Will superdelegates settle Clinton vs. Obama?: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Michael Tackett

The next big fight in the Democratic race?

Will voters and regular delegates to the Democratic National Convention this summer in Denver choose the nominee, or will the decision reside with the party's Superdelegates, the 796 party leaders, insiders and formers who also get a Supersized vote?

This could be the most perilous aspect of the Democratic contest between Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.

It is particularly so for Clinton. If she has to rely on the superdelegates, it most surely will alienate many of the new voters that Obama has brought into the process. It will be seen as a back room deal, even though it is very much within the rules of the Democratic Party.

That's one big difference between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats have so catered to their many constituencies that they end up with things like Superdelegates to appease folks. Republicans, with their mostly winner-take-all primaries and simpler delegate process, are almost certain to have a clean and clear result.

That's why a lot of Democrats are hoping that it doesn't come to this, that somehow the incredibly close race for the nomination breaks open for either Clinton or Obama. It doesnt look that way so far.

It must be tough being a Superdelegate. No one wants to get "Fostered".
How low will the Clinton Duoacracy sink to hold on to the Old Guard super delegates?

Hillary can't be trusted! If Obama does not get the nomination, I won't bother to vote for anyone!!

I swear, if the superdelegates overturn the popular vote, there's going to be a revolution in the Democratic Party. It'll make it a cake-walk for McCain in November. As a Democrat, I love our principles, but I hate the sliminess of our party.

OBAMA can't be trusted. He has aligned himself with hate mongers and people who are notorious for making trouble wherever they go. I am a die hard Democrat but if Obama is the nominee, with his lack of experience and his buddies that seem to hate Jews among others, I may have to seriously consider another vote. Obama is the WRONG choice period! The man has no views! Universal Health Care? Who knows? He doesnt SAY anything-he talks a big game but has no views! Dont make the Obama Mistake!

If this happens, liberals will no longer be able to point to the Supreme Court establishing W as president for his first term.

A small group of people determining who will lead the country. The republicans will have a field day with this, calling it communistic.

This is not a news story per se, but unabashed speculation passing for a story.

If you want to editorialize, say so. Nice try, Tribsters, but we've figured it out long ago.

'weinerdog 43' what is your point?

I think the majority of the people who read the "Swamp" section understand that this is more of an editorial section than a straight news section.

Obama can't win no matter how many converts he makes. Young people have turned out for caucuses but have a bad record in November. Warts and all Hillary can get elected with Hispanics, women of both parties and little people.

Obama needs to address the Larry Sinclair allegations!

The people deserve to know the truth!

I think they have not touched the surface where Barack came from, the Emil Jones machine. Until the spotlight shines on him as front-runner will we see the true Brack. Could that be why he does not like to call himself the front-runner. Let's not forget about Uncle Tony who gave him some sweet deals on real estate. Does that not go to his character?

How apropos that the Democrats would end up trying to negotiate an election process without regards to the actual people they represent only a short 8 years after wailing about the injustice they suffered in 2000. Even more ironic if they end up counting Florida this year. True change... I think not.

I have to agree with you. However, the possibility exists. I would just like to remind the voters that whomever you support, they have the same vision towards Iraq. McCain has the exact opposite. McCain is 4 more years of Bush. It is the same "pickle" that the right is in. "Alternative"

It' a bird?

It's a plane?

It's SUPERDELEGATES!!

Just as long we elect Obama. We can finally get back Truth, Justice and the American way.

After the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the Democratic Party implemented changes in its delegate selection process, based on the work of the McGovern-Fraser Commission. The purpose of the changes was to make the composition of the convention less subject to control by party leaders and more responsive to the votes cast during the campaign for the nomination. These comprehensive changes left some Democrats believing that the role of party leaders and elected officials had been unduly diminished, weakening the Democratic ticket. In response, the superdelegate rule was instituted after the 1980 election. Its purpose was to accord a greater role to 'active politicians'.
The superdelegates are members of congress, the house and other powerful members of the Democratic party. A list of them can be found on the internet by googling for it. These superdelegates...delegates who will be deciding who will be "available to run" for office of the executive branch, is now being decided primarily by members of another one of the three branches of government, the legislative branch. This is completely contrary to the intent of the original framers of our country and we should all be making our opinions about this situation known to our party leaders. Some of you may be saying to yourself, "So What", they aren't actually making the decision about who is elected. To that I ask you how you vote for a candidate that was running but didn't win the nomination? In other words, if Hillary wins the nomination, you will not be able to vote for Obama and vice versa. So these superdelegates may have more to say about who eventually wins the office than the voters do. This is important stuff guys!
Many of you may remember how the Democratic party tried to make an issue about the supreme court and the presidential election of 2000 and that the supreme court somehow decided who was the winner of that race. Even though that is exactly what they wanted us all to believe, the real truth is that No, the US Supreme Court reversed a decision by the Florida Supreme Court who said that the recount could be done unequally. Here is the actual facts....U. S. Supreme Court reverses Florida Supreme Court decision ordering manual recount of ballots. Majority of justices (7–2) agree that recount violates Constitution's equal protection and due process guarantees, since counting standards varied among counties. If there is any court whose intentions should be questioned, it is the Florida Supreme Court who decided that some votes, depending on where they were cast, were more important than others.

Comparing the superdelegates to the crooked supreme court appointment is ludicrous. The court stopped any valid counting of the votes in a clear case of criminal partisanship. There was no understanding going in to the election that it would be all up to the "Fascist Five" in determining the election.
Obama knew the moment he declared his candidacy that there would be a block of superdelegates. His job is to win them over or make them irrelevant.

We hope that voters in Ohio, Penn. & Texas hand Hillary Clinton big victories, along with the votes in Florida & Michigan which should be counted, Hillary would be the nominee. If it comes down to superdelegates, we hope they are wise and stick with Hillary. Sen. Obama is unelectable. When the "bloom if off the rose" he's toast. Hillary Clinton is battle tested, battle ready, VOTE HILLARY! Bonus, she's actually FROM CHicago, born and raised here!

OBAMA...This time I'm voting for a smart president. Don't need to know his views as much as need to know his character and heart. Not going to get caught up in the rhetoric, staying above the fray giving his opponents nothing to spin. Smart man who will figure it out once he gets there, just have to trust him. Only person in the race who has not proven to be untrustworthy. YES WE CAN.

If the true message of the Dimocrats is change, then what the heck is Hillary running for?
She is the original member of the ZARU family.
You do know the Zaru's don't you?
Mi, Kika and Iwa.
Do I need to spell it out for you?
Mizaru, Kikazaru and Iwazaru are the names of those three monkeys that you all know as See No, Hear No and Speak No Evil.
She's not blind to the truth, she just doesn't know what it IS.
Her husband had the same defect, he didn't know the meaning of IS either.
Apparently it has more than one definition.
Say wasn't that just like that investment that she made that returned $100,000- without her ever having to come up with any money.
It IS still the best example of margin trading on record.

Candidate Barack "Hussein" Obama, calls himself the agent for change. As a Chicagoan, give me a break.

Obama, has Chicago Old Style Politicans as his insiders for those who are not from Chicago on his National campaign. They are David Axelrod a political dinosaur in Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's inner circle. Be careful, Clinton has some Delegates from Illinois, Sandoval and Cardenas who ran in the 4th Congressional District Delegate (Clinton). When the summer arrives in Denver, the Chicago Democratic Machine (Obama supporters), will make certain that Martin Sandoval and George Cardenas change their votes to Obama. They are office holders in Chicago and do what the Chicago Mayor tells them to do, and even in the smoke filled room.

Clinton must win more delegates than Barack outright for me to even consider her in the general election. The Super Delegates system is the kind of back room nonsense that DC is good for and needs to change. Super Delegates must know the general election is in their hands and they can decide to hand it to Mac if they so desire through their shannanigans.

If the superdelegates deciede this it becomes an oligarchy. The Republicans will have a field day and rightfully so. They HAVE to let the people decide.

If the nominee is chosen by superdelegates, and not the voters, there will be rioting at the Democratic National Convention in Colorado. It'll be a replay of Chicago.

No matter what happens, after the Primaries and Caucuses are done (the last one is the Puerto Rico Primary on June 7th), neither Clinton or Obama are going to be anywhere near the magic number of 2,025 delegates to wrap up the Democratic nomination. For the 79 days (over 11 weeks!) after that, the campaigns will have to switch to a Superdelegate-wooing period, and having to put up with the constant news stories about smoke-filled rooms is something that the Democrats can't afford to go through. Plus McCain will have all this time to organize, fund raise, and otherwise sit back and enjoy the Strum und Drang.

This whole Superdelegate thing should not be the deciding factor. There is an online petition to ask that Governor Dean lead an effort to amend the Convention rules to guarantee that the winner of a majority of Pledged Delegates (the ones awarded through Primaries and Caucuses) will have sufficient bound Superdelegate votes to guarantee the nomination.

Here is the link - http://www.PetitionOnline.com/dem2008/petition.html

Please, forward this to your Democratic friends and ask them to help in this grassroots effort to keep this nomination in the hands of the people voting and not with the Superdelegates.

re: Barak for truth, justice, and the American way...

You've got to be kidding! The man has yet to come clean on his shady Rezko dealings and you expect Truth and Justice? The man is promising "free" benefits to every possible class of voter at the cost of someone else, and you expect the American Way?

Barak is a smooth-talking pretty boy who will fall flat on his face Day 1 in office. He's the Republican's best hope.

I guess the comments above prove their exteme ignorance.

One that they didn't know that superdelegates have existed for year (I beleive since 1984) and two that superdelages can vote differently than the primary voters. If they couldn't vote differently, what would be the point of superdelages? Wake up you people!!!!

And people wonder why the voter turn out is so low and that voter apathy is what it is. What a crock all of this is.......

The use of superdelegates is anti-democratic. Why not put a vote to the American people to see if we want to get rid of them?

Just as long we elect Obama. We can finally get back Truth, Justice and the American way.

Posted by: David J | February 10, 2008 2:27 PM

The American way? Maybe. Besides Obama helping out his slum lord pal Rezko, how about his lying about accepting money from federal lobbyists?

Obama proudly tells us he doesn't accept money from federal lobbyists... however he accepts the money from lobbyists' spouses, business associates and friends. You call that truth and justice? Any normal person would call it sleazy.

Superdelegates illiminate the idea of democracy.

"And people wonder why the voter turn out is so low and that voter apathy is what it is. What a crock all of this is......."

Tired -- voter turn out for the primaries is at an all-time HIGH -- for the Democrats.

I find it interesting to see this back-biting going on in blogs like this while the two candidates are attempting to raise the course of the debate between them. If you're a Democrat, now is not the time to snipe between these two candidates. Either one is a far sight better than anything the Republicans are offering up, and the only way we lose in November is if we scare one another out of the election.

It is easy to find the slimy underbelly of ANY politician if you look for it. Because, at the end of the day, they are all politicians. It is the sad nature of the business of politics in the 21st Century. But it was truly very much the same in the 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries as well. To get to this point in one's political career the politician is going to meet all sorts of people, many of them with a lot of money and influence, and some of those people are going to be slimy. It happens.

At the end of the day, you need to look at the person whom you believe matches your vision of the United States and support them, realizing that in the end you may find yourself supporting someone who is not in the general election in the fall. Then you spend some time sorting out which Party will actually watch out for YOUR best interests, and the larger interests of what you believe is in the best interests of the U.S. -- and you vote for them.

All of the sniping simply brings out the worst in people. If you have an allegation, don't do it in inuendo... just say it. All the rest of it is simply bait to lower the discourse.

Exactly what "more" experience does Hillary have? Is it simply more years on the planet or sleeping with the president? If the latter, then does Monica count? And what about whitewater? who want "truth"

Finally we can put an end to all this "every vote must count" BS as the democrats blow off all the voters in Michigan and Florida.

Way to go Dems. Only count the votes you want to count, like florida.

anyone that thinks the politicians care about the common voter thinks is a fool. the politicians show over and over that they don't care about what the people want

This superdelegate thing is a joke and will make the Dems look ridiculous in light of the 2000 election.

How can you trust a guy with the middle name Hussein? Especially when he doesn't use it.He is nothing but a State Representative who got lucky.

The superdelegate scenario is VERY fitting for the Democratic Party. The same party that won’t let people choose their own school (vouchers) for their children, now knows better than the voters which candidate should be their nominee. Ahh yes, once again, let the government decide everything for the sheep and let the voters be damned. Socialism at its best.

Why are so many so quick to discount Barack as a leader? True leadership doesn't require hands on experience in every single field that one may encounter. It requires disciplined thinking, action plans and execution.

He sure has been successful in raising money and taking on the Clinton Machine.

Looks very much like a leader to me.

How he can deal with Congress is another question, but Hillary (or Mac) would have the same problem with that...

Since when does leadership require

"Candidate Barack "Hussein" Obama, calls himself the agent for change. As a Chicagoan, give me a break."

Ceaser, Hussein is a very common name throughout the world, and it is obvious that you are trying imply something (as many others have) by putting in quotations. By that logic, we might as well compare every Joe to Stalin. Completely devoid of all reason, yet people want to make an issue of it.

How can you trust a guy with the middle name Hussein? Especially when he doesn't use it.He is nothing but a State Representative who got lucky.

Posted by: Bart | February 11, 2008 10:35 AM

Everybody knows his middle name. Your using it here just shows the racism of the "right".

I have know idea what the middle names of John McCain, Mitt Romney, or Mike Huckabee are. So, apparently, they don't use them much either. Nor would that make a difference as to why I should or shouldn't vote for them.

Next January when the new president says, "I, Barack Hussein Obama, will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States", I will be proud be part of a party that is not so petty as to care about a name.

If the nominee comes down to this brokered back room deal, and it goes to Clinton, I believe a lot of the middle of the pack voters will run to McCain, who really is seen as a moderate. This will be deadly for the party.

I think Obama represents a unique opportunity for us as a nation to rise above the quagmire that Bush has pulled us into.
If he doesn't get the Democratic nomination because of superdelegates I think he has the support of the people to launch a viable 3rd party campaign.

Wake up people! Obama is touting a no vote on the war. In reality he was ABSENT for that vote which results in an automatic no! Obama had something better to do during one of the most important votes of his political career. Him saying he was right for voting no is a lie. As far as White water they spent years and millions trying to find anything. The repulican Senate and Congress spent seven years investigating Bill and Hillary and found Monica. Obama touts his background of regestering voters in the south side underprivileged nieghborhoods. In reality he was campaigning for himself! Look all I am trying to say is Quit believing everything Obama says and start looking at what he has done. Not what he jumped on board with but actually done it's not hard the list is very short. The superdelegates want the Whitehouse. Their job is to put the most electable candidate up for the nomination. They are going to be looking at how many ways the Republicans can attack and ruin a candidate. Obama changed his position on Excelon AFTER they gave him a ton of money which is what Hillary was saying. She was not knocking the legislation she cosponsored but the FACT obama had changed his position on it only after they bought him off. And the Republicans WILL make this and other things very clear. Basically the superdelegates are the damage control engineers. There job is to decide which candidate can stand on the facts of there background. NOT what they SAY there background is. Remember Obama is running on the promise of Truth and Change so when is he going to start? I don't mean the spin crap we have herd I mean the facts. WE the PEOPLE deserve answers. Blowing off the Larry Sinclair alliegations is not an answer. He will not be able to shrug off these kinds of things in the general elections. He has a lot of explaining to do before he gets my support which leads me to believe the superdelegates may be thinking the same thing.

Third party great idea! Remember Ralph Nader and the people deserve a third party. He gave GW the election

My family has always been Democrats as far back as anyone can remember. My father cut my sister out of his will for voting Republican. Both of my parents have passed. If Obama gets the nod however, I feel I have both their blessing to vote Republican. I just will NOT be a part of putting him in office, the thought of that makes me sick to my stomach. Alot of people better wake up before the screw this country up.
