newsweek in 2000.
"Do I insult anybody or fly off the handle or anything like that? No, I don't," insisted McCain.

Obama is unscrupulous in his spinning of Clinton's positions. Clinton has NEVER said she would impose penalties under her universal health care program on those Americans who did not get health insurance. She has persistently refused to state a position on that issue. If she did, Obama would criticize that. Clinton's too smart for that.

It's a stunt and a shameful one at that. If the fliers were wholly inaccurate, I could defend this level of indignation, but they're true. Her plan is a mandate which will require enforcement measures, and she did support NAFTA (thanks for the youtube link Marie).
This stunt too will backfire.

There is nothing wrong with Hillary being angry about him spreading misconceptions regarding her platform!

I used to respect Hillary Clinton. I really did. When this primary election started I believed, even though I supported Obama, that Clinton wouldn't be a bad choice either.
I was wrong.
Hillary Clinton is the ultimate hypocrite. She criticises Obama for plagiarism (in which he borrowed one passage from a friend who had given him permission) and then lifts a closing statement from John Edwards a few minutes later.
She says Obama is just words and empty talk, then makes a pathetic attempt to start up a "Yes We Will" chant in one of her speeches.
She has run a very negative campaign against Obama, blowing things way out of proportion, then turns around and complains whenever Obama runs his own limited negative ads (which all focus on her proven, professional record).
I have lost respect for Hillary Clinton. I might thoroughly disagree with John Mccain, but at least he's got some traces of integrity.

I am sad for Sen. Clinton, because I think she felt she could repair much of the damage done by Cheney, Rove and(by default), our pitiful Mr. Bush, and her impulses are honest. However, she is too locked into past fights and too desperate to fix what couldn't be fixed the first go-round. (Bill wasn't lying aboout "two-for-one".) I admire her idealism, her energy, her determination; but it is just not her time.
Posted by: Rae | February 23, 2008 9:47 PM
Hillary Clinton is being a Clinton right now. Do something and then deny or try to spin it. Obamas mailing explains what her plan is. Of course if you are going to put a mandate on something you will have to enforce it with a fine or some kind of punishment, if not then it is not a mandate, it is called optional.
Nafta was a deal that was backed by both the clintons, Bill just happened to be president. You know she talks about her influence then she reverts back to saying she didn't have any say. She liked it, she doesn't like it, she backed her husband and was proud she has been fighting to change it....What will it be next week, I guess whatever will win her votes!
Don't allow another Clinton into the Whitehouse, vote Obama!

What a performance by Hilary. She should really consider a career in acting.
Such outbursts just points out that she is so emotionally unstable and unfit to be a leader talkless of being President. She is not only ruining her chances but that of women in general.

james.... ummm... not to burst your bubble there, but what does mandated mean? oh yes... here it is
mandated: To make mandatory, as by law; decree or require (freedictionary.com)
mandatory: Required or commanded by authority; obligatory (freedictionary.com)
i can't think of any law that is mandated and doesn't have a consequence:
* mandated speed limits
* mandated car insurance
* mandated reporting
* state mandated testing
google these. see what happens when one doesn't follow a mandate. there are always consequences.
hillary's just biding her time. she knows if she were to actually state the consequences, people might not be so willing to accept her plan. so she smiles and says her health plan will cover everyone!!! ofcourse it will. have you ever seen a speed limit NOT cover everyone. lol.

Let me give everyone the 411 on this issue. Maybe if people actually go to their websites, they could make an informed decision.
Hillary does indeed mandate healthcare for everyone, but it IS affordable just as Sen. Obamas. Clinton has the same tax credits and subsidies as Obamas offers with his health plan. His ad definitely wrongfully portrays her positions in it not being affordable. Also, Obama's plan would keep the insurance system the same as it currently is, not affordable for Americans. Even if Obama in fact makes it affordable, people still wont be able to afford it. If they are given the option to decline it, we'll never work towards a system where the gov't controls healthcare as its done in Canada, UK, France etc. We'll be in the same position as we are now, millions of Americans not covered. And I like how Obama wow's the audience with his offering of opening up congressional plans to everyone. My mom works for the gov't and recieves that same plan, and its horrible. No one would ever be able to afford it. On many occasions I have to see a doctor out of our network because its CHEAPER than going to one in our network. People would never be able to afford that. I'm a perfect example of Obama glorifying things like this gov't plan when he very well knows how expensive the doctors are in the plan.
And the NAFTA wrongfully portrays Clinton as well. She currently as has been against NAFTA for years. She has repeatedly said that it must be reformed and hasnt supported it in years. Although she did support it when Bill was in office because it was great for our economy AT THE TIME. Over time, things change, the economy changes, which calls for adaptation of past agreements.

Hillary is the one gleening from Rove's playbook. It was Rove who broke into his own office in Texas when his guy was down in the polls and blamed it on Democrats. Even got an FBI Agent to investigate, later the same Agent would investigate Coulter's voting fraud, and guess what, she did nothing wrong.
Point is, the one who smelled it, dealt it. She's using Roves book and blaming Obama for it.

James Clinton did say she would go after wages:
GOING AFTER PEOPLE’S WAGES: Clinton Says One Option For Enforcing Her Health Insurance Mandate Is “Going After People’s Wages.” When asked about her enforcement mechanism, Clinton said, “Well, they don't have to pay fines, George. We want them to have insurance. We want it to be affordable.” When pushed again on whether or not she would garnish wages, Clinton said, “George, we will have an enforcement mechanism, whether it's that or it's or it's some other mechanism through the tax system or automatic enrollments…And the reason why I think there are a number of mechanisms, going after people's wages, automatic enrollment, when you are at the place of employment, you will be automatically enrolled, whatever the mechanism is...” [ABC, 2/3/08]

If Clinton had any sense of honor, she would concede instead of dragging herself, Obama and the Democratic Party through the mud whenever her handlers decide she needs to get tough. They've been attacking him from early on including sending out a totally false mailer in NH about his being weak on a woman's right to choose (entirely bogus). She may not like his characterizations, but they are accurate and reflect poorly on her.

Looks like Obama got caught in another lie during the debate with Hillary!
The Pentagon yesterday cast 'serious doubt' about Obama's claim that he met an Army Captain whose unit had served in Afghanistan and didn't have enough ammunition, vehicles or men in his platoon.
Of course, Obama never mentioned the Army captains name.

Is it me or is Hillary now disavowing her participation in Bills Presidency which she touts as a large part of her "experience". Once again we are seeing the famous Clinton politic speak...
If Nafta has no relationship to her because she wasn't even in office then...then her experience is less but if her experience is real than her NAFTA responsibility is real.
Oh lordy the Clintons is talking to us dummies again!
Hillary needs to go back to the senate and continue the good works she has been doing and send Bill on a world tour....

So, whatcha gonna do afta NAFTA?
Bill created it, she can't duck it.
It's cost us jobs. That's what you call - real.
The differences between Obama and Clinton's health care plans were gone over finely in the last debate.
So what's the buzz if it's in print?
She reminds me of Mrs. Cheney calling Mr. Kerry a bad man for talking about the Cheney's gay daughter in a positive way.
Like, duh?
For all of you for whom Mrs. Clinton may be your candidate, you'd better get to her campaign office quick before it gets worse and tell them that her conduct of late is far from pretty.
Meltdowns are certainly not presidential.
I can just picture her giving some State of the Union address with the pointing and the scowling and the frowning and telling Congress "shame on you."
Dear God, lift us higher.

Hillary is bringing up Karl Rove when the American Leadership Project is running anti Obama ads just as Hillary is low on money for ads? This after Bill's negative attacks? This after Hillary's campaign shoved Chelsea out on the road and planted a question in the crowd?

Clinton Snap:
Outright outrage. The difference between this primary and previous ones is, issues are simplistically laid out, especially through Obama. Previously, issues were grandiously presented: Universal health Care...without further explainations or interpretations. This is but the second time that the Clintons Snaped. In Newhamshire Bill acted similarly. Woo'oh! But the explanation on the flayer had been given out by Obama in many occasions, even at the Texas debate almost verbatim. Are we sure Clinton is reacting to the mailer?

The newspaper in question "New York Newsday" has already issued a statement that Obama was being misleading concerning this 2006 article on NAFTA.
"Obama's use of the citation in this way does strike us as misleading. The quote marks make it look as if Hillary said "boon," not us. It's an example of the kind of slim reeds campaigns use to try to win an office.
That said, we should have been clearer." Read the entire response from Newsday at:

Lets talk about "affordable" there are already gov. programs for low income families. yes the income levels really need to be looked at.
But the middle class always gets screwed. I currently pay $600/month for family insurance on my own since i am self employed.
I would not qualify for subsidies under hillary's or Obamas plan.
If i have to pay full price i should also have the choice to buy or not to buy.
In the state of MA where healthcare is forced, the cheapest plan for people who make over 68K per year is $645/month.
So in a state were healthcare is suppose to be affordable and reduced cost there cheapest plan is $48 more than my plan???
How many middle class families right now who do not have insurance can afford that?
I am sorry but I am not going to be forced to buy anything! We are in America and we are FREE, we are not socialist controlled by the government!

We need to remain focus. Obama is behind in the poll in both Texas and in Ohio. In addition to that, Hillary is attempting to manipulate the media by saying that the Obama campaign went negative. The truth is that the Obama campaign is just trying to show the difference between the two health care plans. The one presented by Hillary has a mandated clause, similar to the health care plan initiated by the previous republican governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney.
Hillary’s health care makes it mandatory for every one to purchase health care insurance. And if residents do not have enough money to buy health insurance after putting food on the table, then they would have to pay a fine. Here is the choice of paying for your heating bill or stay cold during in the Northeast.
What’s make Hillary so angry is that the Obama’s campaign just clarified what her plan is all about. The truth is out, and people will soon notice the real difference. Many American did not really understand its contents. Most Americans were under the impression that the so-called universal health care was going to be a mandatory plan given by the government to cover all American. Instead it is just the opposite. Everyone would be forced to honor the old plan of the previous republican governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney. You buy health insurance or you pay a fine

If Obama's flyers are wrong, misleading, or blatantly false then she should simply tell the public why they are wrong and win the argument. Modern public debate seems to revolve around an accusation followed by little more than a response of "That's a lie". Just point out the difference, or the inaccuaracies and win the clash. No-one has ever beaten me in an argument by saying... "Rubbish!!".

You Obamatrons are foolish. Please visit Detroit and then say what black leadership will do for this country. Detroit imploded under black leadership and has never been able to recover. Is that what you want for America?
There is nothing wrong with Hillary being angry about him spreading misconceptions regarding her platform!
Hillary is the most intelligent and qualified candidate.

Those health care mailers were out WEEKS ago. As in the beginning of February. Her campaign moaned and complained about them back then. And NOW she pretends to suddenly feel surprised & upset about it?
Her "outrage" was pure theater, nothing more. She's desperately trying to put on a front before she's rolled over in Texas and Ohio and is forced out of the race.
I can only hope she didn't pay Mark Penn as much for this strategy as she paid him for "Change you can Xerox".

It's about time Hillary was exposed for the kind of hypocritical bender of truth that she is. She has been in the pockets and lobbyists and special interests. No wonder she refuses to release her tax and white house records. America has had enough with her kind of divisive polarizing politics. We've had enough with 20 years of Clintons and Bushes. It's time for REAL change!! It's time to put Americans first!!!
Vote for REAL change! Vote for Obama!

Aw, gosh, we thought Hillary was being so nice when she said how honored she was to be on stage with Senator Obama! Gee whiz, she was being a real team player and so sweet we applauded her for giving up the game graciously to the better candidate. Then, after showing how she has taken the high ground, she goes ballistic on an Obama mailer that had been out for a week. "Shame!" she cries furiously, how negative of Obama!! Yet it is HER continuous negative politics of smear, slime and personal destruction that have led the voters to say to her and her surrogates, "Have you no shame?" As someone somewhere said, "Here we go again!" Hillary has heard the voters loud and clear, that we do not like negative campaigning, so she is attempting to smear Obama now as the negative candidate. Hillary's manipulative and calculating tactics are so transparent that her campaign will go down in US history as a prime example of failure, incompetence, waste and arrogance. This is the time when the nation says, "Enough of treating the citizens as if we were dummies! Go play your hardball dumb-ball in another park."

PFFFFTTT!
Oh please - Clinton advisers were complaining about the healthcare mailer back in January, see the link: www.youdecide08.foxnews.com/2008/02/01/clinton-advisers-blast-obama-mailer-on-health-care-plan/
Also, she has been vague about the issue of how she will get people to pay their health insurance: http://abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/story?id=4235448
She says that it is untrue, that she will not enforce payment on those who can't afford to buy it - so please explain Mrs Clinton - how this will be avoided? And don't just say that the income cap system will be sufficient - because it won't. What if someone comes to you and says - look I'm on this income level, but there is no way I can pay for this because of my outgoings? What will YOU DO in that situation? Put that question to her in the Ohio debate.
And for those who want to know what a false mailer really is, I suggest you listen to Lorna Howard:

Now I believe everyone found the true colors of Clintons! They are hypocrite. She has done all the negative ads against Barack Obama for weeks. Now he just did one ad, and you guys saw her reactions. Shame on you Clintons!
Posted by: Shaheed Ahmed | February 24, 2008 2:21 AM
This is classic, i'll tell you what. Everything in the mailers was correct. Everything. If he would have added something about her plan not offering financial help, then it wouldn't have been correct, but he didn't.
FACT: She has supported NAFTA since the early 90's.
FACT: Her plan does impose mandates on PEOPLE, not government, and would have to force folks to pay some kind of a penalty if they don't get insurance.
This makes no sense. As Obama has said, people don't have insurance because they can't afford it, not because they don't want it. Yes, we can mandate it, but what's that going to do if the cost isn't under control?
For the record, Obama's plan does the most the lower costs. It does more than Hillary's, and much more than the Huckster's and McCain's.
It is absolutely hypocritical of her to engage in such actions as she did today. She has been attacking Obama, relentlessly, since the JJ Dinner in IA, over 100 days ago. This includes a completely factually incorrect MAILER in NH about Obama's stance on choice.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

Hillary Clinton Flip-Flops on NAFTA - Meet The Press
http://youtube.com/watch?v=QJ0swdRvYgw
How many bad judgements does it take? First the Iraq war. That cost us half a trillion... so far. Now NAFTA. That cost us millions and millions of job, devastated middle class salaries and squeezed the middle class towards poor. How many more? Is the mandates of health care next? Another war?
How many bad judgements does it take for Hillary supporters to see that she is the WRONG person to be president? How many?
20 years of Clintons and Bushes were enough!!! Our country can not take any more of their kind of bad judgement, divisive, polarizing, lobbyist and special interest driven politics any more! Time for REAL change and bringing the country back together!

Go back and listen to the tape, replay the DVD, request the transcript...do whatever, but face the fact that SHE SAID WHAT SHE SAID! IT'S THAT SIMPLE!!!
IS she Bi-Polar...or What!!??
Just stop this foolishness...Please! for the sake of the American people.
And, by the way how about her being specific on exactly what it is that she's done for poor familes all these years...alot of talk and no real proof...to coin a phrase..."Where's the Beef?"

Detroit declined because the US auto industry WOULD not compete with Japan on mileage and COULD not on quality. And the heads of US industry are A) white guys, and B) more powerful than any mayor. So please, try to restrain your racism.
As far as NAFTA is concerned, it was supported by the establishments of both the Democrats and the Republicans, because it was supported by the corporate elite, who wanted to ship their factories to low wage Mexico, where genuinely free labor unions are almost as difficult to sustain as in China. Will either Democrat now proclaim that they will not grant "free trade" to nations which don't allow free unions? I'm waiting. Senator Clinton however, having supported NAFTA as late as 2004, is less credible on the issue, and should know better than to use it as an attack item.

Such contrived, hypocritical non-factual outrage -- I think she deserves an OSCAR tomorrow in LA where she and Bill can hang out with the rich, worthless Hollywood types.
And the super-delegates that have ALREADY declared are polar-opposite in count of the ELECTED delegates -- this is the "democratic" party and why is no one in the media reporting that with OUTRAGE ?? God help America.

I'm about to get blasted by everyone here by saying first that I'm a Republican. I post mainly so everyone here can hear a comment from the other side, not to get blasted for my views. So, I first became aware of politics when Clinton the First (and hopefully last) has just come into office. Needless to say, I did not approve. I admit I'm very disappointed in the manner the country has been run, but one look at Hillary, and I run back to Republican land. I'm sorry Democrats, but if she's the standard, I'm out.

Hillary Clinton, it's time you gave up. We know you want it badly, 8 more years in the white house, but America can't afford it. You, Bill, Bush, Cheney, and all your lobbyist loving friends have made your fortunes on the backs of hard working honest people. As first lady you screwed us by making us think you wanted universal health care but you really didn't because you have so many corporate friends making a killing on us in the medical/pharmaceutical sector. The you screwed us again, this time as Senator, by voting "YES" for the Iraq war. Yes, it's the Iraq war where your corporate war friends are making a killing - they say over one trillion $'s. Of course everyone is saying the "Super Delegates" might pull through for you so there's still a chance you'll get to screw us a third time or more!

For those of you not paying attention, just before Feb 5th, Hillary DID SAY on ABC News she would have to go after peoples' wages to enforce her mandate. In debates she has refused to say this because she knows the backlash it would have.
Obama's mailers are dead on. She has made the "mandate" the center point of her campaign. These mailers combined with NAFTA blowback are what got her whipped in Wisconsin.
These are pathetic theatrics. She talks real tough with the "Meet me in TX" and "Meet me in OH" crap, but seems scared to actually express outrage to Obama's face.
Oscar for Best Supporting Actress goes to Hillary Clinton.

As I recall, Al Gore defended and advocated the passage of NAFTA. I hope Mr. Obama doesn't go around and say " How can you trust AL Gore about global warning when he was so wrong about NAFTA". Barack Obama has the luxury of being judgemental because he was never called on to cast a real vote.

Sen. Barack Obama's absence from yesterday's annual State of Black America Issues forum shows his, glaring and obvious, disinterest in the plight of New Orleans and Louisiana now of course that he has their votes. We see once he gets the votes, this is what he actually does with them. Is anyone even paying attention to Obama's actual actions instead of the stolen words of other men he exploits in his speeches? It's not the first time Obama has done this, or been AWOL when his voice was required. Look at his missed Senate voting record and last years black Issues forum, he skipped that one too. What does this tell you? Observe and learn. When the man shows no interest in such a seriously injured area of our nation, it is time to be very concerned. Hillary obviously feels different, she made sure she was there, the only candidate for that matter to attend this crucially important Black Issues forum, bottom line. This is why time and again I say, Obama is a huge gamble and Hillary is the one we can trust to be there for us time and again and this is a time with America so deep in the hole, we seriously cannot afford to be gambling.

Please concede for the good of the party this race for the WH that you have lost. No amount of nipping and tucking will bail you out of the current situation--the American people are fed up of your type of politics. And more importantly, there is a growing weariness for you and your once beloved spouse. It's as if you're trying to fracture the Democratic party, since they won't let you seize power you're quite happy to see the entire party's chances go down the toilet. SHAME ON YOU!

I thought the Rovian trick was to go after someone strength and destroy/defeat them with the tactic. If what the Obama campaign has been accused of as being Rovian, then what was the strength being attacked? Surely neither truthfulness nor health-care are strengths of the Clintons. During their eight wearisome years in charge, they promised but never delivered on health-care. Now they have devised a scheme to ensure everyone purchases private insurance and declare that to be mandatory. Now, every mandatory rule laid out by our government goes along with specific penalties should the rule be broken. So, what is the furore about over the Obama campaign making it clear to the Ohio voters, the differences between his plan and that of his Democratic opponent?
Please, go away already.

High-Noon Hillary?
Now she swaggers: "Meet me in Ohio?"
What, is she threatening to punch Barack Obama's lights out?
What happened to the new "new Hillary" of couple of days ago?
(Of is it the new, new "new Hillary"--so many changes in personality it is hard to remember the iterations.)
Feigning outrage over a tempest in a teapot like she does doesn't seem very wise.
Especially when her own campaign's wheels are falling off, with revelations of Pharaonic spending by aides and other wasting of campaign resources.
And now, Ralph Nader announces he is running for president.
Against Obama he can probably shave just a point or two in the general election, but not throw the election to the GOP.
Against Hillary and the politics of special interest (look at the lobbyists et al who subsidized her campaign's Pharaonic spending)it will be like shooting fish in a barrel.
Let's restore integrity to the Democratic Party and sanity to the country.
That means staying the course with Barack Obama.
