You could probably have figured this out without a poll, but, well, that's what polls do sometimes, confirm what we know. And a fresh CNN/Opinion Research poll cuts right to the key issue now that the clock is nearing happy hour here on the West Coast: How do the beer and wine votes break down?
The answer: Beer drinkers are leaning Red, while wine drinkers are tipping toward Blue. Yep, beer drinkers give a slight nod to the presumptive Republican candidate, John McCain, in the fall match-up, while the wine sippers are leaning toward either Democrat, Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
We didn't delve into the subgroups deeply enough to figure out where the scotch drinkers go, but apparently the hard liquor folks don't vote. [Oh, put a cork in it, we're kidding].
But even here there's a further Democratic divide. As CNN reports, registered voters opting for beer over wine also pick McCain by 53 percent to 46 percent over Clinton. McCain and Obama, though, are essentially tied. But "in the head-to-head match-ups with McCain, Sens. Obama and Clinton each win a majority among registered voters who prefer wine to beer."
By the way, the margin of error was plus or minus 6.5 percent, which makes this a 13-proof poll. And it brings out a whole new approach to the "get out the vote" efforts, or GOTV: BYOB.

Beer-based politics hasn't worked out too good, has it?
I see the Trib shows its bias by not asking a single non-drinker for their opinion. As a non-drinker, I vote Democrat.

The funny thing is that the 'beers' preferred by our McCain lovers are those fine brews like Miller Lite, Bud Light, Pabst, etc...
Real beer drinkers won't touch that swill. On the way home from work tonight, I'll stop by Chef Paul's in Lisle for a couple of pints. An Aventinus Weizenbock sounds pretty good.
McCain's losers can crawl back under their doublewide and pass out with their Coors Light. Prosit!

Everything that's wrong with American politics....
BTW, the whole Beer/Kerry/Bush affair was a real low for our 'democracy'.
1. Kerry was the only one you could have a beer with 'cause GWB is alcoholic; Can't hold his likker.
2. Kerry shoulda challenged GWB to a drinking contest.
3. Some bright bulb must have figured this out and retro-actively changed the question to "beer OR COFFEE" (!?)

From Sneed's column in the other paper.
Can you imagine if this came from Chelsea Clinton?
The foam at the mouthers would be in full foam mode!
I kinda like her brashness.
How's this for a first daughter in the White House: GOP presidential contender John McCain'sdaughter, Meghan McCain, 23, told GQ magazine she likes the style of stripper Dita Von Teese, bisexual dating shows, guys with tattoos and Bud Light.

Let's see - the biggest spread is 53 to 46, with a 6.5% margin of error. So, this is barely statistically significant. The fact that it is the dumbest election story this year so far is probably more significant then the results.

This qualifies as printable news?
Also, it seems like it's taking a hit at beer lovers. Why is wine the sophisticated drink these days? Beer's process is more difficult than wine's. Just wondering.

I seriously hope you're kidding me with this. We've all witnessed the effects of the "Who would you rather have a beer with?" question. No wonder the American public hates the mainstream media more and more every day.
Incredible.

This information is garbage. Red states may like "beer" if by "beer" you mean the fizzy water you find in Budweiser, Miller Lite, Coors, or Rolling Rock bottles. Sam Adams is the only brew fit for true Lefty Loon patriots.

What do you expect from chardonnay sipin' buying arugula and balsamic vinegar at Whole Foods Volvo driving NPR listing alterna-dorks?

I’m with weinerdog on that one. Have you tried the brew that’s made by Guinness? Can’t think of the name offhand, but it’s an excellent brew.

this is the dumbest article i have seen in a while. good one, Silva! I will be toasting my Guinness to Obama later on!

Could you be referring to "Smithwicks"? It is the oldest brewed beer in Irleand, dating form 1710. Purchased by Guiness about 20 years ago.
Very tasty.

Maybe we should look at which candidate, if they were to win, would most likely drive you to drink.

The only thing dumber than this story is the posters who are ripping beer or wine drinkers because of it.

Ah, the beer snobs are out in force.
A "real" beer drinker wouldn't be caught dead spending $6 for a pint of poorly-made snobby microbrew. Probably has "winter" on the label and a "berry" aftertaste. Pfff...
This "real" beer drinking snob probably only drinks when it's socially expedient to show off his "knowledge" to his equally snobby friends.
Give me a bud or an old style (Miller lite or Pabst'll do to).
The funny thing is, if you go to Europe, the beer "snobs" there sip 5-euro Budweisers while trashing the local brew (meanwhile the above beer snob is probably citing the Euro-snob's downtrodden local beer brewmaster's name to his yuppie friends in a tastefully boring pub on Rush Street).

Totally not true. If they drink Budweiser, then it's the original Budweiser from Budweis, Czech Republic. An excellent beer I might add...
I prefer my German beer, brewed under the purity law of 1516.
Not being snobby, i just like good beer.
Why settle for less?
p.s. I vote Democrat.

You are all losing sight of what is important here; I drink beer, wine, and hard likker. It's all good, man...

Top Ten Signs Bush is drunk;
10. He's making up words
9. He's giving a foreign policy address
8. Badmouthing Iran
7. Reading a book to grade schoolers
6. Singing and doing a soft shoe dance in front of the national press
5. You are having that beer with him, see, and suddenly he gets like real aggressive and in your face and a fist fight erupts!
4. He proposes marriage to you
3. Dons cheerleading garb, cheesy Bowery Boys hat, and grabs an old fashioned analog megaphone
2. Gets a human aura about him
1. Thinks our economy is the envy of the world

CHUCK,
I think it was a Hamm's I first lifted from my dad, out of the fridge. He always votes Dem. It was a hot summers day long ago, and without a doubt the best beer I ever tasted. I enjoyed it behind the garage along with a stolen Camel. And with a jingle like this one, how could you NOT enjoy it. These were accompanied by a funny cartoon involving the Hamm's bear I think.
♬
From the Land of Sky Blue Waters,
From the land of pines, lofty balsams,
Comes the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Brewed where nature works her wonders,
Aged for many moons, gently mellowed,
Hamm's the beer refreshing,♪
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
From across the rippling water,
Through the whisp'ring pines and birches,
Comes the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Comes a call to cool enchantment,
Comes a call to cool refreshment,
Hamm's the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Hints of lakes and sunset breezes,
Dance and sparkle in each glassful,
Hamm's the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
