by Mark Silva
After the smoke cleared at the Conservative Political Action Conference – the public withdrawal of Mitt Romney from the Republican presidential race, and the attempt of John McCain to make friends with the party’s staunchest conservatives – a conservative crowd-pleaser stepped forward .
Ron Paul, the Republican representative from Texas.
Paul was playing on the frustrations in this hall, with many voicing worries about McCain, the all-but annointed nominee.
Now the party has an apparent candidate who is a friend of Sen. Russ Feingold – on campaign finance reform – Paul said. And now the party has an apparent candidate who is a friend of Ted Kennedy – on immigration – Paul said.
He raised cheers in the hall – perhaps the first genuine cheers of the day.
“If you think we can lead this country back to conservative principles… you have another thing coming, because it’s not going to happen,’’ Paul said.
“The answer is found in fiscal conservatism – live within our means,’’ he said to cheers in the hall.
“As long as a government can stir up fear, sometimes real and sometimes not real, the people are expected to do one thing, sacrifice their liberty,’’ he said to cheers.
And then there is the war in Iraq, with Paul the only one of several Republican candidates for president this year who took a stance against the war.
.
“McCain says we should stay there for 100 years if necessary – I say there is no need,’’ Paul said to more cheers in the hall.
“We campaigned in 2000 for a humble foreign policy, no policing of the world – and now we are doing the very same thing,’’ Paul said.
But this is where he started to lose his audience: “Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.’’
The Paulites in the hall were happy, but the rest of the crowd was starting to part ways with a Republican who has sharply parted ways with most of the candidates.
Yet, while the Romney folds his tent, the Paul campaign carries on.

Comments
Yeah lots of republicans will vote for him. Sure. If only Ron Paul were friends with sanity.

I watched his speech, and I felt the same way- CPAC doesn't really seem to want McCain. It was nice to hear another voice and I hope that Paul and Huckabee continue to bring options so we don't get stuck with McWarMonger.
Posted by: Nathan | February 7, 2008 5:18 PM
Apparently Paul does not write out his speeches ahead of time and people don't review them and give him pointers otherwise he would not say the things he does. His campaign managers are as much to blame for his poor showing to date as the media (which has him in a blackout zone). And so the GOP nominee will be a pro-war nutjob that the Democrats will have a field day with.

John McBush has hoped aboard the "flip-flop express", now that Plastic Mitt is gone that makes McCain the biggest two-faced liar left in the Presidential race.

Hillary supporters must have showed up to give McCain some confidence.
Conservatives won't vote for him. Period.
Posted by: Flo | February 7, 2008 5:24 PM
Amazing how the media once again hasn't even mentioned Dr.Paul's speech.
One would think that we Americans should be shown ALL of the candidates, as opposed to being force fed the media's views.
Dr. Paul is the ONLY candidate who is talking about real changes as opposed to just spouting the word "change".

Some people will never want to believe the truth...
I used to believe the lies about Irag and 9/11 but after the big immigration/amnesty scam they tried to shove down our throats I started to open my eyes.
I now know who is speaking the truth and his name is Dr. Ron Paul!!
Posted by: Colette Meighan | February 7, 2008 5:24 PM
It will be good for Ron Paul to stick around and remind everyone of the traditional conservative values McCain has so such contempt for.
Posted by: John | February 7, 2008 5:25 PM
But Iraq didn't have anything to do with 9/11! Hopefully with Romney out of the race, more people will be able to hear what Ron Paul has to say. I doubt the MSM will change their ways but I have a bit of faith left in the citizens of America.
Posted by: Andrew | February 7, 2008 5:25 PM
Yeah well the truth is not always what you want to hear. THE WAR IN IRAQ HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11.
Bush said it himself in front of the entire world RIGHT HERE!
WAKE UP AMERICA!

I respect and admire Dr. Ron Paul and hope with everything I have he can win the general election.
Iraq DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH 9/11 ----So what was the problem with him saying that. It's been proven over and over there is/was no connection. Dr. Paul is the only one with enough nerve to state THE TRUTH.

Thank goodness there is someone left to vote for!
Go Ron Paul
Posted by: DenisL | February 7, 2008 5:35 PM
Thanks for posting a good article and allowing Dr. Paul to share some of his message. I appreciate it. If more people understood the fundamental issues tearing our country apart, they would be knocking down Dr. Paul's door.
Posted by: Voxdan | February 7, 2008 5:35 PM
It's obvious Paul is the only conservative running, but Bush made too many people believe that if they don't support the war in Iraq, they aren't Republicans. Pssssh!
Posted by: Jeremy | February 7, 2008 5:36 PM
Amen. Ron Paul was always the only Republican in the race. It's about time that some would pick up the message and support Dr. Paul. Look a little deeper and you'll see that he is right in regards to Iraq as well.

Now, the Republicans have a choice: either a Jesus-for- V.P. Preacher or a war-hungry Rambo (who comes pre-packaged with that one-time Liberal Democrat, then Independent, now Republican chickenhawk, Lieberman). Ron Paul is, and has been, the only rational choice for authentic no-war, small government, conservatives.
Posted by: L.Step | February 7, 2008 5:39 PM
What, that's it? Paul went on for a while after the Iraq/9-11 remarks, which were about in the middle of his speech. He picked up steam again, and seemed to regain the crowd long before his talk ended. ;)

go RON PAUL // YOU WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF UNITED STATES/// VOTE RON PAUL
Posted by: leon little | February 7, 2008 5:40 PM
Paul must stay in the race, and become a broker at the convention, for the purpose of thwarting the neocon plan to use McCain to gain the White House. He can only do so, if he remains a Republican.
Posted by: Greg B | February 7, 2008 5:42 PM
Ron Paul is more of a messenge then the messenger - liberty must prevail or else al qaeda won
Posted by: brettrix | February 7, 2008 5:44 PM
I do think that Dr. Paul needs to adjust his speeches to include smaller doses of reality. as long as we have the support of those who also want out of the war, it doesn't matter at this point whether we all agree on whether Iraq had it coming or not. Once he's president then it matters. But for now, I'd like to see our guy address more mainstream concerns as well, such as the solutions and how beneficial they would be. Being an economic expert himself, he may be caught up in his concerns that we understand the problem; but most people just want their heaters to work, they don't much care how they work. they want the good news that the cold is a thing of the past and will stay that way.
I'd love to see Napolitano hook up w/our doc. But what ever happens, I am with the guy to the bittersweet end...win or lose, he's on the right track and I want to be on the righteous and truly patriotic side of history when its all said and done.

This Republican Party must come to the realization that McCain or Huckabee will result in a devastating loss come November. We must reinvent the wheel if we don't want turn the American people into inept dependents of the nanny state. Ron is the only one who has a chance. That's the irony, that’s the slight of hand, that’s secret weapon, and Ron knows it. The party leaders are the ones who created the environment that has led to the average republican voting for people like McCain and Huckabee. They can either take the national defeat that will come from it, or they can get behind Paul. And when they do, they will see the party as a whole get behind Paul, turning away from socially conservative liberals like McCain and Huckabee. They have the power to flip this whole thing upside down, and it was obvious to me during Paul’s speech that he was gunning for exactly that. Paul's the only one who can steal Obama votes, and Hillary would be left with only a few social party members to support her after Paul pulls the moderate vote away from her. The American people want out of the war, and they want a real answer to the economy. The whole thing has Paul's name written all over it.
Posted by: Dan Hill | February 7, 2008 5:45 PM
Ron Paul is the ONLY conservative left. Huckabee is a fiscal liberal, and is McCain a conservative in anyway?
I can't see it!

It's important for Americans to take a long hard look at the whole Iraq War issue.
Ron Paul agrees that the War On Terror is a real threat however, Iraq is not our enemy, rather radical islam and it's supporters are so, It's important that we create a strategy that identfies who our enimies are, where they are, then go after them. This thing about "parking" our military in Iraq, as targets, rather than using our military to seek out and destroy our enemiy, is costing us lives, and money.
It's interesting how some Americans think that our Military is just something you can control based upon an emotional thought fueled by the corporate elite media.
America, ask yourself why more military men and women support Ron Paul than any other candidate. If you have a choice between listening to the men and women in the military who are in Iraq, rather than some politian, who ya' gonna choose ?
Wake up America, take a long hard look at our current strategy in Iraq, please !!

If the claims of "crazy" were real, I would ask why people question the sanity of Ron Paul and his supporters when all they are doing is saying "follow the law" (i.e., the Constitution). But the claims of "crazy" are not well-reasoned comments, they're just emotional vomit from people afraid to admit that, regardless of who wins or "can" win, Ron Paul is the only Republican candidate this year who really stands for honest Republican values.

Is the author Mr. Silva intimating that conservatives believe Iraq had something to do with "9/1" [sic]?
When the "crowd was starting to part ways" with Paul after his declaration that “Iraq had nothing to do with 9/1’’[sic] - is the assertion that the crowd believes otherwise?

This is where Mark Silva's reporting becomes an expression of his personal bias - "But this is where he started to lose his audience: “Iraq had nothing to do with 9/1’’ The Paulites in the hall were happy, but the rest of the crowd was starting to part ways with a Republican who has sharply parted ways with most of the candidates."
In fact, faced with 100 years in Iraq and the consequent certainty of a draft, this conservative audience was riveted to Dr. Paul's speech.

Mccain in WhiteHouse will only expedite the fall of US Empire in humiliating way that Bush initiated. After Fall of US Empire, the rest of the world will get chance to talk about the genocides US did in Iraq, Vietnam etc (Like World talks about Turkey's genocide in Armenia after so many years of fall of ottoman)....

From the beginning of this historic grassroots effort, through today, Dr. Ron Paul has shown that he is a true Patriot with fundamental beliefs that appear to be unwavering. He says he's a man of his convictions and has the track record (in politics and life) to support it.
My message and plea to Dr. Paul and all of the supporters of this movement would be to stay the course, because if we don't our opportunity to have an impact on American history will be lost. I speak from the learned experience of being a delegate at the Missouri state convention, for Pat Buchanan in 1996, and the total loss of hope in and respect for someone I believed to be a man of 'conviction'. Mr. Buchanan "threw in the towel" and surrendered everything to the 'conservative John McCain' of the day Bob Dole.
There are many positive differences I see in this years campaign as it relates to THIS opportunity; Buchanan wasn't left standing as 1 f 3 candidates remaining from a formidable group of 11 when he bowed down; his grassroots effort took place before it was clear to the masses that the GOP had turned it's back on the platform becoming eletist & moderate (on the verge of liberal) and he didn't have the financial backing or internet support that exists for Ron Paul in 2008.
I pray that we all have the wisdom to look at our past and LEARN from it. 'There's your answer' for those that ask why waste your vote, who's votes were wasted in 1996? Those that voted for Bob Dole, because he could win, and mine along with thousands of others that believed Pat Buchanan was true to his 'convictions'(?) It's no wonder Buchanan failed miserably in 2000, he didn't and probably couldn't understand that his supporters of 4 years prior were truly convicted and wouldn't stand for anything less when it came to their votes.
CONVICTION - an unshakable belief, something worth dying for and when faced with death holding true.
- A 'No' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble. -Mahatma Gandhi-
- Never for the sake of peace and quiet deny your convictions. -Dag Hammarskjold-
- You must stick to your conviction, but be ready to abandon your assumptions. -Denis Waitley-
- For a successful revolution it is not enough that there is discontent. What is required is a profound and thorough conviction of the justice, necessity and importance of political and social rights. -B.R.Ambedkar-
- When you take a stand out of deep conviction, people know. They may not even agree, but they ask, 'Do I want someone who is willing to take a hard stand and someone I can trust to do that when the chips are down?' They want that. -Barbara Boxer- (even Barbara knows what it means)
- Conviction is worthless unless it is converted into conduct. -Thomas Carlyle-
- Mix a conviction with a man and something happens. -Powell Clayton-
I for one am excited, not because I see a Ron Paul victory on the horizon (though I continue to pray and believe for it) but because I have an opportunity to fulfill my obligation as a Christian first and American citizen second, to cast my precious vote and full fledged support behind a movement such as this.
Dr Paul . . . Keep up the fight for what’s right and God’s speed to all of us in the fight for the heart and soul of our country, let LIBERTY reign!!!

Will it take a full-fledged depression or run-away inflation before Conservatives realize that the war is largely to blame for the collapsing dollar and economy. Throughout history, wars have always led to big government. These middle-eastern wars are no different. Will it take another 4 years of economic rot and government expansion before they wake up?

Romney is not fundamentally different than McCain. There are differences between the two but they are ever so slight. No matter how you slice it, Romney's solution in Massachusetts for health care was more government intervention, not less. It was not a true free market approach to health care and it would only have served to line the pockets of well-entrenched industries, just like Bush's Medicare reform bill ultimately benefited the pharmaceutical industry.

Look for Ron Paul to do very well in the upcoming Washington caucuses. The war is very unpopular in the Northwest, even among Republicans.
It's sad to hear Rush and Hannity say they wish there were a principled conservative candidate to vote for, when there has been all along -- Ron Paul. Apparently they think continuing to occupy Iraq is more important than trying to promote their conservative principles.
Again, for those who haven't figured it out: Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Iraq was ruled by a secular dictator, one we formerly supported as a counterweight to Islamic-ruled Iran. There were no al Qaeda in Iraq until after we invaded and destroyed Saddam's government.
Invading and occupying Iraq hasn't made us safer, it has convinced the less radical Islamic people that the more radical ones are right, that we are an imperial power who wants to conquer them and force our values on them. It was exactly the response bin Laden was hoping for.

I am not a Republican but I joined the Republican party to vote for the only sensible candidate, Ron Paul. I am turning my democratic friends to the Republican party to vote for "real change", Ron Paul is bringing new people to the party, do you conservatives even care?? Your party is about to split and you argue about who is more conservative. This election is bigger than republicans, democrats, its about being American. There are laws in place that are undermining our national sovereignty, and the Patriot Act which undermines our civil liberties. Ron Paul is the only telling us the truth.
Ron Paul has the most military support than any other candidate combined. What does that tell us? He has the largest grass roots campaign, he always returns money from his Congressional budget, he believes that we can run our own lives, he doesn't want to run them for us. I urge all concerned Americans to vote for the only candidate that loves America, and has many years of proving it. Ron Paul.

Mr. Silva,
Thanks for covering the event and providing your first-hand account. It would be easy to discount Dr. Paul following the poor showing on Tuesday, as many other news outlets have chosen to do.
Thankfully, he is still fighting on and providing those curious enough a legitimate alternative to McCain and Huckabee.
Peace be with you.

The facts support Paul's position that Iraq had nothing to do with 911. But a large percentage of Americans believe that it did even though it's totally false! Let's not forget either that the Bush administration LIED at least 935 times in their case for war against Iraq, according to The Center for Public Integrity report entitled "Iraq: The War Card, Orchestrated Deception on the Path to War" which any reasonable person can read at:

Ron Paul is the leader that we need. He's not afraid to tell the truth even when he knows it's unpopular among the people he's trying to win over. The truth hurts sometimes.
Hopefully, more conservatives will begin to realize that the premise of the Iraq War was laced with liberalism and that although our cause may have been motivated by good intentions, it is helping to pave our road to hell.

From the US Veterans Dispatch: “Regardless of all the obvious signs pointing to McCain’s PTSD, the one outstanding fact is that McCain, by his own admission, broke under the stress of captivity and tried to kill himself.” McCain is broken, is part of the broken system and will only go on to break this once great nation. Our greatest threat is bankruptcy and this person does not have a plan. He is focused on phantom threats and boogeymen that will help to keep moving what Bush has started. Since Impeachment is off the table at all costs, with the current Congress completely negligent in their current duties in invoking the process, are you willing to place your future and the future of your children in the hands of this man?

A NEW HOPE
We all have been living a nightmare. A vision D. Eisenhower warned of in his 1961 farewell address to the nation. In his address, Eisenhower warned of the corruption of our government, our society, and our culture by the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. It seems that, as a nation, we have not listened. Eisenhower’s dire vision has become our reality. And from this fearful dream, this nation is waking. Our eyes are opening to the truth collectively for the first time. WE THE PEOPLE are finding that we have been subjugated, placated into ignorance and fear, lied to by the very people we have entrusted to preserve and protect our rights, liberties, and our constitution. Many will turn away in fear of truth and close their eyes once again. To open our eyes to this reality, is to also understand that we are all responsible for it as well. complacency and dependence upon the machine keeps THE PEOPLE in line because it is convenient and safe. We have sold our souls. We have as a nation let this happen to ourselves.
My heart breaks for the people of this nation. Our government wages war upon our freedoms, liberties, and our constitution. I watch our republic’s destruction, not to the sound of guns or bombs, but to the sound of thunderous applause of those held captive by terrified patriotic blindness, guided by the propaganda of fear, as we give our rights and even the lives of our fellow man for the profit of the corrupt. A fear that is erasing our great history of freedom and repeating itself 70 years later with another dictatorship of war, under the guise of homeland security and the protection of the people.
BUT THERE IS STILL HOPE.
With love and openness, we can overcome ignorance and fear. It is our right as the people, and my duty as a United States MARINE written into our constitution by our founding fathers, entrusted to us, by the people, to ensure that our liberty, freedom, and the constitution never again become the subjugation of the corruption that we have wrought upon ourselves. We must take back our country, and give it to the people. So let us open our hearts, take responsibility, and make our HOPE become our reality. Lets begin REVOLUTION. His name
Dr. Ron Paul
Posted by: Tim Gallien | February 7, 2008 6:36 PM
I find it odd that McCain rolled his eyes and chuckled every time Paul spoke at the debates as though Paul was a nut. Yet McCain has chosen to steal Ron Paul's economic advisor Donald Luskin. Who is the nut now? Paul for his economic ideas or McCain for absconding with one of Paul's ( a nut according to him) staff members. It is sad to see Republicans go neocon nuts and foam at the mouth for more war. I was wary about the war at the beginning but it seemed unpatriotic not to support the president. Now years later with my husband constantly deployed, muslim extremism growing and no WMD's found, I realize the reasons for war were a deliberate lie. I respect John McCain. He knows what it is to sacrifice for his country. But Paul is the true, old school Republican, McCain is not.
Posted by: sharon | February 7, 2008 6:36 PM
Waiting for Dr. Paul's speech to the CPAC all afternoon, I was sooo disappointed that it was not to be found on Cable News channels. Even Fox News, the most Republican-oriented channel, had Neil Caputo interviewing Clint Eastwood, and they barely tip-toed around the name of Ron Paul. CNN had its usual assortment of news, but not a mention of Paul or his speech. MSNBC had its blond anchorwoman interviewing Julie Mason of the Houston Chronicle (a TX paper), and they were having a hilarious time laughing when a segment of Ron Paul's speech came on, apparently by mistake, while they were discussing Huckabee.
If this country gets into 100 years of war with McCain at the helm, the media will have to explain that to our descendants. They are enabling the future to suit the warmongers. Who are the bloodthirsty people behind the media curtain?

McCain sewed up the Republican nomination.
Paul is irrelevant.
Unless you like Obama or Hilary, stop whining and vote for McCain.

Sounds like Ronny is turning into a 'War Libertarian'.
Posted by: C.Morris | February 7, 2008 6:49 PM
Paul gets like 3% to 7% votes in most cases. That means even his own supporters don't actually go out and vote for him. He needs to bow out and focus on his congressional race.
Posted by: Medusa McBabble | February 7, 2008 6:50 PM
I wish ron paul would focus on how the war is killing the US, and explain his views on less spending so we can save the dollar.
He needs to get dirty! McCain blabs on about his time in Nam, but they call him "songbird" McCain- He is a RAT.He committed TREASON, and he stopped the efforts of saving 2000 POWs. ...google songbird. It may be the year of the RAT for the Chinese New Year, but I don't want one in the White House!

It seems most Americans prefer being mushrooms and fed MSM BS 24/7.
Ron Paul voted For the invasion in Afghanistan where the Taliban and Al Quida were known to be and I believe most Americans would agree it was the right thing to do.
Ron Paul voted AGAINST the invasion of Iraq and I believe most Americans see the wisdom in that vote.
He would protect us by brining our troops home and puting them on our borders where the real threat to our safety from terrorist maybe sneaking in a dirty bomb.
He has my vote and my absolute confidence he will do what it akes to protect our country here instead of protecting other countries borders.

Ron Paul is this nation's only hope as a presidential candidate, republican or democrat, to put the brakes on a runaway federal government. He understands that civil and religious liberty lie in limited government which translates into limited taxation, sound monetary policies for economic stability, and personal responsibility for one's family, education, and faith. We are on the verge of demise as a nation (morphing to North American Union and the Amero currency) if he doesn't win since no other candidate seems to truly understand the God-given fundamentals for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as represented in his Comprehensive Economic Revitalization Plan, his proved Congressional record, and his position letters. His personal life is a resounding witness of a Christian who understands the Scriptures and lives by them. He’s the man for this critical hour in the USA. HE DESERVES THE VOTE OF TRUE CONSERVATIVES.
Thank you conservative Americans for helping him to overcome the startling and appalling un-American media blackout and discrimination against an honorable, ten-term Congressman. By the way he is correct about the Iraq war, but the truth hurts.

There is only one republican running for the presidency, that is Ron Paul. The only republican or democrat for that matter who cares about this country is Ron Paul. I am sick of all the posturing, the same old empty promises, and lies. I know Ron Pauld speaks the truth. How refreshing, yet how sad the major media has silenced such an honorable presidential candidate.

McCainnedy? I'm a die-hard conservative and I would sooner vote for Hillary than for McCain. At least she's somewhat honest about being a liberal. Now with Romney out, Paul's the only conservative choice.

If McAain and Huckabee are ever in the White House we"ll not be in Iraq one hundred years, we,ll be there until Jesus Christ returns.

Its amazing to think that the Conservative movement thinks it owns the Republican Party, as if the Party needs to goose-step in line with CPAC's "Kampf".
These are registered Republicans selecting John McCain. There must be a reason. Perhaps they have seen that the country has become polarized thanks to ultra-conservative ideals.
Ron Paul may be the answer to CPAC, but he can run again under the Libertarian Banner.. Perhaps the Know-Nothing Party needs to be resurrected to appeal to Nativists.
I know Reagan was known for being able to compromise and work with Congress to get his agenda through... McCain has those skills.

Very inspiring speach by Ron Paul today! "Live within our means" that's exactly what we need. Less government and more free market enterprise will bring the jobs and economy back!

Huck- -- He doesn't need a speech! He's a man of character and speaks total truth. All knowledgeable people understand this.
Posted by: Bruce T McPhee | February 7, 2008 7:07 PM
I completely agree that Ron needs to temper some of his speeches. I believe that he gets off on a tangent too often and even though it is of great concern, loses the viewers in the process. I blame the MSM for this because they give him such little time to express his views. Maybe if they gave him more air time he wouldn't have to stuff all of that information into one statement. Maybe his managers should address this situation and tailor the statements in advance since we already know that he will be allocated a trivial amount of time to state his case.
With that said, GO RON PAUL!

I have a question here about something Ican't understand. Dr. Paul I thought was suppose to have a strong showing in west virgina. How can it be that he had absolutly 0 votes in that state? C'mon no way. Whats going on here?

If the republicans don't pull it together here and circle the wagons we'll be talking about how bad nationalized health care system is next year. Get it together and vote McCain or prepare for your taxes to rise as quickly as the dollar falls.

Hey Jeff -
Wake up friend. The blinders on the side of your eyes have been placed there by folks who want you in a box. The earlier you admit it, the faster we'll throw of the yoke of these real loonies in DC who want to control our lives and the world as a whole.

It is hard to believe that the Republican Party would just just throw this election away.
It is a long way to November. I'll bet that there will be some major surprises until that time.

Once again this is a story on a mainstream news outlet's 'blog' section. The conservatives that want to hear this message that don't know Paul's platform still won't hear it. The Baltimore Sun is owned by the Tribune Company who has a chairman on the CFR, BG David L. Grange, USA (Ret.).

We Republicans have let the neo-conservatives take control of leadership of the Republican Party and the nation. You might say we have pooped in our own nest.
I mean when Joseph Isadore "Joe" Lieberman who ran as a Democratic Vice-President with Al Gore only eight years now is stumping for McVain. Hello!! Is any body home in the Republican Party.
Since how is wasting $500,000,000,000.00 in a sand pile across the pond considered conservative and good for national security vs. having an open border and giving amnesty to 20,000,000 illegal aliens. As someone that lives dead center of the United States with illegal aliens at every turn I don’t see the threat coming from over the pond but from crossing the Rio Grande. So what if you still think we need to be at war some where other than home. Get over it!
This old gray haired guy is voting for the only real fiscal conservative for president and is asking anyone with BRAINS (as Ann Coulter put on her book cover) to support and vote RonPaul2008.com

I have been a Ron Paul supporter from day one. AND from day one...I've been concerned with what I think is Dr. Paul's "Achille's Heel"...and that's the way he approaches getting out of Iraq. I believe (like every other Paul supporter) that getting out of Iraq is a must. However, from a political standpoint, Dr. Paul can't continue to just make the simple statement; "It was a mistake for us to have gone in to this illegal war, so we should just get out and bring the troops home." Dr. Paul doesn't go on to tell the public what his strategy will be to "bring the troops home", and leaves you with the impression that...once he becomes President...he will have the military in Iraq just drop what they're doing and just pack up and leave on the first plane out. Time and time again I've watched people's reactions to his "we should just bring the troops home" statement...and what I see is a look of bewilderment and comments like; "If he (Dr. Paul) thinks we can just get up and leave immediately...he's CRAZY!!!" Now mind you...these are people who "agree we should get out of Iraq". But the idea that we just drop what we're doing over there and high-tail it on home really causes a lot of people to shudder that otherwise LOVE what Dr. Paul has to say! He's got to asuage these people's fears, of simply abandoning the war fatigued Iraqi people, and just leaving them left holding the bag. A lot of these people feel that...whether it was a mistake or not, when the United States invaded Iraq...we broke it! Now that the damage is done, it is our responsibility to at least leave that devastated country in a manner that doesn't just leave the Iraqi people hung out to dry, and left in a position where they are "open season" for Al-Queda terrorists still within their borders, and the warring tribal factions (Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds). Everybody agrees with Dr. Paul that we need to get out now...but we need to do it in a responsible and compasionate way. If he is able to come up with a realistic approach on how to address this issue of withdrawal...I think you'll see a flood of "uncommitted" people joining the Paulite troops!

Finally!!! Some news about Dr. Paul!
I feel like my country has been hijacked by the mainstream media! This blackout of "all things Dr. Ron Paul" is so blatantly un-American! It shocks the conscience that ordinary citizens have to get on-line to find any little morsel of information! It's no wonder that when I was out campaigning for him that people would say, "Who?"
He's like "the invisible candidate"! Mike Huckabee got a taste of the treatment at the last debate. Remember? "Hello!! There's another candidate over here to the RIGHT who would like to answer that question!" Welcome to the MSM Mike!
I'm still wearing my Ron Paul pin, I still have my stickers on my car that say, "If You Are Not Outraged You Are Not Paying Attention" and "Ron Paul President 2008". I was stopped in the store today by two individuals who saw my pin and wanted more information!
I live in the country and there's plenty of traffic going past my house every day coming and going. I get lots of honks from passing cars who love my Ron Paul yard sign.
I will finish this post and dig out my credit card to throw him another $50. I will continue to give as much as I can until I hear from his own lips that he will not continue and I am praying as hard as I can that he will keep campaigning with all his heart and mind and soul.
Because there are hundreds of thousands of Americans out here of all political persuasions who love and respect you Dr. Paul....and who also love and respect our Constitution. Thank you.

Here is what I don't get about conservatives who like nation building. On every issue besides the war they agree with Ron Paul becuase they know government doesn't work. It can't provide healthcare, education, retirement, ect. But for some reason they think it can turn Iraq into a democracy. Please someone explain this to me.
The military is used to kill people and break things. If we wanted to get Bin Laden we could of kept after him. Even Ron Paul voted to use the military in this way. But why the nation building?
Posted by: John Adams | February 7, 2008 7:39 PM
I haven't voted since the farce of 2000.At that time I was an independent slanting towards democratic principles.I'm a grandmother of 8,thought I'd never vote republican until I heard Ron Paul.I am now a registered republican and I'm sure there are many others like me. Let us in your party. Forget the status quo;the party needs true conservative people learning true conservative ways. Ron Paul is the man to take us there He's also the man to lead us on the right path as a nation.Anyone who thinks this war is just should think what all the people in Iraq are going through and how we would like all the carnage and death if the shoes were on the other feet. The power has always been in the people not the establishment for when the people rise for honesty, truth and justice; It's the true american way!

Sigh. Ignorance is strength. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. And my favorite: Ron Paul is the crazy one.
Posted by: vlad | February 7, 2008 7:42 PM
Thank God for this man, he is the only sane and reasonable person running so far. Wish the rest of the country was smart enough to vote for him before they all bankrupt us. Bin Laden is fighting an economic war, and he is laughing at us everyday because our administration thinks is just trying to blow us up -we look like idiots thanks to Bush and the McCain / Huckabee & Clinton / Obama types. Paul is the only one that can help fix the schools, the economy, the healthcare system, the "war on terror" and so much more, but most aren't interested enough to read up about the various subjects or even understand the government's role in their own lives.
Posted by: Hes | February 7, 2008 7:50 PM
Since McCain was not born in the USA he can not be a valid candidate for president of this country! He was born in the Country of Panama in Central America. This has never been a part of the USA ever!!! The U.S. Constitution forbids anyone who is not born here to be president. Therefore, the Huckster and Dr. Ron Paul are the only candidates left in the race for the office of president...-whzh-

Anyone who actually does any research on the topic knows full well that the Iraqi government under Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11. For goodness sakes they were the most secular government in the entire region and not in anyway consistent with Al Qaeda aspirations. . If anything… Saddam was on future Al Qaeda hit lists.
Ron Paul’s firm stand against the Iraq war and his vision of a strong national defense with non-intervention makes him the only presidential candidate that is consistent with our constitution and sharply contrasts all other candidates in both parties. His insight and experience with financial affairs leaves all other candidates on both sides of the fence in the shade. His voting record of consistent integrity can not be questioned or rivaled by any other candidate in both parties.
I spent seven years teaching at the university level – American culture and globalization (I was teaching my students about Islam and radial factions five years before 9/11 – that terrible day was not a surprise to many of us). I spent another four years as a social scientist funded by the DoD addressing cultural / environmental impact from military activities and U.S. Army transformation (rapid deployment / striker brigade concept). Please, trust me - Ron Paul is not soft on defense! He garners more campaign contributions from active and retired military personnel than all other candidates combined in both parties! He knows what he is talking about regarding our self-destructive foreign policy of “policing the world” and morally corrupt “preemptive war” - military professionals recognize that! They support him and so should anyone that values the future safety and security of their families and this nation.
Some of us didn’t have to vote for George W. Bush once or TWICE to know what was going to happen! Some of us knew by researching and being honest with ourselves prior to 2000 that Bush…and company would certainly destroy the Republican Party and bring us to these dangerous circumstances both nationally and internationally. Unfortunately, millions of our fellow Americans didn’t do any research or incorporate any form of foresight and now they must bear the responsibility of the last eight years on their shoulders. Don’t let that happen to you now and / or again.
Ron Paul is the only conservative left in the race and the only long term constitutional fiscal conservative of the original GOP eleven. He always was the best choice and should have been supported from the onset.
I urge any decent American who values the constitution, individual liberties, freedom, peace and prosperity to support Ron Paul! Please don’t make the same mistake again by supporting a world class loser. Trust me - McCain as the GOP candidate is completely out of step with the vast majority of the American people. He can not win this election against any Democrat.
Ron Paul is the only candidate in both parties that offers real solutions to the dangerous circumstances that confront us. There is no “feel good” pie in the sky promises that will not be fundable – there is no “fear” mongering at “threat level code red” to aid in stripping you of your individual civil liberties – that is not his style. He offers us honest evaluations and reasonable solutions to the dangerous realities that confront us as individuals and as a nation. It is up to us as a people to rise to the occasion…look ourselves in mirror and have a sincere national “reality check”. We have run out of time and money. We can not afford as a people to make another four years worth of mistakes. We need to get it right – Ron Paul is the right choice for 2008.

Thank you for your story on Dr. Paul at CPAC. I wish everyone in this country could have seen him speak with the youth of this nation on MTV last week. The young people in the audience were turned in their seats to watch the monitor and listen to what he had to say hanging on every word. It was as though they had never heard the truth before.

Ron Paul opposes NAFTA/CAFTA, the NAFTA Superhighway and it's southern leg, the Trans Texas Corridor. The people of Texas are taking up arms to fight the globalist, Neo-Cons who want to sell our children's future to foreigners who will make us pay them to drive on our own roads. The national debt is beyond insane and the 3.11 trillion dollar budget does not include the funding for Iraq and Afganistan, but it does include 500 billion dollars to fund the universal draft (our sons AND DAUGHTERS) so that McCain can fight his 100 years war with our children. Screw him. Ron Paul is right about obeying the U.S. Constitution. Only people who do not have military aged children and are not between the ages of 18 and 42 would support John McCain. It's easy to support a war that someone else has to fight. Bring the troops home. Let the Iraqis and Afgans build their own nation. If Americans don't think Muslims can build their own country, just look at Dubai. Iraq has oil, Dubai doesn't, and look what Dubai has done. It's because they had to, because the U.S. doesn't have any use for a nation without oil and doesn't have a reason to keep them in the dark ages with constant conflict. Give me a break. Vote Ron Paul, or die in Iraq for McCain's entertainment. And while McCain is saying he knows nothing about the economy, Ron Paul is warning that we had better begin living within our means, because the chickens of this deficit are coming home to roost with a vengeance. Ron Paul has a plan that would stop illegal immigration by removing the incentives. McCain has a plan to throw open the gates and let the illegal immigrations bankrupt our healthcare system and our nation. Is there no one left who feels it is better to die free than to live as a slave? Our children must not be turned into debtor slaves to foreigners by the Neo-Cons.
RON PAUL, HOPE FOR AMERICA, OUR ONLY HOPE.

The results reported on CNN and elsewhere are for the second round of voting.
