The Swamp

by Jim Tankersley and Jill Zuckman

Democrats have a long way to go for a consensus presidential nominee, but Republicans in Washington appear increasingly convinced their November opponent will be Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

At a Capitol Hill press conference this morning with House Republican leaders, presumptive GOP nominee John McCain laid the groundwork for a possible Obama matchup in his speech today - echoing his tactics from Tuesday night, in a victory speech following his sweep of the Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia primaries.

For months, Republicans talked like Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) was a lock for the Democratic nod. Now, said Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) "most folks (in the House GOP conference) think this is going to be McCain versus Obama."

McCain said voters would see a stark contrast between him and the Democratic nominee, regardless of who it is. Of Obama's speeches, he said, "They are singularly lacking in specifics." And he added, "It's not an accident that he has, according to the National Journal, one of the most liberal voting records in the Senate."

That is something McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told reporters he wondered whether voters actually knew.

"I don't know if all 17,000 people at his rally last night knew that about him, but they will," Davis promised.

John McCain, you don't give any specifics either. They are campaign speeches for cripes sake.

Get specific John; which countries are we attacking? How many jobs are permanently going away?

Obama; respond immediately.

Obama has plenty of specifics, and was giving them out freely back last summer if anyone remembers. However, the media and people were reacting to inspiration not issues, so that's what he's given them. Apparently, what America needs right now is hope, but when it comes time to deliver, he's got policies to back it up.

"More war, less jobs" vs. "liberal"? That's a tough one Rick.

Brilliant comment C. Morris. I just realized how the republican process thinks. McCain twiddle de doo.

Looks like the republicans won't unite behind the "we can't have another Clinton in the White house because we tried to destroy them before but failed miserably so we can't fail agian" slogan.

Lets see what Whitewater tactic they pull out of their youknowwhat to leach onto Obama.

By the way, how much did those investigations cost agianst the Clinton's? What did you get out of it?

Nitpick alert: it's homing in on.

Obama is riding a wave of black racism based on skin color, supported by left-wing liberals. He will be an easy takedown for Republicans.

Bring it on, old man McCain!

Senator John McCain presents himself as a maverick and a critic of the Iraq war. But a close read of his record indicates that his position on the Iraq war has consistently matched President George W. Bush’s.

Before The War:

McCain used many of the same arguments as Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Cheney and President Bush when advocating going to war with Iraq.

McCain co-sponsored the Use of Force Authorization that gave President George W. Bush the green light – and a blank check - for going to war with Iraq. [SJ Res 46, 10/3/02]

McCain argued Saddam was “a threat of the first order.” Senator McCain said that a policy of containing Iraq to blunt its weapons of mass destruction program is "unsustainable, ineffective, unworkable and dangerous." McCain: "I believe Iraq is a threat of the first order, and only a change of regime will make Iraq a state that does not threaten us and others, and where liberated people assume the rights and responsibilities of freedom.” [Speech to the Center for Strategic & International Studies, 2/13/03]

McCain echoed Bush and Cheney’s rationale for going to war. McCain: “It’s going to send the message throughout the Middle East that democracy can take hold in the Middle East.” [Fox, Hannity & Colmes, 2/21/03]

McCain echoed Bush and Cheney’s talking points that the U.S. would only be in Iraq for a short time. McCain: “It’s clear that the end is very much in sight. … It won’t be long…it’ll be a fairly short period of time.” [ABC, 4/9/03]

McCain said winning the war would be “easy.” “I know that as successful as I believe we will be, and I believe that the success will be fairly easy, we will still lose some American young men or women.” [CNN, 9/24/02]

During The War:

Senator McCain praised Donald Rumsfeld as late as May 12, 2004, after the Abu Ghraib scandal.

Asked if Donald Rumsfeld can continue to be an effective secretary of defense, McCain: “Yes, today I do and I believe he's done a fine job. He's an honorable man.” [Hannity and Colmes, 5/12/04]

Senator McCain repeatedly supported President Bush on the Iraq War – voting with him in the Senate, defending his actions and publicly praising his leadership.

McCain maintains the war was a good idea.

At the 2004 Republican National Convention, McCain, focusing on the war in Iraq, said that while weapons of mass destruction were not found, Saddam once had them and “he would have acquired them again.” McCain said the mission in Iraq “gave hope to people long oppressed” and it was “necessary, achievable and noble.” McCain: “For his determination to undertake it, and for his unflagging resolve to see it through to a just end, President Bush deserves not only our support, but our admiration.” [Plain Dealer, 8/31/04]

Senator McCain: “The war, the invasion was not a mistake. [Meet the Press, 1/6/08]

Asked if the war was a good idea worth the price in blood and treasure, McCain: “It was worth getting rid of Saddam Hussein. He had used weapons of mass destruction, and it's clear that he was hell-bent on acquiring them.” [Republican Debate, 1/24/08]

McCain defended Bush’s rationale for war. Asked if he thought the president exaggerated the case for war, McCain said, “I don’t think so.” [Fox News, 7/31/03]

McCain has been President Bush’s most ardent Senate supporter on Iraq. According to Michael Shank of the Foreign Policy in Focus think tank, McCain was at times Bush’s “most solid support in the Senate” on Iraq. [Foreign Policy in Focus, 1/15/08]

McCain voted against holding Bush accountable for his actions in the war. McCain opposed the creation of an independent commission to investigate the development and use of intelligence leading up to the war in Iraq. [S. Amdt. 1275 to H.R. 2658, Vote # 284, 7/16/03]

McCain praised Bush’s leadership on the war. McCain: “I think the president has led with great clarity and I think he’s done a great job leading the country…” [MSNBC, Hardball, 4/23/03]

Senator McCain has constantly moved the goal posts of progress for the war – repeatedly saying it would be over soon.

January 2003: “But the point is that, one, we will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” [MSNBC, 1/22/03]

March 2003: “I believe that this conflict is still going to be relatively short.” [NBC, Meet the Press, 3/30/03]

June 2004: “The terrorists know that this is a very critical time.” [CNN, 6/23/04]

December 2005: "Overall, I think a year from now, we will have a fair amount of progress [in Iraq] if we stay the course.” [The Hill, 12/8/05]

November 2006: “We’re either going to lose this thing or win this thing within the next several months." [NBC, Meet the Press, 11/12/06]

Senator McCain opposed efforts to end the overextension of the military that is having a devastating impact on our troops.

McCain voted against requiring mandatory minimum downtime between tours of duty for troops serving in Iraq. [S. Amdt.. 2909 to S Amdt. 2011 to HR 1585, Vote 341, 9/19/07; S Amdt. 2012 to S Amdt. 2011 to HR 1585, Vote #241, 7/11/07]

McCain was one of only 13 senators to vote against adding $430 million for inpatient and outpatient care for veterans. [S Amdt. 3642 to HR 4939, Vote 98, 4/26/06]

Senator McCain has consistently opposed any plan to withdraw troops from Iraq

Senator McCain repeatedly voted against a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq. [S. Amdt. 3876 to S.Amdt. 3874 to H.R. 2764, Vote #438, 12/18/07; S.Amdt.. 3875 to S.Amdt.. 3874 to H.R. 2764, Vote # 437, 12/18/07; S.Amdt.3164 to H.R. 3222, Vote # 362, 10/3/07; S.Amdt. 2898 to S.Amdt. 2011 to H.R. 1585, Vote #346, 9/21/07; S.Amdt. 2924 to S.Amdt.. 2011 to H.R.1585, Vote #345, 9/21/07; S.Amdt.2 087 to S.Amdt. 2011 to H.R. 1585, Vote #252, 7/18/07; S.Amdt. 643 to H.R. 1591, Vote #116, 3/27/07; S.Amdt. 4320 to S. 2766, Vote #182, 6/22/06; S.Amdt. 4442 to S. 2766, Vote #181, 6/22/06; S.Amdt.. 2519 to S.1042, Vote # 322, 11/15/05]

Senator McCain has consistently demonized Americans who want to find a responsible way to remove troops from Iraq so that we can take the fight to al Qaeda.

McCain: "I believe to set a date for withdrawal is to set a date for surrender.” [Charlotte Observer, 9/16/07]

McCain called proponents of a congressional resolution opposing the troop surge in Iraq intellectually dishonest. [Associated Press. 2/4/07]

The Future:

Senator McCain now says he sees no end to the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq.

McCain: "[M]ake it a hundred" years in Iraq and "that would be fine with me." [Derry, New Hampshire Town Hall meeting, 1/3/08]

McCain on how long troops may remain in Iraq: “A thousand years. A million years. Ten million years. It depends on the arrangement we have with the Iraqi government.” [Associated Press, 1/04/08]

It didn't work when Hillary lied about Obama, but maybe it will when McCain tries the same lies.

People who can read go to the candidates web sites and see what they say there. LOTS of specifics on Obama's website. There are specifics on McCains too. Shows he wants to do exactly the same things Bush did that are currently driving our economy into the ground.

Mr. McCain, thank you for your past service to the country, but as you said yourself, you don't really understand the economy...and it shows.

C.Morris, YOU just do not get it. You wasted your vote on a William Jennings Bryan an orator, lawyer that ran 3 times for President and lost 3 times. BO is an orator that was President of Harvard Law Review (a cut and paste artist).
Are you actually blind to reality. Our Country is in a fragile position, huge deficits due to Iraq, our dollar is sinking and you vote for a rock star.
You seem to be hell bent on destroying our country. I resent that it is my country, my childrens country and my future grandchildrens country. Sadly without Hillary Clinton McCain will win and everybody in our country suffers.

The accomplishments John McCain has done in his life are much, much more than Obama will ever do in his lifetime.
Let's all face it, Obama is an empty suit, has a silver tounge and he's an admitted illegal drug user.

Paulo

Perhaps we should count our blessings on this. A McCain vs. Obama contest might not be so bad. My only reservation is, that I don't know where either candidate really stands on the issues at hand. All I have to go on is what the media is telling me.

I so enjoyed reading this article. The Republicans, thinking all this time it would be a race against the Clintons, leaves them unprepared to face a serious contender. With all the dirt they already have on the Clintons, it should have been an easy fight. They probably felt they could simply rehash the scandal years and people would remember some not so pleasant stuff.

Now, here comes good old Sen. Obama upsetting their apple cart. Guess the Republicans will need to spend their time now coming up with a new plan. It looks like Clinton bashing won’t be enough to take the White House. With Barack as the nominee, its gonna be a completely new ball game.

As far as the 17,000 people at Sen. Obama’s campaign rally, I would be willing to wager they understand his stand on the issues far better than any of us understand your’s, Mr. McCain.

Oh, and by the way,

Barack Obama as the son of an immigrant father who left his family when he was two years old has overcome incredible odds. He is a man of obvious intellect and integrity. A fresh breeze to do away with the sixteen years of stank in the White House we have suffered through. Yes the Clinton years were better than the Bush ones but should we be proud of Bill? He left and the democrats lost the House of Representatives, the Senate and of course the White House. Not so great a legacy verdad?

Vote for Obama and our country will be viewed with respect again around the world and we will use our treasure for good like education, health care, and Americas infrastructure.

We are spilling blood daily and spending our hard owned cash in massive amounts for a war that should never have been fought. I am a Cuban American U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, my grandfather fought in WW1 and my son fought in Iraq. Barack Obama has it right that our enemies were right were we needed them in Afghanistan and we let them get away and now they are getting stronger regardless of what George W. And his surge b.s. tell you. Guns vs butter plain and simple. We need to vote for change before we are totally broke both financially and morally.

From a mixed racial background to President of the Harvard law review, to community organizer, to U.S. Senator, to President of the United States. This story is the American Dream in real life. These are my opinions and I am sticking to them!

I am a Latino democrat and if Obama, Mr. Snakeoil two-face, is the deomcratic nominee, I will vote for McCain and so will many of my Latino friends.

The Wingnuts are scared to death of Barack Obama and they should be, the Dems are stoked and they're voting in twice the numbers that the Rethugs are and old man McCain is about as exciting and inspiring as watching paint dry.

About that headline: I know what it is to "home in." Guided missiles and homing pigeons do that. And I know what it is to "hone" a knife, or one's technique. But what, exactly, does it mean to be "honing in?" Is this (admittedly widespread) illiteracy now an accepted usage among news copy editors?

Obama has no chance.

He's only been competitive against Hillary because he played slash-and-burn, dividing his own party down the middle and attacking her with character digs; if he was as clean as he pretends he'd still be 20 points down in the polls. As we saw the double-standards are such that no Democrat - especially a woman - can fight back against him without getting branded.

Guess what: McCain's not a Democrat, and his base will love it if you try to paint him as attacking. Obama's poke-and-duck formula won't work against McCain's grit. And all of Obama's flaws - and their are many - will be cruelly exposed and middle America will wonder who those moony-like nuts were who nominated this guy.

What a shame, and what a lot of noise.

There's still time, Democrats, to pick a fighter whose immunity to this has been built up for 16 years, and who's shown she can win -real- races in New York (unlike Obama's cakewalks in Illinois). Or... you can pick the handsome man with the glass jaw and see what happens against the war hero.

If "Obama is not specific enough" is the best McCain has, he's in serious trouble.

Less than 24 hours after sweeping the Potomac Primaries, Obama laid out an extremely detailed economic plan to create 2 million new construction jobs while simultaneously safeguarding the environment. That's a win-win for everyone.

McCain is an American hero, like Obama said in Madison. But he doesn't stand a chance against the political and generational force that Obama is quickly becoming.

Against Clinton, however...

Congrats, President McCain. Please don't do anything terrifying.

Interesting. Same old Republican smear campaign gearing up. When will Senator McCain realize that old game is over, that the electorate wants something very different?

If voters wanted more of the same, Senator Hillary Clinton would have won the Democratic nomination already by a landslide. But it went the opposite way after Bill and Hillary's attack and smear campaign in South Carolina.

I believe that this time millions upon million of our young voters will come to vote, and they will vote their conscience. If Senator John McCain and Senator Hillary Clinton do not understand this phenomenon and keep away from nasty attack campaigns, rest assured Senator Barack Obama will not only win the Democratic nomination, but he will go on to become President with a landslide.

Maybe that will be a very good thing for the country.

I will take liberal voting over 100 years of war every time. Senator McCain, go back to Florida, I am sure some retirement home will elect you as their President.

McCain has a history of contention with Obama going back two years, over ethics reform.

Obama has handled this with his signature style of intellect, humor and grace--an excellent indicator of an *actual* change of tone in Washington, a change that has already begun. This is just one of the many factors that inspires the genuine enthusiasm and large crowds at rallies.

If you haven't been able to make it to a rally, or have and experienced it, you can get the entire Obama rally setlist at ITunes--all the way from U2's "City of Blinding Lights", to which Obama takes the stage, to the Obama victory anthem "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" here:

Yes, McCain, how many more countries are you going to attack?

Will there be a war tax?

If not, how do you plan to pay for all your wars...more borrowing?

Let's not forget that Republicans put us in this hole, and McCain just wants to keep digging.

C. Morris,

Absolutely!

But not to worry.

Barack and his staff haven't forgotten how the Swift Boat liars gained cred when John Kerry didn't respond quickly and forcefully enough when he was vilified by the Republican Scum Machine.

!GOBAMA!

McCain said voters would see a stark contrast between him and the Democratic nominee,

What will be hard to find is the difference between McCain and Bush. 4 more years, 4 more years.

I am a Latino democrat and if Obama, Mr. Snakeoil two-face, is the deomcratic nominee, I will vote for McCain and so will many of my Latino friends.

Posted by: Raoul | February 14, 2008 1:03 AM

Yes Raoul (if thats your real name)the republican party will be best for you.

McCain railed in 2001 against the same Bush tax cuts he now wants to make permanent. He was so disgusted he almost switched parties. The man has flip flopped so many times on so many issues nobody really knows what he stands for. He probably doesn't himself.

Whether you like it or not, Obama has proven himself a brilliant campaigner and an effective senator. He's going to be a great president just when this country desperately needs a great president. We don't have any more time or money to waste
on foolhardly destructive Republican policies and another retread politician.

Hillary stood up and cheered when Bush said the surge is working. She said she believes in "coercive diplomacy". McCain is trying to reclaim the honor he thinks he lost in Vietnam and wants to occupy Iraq for 100 years. Neither of these people seem to understand that the
Red Chinese, Saudis and Putin also believe
in coercive diplomacy and our military and economy are in no shape to coerce anyone right now.

We need to change that mindset. Electing Obama will be a start.

Oh man. McCain is going to lose to Obama oh so badly. The debates are going to be painful to watch...for Republicans.

I already see a stark contrast between McCain and Obama. Obama has introduced an economic plan. McCain wants to keep the Bush plan in place. Obama's principles have not been compromised. McCain's has. A critic of how the Iraq war was fought, McCain now wants to stay their for the next 100 years. McCain voted FOR waterboarding, although he endured torture at the Hanoi Hilton. You would think that his war experience would dictate his policy stances, but unfortunately, his politics does. The Republican machine is just getting warmed up, but the Clinton Campaign is not done yet. Sometimes I think the Clintons and Republicans deserve each other--they seem to relish who can get in the dirtiest shot. Obama has changed the dynamics of this race; he knows that every thing including the kitchen sink has and will be thrown at him. The difference between the Clintons and the Republicans, however, is the duration of their attacks. The Clintons should know: Ken Starr dogged them for years.

Paulo,

You and virtually the rest of the GOPPERs posting here (with the exception of John W.) are so many chickenhawks.

And there's no way your hero Dubya would be any where near where he is if his family wasn't who they are.

Como se dice "Would you like fries with that?"

The more I hear about Obama the more I get nervous about this guy. It's amazing that the media doesn't want to cover more detail about him. I suppose we are too apathetic to care. We just want a entertaining actor in chief like Obama. The ambiguity with which Obama addresses issues reminds me a lot of Bush. Then again, that may be what we want.

"Obama's plan today is the most shameless piece of potential plagiarism that I have ever seen," McCain economic advisor Kevin Hassett said.

"He basically took Clinton's words and Clinton's policies and called them his own," Hassett said. "If I were a professor I'd give him an F and try to get him kicked out of school for something this terrible ... I remember Mrs. Clinton saying shared prosperity and I remember the bill that she introduced in August for infrastructure. The fact is these are things Obama has taken as his own without crediting the source of the ideas which was Mrs. Clinton."

On another note, I wonder what affect it would have on our society if President Obama decides to revert to Islam, the faith of his father, one day. How would that affect us? Would it affect us? I don't think that question has ever been posed. Both of his fathers were Muslim and so is his brother. He is said to have had deep admiration for his brother when he formally started practicing Islam. I think these are questions most Americans care about but we've never really had to confront before now.

Regarding the accusation that 'Bama is just a good speaker; If Churchill spoke like GWB we would all be speaking German right now.

For a leader to, well, lead he or she must speak in a compelling, coherent manner, the message must be clear and understandable, in correct English.

Talk about empty rhetoric, that's what McCain and his advisers are doing. Yes the voters know about his voting record, it is public you know, yes they know about his policies, he speaks about them all the time, the voters know. Where has John McCain and his advisers been, sleeping under a rock? Maybe they should actually go to one of Obama's town halls or something or check out his website rather than spew out their false rhetoric.

JOHN McCAIN has lived off his 2nd wife's money and whatever he could cadge from lobbyists in 'toxic-dump' WASHINGTON. His less than notable record in CONGRESS includes McCAIN/FEINGOLD(a law that limits 'free speech'), McCAIN/KENNEDY(a law that would/will allow AMNESTY for ILLEGALS), scandals among the ‘KEATING S&L fraud’ andhas initiated the 'gang of 14' which curtails SENATORIAL RULES by vitiating mandates, has voted twice against making tax-cuts permanent while garnering millions of dillars for his own 'pork' bills!!! McCAIN became unhinged - pushing/shoving MARIA SHRIVER filling the air with curses/threats – ‘don't believe me’ - check out the videotape of this disgusting instance?! Also was-or-was not McCAIN a 'RAT' to his fellow POW's in a NVIETNAMESE prison??? TIME FOR SOME 'STRAIGHT-TALK' YOU OLD FOOLISH FRAUD!!!

McCain and his Republican machine is going to have so much Media support and they are going to twist the truth on Obama so bad, he want be able to handle it. He'll be explaining lies because the media will know the it's a lie, but will feed it to Obama to discredit or defend. That is a perilous situation to be in. I can't believe the Right wingers. Did anyone notice McCain with a backdrop of American Flags all around him.

Oh, Cara, this is just priceless. And the fact that it comes on a blog wherein we hear daily all about how people are supporting Obama, not because he is a phenomenon or because he makes people "feel good," but because they've done such "in-depth research" into his stances on real issues. So tell us, Cara, which of Obama's positions you like -- besides the good taste in music and unquestionable showmanship?

Oh, and re: Obama's economic announcement in Wisconsin Wednesday:
He said he proposes to pay for his government-run programs by ending the Iraq war, eliminating tax breaks on corporations, taxing carbon emissions and raising taxes on high income earners. My question is: How many jobs will be ELIMINATED because Obama will eliminate corporate tax breaks, tax carbon emissions and raise taxes on high income earners? I bet it's a wash. But at least the money will go to the "right" places, eh? And we'll feel better about ourselves? Yes, We Can!

McCain is foolish to seek specifics from Obama, because he's going to get them.

And when he does, the public will get to compare the two. McCain will offer endless war, fear, torture, tax cuts for the wealthy and austerity for the masses. Whatever Obama offers will be much more appealing.

Obama will offer a bowl of fresh cherries. McCain will offer a bowl of stale gruel. This is not the sort of comparison that McCain ought to invite.

Since I'm for Obama, though, I can only hope that McCain ignores this advice.

:

It's appropriate to scrutinize Obama. What's not appropriate is to consider it a fault that he has superior speaking abilities. To the contrary, it's a good thing.

Blinky ,

This gonna be good..

Oh Please, Clinton is old and stale and part of the "experienced" establishment that has us in this mess. She can't even run a campaign much less this country. get used to President Obama! McCain is a low C student who had to be dragged out of the naval academy. Let's put a smart person in the White house and his name is Obama.
