Al Gore, the Nobel Prize-winning former vice president and Democratic nominee for president in 2000 who won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College, contends that those who doubt global warming -- and he counts Vice President Dick Cheney in that crowd -- remind him of those who doubt that man landed on the moon or who believed the world is flat.
These are among the declarations that the Democratic warrior against climate change (and an ucommitted super-delegate so far this year) makes in an interview airing Sunday evening on CBS News' 60 Minutes. Another declaration: Gore, pictured right at a climate confernce in India, will use profits from his book and film, An Inconvenient Truth, to support a $300-million advertising campaign to boost awareness of global warming. Enter Toby Keith and the Dixie Chicks.
Gore, who repeatedly has ruled out another run for the White House yet is repeatedly asked the question in the midst of a protracted campagin for the Democratic nomination, speaks with Lesley Stahl in an interview airing at 7 pm EDT Sunday.
Stahl tells Gore that some prominent people, including the nation’s vice president, are not convinced that global warming is manmade.
Gore replies: “You’re talking about Dick Cheney. I think that those people are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view, they’re almost like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat.
"That demeans them a little bit, but it’s not that far off.''
Some of the ads that Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection will air will feature an ecumenical odd couple, the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Pat Robertson. as well as odd political bedfellows, Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich, and a pairing of country crooners who flank the right on left on the radio, Toby Keith and the Dixie Chicks.

Al Gore flunked out of Divinity School and never graduated from Law College because he was drinking and on drugs according to his roommate in his statements to a Tennessee Radio Station in 2,000.
He's hardly a genius and lacks the MBA that W has.
Al Gore is portrayed as an intellectual in the driveby media.
The former owner of the Weather Channel says there is no global warming and he is considering suing Gore.
Dr Roy Spencer a former NASA scientist and Alabama U professor says Gore is crazy there is no global warming his models don't show the affect of clouds that cool the earth. Spencer says on a sunny day the earth would record 145 degrees were it not for clouds.
Al Gore is responsible for a 36 day election night in 2000 and I'll personally never forgive him. He is an idiot.
His goofy light bulbs which become mandatory in 2011 have mercury in them if your dog knocked one over it would set your house on fire I'll buy them outside America when the law takes effect. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Ocean temps have stabilized and even declined in the past 5 years. Ocean temps have more to do with global temps than just about anything but the sun.
Record snowfalls occur throughout much of the United States and Asia.
Record cold occurs in much of the Norhtern Hemisphere this year too.
The Arctic: completely frozen over.
Al Gore: making millions upon million of dollars hoodwinking the masses with the corrupt media's help.
Al Gore: flies internationally not on ocmmercial jets transporting hundreds at a time, but on private jets, causing more harm to the environment.
Al Gore: learned the art of lying and distortion from his one-time bosses, the Clintons, the Bonnie and Clyde of American politics.

Terry,
The Ross Ice Shelf and others are shrinking. Ice reflects solar radiation away from the earth, to help regulate temps naturally. As it disappers more blue ocean is exposed which in turn absorbs MORE solar energy. To your second point, OK maybe the earth has cooled in the last 12 months. That only means that Global Warming has temporarily slowed. IT DOES NOT ERASE ALL THE PREVIOUS YEARS THAT SAW AN INCREASE IN GLOBAL TEMPERATURES. See that is the problem with you people. You can't use Global Warming as a term because nitwits like Jerry White or you claim that one season of cooler than average temperatures disproves the theory. The FACTS are Global temperatures have been rising for decades, more CO2 is being pumped into the air as a byproduct of man made industry, CO2 is a heat trapping gas, the upper atmosphere is warming at different rates which rules out any notion that increased solar activity is responsible for warming (so save us from your links about Mars' global warming), and thinning ozone allows more UV radiation to enter the atmosphere and this in turn makes photosythesis less efficient which means plant life, sea or land, are less able to soak up this increase in CO2 naturally.
PS I would be embarassed if half the Global Climate Change naysayers are saying the planet is cooling and the other half is saying that the planet is warming but it is doing so naturally.

That's because Johnnie Man Boobs loves to post his OPINION and try to pass it off as "fact". Just like he tried to pass off his opinion that John Edwards pays as much for his suits as Dubya does by pointing to a magazine story that said Edwards buys "expensive suits".

I think one must also take into consideration natural climate changes. Some of the Al Gore crowd thinks that climate changes have never occurred before. Nothing every stays the same. And climates of particular areas is one of them. Between roughly 800 A.D. and 1300 A.D. Europe probably went through a warming cycle. Then after 1300 A.D. it went through what is called the "Mini Ice Age" that last until the mid 1800's. We are probably going through another warming cycle assisted by man made products. But only time will tell if this is correct.

So much hatred directed at Al Gore from Republicans. I guess it's deserved, since he ignored warnings that could have prevented 9/11, and let New Orleans be destroyed and not rebuilt, and lied to start a war, and wrecked our economy. Oh wait, that's the Republican hero, George W Bush. Hmm, why the hatred for Al Gore again? He made money? Yeah, that's not something Republicans like. Any other reasons? He's trying to save mankind? Yeah, he should be hated for that I guess. It's easier than saying you disagree with him but admire him for caring.

To John that suggested that we are currently in an Ice Age. I think that is really open to debate. The closest we have come to an Ice Age is the "Mini Ice Age" that I briefly discussed in my previous post. I suggest you look it up. Although our sources can be scanty I think you will find it interesting. For example in 1780 New York Harbor froze over and people could walk on the ice between Manhattan and Staten Island.

Who takes what Al Gore says about "global warming" seriously?
Perhaps Mark Silva, after running this Gore screed, should give equal time to one of the hundreds of scientists who were at a symposium recently debunking Gore's increasingly frantic claims. I can give him the names of several scientists--which college dropout Al Gore isn't--who'd love to give a rebuttal.
But perhaps Mr. Silva realizes that Gorebaloney is so feeble that it can only survive if opposing points of view are censored.
Posted by: McCainocrat | March 27, 2008 6:19 PM
Since the Swamp never gives both sides, here's an article from today's NRO telling about a book tht Al Gore and Mark Silva don't want you to read or even know about:
"About a year ago, Canadian environmentalist and journalist Lawrence Solomon began a series of articles in the National Post examining the credentials of and arguments made by scientists and economists labeled “deniers” by various environmentalists, a number of mainstream environmental reporters, and some politicians. Solomon, true to the finest tenets of his profession, sought the truth concerning whether there was in fact a consensus on the headline-grabbing issue of global warming, or whether in fact any “real” scientists actually dissented from the Al Gore/UN line that global warming is happening, is largely caused by humans, and threatens all manner of catastrophies.
As many people — policy wonks and fellow travelers — on this blog are well aware, dissenting scientists are not in fact rare: There are serious scholars whose views should, but too often do not, inform the debate. Solomon’s columns were important because they brought this message to a wider audience. As Solomon’s knowledge grew, he found that the genre limits of newspaper writing precluded an adequately in-depth exploration of these skeptical scientists’ important observations. Accordingly, selecting some of the scientists discussed in his columns, Solomon has written a book: The Deniers: The World-Renowned Scientists Who Stood Up Against Global Warming Hysteria, Political Persecution, and Fraud**and those who are too fearful to do so. As a jacket blurb puts it, “What he found shocked him. Solomon discovered that on every “headline” global warming issue, not only were there serious scientists who dissented, consistently the dissenters were by far the more accomplished and eminent scientists.”

Posted by: Peter Ramsey | March 27, 2008 6:01 PM
Peter, this, I think, is the essence of the problem. Most of the Global Warming acolytes probably have no more than a 33.3333% chance of getting this one right. If you had included .4 percent as an answer choice, the possibility of a correct answer would have dropped to 25.0000%. The whole Scare is based on bad science, an apple to orange kind of comparison at best, NO Scientific Method applied here.
The answer, for whatever it may be worth, is that it would be on the order of 0.04%. Even if it were higher, NO ONE knows with certainty what is normal, what is too high, what would be too low. There are NO CO2 analyzers in the sky. Just totally bad, fool the sheep, here's another reason to tax you, propaganda. Amazing that this garbage has made it this far.

If solar cycle 24 is as weak as some solar physcists are predicting then, we may be in for a Dalton Minimum type cooling period over the next few decades, or possibly Maunder type minimum conditions. This would put a serious blow to Gore AGW croud. The scary part about the warming talk is the lack of discussion about cooling, which would appear to be not if, but when according the geological record. Humanity would be in far more trouble is another ice age started then even the most damaging senerio. I find it amusing how easily the people in the AGW camp have conviced the world of a pending disaster awaiting humanity, by driving their SUV (humor), with absolutely zero scientific evidence. A global climate model is not evidence, it's a nonsense without being validated against data. The only argument they need to make is to show that the 20th century warmed, (the 21st century is cooling BTW), to be convincing. The temperature record has been distorted by the urban heat island effect, which NASA has correct for the US record, which is not reported. I can go on with how foolish AGW is. The strong positive feedback mechanisms required for the IPPC predictions to bare out suggest the earths climate is highly unstable, which is just nonsense because it's been its current state more or less for several billions years through massive events like volcanic eurption and meteorite impacts.

Here's one Al Gore and the others refuse to answer because they have no answer: Why are the poles of Mars getting warmer by about the same amount as Earth??? Surely, we're not messing with Mars too! LOL
Same with some other planets, but Mars is in the neighborhood and rocky.
Then it turns out, some of their data is very bad: they tried to claim that a "recent" year (1998?) was the hottest on record; the revised numbers show something MUCH different.
What a hoax! And the vast majority have bought it. ROFL
Posted by: William B. | March 28, 2008 2:55 AM
William B., I can answer that question because I've actually seen a Global Warming Nut say it: Mars is warming because the warming on planet Earth is causing Mars to warm.
Anyway, from about the mid 1300s to mid 1800s, Earth went through what the scientists call a "mini ice age." Scientists believe the mini ice age occurred because sunspot activity was low during that time.
Now all the Global Warming enthusiasts like to point out how Earth has warmed by about 1 degree C., or as Dumb Dumb Janet and the rest of the brain-dead Loons like to think -- 34 degrees F. So, we know the mini ice age ended in the mid 1800s and the planet's temps have warmed about a degree since the mini ice age ended.
Also, scientists say in the past 20+ years sunspot activity has been pretty active, which many say accounts for the warmer temps. More sunspot activity means more radiation entering the atmosphere. Hence, temps on Earth AND Mars have risen lately!
Now, many scientists say that sunspot activity in the past year has waned. What else has happened in the past year? Global temperatures have stabilized and even decreased a tad.
In the past year, places like Buenes Aires have seen snow. Cape Town, South Africa saw snow. Many countries in South America had record cold last year. This has been one of the harshest winters for many parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
La Nina, cooling of the Pacific waters off the South American coast (watch BC write that South America in no way is anywhere near the Pacific Ocean!!), has been in effect this past winter, which usually means colder temps. It also means that the Atlantic may have a more active hurricane season this summer. During a La Nina the prevailing westerlies are weaker, which makes it easier for hurricanes to form in the Atlantic. During El Ninos, usually the hurricane season in the Atlantic is quieter because the westerlies are stronger, which tend to shear the storms that form tropical storms.
But all the intracacies of weather on planet Earth are lost on the perpetually ignorant and most worthless of all creatures: the Loons on the Left.
Posted by: John D | March 28, 2008 9:21 AM
So we should believe Al's version of events simply because that's what the majority believe? By that logic, going into Iraq was the right decision because 80% of the public thought it was the right decision. I'm not saying Gore is wrong. I just think his "argument" here is sloppy and lazy.

Posted by: William B. | March 28, 2008 2:55 AM
You're implying that the sun is the cause of this warming aren't you? Well if that were true than why on Earth, literally, has the lower atmosphere warmed and the upper atmospere cooled. That's not what a hotter sun would do. If you increased the output from the sun, you increast the amount of energy that arives at the top of Earth's atmosphere and you get heating throughout the whole column.

I've always doubted that Republicans would trust anything Al Gore said. Al could come out with a campaign stating that earth is spherical, and the Republicans would accuse him of bias and conspiracy, and say that earth is really flat.
But, at least he is showing how moronic the far-right is when they deny the science behind global warming.
Posted by: Markus | March 31, 2008 7:35 AM
Gore has to just parrot what his sources tell him; he's not bright enough to understand the science himself.
While there was, at one time, some reasonable basis for accepting the possibility of significant manmade global warming, those days are long gone. Somebody better tell Al before he looks like a complete fool.
As the science gets better, the global warmers are getting more strident, and losing support in the scientific community.
