3 a.m. call: President Obama calling Sen. Clinton: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

The "3 a.m. phone call'' quickly has become part of the lexicon of the 2008 presidential election campaign since Sen. Hillary Clinton deployed it in a Texas television ad asking voters who they want to answer the phone when the nation is in crisis.

But on NBC's Saturday Night Live, where the contest between Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama has become the butt of a running joke, they have come up with a new variation on that 3 a.m. call:

President Obama calling Sen. Clinton.

"It's 3 am, across our country kids are asleep...'' the narrator says. The phone rings.

The comedian playing the president says the CIA has confirmed that Iran has finished a nuclear device and the Russians, the North Koreans and Venezuelans have been helping them. "I trusted them,'' the president complains. "They lied to me... What do I do, Hillary, what do I do?"

"Mr. President,'' the comedian-senator says, "you can start by getting a hold of yourself.''

"I can't,'' he replies. " Don't you see that I am in a panic, a blind, unreasoning inexperienced panic?''

"One other thing,'' he says after getting the sage advice he is seeking. "I think the heat may be off in the White House.,,

"Go down in the basement, open the panel on the furnace. You'll see a red button....''

"Once again, I am amazed by the range and the depth of your experience,'' he says. "This job is hard. I had no idea.''

It's not too late! Get out and vote for Hillary - this skit emphasizes why we need her in the White House.

I'm just amazed at how SNL has come out for Hillary, and even more amazed that people are actually allowing SNL to influence their votes.

Truly hilarious. It seems neo-con Clinton and her neo-con advisors would rather bring down the Democratic party than allow a better and brighter candidate to emerge. We won't let her.

Yes indeed. we need to look more to COMEDY shows for our political answers.
What???????????? This is humor folks..thats all!

Wow I knew Tina Fey was the queen of base toilet humor, but this? This must be an effort to finish off what she started and kill SNL for good.

I realize the skit was supposed to make Hillary look ridiculous, but to less enlightened viewers, it will again play like SNL is rooting for Clinton.

Why would they have a reason to want Clinton to win? Maybe because they have the extremely competent Amy Poehler doing a spot-on Hillary, and have yet to find anyone who can spoof Obama.

I'm just sayin'.

I'm with Monique. It'd be awful to visit the WH with no heat on.

:-)

LOVE SNL! Hilarious. True.

Obama is unqualified and Obama is unelectable.

ROCK ON HILLARY!!!!!!!!!!!

Were you amazed when Oprah endorsed Barack? Or when Bush endorsed McCain?

if people allow caroline kennedy to influence their votes, then i see nothing wrong with snl writers influencing votes. snl is doing what the mainstream media lacked courage to do.

Clearly, SNL is showing bias toward Clinton. This skit was not funny and it is not funny how SNL is contributing to a growing division within the Democratic party. (By the way, this is coming from a former Republican and converted Obama supporter.) Think about this: We would not have a need for the so-called "3am phone call" if it was not for President Bush making this country more unsafe through policies and a war that both Clinton and McCain helped to facilitate! Experience isn't everything. Judgment also counts.

At least Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Dave Letterman, Jon Stewart, etc. generally make fun of ALLL the candidates. But I really resent any program, comic or not, being used to plug one candidate over another.
I have no problem with talk radio and slanted media coverage for shows INTENDED to present one side, but I have a real problem with political commentary, promoting one side or one candidate, seeping into general mainstream television. Why doesn't SNL do a skit showing Hillary hiding papers in her closet, or putting her WalMart stock into Chelsea's name, or playing around with TurboTax with BIll to create a new version of tax records. Fair is Fair, SNL!

This is clearly nonesense. This "president" is not Obama! If you want to know how Obama how Obama will react under pressure, then study how JFK react under the pressure of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Obama is smart and more brilliant than even JFK.

voters influenced by SNL??? There ought to be a test to get the right to vote.

Saturday Night Live is as passe and out of touch as Hillary. Clinton is toast. It's impossible for Clinton to catch Obama in pledged delegates no matter what they do with Florida and Michigan. It's over. The Super Delegates aren't going to overturn the pledged Delegate results and Obama has no reason to play second fiddle to Clinton. The ONLY issue left for the Democrats is how well (or how poorly) they want to do in the "down the ballot" races. Having Obama at the top of the ticket would increase the Democratic majorities in the house and senate. Looking at it from a practical perspective, 43% of all voters in the United States have an unfavorable view of Hillary Clinton. There's no way that Hillary Clinton, starting with such high negatives, would help Democratic candidates. With her incredibly high negatives, Hillary is destined to lose the National race. She knows that. That's why she is desparately pleading for Democrats to send Obama to the back of the bus (even though he'll have the most pledged delegates) as Vice-President--that's the only way she could win. But there's no logical reason to do that. Many "Recovering Republicans" like me, and independents, intend to vote for Obama in the General Election, but would NOT vote for a CLINTON/OBAMA ticket. The best hope that the Democratic Party has to win the Presidency in 2008 is NOT to send Obama to the back of the bus; it's to throw Clinton under the bus!

what does tina fey have to do with anything? she's not there anymore. she's also the best writer the show's ever had. so quit crying, brendan.

it was a saturday night live skit. you people are morons.

Not funny. People are dying in Iraq, Americans are losing their homes, we are environmentally destroying our planet. This election is not a joke.

I can create a better ad. How about President Hilary's 3 am call to Bill who is laying in bed with a couple of (politically minded but incredibly adorable)girls in Bahama! "Bill, I need you to help me! Bill, what? Are you doing that again? Bill, Bill, can you hear me! Don't you know I cannot think by myself without script. Remember it was our agreement. You think and I scare people. If you don't answer my call in the next three seconds, I would stop funding you ..." at this point, the Sleezy looking former Prez picks up a phone.

People still watch SNL, let alone have it influence their vote?

How Obama Can Win and Win Strong

I am aware of the delegate math.

I know that, unless the Clinton team runs roughshod with regard to superdelegates, the numbers are unassailable.

However, for Obama to not only win, but to win strong, and thus to be in the best position for the general, he must step outside of the box created when Clinton tactics were applied to his own admirable stance.

By declaring himself the candidate of the new politics, putting the politics of Rove et al. aside for a politics of honesty, straight-forward decency, and strength, he has putatively left the field open for Clinton et al. to lob innuendo after innuendo. If he responds, he is in violation of his commitment to the new; if he continues with his current path of non-response, he will be taken down by a series of attacks, that however false or fantastic, will eventually raises doubts in the mind of the electorate as to the validity of his new politics, and will, in the great viscera of the electorate, so responsive and so easily changed, appear "weak."

If he attacks, it is said, he betrays himself; if he continues on the same path, he is whittled down by rumor and insinuation.

Clinton's current strength is her ability to attack, however true the nature and content of the attacks. Obama must turn this very behavior into its own negative. To do so, Obama must relentlessly name what she is doing and anchor it--calling for an "end to the era of 'kitchen sink' politics, i.e.:

"It's about time that we left the era of "kitchen sink" politics, of distortion and insinuation, behind us. We have all seen it before this--a period where it was often difficult to tell falsehood, rumor, and misinformation from truth. It was this type of politics that contributed to a war in which we have lost the best of our national treasure, our nation's men and women. It is this type of politics that our opponents not so long ago decried. And it is this type of politics that, more than anything else, signals weakness--the inability to base one's statements and actions on the firm ground of truth, on our collective and honest dedication to the construction of a new and positive future--and instead, on a retreat into the politics of personal destruction.

It's time to take out the dirty dishes; It's time to empty the kitchen sink. After an era where it was often difficult to distinguish fantasy from truth, it's time to put that era behind us, to base our future efforts on a strong and honest desire to build a new and better future."

What Obama can create is his own "There you go again" moment--one that will both define Clinton (after all, someone has to do it), and place the Clinton camp in their very own box, of their own making: A box where any attack will immediately be associated in the voter's mind, and will be accompanied by a roll of the voter's eyes, as another example of Clinton's "kitchen sink" politics--of the chaotic, inconsistent, contradictory and frantic willingness to say or do anything to be elected, be it the changing of one's personality, tone, degree of honesty--or one's degree of tolerance or gusto for the politics of personal destruction.

Without a single attack, this demonstrates the nature of the Clinton camp: in a moment of crisis, and in danger of loss, rather than respond with strength, principle and authority, they throw the "kitchen sink" at the issue, abandoning principles and frantically strewing innuendo as they do so.

With powerful moral force, it names exactly what the Clinton camp is doing, and anchors it both to the politics of the past Administration, and to the very political tactics that Clinton herself has denounced and disavowed. It provides direct evidence--thus far, the only direct evidence--of how a Clinton Administration would likely govern in times of chaos, crisis, and other "3 a.m. moments" (thus disempowering her already shaky claims to superior foreign policy judgment): With a "kitchen sink" approach of tumultuous, changing, disorganized and contradictory attack, rather than with consistent purpose and moral authority.

Obama must persistently name what the Clinton camp is doing rather than complain, and he must then link it to the very essence of an old politics that has been lived through by all of us, and denigrated by most, over the past 8 years.

Thus named, and thus defined, Obama can then invite Clinton up to the higher ground--to a debate based on policy and principle--or she can choose to stay in the box that she and her camp have created.

Brendan, Tina Fey doesn't work on SNL, anymore. She's on "30 Rock." And I think Fred Armison's Obama is every bit as good as Poehler's Hillary.

"This job is a !$&*#!!ing ballbuster." Hi-larious.

WOW! All of you are taking this WAY too seriously. It is a comedy skit, nothing more. Y'all need to get a life.

The skit is poking fun at Hillary, not Obama. Loved the line about Bill!

Look...I agree with an earlier statement-"This is humor folks...that's all!"

Whether SNL has a pro-Clinton agenda or not, this is funny! And to allow something like this to influence our decision for the White House shows something about a person's ability or lack of, to vote for who we think is the best person to lead our country!

Look beyond the humor...it's always going to be there!

Another SNL skit:

"It's 3 am, across our country kids are asleep...'' the narrator says. The phone rings.

The voice on the other end says, "President Hillary, Pres. Chavez called you a "monster."

President Hillary: "What? No one calls me a monster & gets away with it! Get me the Secretary of Defense on the line right now. I want air strikes to begin immediately!"

These comment pages reinforce big media's and big politco's opinions that people are just plain stupid.
Pro Clinton? Mind changing? Tina Fey sucks?

Rubes.

Saturday Night Live has gone too far in their endorsement of Hillary Clinton. I will not watch a show bent on helping the Clintons destroy the United States of America.

Funny. I don't think this was against either candidate. It was supposed to show Hillary portraying an unfair look t Obama. So it hit Obama on experience and Hillary on class/truthfulness.

Im surprised most of the people commenting here can READ let along form sentences.

This is first of all satire. Second, as REED pointed out it was satirizing Hillary Clinton's stance and ridiculous claim that Obama would be unprepared.

seriously, people ... are you that stupid? this skit was clearly sarcastically poking fun at hillary's nonsensical talking point about experience.

then again, i'm not surprised that hillary supporters think the skit was pro-hillary. after all, the polling data clearly indicates that hillary supporters are less educated and less intelligent than obama supporters. but seriously, if you couldn't figure out that it was sarcasm, you probably shouldn't be allowed to vote.

mr. silva: It's spelled "yourself." What, doesn't the Trib have spell check?

I can't believe people actually thought that was a pro-Hillary skit. SNL is spoofing her negative campaign attacks, showing a fictional Hillary stooping to depths of portraying a very unrealistically unenlightened Barack Obama. It was very clear to me that the skit was spoofing her 3 a.m. ad, as if to say "does she really expect us to believe this?" But apparently -- at least judging by this comment thread -- a lot of people do.

I think the skit (I haven't seen it) would be much funnier if the first call was followed up by another call, this one from Bill "Honey, the meeting ran a little late, I don't think I'll make it home tonight."

Dear Tribune,

Can we focus more on news stories instead of Babyboomer television shows that haven't been culturally relevant since the 1970s?

It would have been funnier if she handed the phone over and said, "Bill, its for you."

I like saturday nigh live but when they start to make obama look stupid on their show that is not a joke. There are jokes that are funning there are some jokes that are tasteless and this is one of them. SNL has not endorse Hillary but surely they are doing it more in a way that surpass endorsement. I think they know quite well by doing this type of joke is not only campaigning for Hillary but making her experience factor as a comedy but it is not. I Remember when this type of jokes were made against all the former presidential candidate and they end up either losing the primary or the presidential. So SNL put a cap to it.

How in the world can this spoof be supportive of either candidate? It's presenting a Hillary ad as astoundingly over-the-top in contrasting her savvy versus his - - according to HER campaign ad, naturally.

I like Hillary's sweetness-and-light statement about helping the President.... because she's just serving the interests of all Americans.

And the President's claim about how she is SO knowledgable about the mightiest and also the most mundane matters that he confronts.

Apparently claims about vast wisdom, concerning matters both mundane and mighty, truly is claimed ... by the dude in Pyongyang. So if Hillary's 'claim' appeared in an actual ad, instead of in a spoof, how would that claim reflect on Ms. Rodham?

Shouldn't be a surprise that SNL/NBC and it's links to GE and the military industrial complex support Hillary. She is on their payroll.

Obama is my first choice but who really cares. As long as John McSame doesn't win.

SNL is based in NYC, and Hillary did move there to get into politics. So, it makes sense they would support their "hometown" candidate.

The real scare is this close race might actually help the Republicans. Texas and Ohio likely gave the Republicans a chance in this election.

The longer the Clinton's and Obama battle it out, the more it helps the Republicans.

A better skit would have been Hillary receiving a call at 3 am and telling the caller to hold because she's finishing up her taxes and asks the caller a tax question, then she gets another call and ask that person to hold and the other line is some women asking if Billy is there.

SNL is not coming up with anything new. This sounds a variation of the Carter skit where he is talking some kid off a drug high.

SNL is a lame show running lame sketches. Why wate time watching? They'll rerun the bits on the news.
SNL is not worth being angry at. The cast will be doing dinner theater in 5 years, or doing the dishes.

I don't know .. maybe ask Lorne Michael's what his objectives are. Could it be that he's donated $ to Mr. McCain ...in the 2nd Quarter of last year?

http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/neighbors.php?type=name&lname=Michaels&fname=Lorne&search=Search

The 3am phone call ad was ridiculous. This fodder gets pulled out every presidential election by a desperate candidate looking to scare up the ignorant masses.
Being a good politician and being a good president are not the same thing.
Vote Obama.

Of course SNL wants Hillary to win the elections.

Amy Poehler is much funnier as Hillary Clinton than Fred Arminsen is as Barack Obama.

I doubt it goes any deeper than that.

omg - this skit is SO TRUE! That'll be exactly what we're in for if Obama becomes president. That's why we NEED Hillary! She's the candidate to beat...and she's way more qualified than Obama (or McCain). VOTE HILLARY!!!

O:Is Bill there?
C:It's 3am, what do you think?

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

I'm not sure where a lot of the rhetoric about Obama being unelectable is coming from. Like many moderate republicans, I plan on voting for Obama in the general election, should he be the democratic nominee. But also like many moderate Republicans, I will not vote for any ticket led by Clinton.

Jeeze.. you people really are idiots. This is SATIRE -- and it was poking fun at Hillary, not Obama. Dumbasses.

Sigh... Are the elections so pathetic, we read deep messages in an SNL skit? Or is the media so pathetic, they'll convince us there's a bloody story to be had in everything exiting a candidate's mouth? Or are we all so pathetic, we can't see past the daily onslaught of lies to see what's actually happening on the planet?

Regardless, we're all in big trouble and these candidates wont save us.

It doesn't take an SNL skit to make o'bammy look stupid.

I just hope that if the time does come to restart the furnace, he presses the correct button instead of launching a nuclear strike somewhere.

That's what we would get with Hillary as president - the long-suffering, know-it-all mom thing.

you hillary supporters who think this skit is 'So True!' and 'why we need her in the white house' ... are you watching the same thing that I am? it's obviously a rip on Hillary's behavior... not a comment on what Obama would be like as president. Are you capable of complex thought at all??

if Hillary is President due to woman votes who will join her Admin in White House, Bill is eagarly waiting for each of them infact he is already pre-screening them in primaries. Its possible only in USA to allow same Bill get second series of BLOWS. Hats off ladies!!! I am available.

Race should be preferred but it should not bite back at you. YOU ARE WARNED.

Where was Hillary during this crisis since she likes to claim the co-presidency thing?

"Hillary Clinton, Not So Good on Genocide

By Marc Cooper, Huffington Post. Posted March 8, 2008.

Obama adviser Samantha Power exposed the Clinton administration's indifference to genocide -- she got the boot for stating it on the campaign trail. Tools

The Barack Obama campaign is about to pay a very high price for the inopportune words of one of its most distinguished foreign policy advisors. The dazzlingly brilliant journalist, Pulitzer-prize winning author, and Harvard professor, Samantha Power, has been forced to resign from the campaign after she recklessly told a reporter that Hillary Clinton is a "monster."

In the pungently hypocritical game of American politics, this is just something outside the rules. Whether it's true, or not, matters little. Nor does it matter that the object of Power's derision has just finished spending millions on TV ads implying that Obama would be responsible for the countless deaths of millions of American children sleeping at 3 a.m. Tut, tut. Nothing monstrous about that.

Power was rightfully awarded the Pulitzer for her finely written and downright horrifying book A Problem From Hell which, in macabre detail, describes the calculated indifference of the Clinton administration when 800,000 Rwandans were being systematically butchered. The red phone rang and rang and rang again. I don't know where Hillary was then. But her husband and his entire experienced foreign policy team -- from the brass in the Pentagon to the congenitally feckless Secretary of State Warren Christopher -- just let it ring.

And as more than one researcher has amply documented the case, the bloody paralysis of the Clinton administration in the face of the Rwandan genocide owed not at all to a lack of information, but rather to a lack of will. A reviewer of Power's book for The New York Times, perhaps summed it up best, saying that the picture of Clinton that emerges from this reading is that of an "amoral narcissist."

Former Canadian General Romeo Dallaire, who commanded the UN forces in Rwanda at the time of the genocide, tells us a similar story in his own memoir. General Dallaire recounts how, at the height of the Rwandan holocaust, he got a phone call from a Clinton administration staffer who wanted to know how many Rwandans had already died, how many were refugees and how many were internally displaced. Writes Dallaire: "He told me that his estimates indicated that it would take the deaths of 85,000 Rwandans to justify the risking of the life of one American soldier." Eventually, ten times that many would die. And our response? A handful of years later, at a photo-op stopover in Kigali airport, Bill Clinton bit his lip and said he was sorry.

Therein resides the richest and saddest irony of all. Samantha Power has actually lived the sort of life that Hillary Clinton's campaign staff has, for public consumption, invented for its candidate. Though not quite 40 years old, Power has spent no time on any Wal-Mart boards but has rather dedicated her entire adult life rather tirelessly to championing humanitarian causes. She has spoken up when others were silent. She took great personal risks during the Balkan wars to witness and record and denounce the carnage (She reported that Bill Clinton intervened against the Serbs only when he felt he was losing personal credibility as a result of his inaction. "I'm getting creamed," Power quoted the then-President saying as he fretted over global consternation over his own hesitation to act).

We gave Power the Pulitzer for exposing the, well, monstrous indifference of the Clinton administration as it stared unblinkingly and immobile into the face of massive horror. But we give her a kick in the backside and throw her out the door when she has the temerity to publicly restate all that in one impolite word. Monstrous, indeed."

Propaganda or Satire? If SNL wants to be satirical, I'm all for this. But I have some ideas for Tina Fey for some other sketches:

1. Hilary finding a differnt voice every five minutes. Crying Hillary. Angry Hillary. Sarcastic Hillary. Even Elvis Hillary.

2. Hillary getting the phone call at 3am... a bomb is headed toward Florida from a Russian warship. Hillary springs into action calling prime minister Putin, presses play on a cassette player with "Young and the Restless" background music to her 3 minute "I'm the victim" guilt trip. Putin has enough and pacifies her by diverting the missiles to Cuba. A smug Hillary hangs up in a self-congratulatory.

Then again, if this is supposed to be propaganda and not satire, I guess we can keep characterizing the only one between the three candidates left who can seem to keep emotions in check as the one who would panic at a phone call.

SNL uses satire to make comedic points. Within satire often there is a basis of truth that can be exagerated. What is most concerning is that the mainstream media, Chicago Tribune included, has given such a free pass to Obama that has made the SNL skits relevant. Start doing your job and the SNL skits lose there effect.

OMG, you people are idoits. The skit was making fun of Hillary's ridiculous commercials. I feel sad if the people voting can't understand a SNL skit.

Saturday night live sucks and Clinton is a Monster...

Kit S., I'd rather have an experienced "long-suffering
know-it-all mom thing" than an adolescent whose spiritual advisor is Wright (Wrong!) by way of Farrakhan. If they have shaped his thinking on the Mideast,we're in a helluva mess.

found this on the Huffington Post- SNL Writer is a right Wing Republican!!

by Adam McKay

Live from New York...Vote Hillary!
Posted March 5, 2008 | 11:58 PM (EST)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's face it, the Republicans love Hillary Clinton. They quietly in their heart of hearts pine for her to win the Democratic nomination. The Republican Governor of Florida is rolling out the red carpet for a second primary which will favor Clinton. Pat Buchanan can't be quiet about how much he respects Hillary. Even Ann Coulter pal and SNL sketch writer Jim Downey has written several sketches portraying Hillary as picked on by the press. Downey is one of the all time great sketch writers but I know he's no Hillary fan. Don't get me wrong, I like Hillary and still think Bill Clinton is one of our great presidents. But it's weird. Weird like....well, Pat Buchanan praising Hillary Clinton.

Now it's possible the corporate right wants her to win in order to keep afloat the huge economy of Hillary hate bumper stickers that if my numbers are correct generates over 55 billion dollars in revenue for the south.* They also could be supporting her because after over seven years of the absolute incompetence that is the Bush administration they finally get that corporate welfare and tax breaks for millionaires are not good for the economy. Or maybe they think she's Hilary Swank.

But more likely, in fact, screw it, for sure, they are backing her the way I root for Nenad Krstic to cover Keven Garnett so the Big Ticket can put up twenty and twenty on him.

And yes, it's sad that someone as capable as Hillary would be considered fodder for McCain, a "don't change horses in mid-stream, even when it takes that horse twelve years to cross that stream" kind of guy. Senator McCain just got the thumbs up from Bush. Isn't an endorsement from W like a job reference from that astronaut chick who lost it and wore diapers? Well, she is an astronaut and Bush is president.

The biggest upside of this whole thing is that SNL has clearly still got clout even in this day of a thousand channels and a billion internet sites. They influenced a primary for F's sake. That's big. Now I wrote for the show in the nineties and it's an incredible place that's actually as exciting as it seems like it would be. I've seen SNL have incredible political influence in a good way (Dennis Miller's line about Reagan: "It scares me when the finger nearest the button has a string tied around it.") and a bad way (Portraying Bush and Gore as equally buffoonish in their debates. Bush was an embarrassment and the sketch made people think they were in the same ballpark.). It's had its left wing writers like Al Franken and it's right-wing writers like Jim Downey, who also wrote those Bush-Gore debates sketches. Franken is now running for the Senate and Downey is spinning primaries.

There's no doubt our nation's comedic TV political coverage between SNL, the Daily Show and the Colbert Report is far better than the straight news. And though that's a pithy and tired observation, it's also stone cold, for better or for worse, true.

So put your bumper stickers on your cars Repubs: "Hillary in '08, Up Until November, and then McCain!" If you drive an Excursion it'll fit."

You’d think Saturday Night Live would have learned after that ill-timed and irresponsible “Branch Dav-idiots” remark, SNL made during the Waco standoff. Of course, SNL couldn’t know that the Clintons would call Janet Reno to the White House the following Sunday. As you may recall, the situation ended badly: http://theseedsof9-11.com

I have to say you people are insane. I don't know what is funnier...the skit or you bozos who respond as if this were anything more than comedy. Tell me guys...who does Spungebob support?

SNL was on the "money the second" week in a row on the Obama-Clinton skits. ROTFL. While we’re on the SNL subject, wasn’t that cartoon last week with the Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton so funny? Encore! Encore! SNL is seeing the real picture in a humorous way. Lighten up Obama fans… you have to laugh a little at this kind of stuff. Every president and nominee, for the last 30 years, has gone through the fire of SNL…

SNL has been politically biased for decades. Sadly, it hasn't been funny in decades.

I was a great skit. I knew people would think of it as having an "influence," but honestly, do any of you know one single person who has changed their mind due to this (or any other) SNL skit? I don't.

I think people should start considering a McCain/Clinton ticket...

President Obama - get used to it folks.

The kid in the ad that aired wants Obama to answer the phone. Hillary has proved by her campaign and her actions to be unstable under pressure.

when was the last time SNL was socially relevant and worth watching on saturday night? the 70's? not appealing to new generation...

Obama has experience all right.....dealing in shady Chicago politics with slumlord moneymen.

Judy K., unfortunately it seems you underestimate the damage that long-suffering, know-it-all moms have done to the image of women in leadership. Hillary as the first woman president would be a tragic setback for all of us.

Get real people. It was not a great skit. It was mean spirited and nasty and just not funny. Which is probably why, if you were listening, almost nobody in the audience was laughing.

Does SNL have an anti-Obama bias? Maybe, maybe not, but regardless the prior 2 opening skits were funny, very funny.

Why blame Tina Fey? She was guest host when the first anti-Obama skit aired and it is assumed that she wrote it (since it was well written, unlike the last one). I have not seen anything to confirm her role in any of the skits.

By the way, last night's skit would have been more timely if it had been about "monster Hillary".

SNL is not funny when it is being so one sided and becoming a wing of one camp.

The skit was obviously making fun of Hillary and not Obama. Her ad campaign was ridiculous and the skit acted out how ridiculous it was. Hiring Hillary because of her "experience" is like hiring her because she knows how to work the white house furnace. You don't need this fabled "experience" to handle the problems that come along.

I was actually amused by how harsh they've been about Hillary. Guess I watched it differently than most.

Hello? The skit lampoons Hillary, it doesn't support her. Does anyone have a brain out there?

NOT FUNNY. THE FUNNY PART IS THAT BILL IS NOT IN BED WITH HER, WHICH IS PROBABLY THE MOST TRUE PART OF THE WHOLE SKIT.
GO OBAMA, YOU WILL WIN DESPITE SHOW BIZ COMMERCIALS AND POOR SKETCH WRITING.

kg, here's the reality for Bill re Hillary's supporters, most of whom are 'mature' women: once a female goes beyond being a young, impressionable babe and attains to a certain point in her understanding of life, she's not interested in pathetic narcissists like Bill . . . his only hope will be the little nurses once his heart starts to give out

This is comedy people. Relax. If you're seriously angered, you've lost your grip on reality.

Hysterical! Funny skit SNL!

They still have the Second City magic!

It was a good skit but it was way too long.

Senator Clinton’s central argument is that she is the better leader, “ready on day one,” as she says. Doesn’t a leader select leaders who can win and hold the confidence of their fellow soldiers? Here President Bush failed terribly, and we are left with the consequences of his missteps. The campaign that Senator Clinton and Barack are engaged in, has many parallels to a military campaign, as in selection of leaders, mapping of strategy and tactics, deployment of resources, etc.. Mr. Penn is the man Senator Clinton selected to head her campaign. His selection has led to misstep after misstep and, as everybody knows, to great dissatisfaction and turmoil within in her campaign. Stubbornly, like Bush, she will not acknowledge errors and refuses to replace him. She supports, as President Bush did too, mediocrity over excellence.

Like President Bush, the Clinton team planned for a quick war and has scrambled to recover since Iowa. They have had to improvise and counter punch, and, ultimately resort to a negative campaign to make up for lost time and to camouflage a bad plan
In caucuses they have proven to be close to incompetent because they did not prepare adequately for this most democratic of all selection processes. To explain away their poor preparation, they attack the caucus as a means of selecting leaders. Compare Hillary with Barak on all the points mentioned here. Quite a wake-up call.

Here are the facts
After all the primaries are done, Obama will need 35% of the super delegates to put him over the top. What does that mean? That means if we do a redo in Florida and Michigan, then he won't need any Superdelegates to put him over the top because even losing Florida and Michigan by 25 points would hand him the nomination. If the Clinton's don't see that, they are not smart enough to run this country.

Saturday Night Live is back!
This reminds me of the original when they would satirize Ford and Carter. Everyone is fair game.

The skit is hysterical, and it is a TREMENDOUS slam on Barack Obama. He is not ready to be President.
Hillary Clinton 2008

Bruce Y,

I agree with you somewhat, and never thought of it that way: Oprah supporting Obama, Bush supporting McCain...but SNL making a theme of biased Hillary support, is no better than FOX news channel saying "fair and balanced".
Is Tina F. the senior writer or what?...we know where she stands...fine, let's move on...Hillary's support of GOP candidate McCain over Obama (in terms of experinece) is another shameless attempt to pull out all stops to win the nomination, at the expense of the Democratic party...wow, a real team player, and she has mentioned him as a running mate...sounds like both sides of the mouth to me.

Clinton=Business as Usual

Don't blast my candidate in his own back yard. Don't you "mentally challegened" yahoos dare move South! Even we retarded Southerners had enough "marbles" to vote for Obama. However, we don't depend on TV for our information.

It's not too late! Get out and vote for Hillary - this skit emphasizes why we need her in the White House.

Boy, Monique, you must be a real dope. I hope you're hot because your cognitive skills are clearly lacking.

Is it just me, or people only pay attention to SNL in election years? Saturday Night Live is an unfunny, overhyped show that should have been cancelled years ago. I don't know why the show gets so much attention in the media. Besides, the skit wasn't even funny. The last three shows featured some kind of pro-Hillary skit. Can you say hometown bias?

SNKKK's real problem is it treats its Black talent like crap. One of the reasons it can't attract and hold good talent. So no I wasn't surprised they had no black actors around to play Obama. The show was thinking Hillary all the time. Like Bush was always thinking of occupying Iraq. And then Hillary didn't read the NIE. And hoped the bankruptcy bill she voted for wouldn't pass...and the poor people who make up her base and support her stay poor so they vote for her again.

I think it's funny how if people keep saying over and over that Barack is not ready to be president, it somehow must be true! Even though he has MUCH MORE legislative experience that Hillary Clinton. It's insane!
I am threw with SNL forever. They have lost a loyal fan. I think this is low down and dirty, and I think it's even more disgusting that SNL's comedy writers are allowed on some level to have a say in American politics. Thank GOD they weren't on air all this time, And I can't believe they had the nerve to try and speak for those of us whom have already cast their vote for Barack. NO, I don't feel like I made a mistake, I think those that voted for the "Clintons" did! SNL is clearly one sided, and are doing everything possible to help Hillary. I think it's time they took SNL off the air.
OBAMA 08'!

What I heard is Clinton telling Obama to call our allies then press the red button in the White House.

There are 9 States in the USA, with populations over 10,000,000. Hillary was won "all of them," with the exception of Pennsylvania (wait and see), and Illinois, which is Obama's home State, and where Blacks voted for him by a margin of 94%. Did any of you Obama supporters know this? Did you realize, if you counted the population of these 8 States alone, and took into account that Hillary won 1/2 of the States with less than a pop. of 10 million, but over 6 million, she would have far more than 1/2 the population of the country. That happens to be another way of counting wins/losses, that you haven't considered. Looking at the abysmal stupidity in evidence here, almost all of it coming from angry Obama supporters, who mistakenly took this silly SNL skit to be anti-Obama, if Obama wins, we're screwed. Even polls are now showing that close to a third of Americans say that Obama has gotten a free pass from media, he has vastly more money, media interminably and mercilessly spread every lie and distortion they can about her, polls lie about her chances, overstating them in some cases, understating them in others, .....and still she wins. But, I'll admit, she usually only wins in States that actually have some people in them. Hillary's losses are greatest, almost entirely, in States with "less" than 1/50 of the population of the country; 6 of Obama's wins are in States with less than 1/100th of the population of the country; 6, in States with populations less than 1/200th of the pop.; about 10 of Obama wins, are in States and areas, with populations 1/4 of 1% of the population. Media doesn't mention any of this, does it? The more republican the State, the more likely it is to vote for Obama. Is anyone on this list dumb enough to believe that nearly half all of the Independents and almost all the republicans that crossed over and pretended to be for Obama, will not vote for McCain in November? You are fools indeed, if you believe polls, most of which are sponsored by the same mainstream media, that you yourselves are constantly telling each other, are spreading nothing but lies and confusion. Media are presently engaged in the scam, of pretending that McCain is a joke, and that Obama will beat him, handily, in November. In truth, destroying Hillary has been the principal goal of media. Because of your brainlessness and pathetic credulity, they've all but succeeded.

what snl is still on the air? well they are a little biased i see.
i was a edwards supporter when this all started. i felt he had the best command of the issues. his only faux paux was the iraq war vote. Edwards made a very contrite, sincere apology to us all especially us dems. hillary's "apology" was lame, insincere. you can see when it comes up in interviews or debates she barely apoligizes. it's kind of cliche by now but it is the worst foreign policy blunder in u.s. history. i get a sense of hubris from her that reminds me of bush. her tactics didn't bother me until she spoke recently how herself and john mccain were BOTH capable of being president due to "their" experience. so one of our democratic candidates is touting the sure republican challenger for president over the democrat that is slightly in the lead and could be our nominee for president. it's outrageous. with democrats like her, who needs republicans. wake up and smell the coffee hillary supporters. we shouldn't support anyone that would do this. obama has every right now to expose all the dirt that the right wing groups have just waiting for her if she gets the nomination. monica lewinsky, paula, jennifer, can't manage her own husband how can she manage the world they'll say. whitewater, vince foster, so what if it's lies it will bring the evangelicals out to vote against the clintons. marc rich and other pardons they are already making inquiry's to use in the general. obama hasn't gone there but he could and the republicans will! think dems! how is she going to handle those attacks? she has had it easy. obama is trying not to go there.it's to his credit that he hasn't.
she doesn't deserve our support. we are about to blow the general election. the most important one that i can remember in my 52 yrs of being a loyal democrat.

I am done watching SNL. I have watched it for 20 years and felt it was intelligent humor but this year it feels like a 90 minute Hillary commercial each week. Not that they care, but they have lost this viewer. I will continue to watch some of the other political comedy shows that take jabs at all the politicians, not just promote one candidate.

SNL is out of control and is as old and as pathetic as Hellary. They must be neo-cons.

had you told me hillary clinton would be making the statement about experience and touting the republican over a fellow dem i'd of never believed it. there it is though. she said it.
hillary supporters please give this some thought. this is over the line and never justified. you can talk negatively about your democratic opponent but you never endorse your republican opponent. she's a divider not a uniter. ring a bell. i've been a democrate all my 52yrs and i'll vote for whoever our candidate is over mcBush. if it's hillary i'll have a sour look on my face when i do.
i'm afraid that all the young people that obama has brought in (what could be a generation of democrats) won't vote at all and might be lost to us in the future. i was an edwards supporter but i am for obama now.

Its a joke. A lot of you need to got a life.

Actually, I interpreted this skit as being pro-Obama. Clearly he is far more intelligent and savvy than the skit shows. Does anybody really believe that we need a president who knows how to light the furnace pilot light in the White House???

The skit even says "I'm Hilary Clinton and I approved this incredibly unfair ad."

I agree -- give me a president who has good judgement and is willing to listen to all the points of view, rather than a president that is "owned" by lobbiests and the pharmaceutical companies, any day!

Clinton raised $35 million in her best month, mostly from a few oil companies, drug companies and PACs.

Obama raised $55 million in one month, from individuals, with 90% of the donations being $100 or less. More than 50% of the donations were $25 or less. Well over a million people have donated to Obama's campaign so far.

What does that tell you about who each candidate is accountable to??

Isn't it time we had a democracy again, instead of a country controlled by a few conglomerates?

Susan

Proud Member of Women for Obama

Whoever the writer was for this bit was tricky. They had to not look like they were biased for Hillary by making Obama look foolish. I have always enjoyed SNL but I had to turn the channel after I saw this skit. It was not funny. Clinton supporters think it is funny. It does not make sense to make a joke out of Obama being stupid. Who was this writer? Is Lorne Michaels running the show anymore? This is not cutting edge it is MadTV dumbass humour. The actors and comedians are great but someone has a ridiculous ax to grind. When comedy is seen as transparent criticism trying to look like it has deeper meaning, then it is just an embarrassing flop. The show does not know how to deal with Obama. The actor should just act like frankenstein Obama since he obviously only knows how to speak in one word imitations. They used still photos because he can't do the impression. Freakin Embarrasssiiing!!!

SNL has gone too far this time. This type of behavior will backfire. An obscure TV show cannot decide who the next president should be. Obama is winning and it is too late to stop this movement of change.
Go Barack

l

One word: SATIRE

1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

The humorless need a more clinical understanding.

Both were getting it. I never watch SNL anymore, and caught this little gem by accident.

Neville Chamberlain believed Hitler and Obama will believe the Iranian frontman for the Mullahs who want us all destroyed. Many a truth is portrayed in satire. This is one frightening example

Hillary supporters declaring Obama is not fit because of Farakkhan and Rezko. Yes, I suppose it is an entirely NEW concept that people can connect candidates to shady figures. I'm pretty sure, however, that his wife would be in bed right next to Obama if the roles in this skit were reversed. Where the heck is Bill anyway? He's not there, because no one in America can even picture those to in the same bed together.

to put things in perspective, Obama=no experience. Hillary=experienced but with negatives from people who hated Bill because his action good for the country (such as work for benefit) stepped on the nerve of special interests left and right. As an independent voter, my choice is clear, a company won't hire an inexperience CEO just to gamble he may be good and he promised hope to the company. The tremdous responsibility of president and the complicated government machine needs a better hand than 0 experience. If Obama is nominated, I will vote for McCain.

It was a hilarious sketch.

My favorite piece was Hil telling Bar to have the Secretary of State explain the situation to him.

"Al Sharpton? Between, you, me, and the lamp--not my best appointment."

Ha!

Go Hillary!

I think Hillary has good ideas and policies she wants. But her ability to pass them has been compromised a long time ago unfortunately. Obama on then other hand has the charisma and the knowledge to get what he wants done. I wish the two would work together more I think as a team they would be great, with Obama as the leader of this team.

A funnier skit might be what would happen if the 3 a.m. call was answered by Michelle Obama or Bill Clinton as each's spouse slept. Michelle or Bill might call for air strikes. LOL

Scary! See how fast she is to use that red button?!?!?

These post are scary

Rush Limbaugh's dittoheads are doing more for Hillary's comeback than any SNL satire ever could.

It's 2008 and people are talking about SNL?

this is a very stupid and childish act. Hillary should learn to deal with issues, why do we want a president who can barely handle common rivalry. i just dnt get it. now it's my turn to return that comment you said about obama to you Hillary "shame on you" you talking abt experience, really what experience do you have..... i dnt get it. grow up and let a more matured mind rule us.

If I have said it once I'll say it again. Obama doesn't have the experience enough to get through many of the chrisis ahead.

Now there is also the worry that Jessie Jackson and others like him will make this a black and white thing.

We need to unite efforts. So the many crisis at hand amongs my hopes that there is a lot of healing between all races. Some white people are being held responsible for what others have done.

My family wasn't among them. We were a working class family that struggle during the depression meant simple survival.

I am apalled at some peoples idea that we owe them for their slavery... G E T O V E R I T !!!

My family history had slavery in it too... I am not asking Germany and Egypt for compensation... It is a cop out and screaming "I am an idiot whom can't think to save myself so heres it Whites pay!!! ha ha ha ha ha (this attitude isn't what made this country strong!

I have had as good a laugh reading these comments as I did watching the skit, but then I can distinguish comedy from reality & think on my own!

This is the United States of America. Free speech of all kinds (even the speech we
"hate") is part of our system and, I hope, will always be part of our system. I fear for our system, however, when I read these crazy comments that seem to denigrate free speech. Repression is NOT a good idea, folks.

I find it even more amusing that the HRC supporters (obviously) don't get the joke at all. "Hee hee hee, yeah! SNL is right! Hillary for Prez!"
Makes me wonder...
If the average American chooses to rely on SNL to get the facts of the next presidental race then lord help us.

To every doofus who wrote in with outrage about bias and slant and irreverent humor in this display of commercial entertainment:

What if there was no slant, no bias? What if they were just taking humourous shots at politicians without respect to stance A or position B? If one politican comes out looking bad then they've done their job well in the spirit true satire (c.f. Juvenal) and have, in fact, taken a stance. But if both sides come out looking foolish- as this skit did- then its mere lampooning. The joke is on both of them and on anyone else whose hackles are raised.

This thread ought to be Exhibit 1 in a list of reasons why democrats are the dumber species.

SNL just isn't funny anymore. I only watched it because Amy Adams was on (yum). Mostly, the show was a bore.

The show is no longer a credible source of satire as their political support for Hillary is obvious.

They bascially re-ran the same debate sketch two weeks in a row.

The Daily Show and Steven Colbert are far more even-handed and a whole lot funnier.

I saw the skit and it was great except it omitted one thing and that was Clinton calling McCain for real advice. He is the only one with fortitude to handle these things if an when they happened. I
wouldn't want Obama making a decision about cooking a pie!!!!

Wow. You guys need to learn the word "satire." This is not supporting Hillary, it's downright mocking her.

13.1 Million – Obama; 12.5 Million Clinton; or 49 to 47
Delegates: 1,374, 1,232; or 142 delegate lead by Obama. What Obama supporters seem not to want to accept or perhaps even see is that 12.5 million people have voted for Clinton. We didn’t need the 3:00 AM commercial; nor SNL to help us decide the votes. We decided this long ago and during months of the Hillary bashing and favoritism to Obama by ALL the media. Face it Obama supporters, not all of us are for your candidate. A 2% lead does not constitute an Obama sweep of the nation. 12.5 million for Clinton is a lot of people. Also it might interest you all to know, the national poll Clinton vs McCain, Clinton leads Obama in that as well.

The race is not over yet.

WHO STILL WATCHES SNL ANYMORE ANYWAYS?????

The M&M ticket is truly a dream ticket, too bad the dream is actually a nightmare for the democrats.

the Monster & the Muslim ticket - or Muslim and the Monster if you prefer -should have an M&M as a campaign button.

Some would say an M&M with nuts inside.

Neither one of them has ANY real experience. And that clinton woman is indeed a monster who cannot be trusted in any way shape or form. She will do just about naything to steal the nomination from Obama.

Look at her, clinton is not
1)from chicago but rather from the tony little upper middle class suburb of Park Ridge
2)not a New Yorker
3)has no relevant direct experience
4)Never actually held a real job other than being a lawyer shmoozing off her husbands political coattails
5)Did not grow up as a Yankees fan - in Chicago, yeah right!

clinton, you know what they say, if you can't even keep your own dog on your own front porch,,, how the heck do you expect to be President?

hillary clinton should drop her political ambitions and go back to doing what she apparently knows how to do so well (sic) trading cattle futures and running a travel agency.

It's not that SNL presented the skit it's the selective rerunning and side commentary/interpretation by "main stream" media that is the issue.

Why are they not replaying another clip during the news segment of SNL where the they quote Hillary after the Ohio primary, "I've just started" with the question of...If she's ready to lead on Day 1, how is it that she's just getting started after 31 primaries.

Let's face it. Hillary got to the national stage on her 'significant others' coat tails and now she's trying to ride Obama to the White House by offering him a place on her ticket in an attempt to gain voters who want that combination.

This election will not destroy the democratic party, it will define it. If that definition does not include the young voter in this country that are not afraid to support the best candidate (for the uninformed that would be Obama) a third party of the future could be the answer.

I echo some of the previous comments. This is a comedy show that parodies topical subjects. The only side SNL is taking here is the side of humor. Come on, Obama supporters---where is your sense of humor? Lighten up already.

SNL is right on! Obama's people have questionable tactics.
A close relative of mine, who is an Obama supporter, and I were discussing coffee as I avoid talking about the election with him since I support Hillary. I respect everyone's choice in candidates and do not think it is my place to question a person's choice. Anyway, he said that he wouldn't go into a Starbucks if there were black people in there because they were probably holding the place up. I asked him what was different about putting a black man in the White House than going into a Starbucks with black people. He couldn't answer except that Obama was half white. I was shocked as I thought this campaign should be about the best qualified and not about race, gender, lies, the spouses and who is slicker. America we are better than this!

Where was Bill?

Am I the only one who noticed that Bill was AWOL at 3 a.m.?

Maybe he was getting a glass of milk??

Even in siding with Clinton, SNL can't hide the naked truth about a Clinton Presidency.

The truth is, if that 3 a.m. call came to a President Hillary Clinton, she and Bill would be looking at a poll instead of what's right.

That's how they helped get us into Iraq.

And if John McCain got the call, he'd be re-fighting Vietnam.

That's why he's still railing against "surrender."

For all you that resent any SNL "endorsement" of Clinton, you are as one-sided in your thinking as Obama is. I guess it's ok for Oprah to endorse Obama though. Please.

Obama is crooked, he is a deceitful politian, and if you read the Sunday NY Times, you will see, he's done NOTHING in the Senate that's not entirely safe, because he went into the Senate wanting to be President. He is trully an empty suit.

I was truly disgusted - wonder why they are allowed to be so biased - what happened to "the equal time"?

This skit does not have any meaning other than that SNL has shamelessly endorsed Hillary and that's their prerogative.

I just wanted to say I agree with this comment.

"I'm just amazed at how SNL has come out for Hillary, and even more amazed that people are actually allowing SNL to influence their votes."

I am sorry SNL has gone so biased -the show used to be funny.

...Secretary of State Al Sharpton! That was absolutely hilarious!! Great Skit!

Do people seriously believe that SNL was trying to knowck Obama? The whole point was to laugh at the entire stupidity of this "Obama isn't experienced" nonsense. Some people have obviousaly bought her smear campaign. How naive!

You people that keep acting like this is somehow akin to SNL endorsing Hillary do realize that this is a joke right?? It's meant to satirize Hillary's bragadocious, self-enititlement just as much as it is Obama's naivete', probably more so.

I sincerly doubt that SNL has the power to influence votes, especially now. Hopefully, the people watching the show understand that it is satire, not reality. Those of you who worry about celebrities influencing votes should think about Oprah. She indeed does have that influencing power. Look out, Hilary, and goodbye! What about McCain?

Has everyone forgotten the close ties that the Clintons have to the film and entertainment industry? It's not surprising that the Clintons would call in any chips thay have in desperation, but it is surproising that Lorne would allow his show to be so blatant.

The focus should be on 12:50AM...here is why

Senator Clinton’s "red-phone ad" basically ask who you should trust at 3 AM, that is ironic considering the Resolution for Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq passed the Senate after midnight early Friday morning at 12:50 AM on October 11th, 2002.

Is her position that judgment improves after an additional hour and ten minutes of sleep? In her Senate Floor Speech, Senator Clinton noted, “This is a very difficult vote. This is probably the hardest decision I have ever had to make -- any vote that may lead to war should be hard -- but I cast it with conviction.” Thus her vote was recorded as a “Yeah” and the Resolution passed at 12:50 AM. So when you consider who to trust on National Security, consider the real record of late night decisions.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=107&session=2&vote=00237

With her huge resume of foreign experience hilary will make a fine secretary of state. Why waste such stellar qualifications?

The only people voting Hilary over Obama are the slightly crusty old people who think doing so will bring back the Bill Clinton glory days. People, you aren't going to bring back the Bill Clinton Years anymore then you will bring back your youth and faded looks. You need to get over it and join the future.

Amy Peoler needs to remove herself from Hillary Clinton's butt.
She could have had a really funny sketch about the Bosnia "mispeaks" similar to what they did to Kerry flip flops, but instead she continues to use the one sided "the press is against Hillary" theme.
I can laugh at a funny pro-Hillary sketch, but this is camapigning, not comdedy.
I won't be watching SNL anytime soon.
Tina Fey can bite me as well.
