Bill Richardson's tough call, short of endorsement: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Scott Martelle

He came close. Oh, so close. But Bill Richardson stopped just short Monday of endorsing one of his former competitors for the Democratic presidential nomination -- a coy game he's played before.

Speaking at a conference on rogue states and diplomacy at the UCLA Ronald W. Burkle Center for International Relations, Richardson was asked by moderator Maggie Farley, who covers the United Nations for The Los Angeles Times, who he thought was best able to handle both the domestic and international challenges facing America.

Richardson, as New Mexico governor, is a Democratic Party superdelegate, and he demurred on the question. But his answer still served as tea leaves to be read.

"I'm truly conflicted," Richardson said. "I'm torn. I see ... a lot of loyalty I owe President Clinton. He made me U.N. ambassador. He made me secretary of energy. He's treated me extremely well. But you know what? I paid him back. Because I served well."

Richardson described Hillary Clinton as "enormously capable ... but I did run against her."

Then he focused on Barack Obama, someone he said "I don't know as well. But I think there's
something that is very special about this guy, that is good."

Richardson related an anecdote from one of the debates:

He had fielded a question and then, as the next point went to another candidate, leaned toward Obama next to him on the stage and whispered, "'Boy some of these debates really boring, aren't they?' Or something like that. And he said, 'Oh god, yeah, you're right.' "

As the two were whispering, a question suddenly veered back to Richardson -- who hadn't been paying attention. "I looked at Obama and he says [whispering] 'Katrina. Katrina.' And I go back and say, 'Well, my three-point plan on Katrina is ...'

"Obama could have thrown me under the bus. But he didn't. So I said, 'Thanks, Obama,' and he said, 'Just listen next time.'"

So is that enough to draw Richardson's endorsement?

"There is something about him that has inspired a lot of people. I'm kind of torn there.... I will endorse someone."

Richardson criticized the role the superdelegates will play in the decision, saying that the nomination should be decided by voters.

But he also teased, saying the media -- which he believes gave him scant attention during his campaign for the nomination -- now are interested in his endorsement

. "You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to ride my horse in New Mexico. I'm going to spend time with my family. I'm going to grow my ugly beard. And I'm going to make you wait."

So what does Richardson, an experienced diplomat, gain by waiting? He hasn't burned any bridges when one or the other likely presidential nominees starts looking for vice presidential candidates and Cabinet secretaries.

That's a nice story, and it doesn't surprise me that Obama would do something decent like that. The gut feeling of decency I get from Obama is one of the reasons I voted for him in our primary. Now I'll wait for the brigade to talk about my naive, cultist worship of Saint Obama.

Whatever Richardson or any of the voters decide, I sure hope it's based on more than simply a good feeling about the candidate... Voters and especidally superdelegates should be able to clearly delineate why they feel confidence and why they support their candidate, rather than a feeling! They should be looking at the facts, what evidence exists to prove the candidate will deliver on what they promise.

I don't believe you are naive at all. It's exhausting and depressing to listen to negativity all the time from your government. The United States is a great country. We constantly hear that if you work hard you can make "IT." We all want to believe that. We hope for that. Most of us are hard workers. Most of us are kind and generous. I'm tired of the Washington negative them against us mentality. We are all in "this" together and need to change the climate.

"So what does Richardson, an experienced diplomat, gain by waiting? He hasn't burned any bridges when one or the other likely presidential nominees starts looking for vice presidential candidates and Cabinet secretaries."

On the other hand, his endorsement really isn't going to influence the remaining primaries. He and Edwards become more irrelevant by the day and, when they finally do pick a side, they won't be doing either candidate any real favors.

It's refreshing to hear someone speak positively about both candidates - a rarity these days when things have gotten so polarized. Sounds like Richardson wants to support Obama but feels torn because of previous loyalty to the Clintons. He should do the right thing: support the candidate that best represents change and a break from the old politics of fear, power mongering, and back room deals - and we all know who that is!

Obama brings decency and dignity back into politics at a time when we need it most. I am so SICK of attacks and smears and partisan hacks. Ours is a great country, yet our politicians fight and bicker like petulant kids. Whatever your affiliation, we ALL deserve better from our government. At least Obama believes in bringing factions together, unlike the others...

I bet you anything that Clinton would've just shrugged and looked away. Kudos to Obama for being the only remaining candidate who practices what they preach.

Great story - I wish Bill and Edwards would just get off the fence and endorse Obama already. Hillary is a narcissistic liar who is not fit to be CiC.

Another "Hussein"!!! bill r. doesn't know what he started.

But what about Edwards' delegates that he won? Will they go for Obama?

Looks like Bill is getting ready to be named Secretary of State in the Obama administration.

If what he seems to be is what he is, then Obama is a special person who deserves our attention. I am a Clinton supporter and a reluctant admirer of McCain, but I am focusing on this new face. I want to know if Obama is the one we have been waiting for: a true uniter and voice of reason in this conflict-ridden country (and world).

Forget Clinton, my dream ticket has always been Obama/Richardson.

Bill Richardson did serve the country well under the Clinton Administration. I see him doing the same for an Obama Administration.

The longer Bill Richardson waits to make an endorsement, the less impact it will have on the election.

Bill Richardson smokes too much crack!!! He and the NY Governor should get together and go to the whorehouse for a dose of reality

True competitors can be sorted into two general classes: marathon and roller derby. The marathon competitor runs without attempting to run the fastest runners off the road. The roller derby competitor wins only by forcing others off track. Yes, you can win either race by tripping your competitors - but no one likes to play in the sandbox when there is one spoiled child throwing sand. Although I am a lifelong Democrat, I cannot support Clinton or any other person who never learned to play nice. I just worry that Obama might prove that "nice guys finish last".

you hit it right in the money. obama is a decent guy. sure he's a smooth talker, he is a lawyer and politican after all. but he does genuinely seem decent and he's trying to run a civil, decent campaign but "THE OTHERS" just won't let him. ironic how I was a hillary clinton supporter and even voted for her but after all this gutter campaigning, i am definitely for BARACK OBAMA.

Obama is a good human being. I am glad Mr.Richardson admitted it. While some people want blood, some want unity, progress, and care for all.

Richardson and all you other Obama supporters better educate yourselves, read about Obama's ties to Radicals in his church, who have ties to Syrian crooks and Iraq. Read about his mentor according to his book, also a radical. What are you willing to put this country through! Rezko ( Obama's friend ) in jail and Obamas name already mention in shady deals with shady foreigners.V

Obama will make a wonderful President,it is his divine timing and the Clinton's with all their evil schemes won't be able to dim this bright light.

Obama has said over and over that he can bring people together. He has proved that in the successes he has had, even, winning in the small states where one has to be more organized to win.

He is not about being combative for the sake of being combative.

That is what the country needs at this time. Even the tone of Hillary's voice, puts one on edge.

I can not see Hillary having successes on foreign policy. She thinks fighting is the only way to win and get what you want.

Like Obama said with her previous health care, she fought the drug companies, congress and the insurances companies. Yet with all of that she lost, because she was fighting with everyone rather than trying to reason in a way to get people on her side.

She does not have the people skills needed to be number one in charge to begin turning this country around.

Bad judgments and bad people skills is what got the us in this bad place remember...

It’s bad when, over a 6 months period I think, the feds will have put approx. $400 billion into the U S banks, yet stores are still closing at a rapid rate etc.

The U S can not hold on with the band-aids much longer...

Another fluff piece. Back to reality. With his whopping two years of federal experience and profound lack of substance in foreign relations, economic policy and every other critical area, Obama's plan for America includes:

1) Immediately fleeing from Iraq to make life easier for terrorists;

2) Raising taxes in the midst of a sluggish economy to create bigger government and more social programs;

3) Opening borders to encourage more illegal immigration to bankrupt America's border states and major cities;

4) Continuing his support of hate in America through friendships with racists Louis Farrakhan and Jeremiah Wright, and domestic terrorist Bill Ayers.

Obama is not only a buffoon, he's dangerous.

Richardson would make an excellent VP. The top of any list.

The one qualified candidate that had the experience of holding an executive position and had known credible foreign policy experience was alienated for a good feeling. No matter how you look at it now, we have a choice of three slimy politicians for the highest office in the land. The only one closest to center is the republican. Go figure?

Yes, Tig Andrews, Barack Obama is a very dangerous person, a slithering snake and has everyone charmed. With his chrisma, he reminds me of Jim Jones. His followers WORSHIPPED him like they are doing the "Almighty Obama". He is the New Deliverer.

Without question, Obama has a first-rate mind. After 7+ years of being led by a 4th rate mind, this is truly refreshing. If he's a decent man too, and this is just another small indication that's the fact, then he may well be worth all the hype surrounding him. The more I know of him (and yes, I'm aware of Rezko, etc.), the more impressed I am with this man. Actually, he reminds me of another man from Illinois, Adlai Stevenson.

In response to: "Whatever Richardson or any of the voters decide, I sure hope it's based on more than simply a good feeling about the candidate... "

I had a "gut feeling" when Bush was running the first time that he was not the smartest candidate. In the second election, when his debate answers all seemed pre-written for him and didn't even apply to the questions, I had an even stronger feeling he was a few cards short of a full deck. I think now the majority will agree with me.

My feelings about Obama are that he is intelligent, honest and sincere. I, for one, am going to listen to that "feeling" this time around.

Obama/Richardson that sounds like a good ticket. I think Hillary should run for Governor of NY. It sounds like the criteria to be a NY Governor is that of liar and bottom feeder. She fits the criteria well. Besides her husband and Eliot have a lot in common too. Obama 08!! (oh and I am a white woman and registered republican)

Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson we'd be the true dream ticket. They both have the experience and intelligence, whereas Obama does not.

Hello, Richardson not only was running against Hillary but he was also running against Obama. I think something is being misquoted here.

Who won Texas? I keep reading that Clinton did, but every chart I see shows it as 92-92 in delegate counts, with the caucus results to be announced on March 29. Everyone pretty much expects Obama to win the caucuses, handily.

1) HILLARY IS A RACIST FOR NOT FIRING FERRARO FOR THJOSE RACIST REMARKS, AND 2)NOT FIREING WILLIAMS FOR DEFENDING FERRARO.

BT\Y THE WAY SHE HAD A CHEATING HUSBAND IN HERE LIFE, DOES THAT MEAN SHE'S NOR FOR THE RESIGNATION OF ELLIOT SPITZER?

the "scandals" of rezko and bill ayers pale in comparison to any other major candidate. where are you people on norman hsu? how about the puerto rican terrorists who were pardoned by president clinton at the insistence of senator clinton? a little shady mining deal with kazakhstan maybe? or how about claiming to be the most vetted candidate but refusing to release the very documents that are required to even begin that vetting process?

give me a break.

the whole "cult" thing - get over yourselves. you sound like a bunch of crybabies who keep getting picked last for the kickball game and instead of admitting that you're not that good you point at the athletic black kid and call him names.

The refusal of Clinton to seperate herself from Ferraro shows that Ferraro is just antoher goon in a Clinton campaign that has become a monster out of control in attempting to divide the democratic party based on race and gender in an attempt to convince people that she should be given an election that she has clearly lost.

Now, after these attacks that are splitting the democratic party and alienating African Americans in the party (a major part of the party), only an endorsement from leaders like Bill Richardson, John Edwards, and Al Gore for Barack Obama and against these terrible remarks can unify the party in the right direction.

IT IS the Clinton camp that has resorted to dividing the party based on race and gender. She has used the very thing that party is against to try and get an advantage in an election THAT IS ALREADY OVER AND SHE LOST; a low move by ANYONE in the Democratic party. We need to come together against the campaign that has used such tactics, and only endorsements from Bill Richardson, John Edwards, and Al Gore can do that and put an end to this CLINTON CAMPAIGN OUT OF CONTROL.

This is one of the most civil blogs in recent memory (save for the venom reserved for 2 or 3 posters). I suppose it might just be too early for a lot of the nasties to emerge, but it is nice to have some thoughtful and sincere thoughts. We should keep the volume turned down and everyone might be happer in the end.

I am a minority and I suppose it is not politically correct to say that "race" is a very relevant issue. How confused am I in noticing that blacks have been voting along Purely Racial lines? No other group seem to be doing that!

Hmmm, I think I could actually support an Obama/Richardson ticket. Looking at the options, that is palatable.

Clinton may be a "fighter" but aren't we all tired of that? Obama is a "UNITER". Most of us in America are moderate, practical people looking to compromise and work towards the common good. Enough with the "let's go fight against the other party" politics, and start working for constructive change.

Richardson is smart to not burn any bridges. He feels, similar to most of the country, that Obama seems to be a sincere and decent person. We all know that politics and power changes people. Obama is not immune to this change. His attitudes and beliefs have already started to change...

Bill R. was one of the people I liked while viewing the campaign process - I liked the article and hopes he goes with his gut feeling and side with Obama. I am amazed at the people who stick with the Clinton's. Either they have dirt on a lot of people (a lot of dirt) or they are memorized by the effects of Billary.
I am a Republican, who will vote for Obama if he is nominated. I feel he is the best choice we have at this time. Let's get behind him and get the US put in the right direction once again!
OBAMA in 08!
It's not too late.

Gus,
I'm very confident that Obama is the best person for the job, not only for USA but the whole world at current stage.
Eventhough, he may still turn out not to be "the one", Obama surly is closest we have, and the most decent of the remaining 3.

I think the fluffy character of Obama will not serve us well long term....when Ferraro said he would not be where he is today if he were white, unfortunately she is right. Look at Edwards..he offered the most detailed and precise plans of action for all the major issues facing our country and his own party ignored this dynamic leader for the first major woman and the first major African-American. Edwards would have succeeded as president like Bill Clinton did for 8 great years without the baggage. No we have a nice pleasant Senator of 2 years who regularly voted "present" over 100 times in the Illinois senate rather that get on record on the major issues. He is articulate..so is Clinton, he is smart so is Clinton, he is eager, so is Clinton, He had virtually no experience, but Clinton does. He had neve weathered the worst of politics in DC but Clinton has. He promises a new day without specifics, but Clinton lays out distinct plans. And yet we are enamoured with him becuse he is a male, tall, stiking looking, deep voiced, and BLACK. All that he is ..can be said of Edwards, Richardson, Biden, and others, andthey had far more experience. legislative successes, and many long held alliances...bu tthey are not BLACK. Ferraro is right....unfortunately.

If you read about Obama, there is plenty out here, you might wonder if he is another Malcomb X. What out America!

So, you're basing your vote on the candidate who claims that he can bring people together? Seems to me the last guy who did that was W and look where that got us. Electing Obama, with his complete lack of experience and simplistic view of how the world works (hmm, sounds like W there, too) would be another huge mistake.

Obama is a dangerous man who could sell a chocolate Ice Cream to a man in white gloves and laugh evilly as the man walks away. I don't understand how all of his supporters can't see how fake he is. I could see through it from day one. When he's giving those famous speeches listen to how he speaks...if he's in the South he speaks like a "good ol' southern boy" preacher amening to the congragation in his best Southern drawl. If he's in the Northern states he's a complete northerner speaking very proper. I will not vote for this man and if you think the U.S. is bad now....just wait till all you Obama supporters put him in office..You will be kicking yourselves. He won't win anyway..McCain will. I have never voted Republican but if Obama wins the nomination I will be casting my first Republican vote for John McCain and I'm not the only democrat who will. I just hope all will break from the Obama induced coma and come to your senses.

Methinks Richardson would like to be VP and since no clear nominee has emerged, he is keeping his endorsement close to his chest. If Obama had clearly emerged, Richardson would have long dumped Clinton, after all he "paid him back" by serving well! If it were clearly Hillary, then by watching superbowl with her husband and generally remaining friendly to them, he just might get the spot. Unfortunately for Richardson, this might just backfire. If Hillary is the nominee, she looks to me like she'll correctly interpret Richardson's prevarication and won't give it to him. As for Obama, I don't know how perceptive he is. But I believe Hillary is better qualified and will also be the stronger of the two for the November elections going by the states they each have won.

When is the last time we had a candidate as brilliant as Barack Obama?
I'm tired of electing puppets whose strings are pulled by special interest.
From the bottom up!Yes we can!

It's nice to take the vitriol off and talk about things as they are. And I am swayed by Obama's decency, something I see lacking in Clinton, who seems to care only about winning, rather than the truth or the good of the party or the country.

Where do you get this information? Is DR Bush your Mentor? OR Did you just wake up from your Moronic dreams!

YES SHE CAN!

I find it ironic that Republicans mock the "Cult of Obama" when hardly a day passes without prominent Republicans uttering prayers to their infallible St. Reagan.

I just want to point out the negative comments towards Hillary Clinton even among these few comments. I'm not any more in favor of the ones against Barack, but it is especially bothersome to hear people advocating unity and togetherness out of one side of their mouths and spewing bile out of the other side. If this is how badly his supporters play with others, then how can we expect them not to alienate the independents and the anti-bush republicans? How are they going to bring anybody together? By sneering at them? By trumpeting their own superiority and progressive taste?

I dislike Clinton's tactics, but I dislike Obama's supporters.

I keep hearing that Clinton won all the big states. I thought what mattered was the popular votes, the # of pledged delegates and the # of states won. Why is this getting to be rocket science?

That was very nice of Bill Richardson. I also believe that Obama is a good person. I also think Hilary is a good person, just that she is caught up on winning. We must come together or else the republicans will will. We must not continue to throw darts at each other. We have a great chance to change the future. I also think John McCain is a person who cares about america. But I think Barak would bring us all together. He does not have the type of experience and contacts that would enable him to cover up thing in Washington.

Of course he`s being coy. He`s on top of everyone`s VP list. He`ll go with the winner and he`ll get interviewed by the winner. Doesn`t mean he will necessarily get the job, but he is Latino and should Obama not go with Hillary, who he considers, likeable ENOUGH, wink, wink, then Richardson climbs to the top of the list.

I'm not a fan of Hillary, but the shine's come off of Barak's apple for me.

For all his talk of hope and change, he's just another Chicago democrat, and I refuse to vote for any of those, again.

Someone tell me what sort of change he brought to Illinois?

Endorsing Stroger was change we could believe in?

Endorsing Blago was change?

The only thing Barak's ever changed has been his address.

And, where's Michelle been lately? Someone finally realize they need to put a muzzle on that political anchor, eh?

Face it, Barak's nothing more than a smooth, polished lump off the same heap.

Lots of double standards. Read what deon ganesh said above. Says a lot

Why do people say Hillary won Texas?

Obama Delegates
Primary 71
Caucus 38
Total 109

Hillary
Primary 77
Caucus 29
Total 106

Doesn't this mean Obama took Texas?

I have heard the good feelings statement many times which in many cases it never worked out. That shows you how naive the public can be.

Can't we just accept the fact that most Democrats consider both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to be acceptable choices? There is no need to psychoanalyze potential endorsements beyond that. It is only unfortunate that Hillary's fight to overcome Obama may turn some Democrats against him, and others against her.

If you want another tyrant, divisive person in office then Hillary is your girl.

How can Ferraro say it's because he's blk. He grew up poor in a single family household, while Clinton grew up in an affluent household w/ both parents. He put himself through 2 Ivy League education, and was vote President at Harvard Law Review, Clinton married a white guy that did good 4 the economy and now she's a presidential candidate.
No one knew Obama, and everyone worked against him but he worked his way to the top through descency, honesty and as a uniter, now his peers respect him. Clinton's peers still dislike her.

I think it is clinton that has gotten the preferential treatment. If she had not married Bill, no one would even care. Nancy Pelosi would've had a better chance than Clinton if she hadn't married Bill.

funny that the person who says race has helped Barack, like it has been SOOOOOO helpful to other blacks through history, is the person who can't spell-idiot

It doesn't surprise me that Obama would tell what the question was. It goes to basic decency and honesty. That is probably why he doesn't want to get down in Hillary's gutter. He has a reputation of being willing to play fair, and negotiate compromises in order to achieve at least part of whhat is desired, so it can be revisited later to try again without alienating the other side. Compare that with Hillary's "my way or the highway" method which paints her opponents as evil, ignorant, etc.

To the gut who says that Barrack has ties to terrorists, the people like him who supported our invasion and have been wrong about EVERYTHING for the past 5 years, no longer have the right to predict things ok? I've been to Iraq 2 times now to fight for the fiasco that idiots like him and our retarded ...I refuse to say President, have created. Just remember you all, that 9 times out of 10, the guy who talks like him is a complete coward who would never go and actually fight the war he is so in favor of. To go on, despite the Hollywood sets made for TV where you see little george dressed up in his little flight suit, the majority of us who have actually fought think he is a complete joke. Do we respect Senator McCain? Absolutely. Alot of us also think he might actually be a little crazy though. Not stupid like bush, but a little crazy. WE SUPPORT SENATOR OBAMA. And to set it straight, the "terrorists" now in Iraq are there due to our policies, they had nothing to do with 9/11. NOTHING. And they weren't there before. So next time you her our national embarrassment say that we are fighting "Al Quada,,,and other extremists," just know that means guys that hate us because we've invaded their country but we'd better make sound like hijackers so we don't look more pathetic than we already do. Seriously, I'm asking people to please support Barrack and help us regain the respect that has been lost around the world, especially in the Middle East. SF

In order to maintain a more perfect democracy superdelegates should always vote for the candidate with the most pledged delegates; if not you are saying that the people are wrong...which is anti-democratic...i feel they should get rid of the super-delegate system next time...

richardson should be ashamed of himself being sensationalizing his endorsement. he is on his vested interest sensing for a winner so at least he could have some space for his ground. you would rather shut your grinds, and stay in the cave till your beard reach the ground.
is that an example you want to play to people, ungratefullness. richardson is a very shallow person i would say, because he is getting carried away by a kenyan magic spell.

I'm still trying to figure out how calling Hillary a monster is either inaccurate or inappropriate. Her campaign clearly will say anything to win... from the inane arguments about Florida and Michigan to race baiting by her surrogates to irrational arguments about how winning the base in big states is more important than winning independents everywhere. Her claims about NAFTA are silly and disingenuous and worse, her self-inflated experience comes from hosting tea parties as the wife of an elected official. She has already lost the primary by any rational standard and yet she persists to make these flawed arguments as she tries in every way possible to draw Obama down into the political gutter that is her life. Monster... seems like a fairly descriptive illustrative term to me...

It seems the only one capable of running for public office would be Jesus Christ, and he's a liberal! The GOP would have a field day! He would want the war in Iraq to end right away I suppose? The hungry would be fed with a few loaves of bread and some fish, but, that would be considered an entitlement program! He's have to raise a lot of money and a lot of preachers would not support him because of his liberal views! How far we've come..........

Obama did win Texas, just not by Clinton's rules.Obama should have won Ohio, the people don't like being out of work, why vote for clinton. Regen, old bush' and both Clintons pushed and passed NAFTA. go figure.

I'll take INTEGRITY any day over experience.

I used to like McCain, that was before he sold his soul to the Republican machine.

Hilary won't stop piling the negative attacks on the one guy who is choosing to remain PEACEFUL and DECENT. Its as if she continues to smack him in the face, knowing that Obama will continue to turn the other cheek. WAKE UP AMERICA. Realize that only sheep (uneducated persons) are swayed by NEGATIVITY and FEAR (ie BUSH SUPPORTERS).

Look at the actions people, vote for INTEGRITY, vote for Obama. The country needs a strong dose of integrity.

McCain is more of a war monger than Bush
John Edwards is more qualified, and has less shady dealings than Obama or Hilary. And Ron Paul is the only candidate willing to take on the big guys and make a difference with the economy, civil liberties, and non-aggression in foreign states.

The media is wrapping these candidates up with a little bow and tag that says x y and z soundbyte-that is what I am about. It's not true. Most of what the commentators have said here on this blog are not true. Obama has not brought change to Chicago. Hilary will not polarize the democratic party Feraro was right about Obama getting alot of support because he is male and has a unique upbringing and a charming look about him. And many blacks are voting on racial lines. Many of Ron Paul's supporters have not realized how radically his proposed changes would affect the country Everyone else is scared to talk about the economy. And Edwards didn't have a chance because he ran against a women and a black man. McCain will do as much damage, if not more than Bush did-and he caved on torture, of all people. he lost all his credibility right then and there. not to mention all the horrible things he has done in his personal life, and sexual harassment and fraternization, while married, with his subordinates

I backed Richardson for President, and hoped there would be a spot (maybe VP) for him in Hillary's administration, but if he is going to play this game, then forget him. If he thinks he can stay on the fence until the dust settles and then jump on the winning side, I really hope his little ploy blows up in his face. Where would Bill Richardson be today, politically, if it were not for Bill Clinton? As a New Mexican, Governor, I am ashamed of you. You should have endorsed Hillary a long time ago. If you can't do that, just go ride your horse and keep you mouth shut. Shame on you, Bill Richardson.

Everyone should forget about the race and just for vote who ever you think is best. Some of the comments that come from people mouth should be slap out by God. It no time in this country for all the backbiting America should be love and togetherness. But for so long this country has been divide now we a have someone about change and people is still so low down. I wish God can just slap each one with bad thought and negative every they open they mouth. A guess most of the people do not have love or Christ like in their heart. I feel very sorry for the people on judgement day when they have to come before God it is so sad.

What worries me is the reliance on many Obama supporters on the nebulous innate undefinable qualities he demonstrates. They don't necessarily know it, they feel it for Obama.

The last candidate to win a national election because he just seemed nicer and the kind guy you would want to hand around with...in other words, on presonality...was named George W. Bush.

So do we have what admittedly are a lot of people leading us down a similar path?

I think people need to vote more with their head than their heart.

I'm old enough to know that the pretty facade doesn't always front the best choice. Look behind the facade before you choose.

I WAS torn, but not any more. Take out the broomstick and fly away, because I, for one, would like a fresh idea or two on how to get us out of this mess. I believe Obama will do his best to make that happen.

God doen't like ungly. It seems the ungly tactics used by Hillary seem to fall back and her harm. It appears that Obama is trying so hard to run a positive program. The incident mentioned by Richardson at the debate was beautiful display of character. I don,t think Hillary would have passed the test.

i am quite turned off by the viciousness of most of the comments here. they reflect the extreme negativity of the people who made those posts. as citizens of a great nation, i expect some decency from the minds/souls of the people here. being nasty does not make anyone deserve more in terms of getting a good future president. being so negative on everything simply damns your prospect of getting anything positive. why don't we talk about issues, and avoid personal attacks?

keepers, No-it means that Clinton won the popular vote in Texas. Most likely would have won the popular vote in the majority of the caucus states. Texas is a good measuring stick for how caucus's do not always represent the popular vote. Can't you see that??

For all of you who thinks Sen. Obama doesn't have any experience. It's about ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Take a look at these links:

Every time someone compares Obama's following to a "cult" I think to myself "now there's someone who obviously voted for Bush......twice"!

Speaking as a non American looking in on the race. I am glad to see someone talk about hope and working to improve life. I am a proud Black Caribbean native and Obama has the right message. America's standard has fallen the rest of the world does not view America as the once mighty place it used to be. Go Obama god bless him and his family

Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are. There is a big difference in intelligence, decency and good training against lean and hungry looks with blind ambition...such people are dangerous.

Obama does appear to me to be a decent and honorable man who is also highly intelligent, stable, not easily ruffled, commited to having things done differently, engaging people in the price and I strongly believe the person who can bring unity to this country (and the world) at a critical time in history. As for Senator Clinton day by day she diminishes in stature by her "fighter" and "kitchen sink" mentality. This is not the behavior of a person of intergrity. By the way, the posting by Kyle, can all of that be documented? If so, why don't we hear of those types of incidents in the media? I hear about vetting for Sen Clinton, but I haven't really seen any, including tax returns. Thanks to all for participating in this process. Only as we become involved and have a leader of integrity will our country move off of the extremely perilous road it is on.

Sam, Obama did not grow up poor in a single family home. Just the opposite, he grew up in Jakarta with his mother, sisters and Step-father until he was nine or so then went to live with his mother's parents in Hawaii and attended very elite prep schools. Obama is a great Orator I will give him that. But he is also a Chicago democrat who has endorsed the epitomy of the "polical machine" also known as chicago politics. Illinois was named the third most corrupt state in the country with New Jersey and Louisanna coming just before Illinois. change? what change? Can anyone tell me what he has done for Illinois except run for president?

This is sad! Barack Obama is more than a decent man. He is a nobody by American standards!!! He is black & White inexperienced Senator, he is naïve and can’t lie even if he tries hard! He hasn’t had any extra marital affair! He is a Christian! He has some moral values!
D!!m! something got to be wrong with the N…er!!!
Hell Yeah! That‘s how low we Americans have fallen! Painful Shame! We are basically unable to distinguish a goat from a coyote! He’s nothing like the Clintons or the McCains! The guy does not meet Americans immorality standard period!
Why would we need someone in the white house who’s promising us Change, Hope and Unity ? Leave this nonsense to Abraham Lincoln who had that dream of Unity and Peace even though He was the most inexperienced President of the United States, yet the Greatest!!! Why would we need Peace in this country while deep down inside we love war and only hates it when our Sons and Daughters are dying on the battle field in some foreign country because someone claimed that “the guy almost kill my dad!” not because the guy killed closed to 4000 Americans!
Why would we need change when we saw a President totally incapable of making any right decision and yet we voted him in office twice?
Why would we like anything to change when it is so obvious that the mere idea of change bring the worst out of us, the worst resident evil, known to human kind as racism…?

The signs seem to be obvious, and it is time for history to repeat itself. Greece, Rome, France, England were the leaders once until division sneeked in and they lost their leadership. Is it time for America to release their leadership to some other powers? Obviously we’re at this corner where division is sneeking among us! It is already here and She has a name, a name only known by her followers… Be on the look out America!!!

"(Bill Richardson) also teased, saying the media -- which he believes gave him scant attention during his campaign..."

LOL.

It sounds like Richardson didn't give the media much attention, either.

I would vote for Barack for nicest candidate, most inspiring speaker, candidate I would most like to have move into my neightborhood, etc.

Unfortunately, politics has always been and will always be a tough business and Barack isn't going to change that. Jack Kennedy had many of the same qualities and he was a terrible president. Can Barack be a good PRESIDENT is the question. I personally am not at all convinced. I have issues with Hillary as well but I think she has the kind of personality to get things done in the sewer of Washington politics.

But I'd rather her and Bill live a nice safe distance away from my neighborhood while Barack is welcome to drop by anytime.

Sen Richardson,
I have never met you in my entire life but, it doesn't take much to get a sense after reading this article to feel that you're a GREAT guy. Sincerely. I went to live with my aunt and uncle after my mom was unfit and could no longer take care of me. I held onto guilt of thinking that I owed them so, I do empathise with you. I didn't want my aunt and uncle to feel that I was now disloyal by being involved in my mom's live. My uncle saw that it was tearing me apart and his simple words were "I love you. You did join gangs, you stayed in school, you didn't turn to drugs. You've paid me back". I respect yours as well as all others in their decisions. I would respect you no less. I haven't met Sen Obama either but, I can feel just through my television that he's a gentle soul and someone that I would hope my son's to be like. My son was involved with gang activity but, turned his friends onto what was going on and now they all sit around and talk about Obama. Sen Obama with his grassroots theory is much more powerful than people realize. He's making communities come together and helping out. Not all but, quite a few. I could only imagine what he's like in person. Bless you.

This is a great article. Once in a while we do meet people who are decent who JUST happen to be politicians as well.

Good for you Bill Richardson. You could have done this some other time, but you chose to do it at a time when it could cost you personally. That's what I call bridge-building. THANKS!!!!!!
